After reviewing the additions to SuperQWERTY yesterday, I was delighted to find out about a somewhat similar application yesterday. With a thanks to Mauricio at BlackBerry Rocks for the pointer, the application is called Iconify, and if you like guessing the nature of an application by its name you might be able to guess what this one does. It essentially creates an icon for typically non-icon BlackBerry features. These include web pages, calls, text messages, PIN, email, and more. And, since it’s free, it acts as a nice complement to SuperQWERTY.
Once you install the application, you can select contacts from your address book and create icons for calls, messages, or emails. You can create a custom image for each, or you can use the image already assigned to that contact. You can choose whether to have all of their numbers pop up when you “run the app,” or you can have it use one number automatically. With web pages, Iconify will try to read the favicon of the site, which will set an image for you. Otherwise you can choose a picture of your own.
One feature I like, and am glad they included in this beta release, is that when you change the information in your address book, the icon automatically updates as well. So if you set Cathy’s number to always call her home phone, and then change her phone phone number, the icon will call the new number. So it essentially pulls the information from your address book every time it executes. Sounds good to me.
The application works with BlackBerry models running OS 4.3 and higher. You can check out the developer specs here, or you can download it here.
