Ever since I got a BlackBerry I’ve been looking for guitar-related applications. I have both a metronome and tuner, but it seems like those two functions would transfer well to the BlackBerry. A few months ago LCA Mobile released a preliminary version of Guitar Studio, and after giving it a look I became a fan. It didn’t do everything I wanted, but it is certainly a useful tool for guitarists who rock a BlackBerry. They’ve now released a full version, which is available in our store. If you’re a guitarist who spends a lot of time on the road, this might be the application for you.
The application supports both tablature files (in text format) and Chordpro files, so you can bring your music on the go. It supports auto scrolling, allowing you to play along without moving your hands from the guitar. It takes a while to get the hang of auto scrolling — different songs require different paces, of course — but once you get it down there’s nothing better. If you have MP3 files on your BlackBerry you can play them while you auto-scroll through a tab or Chordpro file for the consummate rocking experience.
Of course, being a guitar snob I do have a few complaints about the application. For starters, there’s no metronome. It’s not exactly a complex feature, and I have no idea why it’s not included. Also, the BlackBerry could have the capacity to become a true guitar tuner. Guitar Studio plays a tone, to which you can tune your guitar, and that’s a nice start. But by using the device’s microphone a developer could create an input tuner. That, however, seems very complex and I understand why it’s not included.
Still, the application is a big help to guitarists. You can get Guitar Studio for $9.99.
