Eco Factor: Sustainable streetlights powered by solar energy.

The amount of electricity that is consumed by streetlights installed to keep highways safe after dark is staggering. To reduce burden on the grid, industrial designers have often thought of potential systems that make use of renewable solar energy. Moreover, since streetlights are installed in the open, they can easily harvest solar energy for nighttime illumination.

Industrial designer Natalia Romanova has come up with concept self-sustainable streetlight that captures renewable solar energy during the day to charge onboard batteries. The streetlight is to be made from metal with a concrete base. The flexible solar modules generate electricity for two LED-panels. The designer believes that the lamps will generate more energy than needed, with all surplus energy being stored to recharge EVs.
