It seems like more and more businesses are offering free WiFi access as a draw for customers. Starbucks has been offering free WiFi for Starbucks card users since 2008, and McDonalds just freed the WiFi in their locations nationwide. Sometimes, though, you just don’t want to sit in a McDonalds or Starbucks — I know plenty of people who won’t go to either place on principle. There are alternatives, for sure, but it can be tough to find one unless you happen to walk by. If you ever thought someone should create a directory of free WiFi locations, well, you’re in luck. There are a few new applications in our store that seek out locations near you that will let you use their wireless Internet for free.
The application, appropriately named Free WiFi Cafe Spots, allows you to use your GPS location to find hotspots near you. If you can’t get a GPS signal, or your provider blocks third parties from accessing your GPS unit, you can manually enter your current location and find cafes that offer free WiFi near you. The application information resides on your BlackBerry, so you can track down a free WiFi location even if you don’t have signal.
As with many new applications, there appear to be some bugs in this one. There is an option to add a hotspot to the list — perfect, really, because that makes the application much better — but a few users have reported complications with the process. Others have said that it’s not easy to enter in a location. Why are we featuring it now, then? Because the app is on sale now through April 14, 50 percent off. So if there was ever a time to get in on the ground floor, it’s now.
You can get Free WiFi Cafe Spots for $1.99, though in two weeks it will go back up to $3.99. You can also get a New York, Paris, or London version if you live in or frequent one of those cities. Those are normally $2.99 each, but are on sale for 99 cents between now and April 14.
