Dear Viewers,
2010 has brought many exciting opportunities for The Cancer Project. So many people across the country are requesting our resources and spreading the word about cancer prevention and survival through good nutrition. With all the happenings, we want to make sure that we keep you informed.
Starting this month, The Cancer Project will replace its quarterly newsletter with monthly e-news alerts to ensure that you receive the latest information on diet and cancer, and have more opportunities to join in this important mission. Your energy and support is what fuels our organization to be able to make good nutrition a reality in the lives that need it the most – for children, for underserved communities, for those afflicted with diseases like cancer, and of course, for ourselves and our loved ones.
I hope that our news will inspire you to think of your health goals, and then perhaps how you can resolve to make a difference in your community and your life this year.
Cheers to a long and healthy life,

Lauray MacElhern

Cruisin’ for a Cure
Every year, Carl Cuda organizes a popular Car Cruise in Bethel, Pa., to raise money for a nonprofit. After attending a Cancer Project Food for Life class, Cuda&mdash a cancer survivor&mdash decided all proceeds from this year’s event should support The Cancer Project. More than 1,000 people attended the September Car Cruise and donated approximately $4,000 to help The Cancer Project promote cancer prevention and survival. Cancer Survivor Sues over Grilled Chicken Carcinogen
Fast-food companies market grilled chicken as a healthful option, but most consumers have no idea that the products harbor a dangerous carcinogen. Two Connecticut residents have teamed up with The Cancer Project to file a class-action lawsuit demanding that Burger King, Friendly’s, and McDonald’s warn customers that their grilled chicken products contain PhIP, a chemical that increases cancer risk even in small amounts. Diet and Cancer in the News
Soy Protects Against Lung Cancer
Soy consumption may help fight lung cancer, according to a new study. Researchers in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study looked at 76,661 participants’ lifestyle factors and lung cancer risk and found that those who consumed the most soy had the lowest risk of lung cancer. Among men who never smoked, researchers saw a significantly lower risk of lung cancer in those who consumed the most soy, compared with those who consumed the least. Researchers saw similar results in nonsmoking women, but they could not rule out statistical chance as the reason for these results. People who consumed the most soy may have also participated in other activities that could lower risk such as eating more fruits and vegetables. Soy foods in this study included miso soup, soymilk, a variety of tofu dishes, and fermented soybeans.
