“Reese reached around his neck and pulled him close for a hug. They kissed bye on the cheek – but it was a very friendly goodbye.”

  • Suburban Toyota owners have a hard choice to make

Evelyn Loper of Hoffman Estates Wednesday intended to drive her 2009 Toyota Camry to the local Chili’s to meet her husband for lunch.

Despite what U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said earlier – that Toyota owners should stop driving their cars affected by the company’s national gas pedal and floor mat recalls, she was determined to use her car. Still, she felt nervous about it.

“I’m concerned because they told us what to do – to put both feet on the brake and put it in neutral, but who’s going to think of that,” Loper said.

Affected Toyota owners are being asked not to call or take their vehicles into dealerships for repairs before being notified by the dealers themselves.

“But still they should have right away let people know,” Loper said.

Loper’s model is among the 2.3 million vehicles affected by a sticky accelerator pedal being recalled by the Japanese automaker. Toyota said Wednesday that vehicles not experiencing symptoms are safe to drive, despite earlier comments from LaHood, who later softened his remarks.

Still, for a suburbanite to abruptly stop driving could be difficult, considering some areas have little or no mass transportation. And some people have few alternatives or resources to rent another vehicle to get to work or school. Is all the commotion about the recalls worth altering your lifestyle?

Calm down, everyone, said Suzanne Fogel, chair of the marketing department at DePaul University and an expert on consumer behavior.

“Consumers have every right to be cautious, but they don’t need to panic,” Fogel said.

In fact, Toyota owners shouldn’t be so paranoid as to stop driving unless they notice the symptoms of the gas pedal problem outlined by the company.

Fogel compared the massive Toyota recall, which has damaged the company’s name, to what happened to Tylenol when its name was practically destroyed when a mass murderer used its products to kill people. “People react to the top level of things and if there are scary accidents and problems, most people hear it in the news, and they don’t often take the time to investigate it more.”

Tylenol struggled at that time but eventually reclaimed its brand name. Toyota may do the same, she said.

Besides, renting another car is expensive and the risk of injury in your own Toyota could be minimal, Fogel said.

Toyota’s status has been damaged and, in the short term, could see its profit drop and lose market share to Ford and GM, said David Klein of Long Grove, senior vice president/financial consultant of RBC Wealth Management in Vernon Hills.

Toyota also is facing government scrutiny, possible civil penalties, class action lawsuits from the public and fallout from Wall Street, including Goldman Sachs cutting its shares from a “buy” to “neutral.”

“The lack of consumer confidence and the uncertainty will effects earnings,” said Klein.

While many experts believe Toyota has been handling this crisis well, others do not. “Toyota’s response to this crisis has been naive at best and pathetic at worst. The good news for them is that customers have a short memory,” said Jack Ablin of Highland Park, chief investment officer of Harris Private Bank in Chicago.

Still consumers could remain loyal, depending on how Toyota weathers this storm and the hope that no more serious problems occur, said Thomas Rowen, vice president and senior portfolio manager at Fifth Third Bank in Chicago.

“Some consumers will likely turn away from the brand, at least in the short-term,” said Rowen. “How quickly, effectively and fairly Toyota acts to resolve the accelerator issue will be key to avoiding a more lasting impact on the brand. Many car manufacturers have recalled models in the past, including a smaller recall of vehicles recently by Honda.”

Longtime Toyota owners, even like Rowen, are likely to remain loyal.

“It is a blow that the automotive industry does not need after two bad years,” said Rowen. “With the weakness of American auto manufacturers contributing to a near 15 percent unemployment rate in Michigan, the prospect of Toyota’s recent problems affecting manufacturing and sales of models made in U.S. plants is certainly unwelcome.”

Still, Belen Gilondo of Mount Prospect said she’s not waiting.

“I was supposed to call today to the dealer because I need to know what to do,” she said after parking her 2009 Toyota Corolla at Walmart in Hoffman Estates. She already had her floor mats replaced in November by a Chicago Toyota dealer due to a recall.

“I don’t know if it’s the same problem or not,” Gilondo said.

Gilondo added, she’s not too concerned about driving her car because she hasn’t had any problems.

  • AT&T Brings Sling Back to 3G

iphone_logo_dec08.pngGood things are happening for 3G users this week. While the ban on Skype over 3G ended months ago, AT&T just lifted the floodgates for streaming television content for Sling users. According to the New York Times’ Bits Blog, AT&T announced this morning that it will once again allow the SlingPlayer iPhone app to stream content over its 3G network.

This means that all you Slingbox users can now carry your TV with you whevever you go, not just where you can find a WiFi hotspot.

    Sponsor

AT&T first restricted Sling’s iPhone app last May, shortly after putting similar restrictions on Skype. While it removed the Skype restrictions months ago, with iPhone opening up the gates yesterday, AT&T said it had to run some tests before opening up to Sling again.

“Since mid-December 2009, AT&T has been testing the app and has recently notified Sling Media — as well as Apple — that the optimized app can run on its 3G network,” quotes the Times from an AT&T press release.

While the upgraded app will not be immediately available, Apple is expected to approve the app soon. It will be available as a free upgrade for users who have already bought a previous version.

  • Kids Don’t Blog Anymore? Maybe They Never Did

Is blogging for old people? Apparently so. Well, at least according to a new study from Pew Internet Project, that is. Today’s youngest generation of online users are no longer interested in consuming long-form content like blogs, says the research. Instead, communication among teens tends to involve brief bursts of information, like a Facebook status update or a text message. Pew’s findings state that only 14% of tweens and teens ages 12 to 17 now report that they blog, down from 25% only four years ago. They’re also less interested in commenting on their friends’ blogs, too, with only 52% reporting doing so, down from over three-quarters back in 2006.

    Sponsor

    Social Networks Preferred to Blogging

In the new report, findings show that 73% of wired teens now use social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace, a big jump from the 55% who did so back in 2006. Young adults (18-29), too, choose social networking sites as a preferred method of communication. Among this group, 72% report using these sites. Meanwhile, only 40% of those 30 and older do the same.

But blogging? Passé, says the report. The medium once used for sharing either news and/or personal thoughts and feelings is no longer popular among teens. The why is simple: Facebook. With the ability to update your status on social networking sites, the need to communicate using long-form mechanisms like sentences and – ugh! – paragraphs is no longer necessary. Instead of summarizing a day’s events via blog post for example, a teen may simply update Facebook multiple times throughout the day with the details as to what’s happening in their life at the moment.

These shorter bursts of content, much like the ever-popular text messages sent between friends on cell phones, are easier-to-consume mini bits of information. They take only seconds to read, not minutes. And commenting on them takes only moments as well. Considering the hundreds of online friends people tend to accumulate on these social networking sites, those time savings really add up.

    Why the Decline in Blogging?

Although it’s obvious that the popularity of Facebook and its ilk have taken away from the teens’ desire to blog, Pew doesn’t go so far as to speculate why that is. One theory worth considering is that today’s teens are overloaded with information and simply don’t have the time to read long blog posts. They’re already too busy keeping up with texts, multiple social networking sites, email, instant messages, and phone calls – practically drowning in communication tools, it seems. And when there’s too much to consume, the easiest things to drop out of the mix would be those that take the most time: blogging, reading blogs, and commenting on blogs.

Another idea we haven’t seen mentioned anywhere yet is that it’s possible teens weren’t ever really into blogging to begin with. In Pew’s study, they count the blogs found within social networking sites along with what we would typically consider a blog – standalone websites like this one, The Huffington Post, Perez Hilton, Dooce, etc. However, Facebook and many other social networking sites don’t really have a blogging feature, but MySpace does. Coincidentally, MySpace’s popularity has been on the decline for years now. As MySpace visits dropped off, so did the usage of its “blogs.” In other words, if Pew counted MySpace blogs when asking teens if they commented on or wrote blogs themselves, there’s going to be a drop-off.

Blogging, in and of itself, may or may not appeal to teens. It’s hard to know considering how the survey questions were worded. If Facebook had a similar “blogs” feature as MySpace, the study may have read quite differently: “teen blogging soars!” To really determine how popular blogging is as an online activity, it may have been better to differentiate between the standalone sites and the long-form updates found within a social network. Failure to do so confuses the issue and leaves us without the answers a detailed study like this aims to deliver.

  • Financial Disaster Looms Larger As Los Angeles City Council Delays Budget Cuts For Another 30 Days

Cute Little Girl Protests Against Budget Cuts

City workers and union members won a victory against financial prudence in Los Angeles today.

The city council spent all day yesterday discussing drastic cuts made necessary by LA’s $208 million budget gap. The city’s budget analysis proposed around 1,000 job cuts to save money.

And so the municipal unions went wild, packing the meeting with hundreds of workers.

In response, the city council voted to postpone budget-related layoffs for 30 days.

Frighteningly, on the same day the council members voted against cutting jobs and consolidating the disability, human services and environmental affairs department, it also agreed to discuss making jobs cuts in the police and fire departments.

Even worse, LA council members are talking about “unconventional ways” of addressing their looming financial crisis.

“If I’m facing hard times . . . I’m going to go to my uncles. I’m going to go to my aunt. I’m going to ask them to borrow money,” Councilman Jose Huizar said, according to the LA Times. “But I’m going to tell them: ‘You know, I’ve got this ’67 Chevy. I could sell it a year from now and maybe I’ll pay you back with that.’ Can we do anything like that?”

The problem, of course, is that LA’s uncle is the State of California, which is facing a giant budgetary crisis of its own. It doesn’t have the money to bail out LA. And muni bond investors are unlikely to love the idea that LA will find some way to raise cash in the future to compensate for its inability to restrain spending now.

Will the ratings agencies wait 30 days before slamming LA? We’ll see.

  • What If Facebook Ever Got Serious About Becoming a News Aggregation Vampire? Well, It Would Be a Sparkly One! [BoomTown]

Here are two quotes that got me thinking about what would happen if Facebook–whose user base is inexorably marching toward 400 million–ever got serious about the news aggregation business.

First, perpetual apple-cart-upsetter Mark Cuban got everyone’s hackles raised this week by taking aim at online sites that aggregate news from other sources, most especially Google (GOOG).

Among other colorful things he said during a keynote speech:

“Google is a vampire, and you run scared. There is no reason to be indexed in Google…You haven’t gotten anything back except that you’ve turned into zombies…You’ve got to realize they’re vampires and you can’t be the dumb blonde showing your neck.”

Then, yesterday, in a fourth-quarter earnings call, AOL (AOL) CEO Tim Armstrong, answering a question about the renewal status of its search deal with Google, talked about how other outlets, especially Facebook, were now more important than ever to getting traffic for his company’s content.

“Our strategy on distribution is not relying on search,” said Armstrong. “Fragmentation is our friend.”

It was a curious way of putting it, but the message was clear and correct–it will be increasingly obvious that consumers will inevitably move away from the only-search paradigm to that of discovery through social and other jacked-up affiliation networks.

Of course, that puts a site like Facebook in a catbird’s seat, given vast seas of rich data flow through it all the time.

At any given moment, its users are trading bazillions of links to articles, blogs, videos, photo images and more, pointing the way out to their friends in a giant did-you-see-this mosh pit.

While it’s dispersed widely all over the social networking service–on the Wall, on fan pages, in email, in comments–one has to wonder what would happen if Facebook ever decided to start corralling the information using some kind of aggregation method.

Could it pick the most linked and emailed stories of the day? Could it select the most popular photos? Could it tell you accurately what its little slice of humanity was buzzing about on a minute-by-minute basis?

Of course it could, but as more of a new sparkly “Twilight” vampire than the old-time scary one Cuban was describing.

Not that it will. I once queried Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg about the idea that Facebook could make some sort of newfangled competitor to the still-powerful Yahoo (YHOO) News.

She said no pretty flatly, noting that the whole service was about people sharing all kinds of news and information with their friends already.

But, it is clear to me, that–much as Google moved into the automated new business–Facebook could do the same anytime it wanted and create what would probably be one of the top aggregation sites for any kind of topic on the Web.

The Silicon Valley phenom certainly could not be easily as de-indexed as Google could be by worried media companies, as the skeins of information are so enmeshed that separating them is impossible. And why would you?

In his speech, Cuban urged traditional media creators to stop the aggregation madness.

“Show some balls,” he said. “If you turn your neck to a vampire, they are [going to] bite. But at some point the vampires run out of people’s blood to suck.”

In a deeply socially connected world though, it’s a very different story. And, in that world, vampires really do live forever.

Please see this disclosure related to me and Google.

  • Fantasia Sets the Record Straight: No Foreclosure

American Idol’s Season 3 winner, Fantasia Barrino, is hitting the talk-show circuit to promote her new album and set the record straight on her much-publicized financial drama. The 25-year-old singer owed  $65,000 that she borrowed in 2006 to pay back taxes she owed the IRS and as a result, was at risk of losing her home.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Fantasia spilled all.

“The house problem wasn’t a foreclosure, and it wasn’t that I didn’t have the money. I’m not the richest, but I’ve always been a hard worker … and I thank God I’m still able to make ends meet. It could have been a lot better for me though if I would have had better management and better accountants…They ended up not paying my taxes and I had to clean up all that stuff. I had to hustle and bustle and make sure that was taken care of.”

Fantasia also told Oprah Winfrey that the situation was “very embarrassing” and confirmed that it was an auction on her home, not a foreclosure, that was threatening ownership of Fantasia’s Charlotte, NC home.

An attorney for the Broward Energy Partners lending company said in a statement that the auction was called off because an agreement has been reached between both parties. If the agreement between the two parties had not been reached, the singer’s home would have been sold at auction on Monday, Jan. 12.

Zillow’s Zestimate for the home is $1.16 million and it is located in the Rain Tree neighborhood of Charlotte where the Zillow Home Value Index is $263,300, down 8.8% from the previous year. In Rain Tree, 0.09% of all homes were foreclosed upon in November 2009.

Barrino is looking to reclaim her superstar status with a new VH1 reality series “Fantasia For Real“.

  • News of GMAC job cuts, Updates from Deutsche, PNC, MetLife, Wells, NAMB; Common GFE mistakes; Applications up, Rates down

    pipeline-press

    rob-chrisman-daily

MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood. Speaking of neighborhoods, in signs of a rebound from very low levels, according to the MBAA, commercial and multifamily mortgage loan originations in the fourth quarter of 2009 were 12% higher than they were during the same period last year and 15% higher than during the third quarter of 2009. Loans for hotels were up 105%, retail loans were up 101%, industrial property loans were up 59%, but multifamily loans were down 8%.

Who are the big commercial servicing companies out there? At the end of 2009, Wells Fargo topped the charts with about $475 billion in U.S. master and primary servicing volume. Next were PNC Real Estate/Midland, Berkadia Commercial Mortgage, Bank of America, KeyBank Real Estate Capital, and GEMSA Loan Services. (A primary servicer is generally responsible for collecting loan payments from borrowers, performing property inspections and other property-related activities. A master servicer typically serves in a fiduciary capacity and is generally responsible for collecting cash and data from primary servicers and then providing that cash and data, through trustees, to investors, per the MBAA.)

GMAC, however, plans to cut over 550 jobs and close three offices in an effort to cut costs. Bloomberg reported that GMAC will cut over 300 positions at Res Cap’s offices in California (DiTech) and North Carolina, according to a spokeswoman. And auto loan servicing offices in NC and Tennessee will close, eliminating another 200+ jobs.

If your lock desk was busier last week, join the crowd. Applications rose 21% from the week before, according to MBAA stats, heading back to volumes similar to mid-December. Is everyone, whoever is left, trying to jump on the refi wagon (refi rocket?) before rates go up? Maybe – apps to refi were up over 26%. Purchases were up over 10%. And the four-week moving average, to catch the trend, showed apps up over 7%. And at this weekend’s Super Bowl party you can tell folks that refi’s still make up 69% of applications.

What is the American Securitization Forum? Darned if I know, exactly, but they were meeting in Washington DC and came out with a statement conjecturing that non-agency product (a $1.2 trillion market 4-5 years ago, $25 billion in ‘08 and $44 billion in ‘09) may start to be securitized again later this year. The reason? There’s more talk about it this year than last! Right now, however, jumbo loan production is pretty small, and profit margins are pretty slim since jumbo rates aren’t all that much higher than agency rates. (I have an idea! Let’s split the pools into tranches, and then have Wall Street work with the rating agencies… oh, never mind, I guess we tried that.) As I mentioned yesterday, banks are holding onto this product, but if other buyers materialize and the loans can be sold at profits, things could loosen up. Whole loan packages and syndications of interests in pools of loans may be steps in the right direction.

  • Turn Your USB Printer Wireless with a Print Server

Your home may be set up for wireless internet, streaming, and file sharing, but try telling your printer that. If you’re stuck lugging your laptop to a USB connection, a wireless print server may be a worthy purchase.

The ever-helpful Digital Inspiration blog lines up three of the most likely suspects available for purchase, costing between $60-$80. You can often find them cheaper, and slightly used, and some models, like the Netgear WGPS606, can also serve as a wired router for other non-wireless devices.

Why would you plunk down more than three Andrew Jacksons on a print server, when printers with built-in wireless will probably be $50 in a year or two? Digital Inspiration has a few suggestions:

    • If your current printer is relatively new and you paid more than $100 for it, then it may be more economical for you to simply purchase a wireless print server instead of purchasing an entirely new printer with the same features.
    • If a wireless printer in not available in your area, you can buy a regular USB based wired printer and get someone to ship you a wireless print server. This would incur less shipping costs than ordering a wireless printer.
    • Some wireless print servers can be used as wireless routers. If you do not have a wireless router at your place, you can opt for a wireless print server as it will not only turn your printer wireless but you also get to setup a wireless home network.

Now here’s the real question. Have you found a wireless print server with more features or better functionality than what’s posted at the link? Found another, cheaper solution to the last wire-required device in your house? Tell us all about it in the comments.

  • Vancouver Olympic Village Features 3.5-acres of Green Roof

This month, 2,800 athletes will move into Vancouver’s Olympic Village, a $1 billion LEED Gold facility which also features more than 3.5-acres of green roofs, writes The Vancouver Sun. The roofs of more than half of the village’s 22 buildings are covered in sedum, a plant species commonly used on green roofs because of their ability to absorb heat and CO2

Peter Kreuk, International ASLA, principal at Durante-Kruek and lead landscape architect on the project, told The Vancouver Sun the sedums used for the green roofs were grown in long mats and then rolled-out like turf over 7.5 cm (3 inches) of roof soil. Kreuk said: “Sedums are super drought tolerant plants. You could grow them on a rock, they are that tough. They should do very well in this location.” The roofs will also features designs: “In the middle of the roofs, the outline of Olympic athletes in motion doing their sport (skiing, curling, hockey, luge and skating) have been etched out of contrasting red sedums.”

The village’s designers made the roofs activity areas and integral to the overal design. Other roofs will contain garden spaces with “raised concrete beds” that will be used for growing herbs and vegetables. “Some of these areas also have tool sheds, potting tables, cold frames and stylish metal bins for composting.” Additionally, there are numerous green social spaces including patios, decks, and courtyard gardens.

Kreuk described the outdoor spaces: “We tried to design these areas as if they were someone’s private backyard. And what do you do in your backyard? Well, you have a place to sit and have dinner. You have a space growing things. And you need a place for children to play. We tried to make sure all the garden areas could be used in this way. We didn’t want them to have just one single function. I think they are all nicely scaled spaces.”

There was a focus on using water-efficient systems in an integrated site design. Rainwater will be captured and stored in underground cisterns. The rainwater will then be used to flush toilets, and, in summer, will be pumped up to irrigate the green roofs, “not that they will need much irrigating since all the plant material was specifically chosen to be drought tolerant and require minimal maintenance.” Other rainfall will be channeled through storm drains out to a meandering stream and will be “emptied after being filtered through detoxifying aquatic plants into False Creek.”

  • Witness testifies about alleged Peterson threats

Yet another witness at a pretrial hearing for ex-police officer Drew Peterson says she contacted authorities to say Peterson might have killed his third wife.

But she claims they never responded.

Kathleen Savio’s body was found in her bathtub in 2004.

When Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, disappeared in 2007, Savio’s body was exhumed and her death ruled a homicide.

Kristin Anderson lived in Savio’s basement in 2003 while her house was being built.

She told Wednesday’s hearing that Savio described Peterson — dressed all in black — once putting a knife to her throat and threatening to kill her. Earlier witnesses described the same alleged attack.

After Savio’s death, Anderson called investigators. But she says they never came to interview her or called her back.

Peterson has pleaded not guilty in Savio’s death.

If you were one of the thousands of fans who surfed over to Virgin Racing’s website the other day expecting to watch the live reveal of the team’s very first Formula One car, you were likely disappointed. Technical glitches prevented the webcast from going live on schedule, but we’ll chalk the silicon snafu up to opening night jitters. That’s understandable, though, because Virgin Racing is one of several new teams that started from scratch this year to join the F1 grid.

After flirting with Brawn GP sponsorship last season, Richard Branson’s Virgin group took over the start-up team previously known as Manor Motorsport. Powered by Cosworth, former Toyota F1 driver Timo Glock will team up with rookie Lucas di Grassi, who finished behind Glock in the 2007 GP2 Series.

Webcast aside, the Virgin VR-01 is a technological achievement in its own right. It’s the first F1 car designed entirely on computer – using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) processors – with no models built for wind tunnel aerodynamic testing. The striking car – in red and black with a tribal-style tattoo design – is heading to Silverstone for its first shakedown before joining the next group test at Jerez. Hopefully the webcast will be their only glitch in taking on the established teams (and the other newcomers) in what’s shaping up to be the most exciting F1 season in decades.
