Sometimes I like to come up with a theme for the theme review article. It’s neat to find three themes that have something in common and then write about them. Other times I like to just wing it. I come across more than a dozen themes every week, and this feature runs every two weeks, so I have plenty from which to choose. This week is the latter. I have tons of theme in my queue, and decided to just pick three of them. I only hope that the ones that didn’t make the cut will still be atop the queue next time around. They’re good ones, too.
FAON
Every so often, sometimes once a week, I get an email from Hedone Design announcing a new theme. I usually click right over to see their latest offering. They’re clearly among my favorite theme developers, and each of their themes seems to offer something different than the last. Their latest theme FAON, is a visually pleasing theme that employs a neat design on the home page.
The phone’s blue and black color scheme is certainly pleasing to the eye, or at least these eyes. The four main aspects of the BlackBerry — messages, phone, calendar, browser — each occupy one screen quadrant. In the center sits a ticker of sorts. On the outside are the battery and signal meters, one on each side. On the inside are six user-customizable icons, which you can scroll through. There is also a small section in the bottom right for a Today preview.
If you’re a fan of Hedone’s themes, you can get the FAON theme for $6.99. It runs on OS 4.6 and above, for both touch and non-touch devices.
TrueLoVe
Sometimes the simplest themes are the most pleasing. The TrueLoVe theme is certainly one of those. It’s basic, employing the typical aspects of the new theme designs, but it implements them so well, and in such a balanced manner, that I thought it ripe for a review on TRW. Even better, it comes in two colors, just in case you want a bit more customization.
The home screen features a varying number of icons. For non-touch devices you can choose the six-icon or the eight-icon layout. On the Storm models you can have 10 icons on the main screen. These look like leather patchwork, an endearing little feature. Calendar and messages pop up a Today preview, and there’s a little clock icon on the right side. You can get the them in red or pink, depending on your tastes.
If simple, cute themes are your thing, you can get the TrueLoVe theme for $5.99. It runs on all BlackBerry models OS 4.6 and above, with the six- or eight-icon style, as well as red and pink.
Pod
I remember first finding Calx Design and wondering why I hadn’t found them earlier. They’re a theme development marvel, and should probably be featured in this space more frequently. The Pod theme is interesting. It doesn’t feature a ton of icons on the home screen, nor does it include a Today preview, so typically it wouldn’t be up my alley. Yet I enjoy this one greatly.
The most noticeable aspect of the theme is the speaker-looking graphic in the screen’s center. It acts as the signal and battery meter, with the signal, broken down into five bars, running around the left side and battery meter, broken into 10 bars, running around the right. The home screen is also 3D rendered for a more visually stunning look. The icons are also sharp, perhaps the best icons I’ve seen on any theme. And considering the number of themes I run across, that’s saying a lot.
If you’re as pleased as I am with the visuals, you can get the Pod theme for $4.99. Like our other themes this week it runs on BlackBerry OS 4.6 and above, but unlike the other themes there is no Storm version.
