Eco Factor: Sustainable development to harvest solar energy.

Preston Scott Cohen has won the competition to develop the Taiyuan Museum of Art. The building, which is already under construction, features tessellated surfaces that allow the maximum penetration of daylight and natural ventilation in addition to producing some spatial conditions as the user circulates through and around the building.

The building is designed to produce a unified sequence of spaces while at the same time giving visitors the freedom to follow a path defined by the architecture or to skip from one gallery to another in a non-linear fashion. Apart from letting in natural light and ventilation to reduce energy demands, the architecture also harvests solar energy for which the design team will make use of photovoltaic panels embedded in glass.
