• The Never-Ending Barack Obama Presidential Campaign

President Barack Obama speaking during his State Of The Union Address:

“What frustrates the American people is a Washington where every day is Election Day. We can’t wage a perpetual campaign.”

Sounds like a call for the end to partisan politics.
Perhaps brought on by Scott Brown’s recent victory in Massachusetts, which to anyone besides the most egotistical man to ever occupy the White House, is that the Republicans, nor the Democrats for that matter, are not really currently running a political campaign.

The American people are running a political campaign.

They are campaigning for conservatives, and against liberals, as a means to voicing their opposition to the Obama administration’s never ending push to ram healthcare “reform” down our throats, in spite of overwhelming public opposition to Obamacare.

  • Pretty quiet out there with mortgage prices, News from Fannie, Wells, Horton, MetLife; Bet against Phil!

    pipeline-press

    rob-chrisman-daily

I thought that I knew what a bank was, until those clever folks at the internet gave me something else to contemplate.

    http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Banker

Happy Groundhog Day. Few offices outside of Punxsutawney, PA use this as a holiday, whereby since 1887 if the groundhog (Punxsutawney Phil) sees his shadow we have six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, we will have an early spring. (Never to be outdone, the Great State of Texas chose its state mammal, an armadillo, to predict the weather for their first Armadillo Day.) The National Climatic Data Center reports that Phil’s predictions have been correct only 39% of the time. Worse than a coin toss!

Do we really need, in the United States, a return to more lenient credit? Self-employed borrowers aside, probably not, as many believe that it helped contribute to the credit issues we have now. Yet the press makes a big deal out of banks in the United States not loosening the flow of credit to consumers and businesses. It is truly a “supply and demand thing”, the credit markets are, and a recent report by the Federal Reserve shows banks aren’t tightening credit standards as much as they were a year or two ago, but they haven’t yet loosened the flow of credit to consumers or businesses. “The net percentage of banks that were tightening standards was close to zero but positive for most types of loans,” the Fed said in its quarterly survey of senior loan officers at 55 U.S. banks and 23 foreign banks doing business in the country. In the January survey, most banks reported that demand for most types of loans is still weakening further, the Fed reported.

For prime mortgages, 17.0% of banks reported tighter lending standards, down versus 21.5% reporting the same last quarter. Non-traditional mortgages were worse, and had a higher amount of tightening with 29% of banks tightening standards, and 27% of banks are continuing to tighten lending standards for commercial real estate.

It appears that the folks at Fannie Mae appreciate the work that Freddie Mac has done on its Imminent Default Indicator (IDI) statistical model. (The IDI predicts the likelihood of default or serious delinquency for mortgage loans that are less than 60 days past due.) Fannie announced the introduction of the use of IDI through Fannie Mae’s HomeSaver Solutions Network (HSSN). Their HSSN requires the use of verified income documentation before entering the borrower into a trial period plan, and Fannie “is changing the requirement for the imminent default screen to require an imminent default evaluation for all borrowers that are either current or in default but less than 60 days delinquent. This policy change achieves consistency in the treatment of Fannie Mae loans with the treatment of non-GSE loans under the Treasury Department’s Supplemental Directive 09-01.” This will be effective March 1 for servicers of conventional mortgage loans held in Fannie Mae’s portfolio that are part of an MBS pool. “Fannie Mae servicers who are required to use IDI by March 1, 2010 by other investors must implement the use of IDI for mortgage loans owned or securitized by Fannie Mae on the same date. All other servicers must implement the use of IDI as soon as possible but no later than June 1, 2010.”

  • Apple co-founder says Toyota acceleration issue related to software glitch, not pedal

Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple Computer and an owner of many Toyota Prius hybrid models said at a conference in San Francisco that Toyota’s unintended acceleration issues are related to a software glitch and not a bad accelerator pedal.

“I have many models of Prius that got recalled, but I have a new model that didn’t get recalled,” Wozniak said. “The new model has an accelerator that goes wild but only under certain conditions of cruise control. And I can repeat it over and over and over again safely.”

Wozniak said that he has been trying to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Toyota for three months but was unable to get anyone to test a software-related issue.

Toyota spokesman John Hanson said that Toyota has found no evidence of an electronic or software problem.

  • Five dogs attack family walking in Fontana

A pack of five escaped dogs attacked a mother and her four young children in Fontana, mauling three of the siblings and leaving the youngest in critical condition.

The mother had been walking with four of her six children along a path near Arrow Boulevard and Citrus Avenue shortly before 5 p.m. Monday, when the pack comprised of a mastiff, a pit bull terrier and three other large dogs escaped from a back yard by digging a hole under the fence, said Sgt. Jeff Decker of the Fontana Police Department.

One of the dogs pulled the youngest, a 5-year-old girl, out of her mother’s grasp and shook her violently. The child, listed in critical condition at a hospital, suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung, serious bites and possible internal injuries. She also needed a ventilator to breathe.

“The mother believed one of her children was so badly mauled that she might be dead,” Decker said.

The girl’s older brother, who is 6 or 7 year old, was hospitalized for serious bite wounds on his leg. Another girl, whose age was unknown, was also treated for injuries to her arms and legs. The eldest, an 8-year-old boy, was the only child unharmed.

Some teenagers tried to get the dogs off the family by throwing rocks, Decker said. Police contacted the owners, who expressed concern at what had happened and said the dogs had not been trained for any type of sport or activity, Decker said.

Police chased down the dogs and shot the pit bull terrier. The others were impounded at the San Bernardino County Animal Shelter.

Grace and pace and something else – click above for high-res image gallery

Grace and pace. One cannot properly talk Jaguar without mentioning the brand’s calling car. For the last 75 years those two attributes have separated Jag from the rest of the pack. After all, not only did the E-Type look that good, but when is debuted in 1961 few cars could match its speed. Those that could, well, they sure didn’t look like a Jaguar.

Lately however, the shag-you-are song hasn’t exactly remained the same. Don’t get us wrong, the brand’s adherence to V8s and superchargers has largely ensured the pace part of the equation has been there, but grace… not so much. Or, in the case of the Europe-only diesel X-type Estate (read: station wagon), both terms were rudely, death knellingly absent.

To mark the occasion of their 75th anniversary Jaguar is claiming the old mojo is back. As something more than casual observers of the auto industry, we can assure you that they aren’t far off. Five seconds into any journey featuring the brand’s new 5.0-liter supercharged V8 will make a believer out of anyone. Moreover, the few fleeting minutes we’ve spent inside the new XJ’s cockpit have made us born again. It might very well be the most graceful interior on planet earth. Now if they could just do something about the XK’s snout… Make the jump to check out Jaguar’s 75th Anniversary press release, and enjoy the gallery-it’s superb.

  • Honda Accord dethrones Toyota Camry as best-selling mid-size sedan in Jan.

By now you’re probably getting annoyed with all the Toyota recall news, but we can’t help it – it’s just so fascinating. Continuing with the pedal recall fiasco, Toyota today found itself in a deeper hole after the Honda Accord dethroned the Toyota Camry as the best-selling mid-size sedan in January.

Due to sales stoppage, Toyota Camry sales fell 24 percent to 15,792 units, coming in behind the Honda Accord, which was up 14.7 percent with 19,022 units sold (20,759 including the Accord Crosstour). Nissan also sold more Altimas with a total 18,636 units sold for an increase of 31.8 percent.

The Chevrolet Malibu had an outstanding January with an increase of 76.5 percent for a total of 16,439 units sold.

Whether or not the Toyota Camry will finally be dethroned for the full year remains to be seen.

  • Bats in the Bedroom: Canadians Make a Policy Change

cat-batID doctors know all too well the panicky call — usually from a terrified friend, family member, or colleague, or possibly the emergency room or primary care doc — about finding a bat in the house.

    Usually in the bedroom.

(In one memorable case, it was the house cat’s leaping in the air to try and catch the bat that woke up the sleeping couple. Each missed pounce led to a loud “thud” as the cat fell to the ground.)

The concern, of course, is bat-related rabies, which I’ve written about before, mostly at the prompting of a fine pair of papers (summarized here and here) published over the past few years by a Canadian group. They have painstakingly documented just how rare human rabies arises from “stealth” bat exposure in the house.

For example, number of such situations that would need rabies vaccination to prevent one case? 2,668,000.

Well Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) has read these papers too, and has decided to stop recommending rabies immunization for bats-in-house-but-no-exposure cases:

Researchers have since reviewed this approach and determined that when there is no obvious contact with a bat, the risk of rabies is extremely rare. Furthermore, there are considerable resource implications to implementing this strategy. Based on the review, which is outlined below, NACI is now recommending intervention only when both of the following conditions apply: 1) There has been direct contact with a bat; and 2) A bite, scratch, or salive exposure into a wound or mucous membrane cannot be ruled out

According to this nice summary — and hat tip to the author for notifying me of policy change in Canada — it doesn’t sound like the US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is ready to make the change quite yet.

But maybe in the next revision of these guidelines?

  • Man suspected of kidnapping, molesting 4 girls in Mid-City held on $4-million bail

A two-year manhunt for a man who kidnapped and molested four girls in the Mid-City neighborhood of Los Angeles has ended in the arrest of a 41-year-old Hollywood man, police officials said Tuesday.

Daniel Merino was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping for sexual assault after detectives scoured thousands of license plates recorded by the Los Angeles Police Department’s new license plate-reading vehicles. Through that search, they found a match to a car that possibly belonged to the suspect.

Detectives from the robbery-homicide division staked out the block where the car was located in 600 block of North Kingsley Drive.
On Jan. 29, they spotted Merino getting into the car and driving into a parking garage.

Eight hours later, detectives arrested him and found evidence that they said connected him to the four attacks. He is being held on $4-million bail.

Pint-sized reality personality Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi may be famous for grinding on guys in wifebeaters on the hit MTV show Jersey Shore — but when it comes to rumors of a Snookin’ For Love sex tape, the brunette guidette says the reports are anything but realistic.

“…..about my supposed ‘sex tape’…There are no nude pictures nor will there ever be. the tabloids just love snook gossip,” the 22-year-old former receptionist wrote on her Twitter page on Tuesday. “[I don’t know] where radar online comes up with their stories..weirdos,” she added.

  • Police identify suspects in wild car chase through Burbank, Glendale

Burbank police on Tuesday released the identities of three suspects accused of leading them on a wild chase that ended with one of them fleeing on foot into a Glendale mall garage.

The suspects — identified as Christina Tristan, 22, of Burbank; Joseph Hernandez, 18, of Burbank; and Alexander Moya, 19, of Los Angeles — were booked on suspicion of robbery and felony for evading arrest.

They are scheduled to appear for arraignment Wednesday in Burbank Superior Court and are being held on $50,000 to $150,000 bail.

The trio are accused of robbing the Glen-Mar liquor store in the 2000 block of Glenoaks Avenue in Burbank shortly before 11 a.m. Monday and leading police on a chase on residential streets and freeways that ended when the brown Toyota Corolla driven by Tristan slammed into a parked car.

Tristan and Hernandez were immediately arrested at the scene, according to Burbank police Sgt. Robert Quesada.

It was Moya, armed with a handgun, who eluded the tackle of one officer and then slid across the hood of a patrol vehicle to get away from another officer, Quesada said. He then sprinted down the street, pulling away from pursuing officers. He ran into the Americana at Brand mall and hid in a parking garage for about two hours before he was apprehended by police.

Quesada said the suspects might be connected to a series of robberies in the city over a two-week period.

  • Report: GM gunning for 1M Chevrolet sales in Europe by 2015

2011 Chevrolet Cruze – click above for high-res image gallery

Back in 2005, General Motors’ Chevrolet brand wasn’t much of a player in Europe. With the help of some re-badged Daewoo models and a bit of marketing effort, the Bowtie doubled its sales volume by 2008. That’s no small feat in any market, much less a region as cutthroat competitive as Europe. The General’s meat-and-potatoes marque even held relatively steady in 2009, as sales dropped 14 percent in the region mainly because of a 56 percent drop in sales in recession-plagued Russia. In Western Europe, Chevrolet saw a 7.8 percent increase in sales for the year, buoyed by various cash-for-clunkers programs in countries like France and the UK.

But while sales of 425,000 vehicles in a down year sounds like a nice story for Chevrolet, The General wants a lot more in the years ahead. Wards Automotive is reporting that GM is looking to move one million Chevy vehicles in Europe by 2015, more than doubling the volume of Bowtie branded sales in a mere six years. The General will reportedly stretch to achieve this goal by cutting down on re-badged Daewoo models and instead offering more global Chevy vehicles like the Volt, Spark, Cruze, Aveo and Orlando.

Some critics wonder if Chevrolet’s success is coming at the expense of Opel. After all, while Chevy sales increased by nearly eight percent, Opel’s fortunes dropped by nearly six percent. Not so, says Chevrolet Europe President Wayne Brannon. Brannon told Wards that the company’s marketing data shows that Opel shoppers rarely cross the isle and shop Chevy.

Will the EuroGeneral reach its lofty goal of one million sales in 2015? We have no idea, but it seems like every automaker has some lofty sales goal for 2015, and we’re thinking at least a few are destined for disappointment.

  • Merriam Webster Dictionary Pulled From Elementary School For Defining Oral Sex; Guess What All The Students Just Found Out About?

Pickle Monger points us to yet another story of overreaction that will clearly backfire in a misguided attempt to “protect the children!” Apparently a parent of a student at Oak Meadows Elementary school in Riverside, California got very upset when she discovered that the schools had copies of the collegiate level Merriam-Websters Dictionary which (gasp!) contained a definition of the phrase “oral sex.” Because of that the dictionary was removed from classrooms and a committee was formed to “investigate.” Thankfully, the committee concluded that the original dictionary was fine and should be returned to the classroom, but that an alternative dictionary will be provided as well.

Of course, many other parents at the school pointed out how ridiculous it was that the dictionaries were removed in the first place. It’s not as if kids will never hear a phrase like that and seek out an answer somewhere. Would parents really prefer that the kids go to Google and do a search on “oral sex,” or go to a dictionary instead? Furthermore, this is a definite “Streisand Effect” situation. Now that this story has made the press, you have to imagine that a significantly higher number of elementary school students at Oak Meadows have now heard the term “oral sex” and figured out what it meant.

  • Stating the obvious: Toyota’s recall woes to hurt sales and market share

Toyota’s massive recall of 2.3 million vehicles and a sales halt of its best-selling models will inevitably hurt the automakers expected increase in sales and the overall U.S. auto sale increase for January. Analysts say that Toyota is expected to report a sharp drop in sales after a halt in production and sales of its popular vehicles last week.

Industry analysts also expect Toyota’s results in market share to drop compared to U.S. rivals including General Motors and Ford Motor Company.

“Frankly, I think this is going to impact their entire quarter,” said IHS Global Insight analyst Aaron Bragman. “It means opportunity for the rest of the industry. Toyota is wounded and rivals are going to go after it as much as they can.”

  • KENYA: Victory for Anti-Abortion Lobby

By Susan Anyangu-Amu NAIROBI, Feb 2 (IPS) The threat by influential Christian leaders to mobilise a vote against Kenya's draft constitution if it does not explicitly prevent any expansion of abortion rights appears to have succeeded.

The draft assembled by a Committee of Experts for consideration by the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) contained no specific reference to abortion, but the National Council of Churches (NCCK) and the Catholic Church were up in arms about a phrase stating that "everyone has a right to life" while failing to define where life begins and ends.

Canon Peter Karanja of the NCCK told IPS, "Life is sacrosanct. The definition of life must be stipulated in the supreme law of the land, the Constitution. Life must be defined as starting at conception and ending at natural death."

The parliamentary committee has completed deliberations on the draft, and decided to define life as beginning at conception.

Phrases guaranteeing everyone the right to health care (including reproductive health care) and stating that no one may be refused emergency medical treatment have been deleted; added is a phrase ruling out abortion "unless in the opinion of a registered medical practitioner the life of the mother is in danger".

The changes have raised an uproar, with professional associations of medical practitioners saying it will have negative effects on Kenya's attempt to reduce maternal deaths.

"As health care providers, we are familiar with both the human impact of unsafe abortion and the public health burden it represents. Including prohibition against abortion in the constitution and defining life as beginning at conception will fail to prevent incidences of abortion," says Dr Otieno Nyunya, chairman of the reproductive health committee of the Kenya Medical Association.

Grace Maingi-Kimani, the acting executive director of Federation of Women Lawyers Kenya (FIDA), says the move by the PSC is disheartening and will serve to limit access to choice for women and young girls who are raped and end up pregnant.

"The PSC was not thinking about the hundreds of women who were raped during the post-election violence and were forced to have children sired by men who violated them and possibly killed their husbands. The PSC was not thinking of young girls who are abused by their teachers and forced to cut short their education due to unwanted pregnancies," Kimani says.

"It is the poor women and teenage girls who die at the hands of quacks," says Professor Joseph Karanja, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Nairobi.

He says wealthy, well-educated women are able to find safe ways to terminate pregnancies; ignoring international commitments Kenya has made guaranteeing the right to health, he charges, the PSC, has created a platform that puts the most vulnerable at still greater risk.

On its part, the Church is happy with the prohibition of abortion and definition of life as beginning at conception, and has again warned it will reject anything less.

"We should not victimise the innocent unborn children, who do not have a say in this matter. Even in the case of rape and incest, the life in the womb of the woman is innocent," says Father Paulino Wondo of the Holy Trinity Catholic Mission in the Nairobi slum of Kariobangi.

Members of the Kenya Medical Association, FIDA, Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society, Family Health Options Kenya and the National Nurses Association of Kenya, have written a protest note to the PSC, the Committee of Experts and Parliament, calling for the controversial phrases to be reviewed.

Currently, abortion is permitted in Kenya only to save the life of the mother. Despite this, every year large numbers of women seek assistance to terminate pregnancies wherever they can find it.

Dr Joachim Osur, an advisor with reproductive health rights organisation IPAS – a member of the RHRA – argues that opponents of expanded abortion rights in Kenya have their heads buried in the sand.

"Despite termination of pregnancy being restricted in Kenya, induced abortions remain common. In Kenya it is estimated that 300,000 spontaneous and induced abortions occur annually, about 29 abortions for every 100 live births," says Osur.

"Unsafe abortions contribute a significant margin to the maternal deaths in this country at 30 percent. It is estimated that 2,000 women die annually from unsafe abortions."

Dr Otieno Nyunya, chairman reproductive health committee of the Kenya Medical Association says research done by his association alongside IPAS and FIDA in 2004 found 316,560 spontaneous and induced abortions occurred that year.

Nearly 21,000 women are admitted each year to Kenya’s public hospitals for treatment of complications from incomplete abortions, either spontaneous or induced.

The study further shows that 800 unsafe abortions are performed every day and 2,600 women die from unsafe abortions in Kenya each year, representing 30 to 40 percent of Kenya's total maternal deaths, according to Kenya Obstetric and Gynaecological Society and Kenya Medical Association.

Nyunya says that 60 percent of the beds in the gynaecological ward at Kenyatta National Hospital, the largest referral hospital in East and Central Africa, are occupied by patients suffering from abortion complications.

He says a conservative estimate of the cost to the state for the management of these cases is approximately four million dollars a year.

The cost to women's lives is much higher.
