Mobile security has become an increasing concern over the last few years. Our smartphones have essentially become mini computers, and as such are susceptible to many of the same pitfalls. BlackBerry provides a secure platform for wireless transfers, but there is always the chance of catching a virus. Users who frequently download files from the internet are at a greater risk. A few options exist for BlackBerry users who want to protect themselves against mobile phone viruses. Lookout has developed similar software for other platforms, and they have now released a BlackBerry application. While security is its primary aim, the application contains a couple of other features you might find useful.
The anti-virus not only scans the files on your BlackBerry to ensure that it is not infected, but also scans all files you download. This is key, since most viruses come from files you download onto your device. It runs in the background, too, so it will stay hidden while keeping your device safe from malicious viruses.
Lookout also includes a backup and mobile syncing feature. You can schedule regular backups, so you can let your device take care of its own backups. You can then access your data from a regular web browser, easily restoring it to a wiped device, or even to a new device.
The missing device feature is rather neat as well. You can not only locate your device by logging into your dashboard, but you can sound an alarm on the device, even if it’s on silent mode. This is perfect if you’ve misplaced your BlackBerry around the house. I know I’m no the only one who’s done that. Finally, if you feel that you will not recover your device, or want to stay safe, you can remotely wipe it. Then, if you do recover it, you can restore your wireless backup.
Lookout is a free download. You can download it at https://www.mylookout.com/registration.
