Back in the day, when I used to drive a car, I used to be obsessed with fuel economy. When I started driving gas was 99 cents a gallon. Not long after it was up around $2, and now it can get over $3 per gallon. There’s nothing I can do to lower fuel prices, but I can do everything in my power to make sure my car uses fuel efficiently. This usually means entering data into a spreadsheet, but by the time I get to my computer I often forget to do it. In this case, a BlackBerry app makes sense. Thankfully, developer LSphone has created a low-cost application that lets you track many aspects of your fuel consumption.
The idea behind TREC is that you enter the size of your gas tank, and then let the program take over. You can then enter how many gallons of gas you added, the total cost, and the distance traveled since your last refuel. The program then does simple calculations to tell you how economical your consumption has been. Yes, you can probably do this on your own, but the convenience of having an app — a cheap one at that — gives TREC an advantage.
The only thing the app doesn’t do, and which it really does need to do eventually to be a viable solution for everyone, is to track data over multiple uses. Right now it stores the information from the last use, but not further back than that. The easy solution is to set up a memo pad document and copy and paste the information. That should create an easy referral point.
If you see your fuel economy dropping, you can take any number of steps to improve it. WikiHow has a long list. I always check the PSI on the tires and the air filter first, unless my driving habits have changed. Without an app like this, it’s easy for a drop in fuel economy to go unnoticed. By using it, you make sure that you address the problem as soon as it crops up, so you can continue enjoying the best possible fuel rate.
As with many of the apps we feature, this one is on sale. You can get TREC for just 99 cents until May 31, just in time for the summer travel season. Even if you happen to miss the sale, it’s only $1.20 anyway.
