Following an investigation by this blog (and with the story also told in The Sunday Times), another major “mistake” in the IPCC’s benchmark Fourth Assessment Report has emerged.

Similar in effect to the erroneous “2035” claim – the year the IPCC claimed that Himalayan glaciers were going to melt – in this instance we find that the IPCC has wrongly claimed that in some African countries, yields from rain-fed agriculture could be reduced by up to 50 percent by 2020.

At best, this is a wild exaggeration, unsupported by any scientific research, referenced only to a report produced by a Canadian advocacy group, written by an obscure Moroccan academic who specialises in carbon trading, citing references which do not support his claims.

Unlike the glacier claim, which was confined to a section of the technical Working Group II report, this “50 percent by 2020” claim forms part of the key Synthesis Report, the production of which was the personal responsibility of the chair of the IPCC, Dr R K Pachauri. It has been repeated by him in many public fora. He, therefore, bears a personal responsibility for the error.

El Smart ForTwo ha vuelto a revalidad su título de vehículo a nivel mundial con menos emisiones de CO2, en concreto, sólo 86 gramos por cada kilómetro recorrido. Con este nuevo galardón, refuerza aun más si cabe, su posición de lider en el sector de vehículos ecológicos.

Smart ha podido llegar a dichas cifras tras un intenso trabajo de desarrollo de sus ingenieros reduciendo la resistencia aerodinámica.  El Director General de Smart, Marc Langenbrick ha querido dejar unas palabras tras recibir este premio:

Como todos sabemos, hace unos días la escudería Virgin Racing presentó su monoplaza VR-01 en el circuito de Silverstone. Pues bien, hoy ha sido publicado un vídeo de dicho evento en el que podemos escuchar el rugido del motor Cosworth del VR-01.

Solo nos queda esperar para poder ver en acción a Virgin Racing en unos tests oficiales junto al resto de escuderías que aunque no sean decisivos, podremos hacernos una idea de lo que puede llegar a conseguir este equipo en la Fórmula 1.

Manic depression or Bipolar depression is actually considered as one of the worst type of depression that people usually suffer from.
Characterized by sudden and extreme changes in their mood, Manic depression is said to be called as such because manic = mania refers to the ‘ups’ while depression refers to the ‘downs’.
A lot of people actually experience erratic changes in their moods, some times, these so-called mood swings may not just be caused by PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) or stress. Doctors actually have diagnosed mood swings as a common symptom of depression.

Ford sigue trabajando duramente para conseguir un pedazo del mercado emergente indio de automóviles y prueba de ello es que acaban de confirmar la introducción del Ford Figo (la versión India del Ford Fiesta).

Hace escasas horas que se ha iniciado la fabricación de este modelo en la ciudad de Chennai y los planes de la marca son la de fabricar 200.000 unidades anuales. Por el momento este vehículo sólo estará disponible en la India aunque no se descarta exportarlo al resto del mundo en un futuro.

El Ford Figo está disponible con dos motores, un gasolina de 1.2 litros y un diésel 1.4 TDCi que desarrolla 68CV. Sólo estará disponible con cambio manual (por el momento). El equipamiento de serie esta compuesto por ABS, doble airbag, aire acondicionado, llantas y paquete eléctrico.

The Meteorological Office is blocking public scrutiny of the central role played by its top climate scientist in a highly controversial report by the beleaguered United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Professor John Mitchell, the Met Office’s Director of Climate Science, shared responsibility for the most worrying headline in the 2007 Nobel Prize-winning IPCC report – that the Earth is now hotter than at any time in the past 1,300 years.

And he approved the inclusion in the report of the famous ‘hockey stick’ graph, showing centuries of level or declining temperatures until a steep 20th Century rise.

ExxonMobil cash supported concerted campaign to undermine case for man-made warming

Free-market, anti-climate change think-tanks such as the Atlas Economic Research Foundation in the US and the International Policy Network in the UK have received grants totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds from the multinational energy company ExxonMobil. Both organisations have funded international seminars pulling together climate change deniers from across the globe.

U.S. unemployment is dismal right now, but slicing it by educational attainment makes a compelling case for anyone to increase their level of education. As shown below, Americans with bachelor's degrees and higher have just a 4% unemployment rate. There isn't an unemployment disaster for this demographic.

Yes, we know that the university educational system isn't perfect. A lot of people probably learn somewhat useless skills and college degrees are expensive to attain. Yet give us 100 people with degrees vs. 100 without degrees and the first 100 will tend to have more people with marketable knowledge and skills than the second 100, even if a few of the college educated wasted their time and money. You'll never know exactly what skills lead to the best jobs, but collecting different kinds of knowledge, in large amounts, has a high probability of eventually paying off financially. Better yet, if you study seriously, it also has a guaranteed intellectual payoff.

Thus for all the sophistry about education being a waste of money or broken, you can't ignore suspecting that there's a reason why successful people around the world, for hundreds of years, have tended to spend great amounts of time and money educating their children.

As Europe sinks deeper into its sovereign debt morass, America should be partly happy. That's because, on a relative basis, Europe is making the U.S. economy look better in the eyes of bond investors.

At a time when many have questioned investors' willingness to continue gobbling up American bonds, it thus should be comforting for the U.S. that a major alternative to U.S. bonds, Euro bonds, isn't looking as attractive as it used to. Japanese bonds aren't looking so hot either given Japan's economic challenges as well.

Thus European travails have ensured increased demand for U.S. bonds going forward, and an increased ability for the U.S. to weather through its current period of deficit spending and economic weakness. Sometimes victory is had by the player who simply commits the least errors. It economics this rings especially true given that almost every nation seems to blunder along whatever path political winds blow.

Am I gobbling up U.S. debt? No. But for investors who need to park massive amounts of capital in 'low-risk' fixed-income, ie. the investors that matter here, the above applies.

Starting with the Syria Accountability Act (SAA) of 2004, the U.S. has implemented a series of trade and financial sanctions on Syria. The sanctions are affecting the daily lives of Syrian citizens in several areas including: travel restrictions and a ban on software and IT export, as well as business limitations.

Also, the sanctions have hit hard the national carrier, Syrian Air. With a ban on buying new commercial jets or even spare parts for the existing fleet, the number of operational planes shrunk to three airplanes only.

Realizing the paralyzing blow to the Syrian air travel industry,  a group of Syrian youth started a campaign in support of Syrian Air. They have launched a website and a Facebook group, and have gathered over a thousand supporters in less than a month. The campaign's website states:

We are calling all who are in charge to release the sanctions on Syrian Air, Syrian Air have the right to buy spare parts and aircrafts..

And the campaigners point out that the sanctions endanger civilian passengers on board those planes:

Syrian Air transport civilian from different nationalities.. safety is number one in air transportation… Stop the Sanctions NOW!

Syrian blogger Fadi Halisso writes [ar] about the campaign on his blog خربشات (Kharbashat: scribbles):
