  • Downstate cops post ‘drug house’ signs

BELLEVILLE — The Belleville Police Department has a new tactic in fighting the drug trade in the city — signs pointing out to the public houses and apartments where police say drugs are sold.

A sign placed outside an apartment building earlier in the week said in bold, red letters: “Warning! Drug House; Enter at your own risk.”

An arrow on the sign points to the building, and the address is attached to the bottom of the sign.

Police made an arrest for drug sales there on Jan. 7. The owner of the apartment building couldn’t be reached this week.

The goal of the signs, Belleville Police Capt. Don Sax said, is community awareness — letting the neighborhood know the police are paying attention to their complaints and acting on the problem.

“Drugs beget violence,” Sax said. “It’s just another tool in that fight to try to fight off the drug trade.”

Michael Hassard Sr. lives near the group of apartment buildings that includes the one marked with the sign. He said he has seen countless cars come and go quickly at night.

“I think it’s a good thing,” he said about the sign. “It can’t hurt.”

A lifelong resident of the neighborhood, 32-year-old Heath Wentz Sr., said the area has seen good and bad times, and that in the past four years, it’s taken a turn for the worse because of the apartments.

He said he’s seen it all there — ambulances responding to overdoses, fights, multiple drug deals happening each night, and some gun violence.

Last summer, he found a bag of hypodermic needles thrown into his flower bed.

He’s been reporting problems for years, but he said the drug trade persists there.

But Wentz is skeptical about whether the sign will help stop drug deals. He said people buying drugs come for them mostly after the sun goes down, and after police take the sign down.

“It’s not going to discourage some people,” he said. “It just makes the neighborhood look bad.”

Police also will begin sending notifications about drug busts to the managers and owners of the property where police say drugs are sold, and to the neighbors.

The department also has set up a tip line where citizens can provide information about the houses or apartments where the drug signs have been posted, or those that police haven’t picked up on.

That number is 234-1218, Ext. 686, and callers can remain anonymous.

The letters police will mail to property owners and neighbors include tips of what to watch out for, such as numerous short visits to the location, people who appear to be acting as lookouts, unusual security measures, and cars driving by slowly.

The police department used the sign for the first time Wednesday and won’t necessarily use them for every residential drug bust.

“If we feel like it’s not going to be of value at a particular location, it may not go there,” Sax said.

The police have only two signs, and when they use them at a location, it’ll likely only be for a day, and only during daytime hours.

However, the sign will be up again on West H Street today because police used it for only part of Wednesday. The signs are heavily weighted, which police expect will deter people from stealing them.

When asked whether he thinks the signs will advertise where people can buy drugs, Sax said that those buying the drugs probably already knew to get them there in the first place.

Ward 7 Alderman Jack LeChien likes the new strategy.

“It’s a way of putting pressure on the landlords to run a tighter ship,” he said.

In response to anyone who might complain about the signs’ role in decreasing property values or in difficulty selling homes, LeChien said, “In the long term, what’s going to help sell their house is getting drug dealers out of their neighborhood.”

  • Social Experiment? Digg community to interview Toyota President on Monday

Digg, the “what’s popular” website that allows users to share and rate links to stories they’ve discovered online, also offers a feature known as “Digg Dialogg,” wherein it hosts a streaming exchange between prominent public figures and the masses (those that frequent Digg, at least).

Monday’s Digg Dialogg will be with Toyota’s U.S. President & COO, Jim Lentz, who will presumably answer questions about that hot new 2011 Sienna. He might field a few queries on the recall woes afflicting the company right now as well. We’re just guessing.

The description of the event gives us some indication of what will be covered and why Toyota is reaching out in this unique manner:

“Toyota is one of the most admired and recognizable brands in the world. With this recall, Toyota is facing intense scrutiny around how they will manage and get past the crisis. With social media channels such as Digg emerging as primary sources for news and engagement, Toyota is taking the unprecedented step of putting its senior executive in a direct dialogue with consumers, using social media to address Toyota’s response to this extraordinary challenge.”

The interview starts at 2 p.m. PST Monday, February 8 and will be broadcast live on Digg’s Dialogg page. They’ve already started accepting questions, which you can post up until 8 a.m. PST Monday. As of this writing, there were exactly 900 comments already in the queue. As you can probably imagine, most of the questions have an irate tone, but some people are asking the mundane, the humorous and the absurd as well. What did you expect from those sociial mediates?

  • ICEing Safari LX

    Dear All,

I have just booked a Safari LX (my 3rd one actually!) and would like suggestions on a good ICE setup. My previous Safari (also LX, which was stolen) had a Pioneer HU, Pioneer 10" SW, Sony speakers (can’t remember the exact model) with an amplifier (probably a local make) and the sound was quite bad, probably due the amp not being a good one.

A Pioneer 4190 HU and a pair of six year old Sony speakers are lying at home which could be used but am not sure if the sony speakers are worth using.

The type of music that I listen to is metal and hard rock when my wife’s not in the car else FM!

Would like to have guidance on amp, speakers and SW, basically the entire ICE setup! My ideal budget is 20k but I could stretch a bit.

    Thanks,
    Ankit

Yesterday we learned about the refreshed 2011 BMW X5 which goes on sale right after the New York Auto Show in April. Shortly after yesterday’s announcement, BMW dropped over 150 new photos of the X5 on us, along with some video footage of one on the new models running around in the snow in Arjeplog in northern Sweden.

When the updated X5s arrive, the vehicles won’t be any lighter, but the base window stickers will. The xDrive35i carries a base price of $46,675 including destination charges. That’s almost $1,800 less than a 2010 xDrive30i. We’re not sure if the equipment level has changed to achieve that lower price point, but any time you get a price drop it can’t hurt. On the other hand, no good deed goes unpunished as the $59,275 twin-turbo V8 powered xDrive50i will cost you about $2,100 more than the starting point for the outgoing xDrive48i model.

Check out the video after the jump along with all the new pics in the gallery.

    gut muscles

Want to score extreme business success? Then you must recognize the difference between KNOWLEDGE and WISDOM .

A KNOWLEDGABLE PERSON gathers, memorizes, crunches, and reports information. In other words, A KNOWLEDGABLE PERSON values book smarts – not gut smarts or street smarts.

A WISE PERSON not only gathers information, but goes a step beyond, by merging knowledge with gut instincts, and thereby thinking from both sides of their brain!

HONING YOUR GUT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER IN BUSINESS FOR MANY REASONS…INCLUDING:

    1. The world has speeded up. Learning how to better trust your gut helps you make wiser, quicker decisions.

    2. The world has gotten more cluttered. Leaning to trust your gut helps you to wisely narrow focus on the most relevant facts.

    3. The world now relies too much on focus groups. Leaning to trust your gut helps you make sure these sessions don’t turn into de-focus groups.

SOME QUICK GUT MUSCLE BUILDNG TECHNIQUES TO TRY THIS AFTERNOON:

    1. FEEL WHAT YOU FEEL BY FEELING SOMETHING:

Psychologists believe that the sense of touch develops before both our sense of sight and our intellect, and so it’s a highly developed sense that can offer major clues about what we need to know. YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Find an object related to your business decision. Hold it in your hands. Then ask yourself directly what you want to know and allow thoughts to wander.

    2. LISTEN TO WHAT AN EXPERT HAS TO SAY: YOU.

Psychologists believe when you talk out loud you give your reflective mind less time to interfere with your overly-thinking mind. YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Find a place you can sit alone. Purposefully speak your thoughts out loud about your business project. Ask yourself rapidfire questions. Give yourself rapidfire answers.

    3. TRY THE IDEA ON FOR SIZE:

If you’re struggling with a situation — try on different solutions. And I mean literally try the solutions on. YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Relax. Think about your first solution. Now imagine it as a jacket. Try it on. How does jacket number one fit? Next imagine solution number two as jacket number two. Try it on. How does this one feel? Try on as many jackets as you need to – but don’t spend more than thirty seconds trying on each jacket.

  • Suggest a paint booth in Central Travancore Kerala

It is that that time again. Our 1967 FIAT 1100R must go for paint job before the rains.

We would like to scrape the old paint completely (probably sand blasting?) to find all rust spots and correct those. Please note it is not a rust bucket..but there are bubbles here & there..and also has several coats of old paints since 67.

Then planning to get a nice factory finish paint job on it.

We are looking for a paint booth with heated curing in a 50km radius of Mavelikkara (in Alleppey). So anything between Kottayam and Kollam would be ideal.

We want to get this baby back in its glory again.

So looking for some suggestions from the Gurus here on this forum.

The concept shows a transparent touch-screen based phone, supposedly Windows Mobile, that makes great use of the display surface.

Who knows, with Samsung pushing transparent OLED, this may be come reality sooner rather than later.  Now they just need somewhere to hide the battery…

  • Report: Saab 9-3X now available for order at U.S. dealers

2010 Saab 9-3X – Click above for high-res image gallery

The good news for Saab loyalists is that dealerships have been told they may start placing orders for the Saab 9-3X. The bad news for Saab loyalists is that if the deal with Spyker falls through, that brand-new Saab you are dreaming about will never arrive in your driveway. In a nutshell, dealers are allowed to take orders for the cars, but there’s no pricing information and nothing will be officially submitted until the Saab/Spyker deal closes (as of now, this is scheduled for February 15).

The announcement isn’t completely unexpected. After all, we reported just a few days ago that Spyker had big plans for the Saab lineup, including full range of 9-3 models for 2012. These will follow on the heels of the new 9-5, and the 9-4X, due in the U.S. market during 2010 and 2011, respectively. Whatever the case, if you believe in Saab, now’s the time to scoot down to your local dealer, open your checkbook and place an order!

  • The Ridiculous Bets You Can Make On Tonight’s Super Bowl

reggie bush kim kardashianHow are you supposed to get excited about tonight’s big game if your team didn’t make it?

Well, you could become a Johnny-Come-Lately member of “Who Dat” Nation.

Or you can put some money on the game and actually have a stake in the outcome.

But just betting on the winner/loser is kinda boring.

Fortunately, there are way more exotic bets you can place, and many don’t require you to have any knowledge whatsoever.

Canadian sports-betting site Bodog lets you place wagers on all kinds of things, such as the number of times Kim Kardashian appears on TV, or whether a member of The Who smashes a guitar during the halftime show.

Witt the help of VegasWatch, we’ve rounded up some of the most interesting “prop” bets you can still make on tonight’s game, in order to actually keep yourself entertained.

    Check out the bets >

(A note on odds: There are two kinds of odds listed. The first is simple. When the odds are listed as 4/1 it means you’ll get paid 4x on your bet. Elsewhere, what’s listed is the so-called “moneyline”.When you see, for example a bet that says (+130) it means you will win $130 for a $100 bet. When you see (-130) it means you must bet $130 to win $100)

  • H1N1, Obama’s Pandemic That Wasn’t – ‘Nuther Snow Job.

02.07.10 06:00 AM posted by Skip MacLure

How far would Barack Obama and his administration go in order to gin up support/panic for his signature health care legislation? If you’ll remember, the grandstanding and informational blitz for the ‘UPCOMING’ H1N1 started back around January and February of last year. The Democrats were shouting from the roof tops that “THE PANDEMIC IS COMING, THE PANDEMIC IS COMING”. We HAD to have health care passed right now! Sounded an awful lot like the bleating that was going on with the ’stimulus’ didn’t it? We absolutely, positively had to have it or the banks would collapse. Wall Street would fold up and go home and the economy would collapse.

As such things usually do in the light of sober reflection, it is apparent that we would have been SO much better off had we simply allowed the banks, the investment houses and the auto manufacturers to fail and go into bankruptcy, which is precisely why the bankruptcy laws had been written into the Constitution in the first place. The market place would have adjusted, reorganizations and bankruptcy courts would have adjudicated and the void would have been filled, because nature abhors a vacuum.

As it was, we allowed the ‘leaders’ who had us dead in their sights, with SAP written all over us, to panic the country into the MASSIVE PORK FEED that is the stimulus and every single ancillary piece of paper that has come out of Washington remotely associated with it. Keep in mind that many of these so called leaders are the very ones who knowingly fostered and promoted the very factors that created the situation to start with. read more »

Our least favourite video reviewer has published this video comparing the HTC HD2 vs the Google Nexus One. While getting the screen size wrong and complaining about the Windows Mobile settings when Sense settings completely replaces it does not do much for his credibility, the video may be useful to some who are comparing the device on style and screen size, both areas where the HTC HD2 indisputably rules.

  • Sunday Music – White Flag

Today’s music video is ‘White Flag’ from Dido.

This video was posted to You Tube by isntitironicTOTP

Dido Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O’Malley Armstrong goes by the name Dido thankfully, or maybe she would never have had a record played on radio. She is an English singer who had a white hot period in the early years of the 21st Century. She shot to Worldwide stardom in 1999 with her first album, but this is without doubt her biggest hit from her second album ‘Life For Rent’, released in 2003.

Her career has been bigger outside the U.S. where she has only had moderate success. In all, she has however sold nearly 30 million albums, and has had a huge career in The UK, her Country of origin.

Blessed with a beautiful tone to her voice, it’s easy to see just why she has been so popular. She has not been prolific, only having released three albums in all over the 11 years she has been singing. However those albums have all been certified Platinum many times over, so when you do have a career like that, you can be selective about how often you do bring out new music. She has won numerous awards in her home Country and has been nominated twice for Grammy Awards, including one for this single.

The name Dido itself  has some history, as originally it was not part of her name. Her parents gave her the impressive sounding name minus the Dido part, and then, virtually from birth, they gave her the ‘nickname’ of Dido, which was the name of the Legendary Queen of Carthage, and was also a cause of her being bullied at school for having such an unusual name. She has since legally adopted that name as part of her full name.

So, in effect, she has something other than a beautiful voice in common with Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien, who used the better known name of Dusty Springfield.

  • Ford Suisse rolls out special edition Focus RS WRC

Ford Focus RS WRC special edition for Switzerland – Click above for image gallery of livery proposals

While the rest of us think “rallying”, the Swiss look at their snow-capped mountains and think “skiing”. That’s largely because the Swiss are not known to be car people. But for every rule there’s an exception.

In Switzerland those exceptions include the efforts of notable speed-freaks like Peter Sauber (of F1 fame), Frank Rinderknecht (Rinspeed) and Franco Sbarro (the flamboyant coachbuilder – not the food-court pizza guy). And we can now add Ford to that list, as the Detroit automaker’s Swiss subsidiary is rolling out a special edition Focus RS to pay tribute to the 40th anniversary of the company’s iconic RS division, exclusively for the Swiss market.

Although mechanically identical to the existing Focus RS – not much change needed there – the Focus RS WRC edition wears a special livery submitted and chosen through an online forum. Black and green decals overlay a white background, complimented by blacked-out 19″ OZ Superturismo GT alloys, while inside, a special plaque carries the Hancocks of Ford’s top rally ace Mikko Hirvonen and his co-pilot Jarmo Lehtinen.

Only 50 examples will be offered, exclusively in Switzerland at a price of 55,900 Swiss francs – equivalent to about $53k in American greenbacks and representing a 2000-franc premium over the standard Focus RS. We’ll see if we can grab a closer look when we descend upon the multilingual alpine nation for the Geneva Motor Show next month, but in the meantime you can view the top liveries proposed in the gallery below and, if your French, German or Italian is up to the task, check out the press release after the jump. After all, while “speed” is not among the languages commonly spoken in Switzerland, neither is English.

And if some of you longtime readers think that a 50-unit Focus WRC special edition sounds familiar, well, it should. Back in 2007, The Euro Oval did a similar package based on the Focus ST.

  • Maruti WagonR vague review

    Hi!
My brother just bought a White WagonR from Vipul Motors Faridabad. I got a chance to drive his new car today. Precisely, just ten minutes ago, I was driving his car. This is a very vague report and my first here on Team-BHP too. I apologize for any points missed out.

    Pros-
    1. The Engine which has clocked roughly around 1000Km was smooth and vaguely audible inside the cabin.
    2. The gearbox was smooth and there was no "stickiness" while shifting gears.
    3. The clutch was surprisingly soft.
    4. He has a JVC Head-Unit and JBL speakers for In-car entertainment which sounded good. But, I felt that my Pioneer speakers were better in Bass (When set to "Powerful" and adjusting Bass to 3).
    5. The steering was soft and easy to adjust to after driving my Zen’s Non-Assisted steering.
    6. The ingress and egress was a boon for us keeping in mind we are quite tall.

    Cons-
    1. The driver side A-pillar is a BIG obstruction in visibility as compared to my Zen’s(2000).
    2. The horn could be heard inside a bit disturbingly.
    3. Rear legroom when I was driving and had my cousin beside me (both of us above 6 Feet tall) was poor.

Thanks all. I hope you like it.

@All- This wasn’t my car so I got just a few Kms to drive it, this is a very basic drive report. Any questions shall be tried to be answered if possible.
