Mostly all sports car manufactures try to pack their vehicles with powerful engines, without worrying too much about the emissions. Lotus is trying to change the opinion in the upcoming variant of the Elise, which will now feature a new engine that emits 13 percent less CO2.

The 2011 Elise will feature a brand new 1.6-liter Valvematic engine that meets Euro 5 regulations. The engine is 200cc smaller than the one used today, but still produces 134hp at 6800 RPM that propels the vehicle to 60mph in six seconds flat, while emitting 155g of CO2 per kilometer.

The upgraded R and SC models will offer better performance with a 0-60mph time of 5.1 and 4.3 seconds respectively. These two variants will emit 200g of CO2 per kilometer. The 2011 Lotus Elise will debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show.
