  • Apple forces Stanza to nix USB book sharing

Those who enjoy USB book sharing their ePub and eReader files in the current version of Stanza [iTunes link] will want to avoid the 2.1 version of the software, currently being distributed in the App Store. The update notes reveal that Apple apparently ordered Lexcycle to remove the USB sharing ability. Unfortunately, Lexcycle is forbidden from explaining why they were told to remove the feature.

To me — and this is pure speculation — this is Apple’s equivalent of giving Amazon the finger. Amazon acquired Lexcycle back in 2009, and that this could be part of a series of moves by Apple to drive people toward the iPad and the upcoming iBooks software. I wouldn’t be too surprised if Apple found a way to ban the wonderful Kindle app [iTunes link] from the App Store at some point in the future. Is Apple becoming the next Tammany Hall with Steve Jobs its “Boss” Tweed?

For now, to avoid losing USB sharing, remember not to do a bulk upgrade of your apps and avoid any future Stanza updates.

  • Nanopool’s spray-on liquid glass could keep bacteria, water off of pretty much anything

You know, we’re beginning to wonder exactly what’s genuine anymore. Our foods are being built in laboratories, our glass panes are being unwillingly converted to touch panels, and now, exposed objects don’t even have to get grimy over the course of time. It’s a travesty, we say. All disappointing rants aside, we have to confess that we’re actually enthused about a newly developed spray-on silicon dioxide solution that promises to protect just about any surface from water, bacteria, dirt and UV radiation. The so-called “liquid glass” is said to be completely harmless to the environment, and creator Nanopool hopes that it can be used eventually on car coatings, clothing and even the nose cones of high-speed trains. Here’s hoping it comes in a spray can — our decade-old keyboard and mouse could probably use a coat of this.

    [Thanks, Pierre]

  • Rupert Murdoch: Amazon now ‘willing to renegotiate’ e-book prices

You didn’t think the price hike would stop at Macmillan, did you? In today’s News Corp. earnings call, chairman Rupert Murdoch gave indication that his HarperCollins would also soon be changing its e-book prices with Amazon. As relayed by All Things D, the mogul has been unhappy with the $9.99 tier, that Apple’s iBookstore “does allow some flexibility and higher prices,” and here’s the kicker: “And now Amazon is willing to sit down with us again and renegotiate.” Nothing’s changed yet, but we gotta imagine it’s only a matter of time — not just with HarperCollins, but probably all “big six” publishers before too long.

  • 5 Simple Twitter Listening Tips Every Marketer Should Know

listen_twittermarketing_0210.jpgDuring my career as a Web strategy consultant I’ve often had people ask me, “How do I do social media?” Unfortunately the answer isn’t simple. But the first step is the same as if you developing any other marketing strategy: know your market. To “know your market” in the old days you needed a $15,000 qualitative market research study that would then need to be quantified for the likes of senior management. The customer research effort was time consuming and expensive.

Luckily the Web offers many ways to gather information on a topic and the conversation around that particular topic or product, in real-time. In fact we are spoiled, even overwhelmed, with free listening tools.

    Sponsor

If you’re just starting out using the Web as a research and analysis tool to find out about your customers needs and wants and have never used a search service to do this, a great place to start is Twitter Search as it is instantly gratifying! However, fair warning: these tools are addictive. If you are ready to take the plunge, read on.

Search Your Product, Service or Topic Using Twitter Search

Most of us know how to use Twitter to follow, tweet, retweet, @reply and direct message our friends and colleagues. However, not many of us employ Twitter as a research tool. Here is how:

    1. Go to search.twitter.com
    2. Type in keywords in relation to your product, service or topic. For example: ReadWriteWeb, RWW, @RWW, #RWW.
    3. Read the conversation.

Yes, it really is that easy to locate people that are talking about your product or market of interest. These tweets can be really very positive, but also so revealing it hurts. But don’t take them personally, take action and you will be rewarded.

    listen_twittermarketing3_0210.jpg

    Use Hashtags

You may see that people are talking about a topic using a particular hashtag. That’s twitter-speak for a pound sign followed by a word. Twitters use them to identify tweets that have a similar topic. For example, when I search for RWW on Twitter search, it gives me results for all the people that have tweeted using #RWW.

Where do hashtags come from? People and companies just make them up so they can easily follow particular conversations. Hashtags are basically a hack for the search system to easily find everything on a particular subject. I am not sure if a ReadWriteWeb staff member was the first person to use the #RWW hashtag, but I know it is out there and being used, so it is one of the things I search for when listening to what people are saying.

Here’s a real-world example of how hashtags can be used to instantly identify and solve problems. We just launched the ReadWriteWeb iPhone Application . Within minutes of tweeting about the application and sharing the download link, we were able to identify a few bugs right off the bat that our developer Nicolas Toopia was able to resolve.

Progressing to a Desktop Application For Market Monitoring

Once you are comfortable searching for your product or service, you may want to progress to monitoring your market using a desktop Twitter application. Desktop applications make it easier to monitor your product as you can create many custom filtered conversation streams and watch them all at once, as opposed to watching one stream at a time on twitter.com. For example I use TweetDeck. It allows me to easily set up several streams that I want to monitor. Other desktop clients like Seesmic Desktop and PeopleBrowsr offer similar options.

    listen_twittermarketing2_0210.jpg

Create Custom Filtered Views of the Conversation

Setting up canned searches: You can set up a canned search so you can watch the ongoing stream of conversation around your product or service. Use the search function of your desktop client and search for your favorite search terms. TweetDeck, for instance, immediately sets up a conversation stream in a column for you to view. In one stream I have created a canned search for @RWW. This allows me to continuously watch what people are saying about ReadWriteWeb, what they are tweeting and retweeting and answer any questions or issues someone may have.

Setting up groups: I have also set up a group list of the RWW team by simply selecting their @names from a list so I can see only what the RWW team is saying on Twitter. This is another function that sits at the very top of the screen in Tweetdeck. You can also follow Twitter Lists in TweetDeck.

Building Community and Learning from the Twittersphere

The true power of Twitter is realized when you start to use search, groups and conversation tools to build community, networks and identify expertise around your product, service or learn about a particular topic of interest. Let’s say I am really interested in dressage riding (which I am). I go to search.twitter.com and use keywords to find people that are talking about dressage, or I go to a list service like Listorious. I may follow both the list someone has created on Listorious, as well as create my own lists and perhaps a canned search for various words in my Twitter client. Tracking all of these conversations, I can very quickly get up to speed on top dressage tweeters. When I am feeling brave, I can engage in the conversation. If I am active enough, I will slowly build relationships and useful networks, possibly around the globe.

    Warning: These services are addictive!

Once you become a Twitter addict, and you get used to customer and market information in real-time, you will find it very difficult to go back to your old ways of marketing. In the future, I’ll discuss how to use more listening and analysis tools such as notification tools. However, once you get started and realize how easy all of this listening, information gathering and engagement is, I have no doubt you will start searching for and discovering new tools on your own.

  • Never Mind the Valley: Here’s Bangalore

Known as the “Silicon Valley of India,” Bangalore, the capital of the Indian state of Kamataka, is known globally as a center of information technology, housing international giants in the hardware and software industries. The city’s first major step towards its IT reputation began in the late 1970s with the formation the Electronics City cluster, a 332 acre industrial park home to some of the biggest names in IT.

    Sponsor

RWW’s Never Mind the Valley series:

Among these are international companies like 3M, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard and Siemens, as well as Indian corporations like Infosys Technologies Limited, and Wipro. Infosys, a business software solutions and outsourcing provider featured heavily in Thomas Friedman’s book The World Is Flat, is one of India’s largest IT companies with over 100,000 employees and $4 billion in revenue in 2009.

Other business clusters have since taken root in Bangalore, including the Whitefield cluster, which formed from the construction of the International Technology Park Bengaluru in 1994. The six building, 2 million square foot region houses offices for Accenture, Symbian, Dell, IBM, Intel and Oracle among others. Other clusters such as the Inner Ring Road cluster, and the Bellandur Outer Ring Road cluster include companies like Microsoft, Yahoo, McAfee, Target, Lenovo, Cisco, Nokia and Honeywell.

Bangalore, like Silicon Valley, saw a rapid increase in startups around the turn of the century with the dot-com boom, spawning companies like Live Documents, Minglebox and Vaakya Technologies. Recently, however, startups in the region have fallen victim to hesitation from cautious investors. Deepti Chaudhary of the Indian business news site Livemint says that startups across India are struggling despite help from the nearly 40 Indian incubators.

“It’s an act of both desperation and instinct,” writes Chaudhary. “The country’s most prominent incubators are raising early-stage funds so their fledgling firms have the money they need to grow… VC firms, for reasons ranging from poor mentoring to a lack of quality entrepreneurs emerging from the system, seem to have lost faith in incubated companies.”

Chaudhary points out that Ojas Venture Partners, an Indian early-stage venture capital firm backed by one of Infosys’ co-founders, has failed to invest in a incubator-bred startup since 2008. Another large VC firm, IDG Ventures, last invested in an incubated startup in 2007. Other India-centric and Bangalore-based VC firms include Artiman Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Helion Venture Partners and Nexus Venture Partners.

Another obstacle in the way of entrepreneurs across India is the dichotomy presented by cities like Bangalore and the smaller villages nearby. Those in the larger cities like Bangalore and Mumbai have a greater opportunity to find venture funding due to the numerous investors, organizations and events. Entrepreneurs in smaller villages, where the Internet access is less readily available, are additionally hampered by a lack of access to business resources.

It is also more difficult for entrepreneurs from smaller regions to focus on large market solutions, the kinds of solutions venture firms look to invest in. However, according to the news agency Press Trust of India (PTI), Infosys’ Narayana Murthy recently encouraged startups to focus on smaller niche markets. PTI explains that “new start-ups have to demonstrate that the ideas which they are bringing to the table are not ideas which the big companies are working on.”

Despite these struggles, Bangalore has become a hub for information technology, research and development and an excellent incubator for Indian startups. With the help of events like Startup City, Barcamp Bangalore and Startup Saturday Bangalore, the city’s potential for innovation and entrepreneurship is quickly expanding.

Much like London, Bangalore will continue to grow as more 2nd and 3rd generation entrepreneurs begin providing their own funding to the area’s startups. The area’s universities will provide the technical expertise and entrepreneurship needed for these companies, and the wide variety of businesses located in the city will be eager to snatch up the best of them.

  • McLaren MP4-12C GTR rendered

McLaren MP4-12C GTR – Click above for high-res image gallery

When McLaren first announced its all-new road car, the MP4-12C, no mention was made about a race version. That’s not to say one won’t be eventually built. After all, the McLaren F1 was intended to be purely a road car, but we all know how that story ends. As of right now, though, the MP4-12C is just for the street.

Enter Jon Sibal. He’s a talented digital artist who’s also got a thing for cars. Sibal has created “what the McLaren MP4-12C as a GTR variant might look like dressed in the iconic GULF livery.” The result is both amazingly realistic and stunningly beautiful, and it makes us desperately hope that McLaren will take the MP4-12C racing. Sibal also went on to create additional paint schemes that pay homage to the original F1 GTR liveries. You can see them all in the gallery below, and be sure to visit Jon Sibal’s blog to see more of his work.

  • Dante’s Inferno DLC to Include Co-Op, Content Creation

Just as the game prepares to hit stores next week, a new trailer (above) for Dante’s Inferno has leaked, revealing information about upcoming downloadable content plans. Destructoid reports that the “Trials of St. Lucia” pack will include both a co-op mode and content creation. The trailer mentions that users can rate both the trials and user-created stages to rank the best creators out there. In addition, the DLC will add a co-op mode to defeat enemy waves. The pack is set to come out April 29, which is a surprisingly long time to wait for modes that are already being teased.

The video may have come from an illegally obtained copy of the game, and so the trailer wasn’t expected to last long before being removed. Then again, the trailer is still up as of now, and it’s generating some publicity. The marketing team for Inferno has made some usual choices before, so maybe this is just the latest result of their guerilla efforts. Either way, the information is out there, so let us know what you think of the content.

We recently got to sit down with Motohide Eshiro, the game’s producer, and talk about the title’s development, his history as an action game director, and few classic text adventures.

1UP: Mr. Eshiro, you’re the producer on Ace Attorney Investigations, but could you tell us a little more about your role in the game’s development?

Motohide Eshiro: I started as co-producer on the second and third Ace Attorney games, but this is my first time in the series as full producer. Mostly, I look over the overall product schedule and budget. I make sure everything’s coming in on time — things like that.

  • Ray LaHood: U.S. had to force Toyota into safety recall

United States Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said today that the recent Toyota recalls come by way of an ‘enormous effort,’ and that federal regulators are not done with their investigations.

“Since questions were first raised about possible safety defects, we have been pushing Toyota to take measures to protect consumers,” LaHood said in a statement. “While Toyota is taking responsible action now, it unfortunately took an enormous effort to get to this point.”

LaHood mentioned that had it not been for the governments urging, Toyota would not have issued the recall. Toyota is set to testify before Congress on two separate dates; Feb. 10 and Feb. 25.

Toyota has apparently had knowledge of the faulty accelerator pedal assemblies as early as March of 2007, and under went two redesigns before the recall. Toyota’s recall in November concerning floor mats trapping accelerator pedals against the floor also came only by way of the government urging them to do so. Safety advocates claim that the recent Toyota defects are linked to a minimum of 19 deaths.

  • Apple kills USB syncing for apps, but alternative is coming

USB app syncing is coming to an end for iPhone users, but it may not be the end of the world. Apple recently asked Lexcycle to remove USB syncing capabilities from its popular e-book reading app Stanza, prompting the ire of many users. While loss of the feature is upsetting, the good news is that Apple has an alternative planned for a future iPhone OS update.

TechCrunch noted the issue with Stanza earlier today, wondering if the request was an attempt to stifle competition in the e-book reader segment. The truth is actually far less sinister: apps with USB syncing were violating the iPhone developer agreement, and the company has been asking developers to ax similar features as far back as last November.

Apple doesn’t currently provide any API for enabling USB syncing, and apps are usually limited to accessing their own individual sandbox for file storage. To get around this, apps were using the iPhone’s Digital Camera Image Management (DCIM) folder and private APIs to facilitate syncing as well as sharing files between applications.

All digital cameras store its files inside a DCIM folder—check your camera’s memory card—and the iPhone stores all its photos and videos there too. It’s the only folder accessible to USB syncing applications on the desktop, and it’s how iPhoto, Image Capture, Picasa, and other apps can access the photos and videos on your iPhone. It’s also the only folder that apps can access, though typically it can only be done via APIs for choosing or saving images.

Though users of Stanza, PDF readers, numerous audio editors and sequencers, and other apps will be frustrated, the good news is that Apple has a mechanism planned to address both syncing and file sharing issues. The beta SDK for iPhone OS 3.2 has APIs for accessing an on-device shared storage folder, which will be mounted as a readable and writable disk when plugged in to a computer via USB.

iPhone OS 3.2 is currently intended for the iPad only, though. The iPhone will likely gain the file sharing feature as a 3.2 update when the iPad ships in late March, or perhaps later this summer when iPhone OS 4.0 is expected to be available.

  • Microsoft Office 2010 hits Release Candidate status

Redmond has provided a Release Candidate build of Microsoft Office 2010 to a select group of testers. “Microsoft made a release candidate available to members in the Technology Adoption Program (TAP),” a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed with Ars. “This is one of Microsoft’s planned milestones in the engineering process; however they do not have plans to make this new code set available broadly.”

Microsoft uses TAP to obtain real world customer feedback on its prerelease products from its partners. These partners have the opportunity to talk to the product engineering team, get help in deploying their Microsoft solutions, get early product education, and of course use feedback to influence the product during its development. The fact that Microsoft is not considering giving this build, or some RC version, to the public is a little worrying given that the company still has four months till Office 2010 is released. Granted, the final build will likely be compiled much sooner, but generally speaking, only providing a single public beta is uncharacteristic of the company. When we asked Microsoft about more public Office 2010 builds, the company refused to reveal anything. “We have nothing additional to share at this time,” the spokesperson told Ars.

The Office 2010 beta that Microsoft gave out to the public three months ago was build 14.0.4536.1000 and has already been downloaded over 2 million times. Since then, and even before then, there have been many leaks of other builds; the latest one we’ve seen is build 14.0.4734.1000, which leaked out only last week:

    Wzor.net

Office 2010 is the first release of the productivity suite that will come in 32-bit and 64-bit flavors and on one DVD no less. It is slated to be released in June 2010 with the same requirements as Office 2007 though under a different pricing scheme.

  • A bathtub with portholes, so you can look out – or in

You are now aware that bathtubs can have portholes. I was actually about to ask why we don’t have clear bathtubs (we do, in fact) and it occurred to me that, well, let’s be honest: that thing isn’t going to look clear for long. Soap, water, and our natural oils will do their work to make that large expanse of glass nearly opaque after a little while. But portholes? Easy enough to deal with.

What surprises me is that such a cool design is actually pretty reasonably priced. Well, maybe not reasonable, but certainly not extravagant. A tub will cost you €2700, or about $3760. I would have guessed about twice that. And just having portholes fitted to your existing tub is a paltry €550, or $770.

Okay, that’s actually pretty expensive, but it’s still kind of awesome.

  • Weekly Test-Drive: 2010 Cadillac CTS-V makes us love our job

Let’s take a break from all the recall news and introduce you to the latest ride in egmCarTech’s garage – the 2010 Cadillac CTS-V sedan. That’s right we’re test-driving the fastest sedan to circle the famous Nurburgring in Germany and we’re loving every second of it.

First Impressions: Forget first impressions, the 2010 Cadillac CTS-V sedan creates a lasting impression and makes you realize that Detroit is capable of some very amazing things. Power comes from 6.2L Supercharged V8 based on the LS9 V8 from the recently released Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1. The engine makes a neck-snapping 556-hp with a maximum torque of 551 lb-ft. Mated to a Tremec TR6060 6-speed manual or a Hydra-Matic 6L90 6-speed automatic, the 0-60 mph run is rated at 3.9 seconds (we’ve managed to achieve 4.2 so far).

For the first time in a long time, we have a car in our garage that gives us a punched in the stomach feeling and a feeling that we’ll get in trouble with the authorities.

  • Apple Posts Another Patch for Flickering on New iMac

For the second time in six weeks, Apple has offered a firmware download to address problems on its new iMac 27-inch liquid crystal display. A 294-kilobyte download from Apple’s web site entitled 27-inch iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 comes on the heels of a similar but much larger update in December that was 683 kilobytes.

While the first update was for the ATI Radeon HD 4670 and 4850 graphics cards, the latest release is for the display firmware, or closed control program.

    Complaint Forum

The fixes are in response to hundreds of complaints on Apple’s support page about flickering or discolored screens since the iMac went on sale in October.

“After several hours of continuous use with the brightness set between 6-8 bars (halfway), Intermittent screen flicker both horizontal and vertical occurred with the occasional black screen for a brief second,” wrote a U.K. user posting as AGPCard For Pm on Nov. 15. “The problem persisted and became more frequent, especially after waking from sleep.”

There have also been numerous video clips of malfunctioning iMacs on YouTube.

Apple hasn’t acknowledged discolored screens and the update does not address it. An electronics blog this week published what it said was an internal Apple memo instructing support staff not to “attempt to repair or replace at this time. Explain that slight color variability is normal for LCD displays and in general does not warrant replacement.”

Some units have also arrived with cracked screens, users said. Despite these problems, sales of the iMac, which starts at $1,199, continue at a brisk pace. Sales are expected to reach as high as 2.9 million this quarter, even as production delays have held back shipments.

  • Dick Durbin presses Apple on human rights in China

Technology relations with China and their human rights situation is turning into a hot-button issue lately, especially given Google’s recent troubles with that country. Still, Apple has always spoken out strongly in favor human rights, so hopefully a little bit of spotlight from queries like Durbin’s will ensure that their actions match up.
