  • Obama Anuncia Medidas para Impulsar Biocombustibles, Carbón Limpio

    02.03.10 10:00 AM

  • Morgan Stanley: Even We Can’t Believe How Fast The Euro Has Unraveled

    euro

Morgan Stanley’s (MS) currency analysts have been bearish on the euro for some time, but even they are stunned by the speed at which everything is unraveling, and now they’re downgrading it further

Having reached some of our targets earlier than anticipated,
we have made some changes to our currency forecasts
mainly centered around the euro. We now forecast EUR/USD
to fall to 1.24 by year-end from 1.32 previously. We have also
lowered our EUR/GBP forecast following the Bank of
England’s move to pause its QE program. We see EUR/GBP
    at 0.83 by year-end and GBP/USD at 1.49.

Our global currency outlook for 2010 had one major theme
which was a reversal in the “punish the printer” theme. Our
thesis for currencies in 2010 was that the huge excess
liquidity conditions that prevailed in 2009 and drove many
currencies into misalignment would reverse in 2010 as central
banks withdraw liquidity and the US economy outperforms.
We expected exchange rates to move back towards fair
    value.

    euroThey continue:

Downgrading Our Outlook for the Euro
We are becoming increasingly concerned about the prospects
for the euro. As Exhibit 4 shows the trade-weighted euro is
overvalued by around 19% according to our models and a fall
towards fair value would seem appropriate from here. The
euro’s overvaluation has perhaps contributed to the growing
strains within the Euro area as some of the weaker
economies would presumably have had weak currencies
through the crisis without the common currency.
However, owing to the ECB’s “passive” QE policy, the euro
has benefitted as the market punished the “active” printers
(USD and GBP) in 2009. We define “active” printers as those
who expanded their balance sheets by buying assets whereas
the ECB supplied liquidity through tenders allowing the market
to determine the demand for funds. The ECB’s exit strategy is
therefore less complex, which is partially why the euro
    strengthened last year.

  • In wake of hack, Google negotiating cooperation with the NSA

In January, Google went public with news that some of its systems had been hacked, along with those of a number of US-based companies. The attacks had targeted both accounts maintained by political activists and commercial code, and Google pointed the finger straight at China, vowing to change its entire approach to business in that country. But a report now suggests that the company is also looking to beef up its internal defenses to prevent a repeat of the attacks.

The Washington Post is reporting that Google has started negotiations with the US National Security Agency about a collaborative effort to analyze the attack and figure out how best to prevent a recurrence. The Post is citing confidential sources, as the deal isn’t final and, even if it were, it’s unlikely that Google would seek to publicize it.

For starters, both organizations have already been the target of many complaints by privacy advocates, the NSA for its domestic surveillance efforts, Google for its data retention policies. The combination of the two would clearly make the advocates far more uneasy, and might help them make their case with the wider public. Meanwhile, as the report notes, private companies have often been loath to share information about their proprietary systems with the government for a variety of reasons.

That may explain why the negotiations have been going slowly, as the NSA would clearly need access to and understanding of Google’s infrastructure in order to fully evaluate the attacks and future risks. And that’s precisely the sort of proprietary information that Google is presumably reluctant to provide anyone with—even a highly secretive organization like the NSA.

  • Government warns of wireless network congestion again, rides iPad to push its spectrum agenda

The feds simply aren’t backing down from their incessant warnings of a wireless broadband spectrum crunch the likes of which the world has never seen, and they’ve seemingly found a great vehicle — the iPad — to help spread the message just a little further (and at a higher volume) than before. This time around, it’s the Omnibus Broadband Initiative’s director of scenario planning Phil Bellaria who’s sounding the alarm, saying that the iPad foretells “even greater demand for mobile broadband on the horizon” and asking that the people with the money and the power (the carriers and the FCC, respectively) do what it takes to make sure that the nation’s broadband infrastructure and policy are appropriately managed in light of that. Perhaps most provocative is his statement that “reaching an always-on wireless broadband future means that the spectrum can no longer remain attached solely to uses deemed valuable decades ago,” possibly a veiled reference to the FCC’s ongoing spat with TV broadcasters over the future of over-the-air broadcasts. Free TV or an iPad with a fast, functional browsing experience — if it came down to it, which would you prefer?

  • E criza.Otravim poporul !

  • Tiger Woods Leaving Sex Rehab; Returning To Golf In Accenture Tournament

Scandal-scarred golfer Tiger Woods is leaving the Mississippi clinic where he’s been receiving treatment for sex addiction for the past month, RadarOnline is reporting.

Tiger has reportedly completed the Gentle Path program at Pine Grove Center and will soon return home to his wife Elin and their two children in suburban Orlando.

“He should be out by the weekend,” a source told Radar. “They are giving their marriage another try.”

Word is Tiger will end his break hiatus from the sport that made him a star by participating in the Accenture Match Play Championship later this month — that’s interesting, since Accenture was the first major endorser to sever ties with the athlete when news of his sex scandal broke last December.

  • Xcode 101: Installing the 3.2 SDK alongside the 3.1.1 SDK

Are you doing production work and beta work at the same time? Need to install more than one SDK at once? If you’ve downloaded the 3.1.3 SDK and need to install it on the same system as the 3.2 beta SDK, you’ll want to use the Xcode installer’s destination chooser.

When given the option of where to install, click on the Developer folder to reveal the pop-up shown here to the right. To create a new folder/location choose “Other…” and use the standard file browser to create and select that location.

I personally use a named folder for all beta installs. My 3.2 beta is located in /Developer32 and I used the standard /Developer path for my 3.1.3 SDK update. Both SDKs coexist in peace with each other, although I did have to assign separate key macros (I’m a Quickeys addict) for normal Xcode and Interface Builder (in /Developer/Applications) and the beta versions of the same (in /Developer32/Applications for me). Having both SDKs available and separate will help you make sure you can test and code in both environments quickly and easily.

  • Location is Hot: Foursquare Traffic up 3X in 2 Months

Location sharing social network Foursquare saw traffic to its site triple in the last two months since November, according to new numbers from traffic analyst firm Hitwise today. The service has seen unprecedented media coverage lately and is no doubt sending more updates to Facebook and Twitter, prompting the growth in visits back to Foursquare that Hitwise is measuring.

Foursquare announced a fascinating deal with Canadian newspaper chain Metro late last month that would deliver local editorial content to users depending on the locations they check-in from. We called that deal a sign that the era of location-as-platform has arrived.

    Sponsor

Where was all this traffic to Foursquare coming from? Hitwise’s Matt Tatham told us it broke down like this last month:

    1. Google sent 24% of this traffic and it’s navigational not SEO. Thus probably because people saw media coverage and Googled for the company’s name.
    2. Twitter 21%
    3. Facebook 19%

Foursquare is just one of many location-based social networks available but it’s clearly growing fast. Business review site Yelp came out with its version of mobile check-ins last month as well. Many people presume it’s only a matter of time until Facebook moves into the location space, which will seriously shake that market up. Yahoo this week had a patent published for geo-located, social Augmented Reality. Location is hot.

We’ve got high hopes for a world of awesomeness built on top of platforms like these and Twitter’s new location API, though adoption of that data has been surprisingly slow in uptake.

Why is location as a platform so exciting? Because it can be mashed up with other information. Among people hanging out at this coffee shop, what news stories are bing read and shared the most today? (And who discovered those stories first?) You check-in at the local park a lot, would you like to read or perhaps contribute to the Wikipedia entry on it? There are the kinds of things that will become possible.

In the short term, it’s just plain fun to check in on the internet from your favorite locations around town. “Where are you” could become the new “what’s on your mind?”

  • Augmented Reality Coming to Video Conferencing

“The hologram of a DNA spiral that I’m holding in my hand,” your professor might say, “can be turned, twisted or expanded at-will and everyone on this video call will be able to see me do it.” Is that the distant future of education, sales and casual communication online? Not if Augmented Reality company Zugara has its way.

The company announced today that it is working on fast and easy shared webcam Augmented Reality and its first prototype is already available.

    Sponsor

Though hundreds or thousands of Augmented Reality products hit the market last year and a handful have been widely seen – many people still doubt the utility of this technology. Zugara’s approach seems to be one of the most clearly useful. If the company can pull-off making this kind of service fast, cheap and easy – we might find it in use in many different sectors. The webcam social shopper technology you see in the video is available now as a B2B service for apparel and shopping company partners.

Some AR proponents believe that in addition to the web browser and the mobile browser, the ability to view and interact with information placed on top of the world around us represents an important way that the internet will be interacted with in the future.

It’s exciting to look forward to a web that lives between our eyes and the physical world. The AR industry faces challenges but it’s one we’re watching closely.

  • And Now a Few Words of Happy Reassurance from National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair [Digital Daily]

Coming as it does after Google’s revelation that its network was compromised by malicious hackers, Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair’s warning that the United States is not yet able to guard its national networks against cyber attacks seems to be, well, stating the obvious. That said, it’s well worth noting, because the sophistication of the attacks against Google (GOOG) obviously does not bode well for national security.

“What we don’t quite understand as seriously as we should is the extent of malicious cyberactivity that grows, that is growing now at unprecedented rates, extraordinary sophistication,” Blair told the House Intelligence Committee in the course of delivering his annual threat assessment. “And the dynamic of cyberspace, when you look at the technological balance, right now it favors those who want to use the Internet for malicious purposes over those who want to use it for legal and lawful purposes.”

Sadly, the former seem to be far more on top of their game these days than the latter, which makes defending our financial, commercial and physical infrastructure all the more difficult.

“Attacks against networks that control the critical infrastructure in this country…could wreak havoc,” Blair continued. “Cyber defenders right now, it’s simply the facts of the matter, have to spend more and work harder than the attackers do, and our efforts frankly are not strong enough to recognize, deal with that reality.”

  • Ultra-rare 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO up for sale by RM Auctions… will it set a record?

    1963 Ferrari 250 GTO #4675GT – Click above for high-res image gallery

Very rarely does a Ferrari 250 GTO come up for sale, and if it does, you’ll probably never hear about it. Most sales are done behind closed doors, and the amount of said transactions are almost never disclosed to the public. That’s just part of the mystique behind the world’s most valuable car, and it’s partially why the cars are so coveted. Just 36 examples were built between 1962 and 1963, each still in existence and easily carrying an eight-figure price tag. A few years ago, a 250 GTO supposedly changed hands for nearly $30 million, but no one can completely confirm the rumor.

We will, however, have more details about the next sale of a 250 GTO. RM Auctions have announced that they will be doing a “private treaty sale” of 1963 250 GTO chassis #4675GT. The car has been in possession of its current Japanese owner, Yoshiho Matsuda, since 1996 (a low point for the value of the car compared to the high prices of the late 1980s), and it has an extensive racing history.

We saw the car at the Pebble Beach Concour d’Elegance back in 2004, and while its Series II bodywork isn’t quite as stunning as earlier models, it’s still an extraordinarily beautiful car. If you’ve got millions of dollars just sitting around, now is the time to break out the checkbook and buy your very own rolling piece of V12-powered Italian artwork. Hit the jump for the official press release from RM or click the high-res gallery below for a beautiful studio shot plus several of our photographs from our 2004 encounter with the car.
