Three easy tips: delete messages, app switcher, app grid

Oftentimes I browse BlackBerry related sites looking for good quick tip ideas. It seems like there are an almost infinite number of functions you can perform with your BlackBerry, and the more we present the better off our users will be. Sometimes, though, I come across tips that don’t quite merit their own posts. I’m going to start combining these into easy tip packages. Today’s three-pack will include deleting old messages to free up memory, easily switching applications, and how to change your application menu grid style.

Delete prior messages

Everyone wants to find a way to clear the most possible memory on their BlackBerry devices. More memory means a cleaner running device. One way to do this is to delete old emails. If you have a proper backup of messages on your computer, you can accomplish this easily. Just pick a date and you can delete all messages from there on back.

In your messages screen scroll to the date. Then hit the menu button and select “Delete Prior.” That will wipe all messages from the selected date back to the first message on your device. I can see why many people wouldn’t want to do this — it’s handy to have old messages that you can find via search. But if you’re looking to create more free memory, this is one quick and easy way to accomplish that.

Application switcher

If you want to switch among open BlackBerry applications, press and hold the Menu button. Simple enough, right? You will see all open BlackBerry applications here, so you can also opt to close unused applications to help your device run faster and use less battery.

Change application grid

I’m not sure why anyone would want to do this, but just in case…

If you want to change the grid size of your applications menu, you can do that by going to Options – Advanced – Accessibility. There you can select from a few grid sizes. Default is based on theme, and is usually six applications long. You can select 4×4, 2×2, and 1×1. Again, I’m not sure why. Maybe you like larger icons.
