Two Pierce College Fort Steilacoom students will be honored as members of the 2010 All-Washington Academic Team at noon March 25 at South Puget Sound Community College. The ceremony recognizes top scholars from community and technical colleges from all over the state with scholarship prizes.

This year, the team members representing Pierce College Fort Steilacoom are Shepherd Engle and Bethany Foster.

Shepherd Engle

As one of 10 children in his family, Shepherd Engle, 24, of Puyallup, initially chose community college for its affordability. He soon became involved on campus and has spent two years helping other students as a math tutor, and last year began serving as a teaching assistant for a calculus course. In his off time, he is active in his church and enjoys helping others. He is currently studying math and physics and working towards an university transfer degree. He plans to become a medical doctor.

Bethany Foster

Bethany Foster, 29, of University Place, knew she had to be a good role model for her daughter and doing so meant getting a good education for herself. Since starting at Pierce, Bethany has served extensively in student government and as a leader in the campus’ Multicultural Leadership Institute. She is now working towards an university transfer degree, studying psychology. She ultimately wants to become a marriage and family counselor.

Both Shepherd and Bethany will receive $750 scholarships from Key Bank and the National Education Loan Association, and they are now nominated for the 2010 All-USA Academic Team. Officials from Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students of two-year colleges, will select students for the All-USA team.
