Over the summer I got a chance to check out Tumbplay’s music store. At the time it was the only one available at BlackBerry App World, but it has since faced competition, mainly, I think, from 7digital. But Thumbplay wasn’t about to lay down and let 7digital steal the day. No, they knew they had to introduce something new, and at CES we heard the announcement. Their new unlimited music app is now in private beta, and should be ready for an official release soon. Any time you put the words unlimited and music next to each other, I’m all ears. So let’s check out what the app has to offer.
Like other unlimited music services, Thumbplay’s plan does not include ownership of the files. Instead they’re yours as long as you continue to pay the subscription fee. Some people, understandably, do not prefer this type of service. Ownership is important to many people, and the thought of having a track one day and not the next isn’t an easy one to stomach. But subscription music services do have their benefits.
At $9.99 per month, the cost of a Thumbplay subscription is about that of an album. The question people should ask themselves is whether they’d rather buy and own one album per month, or instead have access to a library of over a million songs, with the ability to download and play music on demand. Both have their advantages.
Thumbplay advertises the following features of its service:
- Unlimited, on-demand access to any artist or album; includes millions of high-quality songs
- Search – Find music by artist, song, album or genre; includes free previews of all songs
- Favorites – a quick, intuitive way to build a personal music collection that automatically synchronizes between smartphones and the desktop app
- Online and offline smartphone access, listen to music without Wi-Fi® or network connection. Whether underground or mid-flight, playlists are available for listening offline — delivering true portability on BlackBerry smartphones
- Effortless playlist creation; add songs or albums to playlists which automatically, wirelessly synchronize across PC, Mac and smartphone devices
- AutoPlaylist — Instantly generate expert recommendations based on favorite songs; a great way to discover new music
- iTunes® playlist re-creation within Thumbplay Music’s desktop app. With a few clicks, recreate iTunes playlists and have them available on your PC and BlackBerry Smartphone.
You also have the option to purchase tracks while on the unlimited subscription plan.
Make sure, too, to check out their demo video:
Again, the subscription costs $9.99 per month. If you’d like to try out the private beta, you can apply at http://music.thumbplay.com/.
