  • Chicago labor chief Dennis Gannon quits

Dennis Gannon, President of the Chicago area’s largest labor organization, has announced he will not seek a third term when officers of the Chicago Federation of Labor are elected in June.

At a meeting earlier this week, Gannon notified the members of the CFL Executive Board, which represents Chicago’s largest local unions.

“I’m tired, I’m a little burnt out and this is a job where you’re on the clock 24/7,” Gannon said.

Gannon did say that this decision was not an easy one to make. Gannon said he had spent the last year discussing it with his wife before he decided it was best for him to step down.

He felt that this would be the best time for him to move on.

“It has been extremely difficult, but the decision not to run for a third term is right for me and my family. I love this labor movement and I have loved this job, but the time is right for me to move on,” Gannon said in a press release on Feb. 4.

As the president of the CFL, Gannon oversees 300 unions, comprised of half a million members. Gannon has been President for the past eight years.

Prior to his presidency, he spent eight years as secretary-treasurer and one year as the assistant to the president. Gannon will continue to serve as president until the end of June.

“I am proud of our many accomplishments during my time at the Chicago Federation of Labor. This job requires 120 percent from a leader who can stand up for working people throughout Chicago and Cook County,” Gannon said.

“But the time is right for new leadership that will continue to move this organization forward on behalf of the people we represent.”

Gannon’s stepping down comes at a very difficult time for the CFL.

The CFL is still trying to fend off a furious push by Wal-Mart to build as many as five Chicago super-centers that sell groceries and pressure to create jobs and boost city revenues.

Last year, Gannon helped engineer a package of cost-cutting concessions that helped Mayor Daley avert more than 1,000 layoffs, including furlough days and comp. time instead of cash overtime.

Gannon said in his press release that he is backing current Secretary-Treasurer Jorge Ramirez for president in the election.

  • Teaching Ancient Civilizations with Children’s Literature: African Food and Drink

     African Food and Drink

    African Food and Drink

    Introduction and Summary:

Mmm! Delicious! Exquisite! If you have ever wondered what types of food Africans traditionally eat or what they taste like, then African Food and Drink by Martin Gibrill is the book just for you! This book may be old but it is perfect for children who are curious about the different types of African cuisine out in the world. The most interesting part about this book is that some of the pages contain recipes for actual African dishes, which is amazing. Some of these exquisite dishes include: Maharagwe (Spiced red beans), Bidia (a mixture of milk, cornmeal and water), Peanut Stew and best of all, Peanut Cookies!

African Food and Drink does not center only on the foods and drinks that Africans generally consume.  It also provides information on the cultures of many African countries like Mali, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, etc. It talks about African languages, “There are as many as 2,000 African languages spoken throughout Africa and it is not uncommon for individuals to be fluent in two or three of these; many of these languages have no written form”; Markets: “The market at Timbuctu in Mali, for example, is famous for the role it played as a trading center”; Fishing: “Mali, which is landlocked, catches nearly 7 percent of the region’s fish from the Niger River”; and even Religion: “There are three major religious influences in Africa: traditional religions, Islam and Christianity.” The book is more like an encyclopedia on Africa then it is on just food and drink. Perhaps it should consider changing its title!

    Curriculum Connections:

Despite the age of the book and the fact that it is written mostly for kids from Kindergarten through second grade, this book does a fine job in incorporating bits and pieces from the Virginia Standards of Learning History and Social Science parts 3.2, 3.4 and 3.8 : The Study of Ancient Mali. This book describes small parts of ancient Mali’s culture, including religion, education, geography and of course, food and drink!

    Additional Resources:

http://www.fcps.edu/KingsParkES/technology/mali/index.htm : This creative website contains the Mali Scavenger Hunt, a perfect activity for students to solve. It also provides numerous amounts of teacher resource material.

http://www.vmfa.museum/mali_activities.html : This website sponsored by the Virginia Museum provides many cultural classroom activities that pertain to ancient Mali, a must for students and teachers. It also provides teachers with a lesson plan on the art and cultures of ancient Mali.

http://africa.mrdonn.org/index.html: This unique website provides lots of information on a large number of African countries like Mali, Ghana, Egypt, etc. Filled with games, activities and history, this website will provide fun and facts for both students and teachers.

  • New bill introduced to cover half the cost of 10 million home solar power systems

A bill has been proposed that might help spread solar power for homes, which is still mighty expensive if you want it to do anything but run a lamp or two. The bill, proposed by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, would cover up to half the cost of up to ten million solar power system installations. Whether they’d actually hit that 10 million limit is something of a question, of course, considering solar still isn’t a bargain at half off. I mean, it’s a bargain for Mother Nature, but not for a poor blogger.

One option, of course, is for local governments to “rent” citizens’ roofs and install solar power that is fed back into the grid, in exchange for a bill reduction or tax credit. That way a city could buy a few thousand installs (and this money is being spent locally) and reduce the power burden of certain areas of the city.

Or… what-not. I don’t know, I’m not a civil engineer. But this sounds like a good idea to me.

  • O’Hare company accused of contract fraud

The largest female-owned subcontractor on Mayor Daley’s multibillion-dollar O’Hare Modernization Project was hit with federal charges Thursday that accuse the company of illegally collecting more than $9.5 million in public contracts.

It’s the first indictment in a wide-ranging investigation first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Sources have said the probe includes Ald. Patrick Levar’s brother, Michael, who once oversaw construction contracts at O’Hare.

Michael Levar has not been charged.

Azteca Supply Co. is a certified minority- and woman-owned business, but federal authorities charge that even as it was hired to do contracting work on runway and restroom projects at O’Hare, the company improperly subcontracted work to firms owned by white men.

Azteca president and owner Aurora Venegas, 61, was charged with five counts of mail fraud. Her husband, Thomas Masen, 65, was charged with two counts of mail fraud and one count of making false statements to an FBI agent.

Venegas was allegedly little more than a supplier of materials obtained from National Concrete Pipe Co., where her husband works as a comptroller.

When the FBI served a search warrant on National Concrete Pipe two years ago, the company president, John Esposito, 65, assaulted one of the FBI agents. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor.

The investigation, conducted by the FBI, city Inspector General’s Office and U.S. Attorney, found that Azteca fraudulently received more than $9.6 million between 2001 and July 2008, according to charges.

In that time, Azteca was hired to do O’Hare work as well as a $57,168 in landscaping work for a new Metra station in Orland Park.

In 2007, the city awarded a $149.9 million runway contract to Kiewit/Reyes AJV, and Azteca was one of the female-owned subcontractors hired to meet City Hall’s requirements.

Azteca was supposed to provide concrete pipe, but National Concrete Pipe allegedly did the work. Kiewit/Reyes spokesman Kent Grisham said the company was unaware that Azteca was subcontracting the work to a white-owned firm.

“We relied on the city and the city’s certification of Azteca’’ as a female-owned company, Grisham said. “We’ve done nothing wrong. We have cooperated in the investigation.’’

In the Orland Park case, Venegas is accused of acting as a minority “pass-through” for subcontracting work, where Azteca allegedly secured the subcontract but really had another company do the work.

Joseph Duffy, an attorney for Azteca and Venegas, said Thursday he was disappointed with the charges, describing Venegas as a “hardworking and successful minority businesswoman since 1991.”

“The government’s allegation that Ms. Venegas and Azteca are sham minority contractors arose out of claims made by a disgruntled former employee,” Duffy said in a statement.

“These allegations are false, and Ms. Venegas is looking forward to vindication at trial.”

An attorney for Masen could not be reached for comment.

  • Can whoever is writing Charter’s cable guide stop spoiling classic sports games and ruining my father-in-law’s nights?

Here’s the thing, my father-in-law is a hard-working UPS driver. He defines blue-collar. After a long day driving around in a brown truck and wearing a brown jumpsuit in the freezing Michigan winter, he wants nothing more than to come home and enjoy a random sports game — sometimes live, sometimes a re-broadcast. But the damn TV guide keeps ruining the fun for him. Look at that pic and tell me what’s wrong.

    The description,

Repeat, From 1996: Pittsburgh’s 20-16 win over the Colts in the AFC Championship Game. The game ended with a dramatic Hail Mary pass. (Football)

It tells who wins and the game’s final play. That’s not fun. It ruins the experience. All the discription needs to say is,

Repeat, From 1996: The Pittsburgh Steelers battle the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game. (Football)

That’s it. Maybe they could throw in some facts quickly gathered off of Wikipedia like the quarterbacks or TV announcers, but that’s probably asking too much.

  • Science continues to improve our lives with new unbreakable pint glass

As a homebrewing enthusiast, I’m constantly trying to improve my process and my equipment. I’m busy making a DIY bottle tree to dry my bottles right now. The British, quite probably the world’s best drinkers, have been hard at work improving the vessel of beer delivery, the pint glass. Two new shatter-proof glasses have been unveiled by the British Home Office, designed in collaboration with the Design Council.

Why bother with a shatter-proof pint glass? According to Yahoo! News “[t]here are about 87,000 alcohol-related glass attacks each year, with many resulting in hospital visits.” Holy smokes that’s a lot of beer-related violence! My biggest worry when I break a glass is how soon I can replace it, not whether or not some shard will soon make its home in my neck! “Officials swore the country would save billions in health care costs by coming up with a glass that doesn’t double as a lethal weapon.”

Always a resourceful people, the Brits were sure to highlight a secondary benefit to this new shatter-proof pint glass: “The glass could keep the beer colder for longer.”

  • Iraq: 7 million Shia pilgrims pour into Karbala

areview.co.cc: Hundreds of thousands of Shia Muslims have poured into Iraqs holy city of Karbala, ignoring government warnings that they could be targets of bomb attacks. Pilgrims from around the world have made their way to the city, 80km south of Baghdad, to mark the religious rite of Arbaeen, which culminates today. Arbaeen marks the end of a 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad who was killed in a seventh century battle in Karbala. Around 30,000 troops and police have been deployed to protect pilgrims. Mohammed al-Moussawi, the head of the provincial council, estimated that seven million pilgrims had visited the city in the past 10 days, including from regional countries and Iran. He said motorbike-propelled carts had been banned from the city. Twenty-five medical teams and 10 mobile clinics have been deployed with 65 ambulances on call. Two units of counter-terrorism forces have been sent to the city from Baghdad.

  • Pak-India negotiations can stabilise the region: US State Department

areview.co.cc: US State Department has said that Pak-India negotiations are in favour of the region. In a media briefing in Washington, US State Department spokesman P J Crowley said that negotiations between Pakistan, India and Afghanistan will help in maintaining peace in the region. India offered to resume high-level peace talks with Pakistan, an overture that reflected a significant warming between the nuclear-armed countries one year after the deadly siege on Mumbai. The United States has been pressuring both countries to resume talks, which would free up Islamabad to concentrate on its fight against the Taliban militants, a key to US strategy in Afghanistan. P J Crowley, spokesman for the State Department, said the US is encouraging dialogue among India, Pakistan and Afghanistan as way to achieve stability. We certainly have been encouraging steps that both Pakistan and India could take, and a more stable region that is focused on both interests that they share and threats that they share, he added. Pakistan has been escalating its fight with the Taliban in recent months. Pakistan’s tribal regions, along the rugged, mountainous border with Afghanistan, are believed to be the main strongholds of both the Taliban and Al-Qaeda and are thought to be used as staging grounds for attacks against US forces inside Afghanistan. American officials have been pressing Pakistan for months to intensify its attacks against the militants.

  • Apple may be paying to get flawed iMacs back in the UK

Apple is reportedly offering UK iMac owners full refunds plus 15 percent of the original purchase price for 27″ iMacs suffering any of the maladies that have plagued the model since its release in October of 2009. According to an Apple Authorized shop speaking to Gizmodo, Apple has already completed the transaction with two of the shop’s customers. Apple seems to be brokering the deals due to a shortage in parts needed to repair the units, as well as a repair backlog of over 200 machines.

The 27″ iMacs have had problems from the get-go with some users reporting issues with discolored displays and others reporting flickering screens. Most recently, there were reports of an internal support document telling technicians to explain that slight screen variations are normal, but if the customer continued to complain, to say that the machine could be repaired in “approximately three weeks.” If that wasn’t enough, they were told to offer a refund, but not a replacement.

When Ars called an official Apple Store in the US to inquire about refunds, they were of little help and recommended we make an appointment with a “Genius” or call the AppleCare support number. Likewise, when we called two Apple Certified dealers, we received very similar responses. One tech did direct us to the recently released firmware update, but was unable to tell us anything regarding refunds or part lead times.

The reports are based on a small number of cases, but Gizmodo’s source seemed quite confident that these were not isolated results. Nonetheless, we remain skeptical of Apple offering refunds—let alone refunds plus 15 percent—until more reports come in. That being said, if you are at your wit’s end with your iMac, it can’t hurt to ask. Maybe with the extra cash you can upgrade to a Mac Pro.

  • Panasonic cops to rising black levels in its plasma HDTVs, but questions still remain

Over the last several months complaints that Panasonic’s plasma HDTVs experience sudden adverse changes in their black levels after a certain number of viewing hours have been piling up in an AVSForum thread, and now that behavior has been confirmed, though not very well explained, in a response the company sent to CNET today:

In order to achieve the optimal picture performance throughout the life of the set, Panasonic Viera plasma HDTVs incorporate an automatic control which adjusts an internal driving voltage at predetermined intervals of operational hours. As a result of this automatic voltage adjustment, background brightness will increase from its initial value … The newest Viera plasma HDTVs incorporate an improved automatic control which applies the voltage adjustments in smaller increments. This results in a more gradual change in the Black Level over time.

Especially considering many buyers purchased their televisions specifically for those deep black levels, you can see why a TV suddenly going Sammy Sosa overnight would be upsetting. One of the reigning theories in the thread indicated by poster & calibrator D-Nice has been that this is by design, but a flaw in the settings caused the large jumps (around double the brightness, as measured by several owners light meters) instead of a much more subtle change. So what now for owners or potential buyers? Without more details about what is going on and whether or not anything can be done about it, like CNET’s David Katzmeier, it’s hard to see how we can continue to recommend these HDTVs for purchase without knowing what they will do months or years down the line. The ball is in Panasonic’s court now, a speedy response could do a lot to assuage the concerns of current and potential owners.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Did Apple Just Ban Location-Based Ads in iPhone Apps?

Apple has posted a shocking, if vague, warning to iPhone app creators in its developer forums: submit an app that uses user location data “primarily” for targeting advertisements and that app will be sent right back to you to be changed.

Many mobile developers are planning on monetizing their apps precisely through location-based advertising. There’s no clear criteria for how much advertising is too much, and perhaps Apple will exercise discretion in recognizing advertisements as merely supplemental to other features in many apps, but the language used by the company is wholly disconcerting and is another great example of the perils of developing on a closed platform like the iPhone. This is crazy.

    Sponsor

The notification went up yesterday in the Apple Developer forum and was written about hours ago by the blog MacNN.

If you build your application with features based on a user’s location, make sure these features provide beneficial information. If your app uses location-based information primarily to enable mobile advertisers to deliver targeted ads based on a user’s location, your app will be returned to you by the App Store Review Team for modification before it can be posted to the App Store.

Some people immediately accused Apple of implementing this policy so that it alone could use location-based advertisements on the platform.

But what’s with this language about how location can only be used to “provide beneficial information?” Who makes this decision and where on earth does Apple get off making a policy like this? The company says earlier that location may be used to tell phone owners about “nearby restaurants, ATMs, and other location-based information.” What if the restaurants serve unhealthy food, though? What are you going to spend that ATM cash on if this iPhone app helps you find it? How does Apple determine that advertisements, particularly ones for things you could buy in the place where you are, are not beneficial?

What this means for location based social networking, Augmented Reality, mobile eCommerce and other types of applications is unclear. Apple is going to have to do something about this. Location-based advertising has been expected to make economically feasible a universe of new mobile applications. The prospect of Apple taking an anti-advertising stance in selecting which iPhone apps to allow into the App Store is pure insanity.

Above: One extreme example of location used to deliver ads on an iPhone. Back to the depths of Hell, iButterfly!

  • Seesmic for Android Now Offers Support for Multiple Twitter Accounts

seesmic_logo_jul09.pngSeesmic just launched a new version of its Android app, which, among other things, now offers support for multiple Twitter accounts and cross-posting from different accounts. The Seesmic team also worked hard on polishing the app’s user interface and added a number of minor new features like extra large font in the app and the ability to change your Twitter password from within the app. Seesmic for Android now also remembers your scroll position in the timeline.

    Sponsor

New Features: X-Large Fonts, Multiple Accounts, Better Auto-Correction

By default, Seesmic now loads new tweets on top of the older ones (just like Tweetie on the iPhone). A lot of users prefer this system of loading new tweets, but if you would rather see Seesmic jump straight to the top of your new tweets, you can switch this feature off in the settings menu.

According to Seesmic, support for multiple accounts was one of the most often requested features. Thanks to the app’s support for multiple accounts, you can now also easily post the same message to multiple accounts simultaneously.

Another new feature in Seesmic for Android is support auto-correction and auto-capitalization in the composer.

    But What About the iPhone?

Seesmic was already the best Twitter app on Android and this new release just takes it one step further. According to Seesmic’s founder and CEO Loic Le Meur, over 100,000 people have already downloaded the app. We tested Seesmic for Android on a Nexus One and it’s worth noting that the new version of the app feels even more responsive than the first release.

Given how well Seesmic for Android works, we can only hope that Seesmic will soon release an iPhone app (the company already offers a BlackBerry app). The last time we talked to Le Meur, however, he told us that the company wants to be able to offer something special and not just look like a “me-too” player on the iPhone, so it might still be a while before we get to see Seesmic on the iPhone.

  • Book Publishing Industry Just Now Realizing That Change Is Turbulent?

As the latest episode of “the ebook wars” continues, there’s still lots of chatter about last weekend’s Macmillan/Amazon fight. Apparently a lot of authors are angry at Amazon for this. While I can understand how the fight might hurt some authors — and they’re justifiably worried about Amazon’s dominance in the ebook market today, I think they need to take a larger view of things. The reason why Amazon tried (though, failed) to stand up to Macmillan was to avoid Macmillan making some really stupid decisions about ebook pricing and distribution windows. That Macmillan won may have helped some authors in the short run (avoiding them being cut off by Amazon), but could hurt in the long run by fighting against the economic tide.

Perhaps the best summary of this situation was written by Steven Pearlstein at the Washington Post, who recognizes that this is a technological transformation, and while it may be messy in the interim, the end results should be quite positive:

While markets have their flaws, over the long run they are good at executing these technological transformations…. Reports of the death of book publishing, like those of music publishing and newspaper publishing, are greatly exaggerated. Business models will change, companies will come and go, and people will lose their jobs. But at the end of the process, there will be fewer people who will be paid higher incomes to produce a wider array of products at lower prices. There’s a word for that — progress — and it’s exciting to see it unfold right in front of us.

If only those going through that transformation could recognize it in those terms…

  • Live-blog: A rundown on Facebook’s new redesign

Facebook is rolling out a new redesign to 80 million users live tonight. We’re here with Peter Deng, a product manager at Facebook, who is explaining the changes.

The left-hand navigation bar has been beefed up with the new dashboard for application and games along. In the gaming section, Facebook credits are notably highlighted.

Facebook’s buddy list for chat has moved to the left-hand side of the page. He says chat has been “highly underrated” for a long time even though users say it’s one of their favorite features.

“Chat is a hugely popular feature on Facebook and we’ve made it a lot more accessible with people that you’re most likely to communicate with on the left-hand side,” Deng said.

They’ve also made search more prominent. Friend requests and the inbox icon have moved up to the top left-hand corner. Notifications are now in the top right-hand corner, but they’ll only be there temporarily until they’re phased out on March 1.

Seesmic, a client for reading status updates across Twitter, Facebook and other services, just launched an update to its Android app that supports multiple accounts.

Because the San Francisco-based company has held off launching an iPhone app, Android is one of its more prominent stages for demonstrating its mobile technology. (The other is Blackberry. Seesmic also recently launched a touchscreen version of its client aimed at mainstream audiences last month.)

  • Haiti: Russian Interpol Officer Blogs About Disaster

    Yuri Firsov

    Yuri Firsov

Until recently, the Russian blogosphere didn’t have its own citizen media source in Haiti. There were no direct witnesses of the devastating earthquake among Russian bloggers. But the bloggers suddenly discovered the blog of Yuri Firsov [RUS], an Interpol officer in Haiti.

Firsov is one of eight Russians who serve in the UN criminal police (Interpol) in the country. As an UN officer, he travels from one hot spot to another and occasionally finds time to jot down his impressions on his blog. Firsov arrived to Haiti at the beginning of December 2009 when he cheerfully updated his blog with detailed description of his arrival.

His second post from Haiti appeared on January 14, two days after the first shock. Since then, Firsov was writing blog posts almost on a daily basis providing his Russian-speaking readers with inside look on the horrible tragedy.  Below are the most interesting extracts from his posts:

    January 12, 2010 [RUS]

Somewhere around 4:45 PM… I felt like my Nissan (I was driving) suddenly lost control and I felt like I was driving up on a “grate”. The car slid to the left side of the road… and on the right, like in a dream, a very long concrete fence began to shiver like it was made of printed cotton and not of huge concrete blocks. We stopped and found out that our Nissan is still shivering… I went out to the road – it was wobbling gradually under our feet. Even a fool would understand what was happening… I understood as well… to be precise, all three of us understood that this was an earthquake… a minute after I saw houses that were no longer hiding behind the fence, they were without roofs and sank a little to the side… People started running and crawling out on the road. Many of those were covered with blood.
Hotel Haiti Destroyed By the Quake, phot by Yuri Firsov

Hotel Haiti Destroyed By the Quake, phot by Yuri Firsov

Two days later, Firsov wrote [RUS] that all the chiefs of the UN police force were found dead [EN]. The streets were ruled by chaos and anarchy. From time to time, resuming shocks provoked panic among people. Dead bodies wrapped in cloth were laying right on the city streets and houses looked like pleats. There were rescuers only near few blockages. The UN base had to be turned into a hospital. One could hear screams of the operated and feel the smell of death all around the base.

On January 15, Firsov wrote [RUS] that his colleagues were spending nights at the office because they were afraid to stay at home. People left their clothes, personal belongings and even mattresses at the UN base just not to come back to the houses which might become their graves at any given moment. Dead bodies were burned to prevent epidemic.

While approaching our hospital, we saw a smog cloud that covered almost all the district and felt stinking smell of burnt flesh… some more wrapped-up bodies were laying on the sidewalk not far away… Smoke, depending on the wind direction, either covered the full camp or was carried away to the end of the street… Well, yeah… Unpleasant neighbors…

Yuri also described the arrival of a woman with two kids who spent 84 hours under wreckage. A nurse that was taking care of kids had to lull them by herself since the mother was too shocked to do that. Yuri took a picture of a tired and frightened boy hiding under a piece of rag.

On January 17, Firsov talked [RUS] about his new habit and the most frightening thing about the earthquake:

После Югославии у меня на долгие годы осталась привычка , выходя из машины не вступать на обочину, тем более на траву и смотреть под ноги везде, где нет твердого покрытия… После Гаити теперь буду долго смотреть на люстры и стаканы с водой… Все же страшен не сам процесс трясения…если конечно не застал он под крышей здания… страшны последствия – хаос,разрушения, боль и жертвы, слом всего устоявшегося уклада..

I have a habit after being in Yugoslavia. When I go out of a car, I never put my feet on the roadside and never on the grass. I always look under my feet everywhere where I step and where’s no solid cover. After Haiti, I will have a habit to look at lamps and glasses with water. It’s not the shiver what is the most frightening…of course unless you’re not trapped under the roof… consequences are the most frightening – chaos, destruction, pain and victims, demolition of the whole order…

On January 21, Firsov wrote [RUS] about a patrol to the Cité Soleil, a shanty town, that the community regarded to be the most dangerous area in Haiti. However, the situation turned out to be relatively quiet. There were no shootings or aggression, Firsov said.

At half past nine we were at Cité Soleil. Small houses sat close to one another in the darkness, a lot of them destroyed, most of the people slept on the streets… this is why we were going very slow, going round small groups of sleeping people… someone slept on the bed sheets, someone had mattresses, someone just laid down on concrete. At night, it all seemed as footage from a sci-fi disaster movie… people on the street, half-destroyed frames of houses, beams instead of roofs…

While we maneuvered round the bodies, people raised their heads when our cars approached, looked at us, but there was neither hostility nor aggression on their faces. And what about all those scary stories people told us about bands of looters active in the city? I have no words – this neighborhood has many problems, the criminal situation is much worse than anywhere, the poverty is shocking and there is unemployment along  with no positive developments in the future… But we went through and no one was attacking us, no one was shooting… and my own words that it’s dangerous to come here without a battalion of Brazilians seemed very stupid for me then… I got confused by the prejudices and others’ unchecked opinion promoted by mass media…

On January 23, Firsov wrote [RUS] about constant aftershocks and how the animals reacted to them a couple of hours earlier.

Eleven days passed since the quake… We returned from Cite Soleil yesterday at 2 a.m.… suddenly dogs started howling, roosters started crowing, and donkeys started making their inarticulate sounds… In the morning I woke up from the shocks – aftershock again… Couple of powerful pushes made me jump off the bed… So it looks like dogs howl couple of hours prior to the shocks… I couldn’t figure out any regularity in the animals’ behavior… they either got simultaneously silent, making you think of the worst, or shouted altogether, making you feel like running out to the street – but the result is all the same.…Earthquake is like  awar, but you can’t feel or see the enemy… this enemy hits you suddenly, from under the ground, to be precise… all the rest is up to you – every man for himself. When I was lying at night, slowly rocking on the aftershock vibrations, I thought that even in the extreme situations – in Kosovo and in Bosnia – when there was shooting or during the civil unrest in Timor, there was no such feeling, there was no animal fear, the fear that you don’t have any control of your life… when there’s shooting, adrenaline pumps to your head and you think “we’ll see who will win”… and here…
  • As It Celebrates Its Sixth Birthday, Facebook Surges To 400 Million Users

It’s been six years to the day that Facebook launched, and the company’s massive growth is showing no signs of slowing down. Minutes ago, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted a note to the site’s blog celebrating the milestone. In it, he says that Facebook will cross the 400 million user mark this week. And it’s been less than five months since the social network hit 300 million.

To celebrate, the company is holding its own version of a party — it’s Hackathon time. That means all of the company’s engineers are about to embark on all night coding sessions. Previous Hackathons have given birth to things like Facebook Video and its new HipHop PHP converter. Zuckerberg also says that we’ll be seeing some new product launches tonight (we’ll be covering them as soon as each goes live).

In light of the event, here’s a collection of screenshots of Facebook profiles and homepages from the last few years (Facebook actually put most of this gallery together in honor of its fifth birthday, but it’s always fun to look back at how far the site has come). Also note that the last screenshot in the timeline has its days numberd — Facebook is currently rolling out another redesign.

A lot has changed, much of it for the better. But I still miss the glory days when a poke took up a quarter of my screen.
