  • Alain Prost Drives Dacia Duster to Silver in the Trophee Andros

Saturday, January 31 2010, the last race of the 2009/10 Trophee Andros took place at the Super Besse French ski resort. Due to steering problems at his Dacia Duster, Alain Prost didn’t manage to secure a place on the podium during the race, thus obtaining second place overall in the series.

However, the ex-F1 driver and the whole Dacia Team are very satisfied with the general result, as this was the Duster’s (and Dacia’s) first season ever. The staff is especially pleased with the three wins… (read more)

  • Ha’ikū Stairs

    Hawaii, US | Intriguing Environs

The Ha’ikū Stairs, aptly nicknamed the Stairway to Heaven, is a steep climb on the island of Oʻahu that seems to disappear into the sky itself.

The trail got its start as a simple wooden latter attached to the cliff. It was installed during WWII to facilitate the building of giant antenna cables between the cliffs above Haʻikū Valley. These, along with a building at the peak, could transmit signals that could reach submarines as far away as Tokyo Bay, even to submarines submerged underwater.

In the 1950s, the wooden stairs were replaced by metal steps and ramps; with counts numbering 3,922 steps. The trail was officially closed in 1987, but many hikers continue to ignore the “No Trespassing” signs and make the climb for the awe-inspiring view at the top.

  • Report: NHTSA says it has “no reason to challenge” Toyota throttle fix

Toyota’s recalled pedal assembly close-up – Click above for high-res image gallery

That’s right, more ThrottleGate! Even though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) doesn’t have to approve Toyota’s solution to fix its recalled gas pedals, the NHTSA could offer up an objection. 2.3 million Toyota cars and trucks have been affected by the pedal recall in the U.S., with other pedals being recalled in other cars around the world.

Since Toyota’s remedy is not being challenged, this gives the green light for the Japanese car-building giant to resume production of the eight vehicles halted by the recall. The target date for this is February 8. Additionally, Toyota dealers should be able to resume selling the eight prohibited models, including the hottest-selling Camry and Corolla, one they get the parts. And finally, NHTSA says that customers who receive a fixed pedal now will be eligible for a new pedal once said pedals reach dealerships. We’re not sure if Toyota’s down with that claim, though company president Jim Lentz did indicate that customers could work with dealers on a case-by-case basis if they want an all-new pedal instead of the fix.

  • Hale Solar Laboratory

    Pasadena, California | Inspired Inventions

Tucked away in a suburban Pasadena community is the former office and personal observatory of one the most prolific American astrophysicists, George Ellery Hale. Built in 1924, the Hale Solar Laboratory features a solar telescope enclosed within a 14-foot-diameter dome, a library containing many of Hale’s original scientific journals and books, and even a moat.

The small observatory is of Spanish Colonial Revival design, complete with mission tiles and stone reliefs that Hale commissioned the sculptor Lee Lawrie to create. Hale’s interest in Egyptology influenced Lawrie’s design for the frieze above the main entrance, which depicts the sun’s rays ending in numerous hands grasping various Theban symbols. The relief is a tribute to Akhnaten, the King of Egypt and worshipper of the sun god, Aten.

Hale’s list of scientific achievements is impressive, to say the least. He co-founded both the International Astronomical Union, the organization responsible for Pluto’s demotion, and the Astrophysical Journal, the premier peer-reviewed astronomy publication in the United States. He was a trustee of the California Institute of Technology and was vocal in the formation of the National Research Council. His discovery of intense magnetic fields inside sunspots made him the first person to detect a magnetic field around an extraterrestrial body. Hale is also credited with the invention of spectroheliograph, an instrument that enables astronomers to make detailed observations of the sun’s chemical structure by photographing its light at a single wavelength.

Perhaps most importantly, Hale was responsible for the planning and founding of three major observatories. With the construction of Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin and the Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories in California, Hale effectively built the world’s largest telescope three times over. For these achievements in particular, it has been said that Hale, more than anyone else, is responsible for the rise of modern astrophysics in the United States.

After stepping down as the director of the Mount Wilson Observatory, Hale ordered the construction of a personal laboratory so that he could continue research in the later years of his life. The observatory’s main instrument is a coelostat, which through a series of mirrors reflects the sun’s light into an observation pit 76 feet below the ground. In the pit, the sun’s light is dispersed into its component wavelengths before entering one of a number of solar instruments. It was at his personal laboratory that Hale developed the spectrohelioscope, a refinement of his previous invention the spectroheliograph. The new instrument made it possible to observe the hydrogen-rich prominences of the sun, filament-like plasma ejections that protrude from the solar surface.

Hale died in 1938, but important discoveries continued to be made at the laboratory under the operation of the Mount Wilson Observatory. In 1952, the father and son observing team of Harold and Horace Babcock built the first solar magnetograph at the laboratory. This instrument enabled them to finally measure the strength of the sun’s magnetic field. Today, the laboratory is a National Historic Landmark and serves both as a private residence and as the offices of the Mount Wilson Institute.

  • First Foldable R/C Cars Are Wallet-Sized Wonders [Toys]

Mattel’s super small “Stealth Rides” aren’t making their official debut until the Toy Fair later this month, but for all you know the guy next to you could be packing one… right… now.

They’re about the size of a credit card and the width of a cellphone, and with the push of a button they unfold into a remote control car. Apparently the Stealth Riders will come in five models: a “Batmobile Tumbler,” and four others that I immediately forgot about once I heard “Batmobile Tumbler.”

How it works: the folded up cards fit into a small case that also functions as the remote control. Just slide the car out, pop it open, and go to town for up to a half an hour. Or however long it actually lasts in real use.

You’ll have to wait a bit, though, before you start sneaking this out to cause havoc in budget meetings: it won’t be on sale until August, for $25. [CNN Money via Dvice]

  • Youngwood Court

Los Angeles, California | Eccentric Homes

For the past fourteen years, controversy has stirred over a private residence in Hancock Park. The affluent Los Angeles neighborhood, known as the place where the Ku Klux Klan once left a burning cross on Nat King Cole’s lawn, has garnered much recent attention for another one of its residents: R&B music producer, Norwood Young. More specifically, the nearly 20 statues of Michelangelo’s David that adorn the front lawn of his estate.

The street-side private residence, known as “Youngwood Court,” has been the subject of many lawsuits, traffic jams, and heated debates on aesthetic preference. Young purchased the home in the mid-1990s and — much to the chagrin of the local homeowner’s association — painted it white, erected an elaborate white iron gate, and set up 19 white statues of Michelangelo’s David.

For over a decade, Young faced — and filed — numerous lawsuits against neighbors and city officials who sought to tear down his aesthetic vision. Today, Young has finally ended his long legal battle and continues to exercise his yard-decorating rights, earning LA City Beat magazine’s title as the “King of Hancock Park.”

Though the David statues are the main attraction, Young adds to the spectacle by decorating his yard in thematic designs. This past year, Young celebrated his birthday with a tribute to the other “King,” Michael Jackson. Each David statue was fitted in a Thriller-esque jacket, and a 7-foot replica of MJ’s famous sequined glove was put on display.

For his annual winter holiday tradition, Young dresses his Davids in Santa Claus hats and displays an African-American Mr. and Mrs. Claus on a gold throne. Not to be outdone by the Claus’, however, the holiday scene also includes a larger-than-life replica of Young himself, as well as a gigantic lights display of a crown and “Norrywood” sign on his roof.

  • It’s not a promise, it’s a guess

“When is it going to be done?” is a reasonable question and we as software developers should try to come up with the best answer we can based on our experience and analysis. What we should not do, however, is treat our answer as solemn oath.

When you treat estimates as promises instead of guesses, you bind your worth as a worker to it. If you do not meet your own deadline, you are a failure. And since nobody likes to be a failure, they’ll indulge in risky behavior to avoid it, like burning the midnight oil and checking in bad code with scanty or no tests.

Rushing to meet your estimate promise once or twice might be bearable, but it’s ultimately unsustainable. Software development is inherently unpredictable. There are just too many moving parts and ice tips that turn out to be icebergs.

If you treat the estimate as a “best guess based on the limited information available to me before I start the work”, though, you’ll change the frame and break the cycle of deadline anguish. Now the task becomes collaborative and you can share new discoveries with the stakeholders.

Found out that doing the feature as originally designed requires changing some fundamental infrastructure that’ll add another two days to your one day estimate? Maybe it’s not worth it any more. Ask the stakeholder if he’s still interested in the feature when it costs three days instead of one. Or if there’s a way to simplify it such that the infrastructure change is not necessary.

That’s the true value of estimates. That it sets up conversational constraints that can be used as boundaries for trading concessions. Not that they’re nails for your own self-erected cross.

  • Blackrock Dumps Over 1,800 SEC Major Position Filings In A Single Day, Do They Own Most Of The Stock Market Now?

    blackrock_building

According to the eagle-eyed SEC-filing expert Footnoted.org, the SEC’s EDGAR filing system slowed down markedly on Friday as Blackrock dumped over 1,800 13-G filings into the system. The entire deluge happened within the span of two and a half hours.

What’s crazy is that these 13-G filings are generally required when one’s ownership of a company exceeds 5%.

While it would be surprising enough had these been old positions, in fact most appear to have been new ones:

Footnoted: With few rare exceptions, these filings represented new positions for Blackrock since we only counted 11 amended 13Gs, which in itself seems very surprising, given the long list of stocks.

And, indeed, there’s a lot of household names on the list including some big names in tech like Apple (AAPL), AOL (AOL), Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO) — several of which Dow Jones picked up on on Friday afternoon. But there’s a lot more names on the list too, including United Technologies (UTX), Toll Brothers (TOL), and even footnoted frequent flyer Martha Stewart Omnimedia (MSO) where Blackrock disclosed a stake of just over 7%.

Actually, a far more interesting project might be trying to figure out who wasn’t on the list since with 1,800-plus filings, just about any company over even a relatively modest market cap.

Here’s one for the conspiracy theorists — Blackrock is everywhere. It’s as if they own a substantial stake in most major companies on the stock market.

  • Spyker releases more details on Saab purchase, promises new 9-3 for 2012

The long saga of Saab has generated a lot of headlines for us in the past few months. The latest was word that the deal between General Motors and Spyker was initially rejected because of the fact that one of Spyker’s investors was tied to the Russian mafia. It wasn’t until the Antonov Group was bought out, allegedly, that the deal proceeded.

Today we received a press release from Spyker giving a few more details about its rationale for buying Saab, and it hints of what’s in store for the brand now that the tiny Dutch supercar maker has agreed to purchase this Swedish stalwart. Spyker says that they want to rebuild Saab’s global reputation, repositioning the brand as “an independent performance-oriented niche car company with an industry-leading environmental strategy.” Spyker also says that it is committed to allowing Saab to run its own business plan under its own management. That business plan has been analyzed by Spyker and its advisers, Booz & Co and KPMG Transaction Services. Even the Swedish Government and the European Investment Bank signed off on the blueprints.

Spyker plans to rename the company, swapping the current Spyker Cars N.V. for Saab Spyker Automobiles NV (“Saab Spyker”). The two branches will continue to run separately, with Spyker marching forward with their exotic lineup and Saab developing “three to four model lines.” Key news includes:

    • 9-3 – All-new sedan, hatchback, sports estate, X and convertible models in 2012
    • 9-5 – Sedan, sports estate and X models due summer 2010
    • 9-4X – for both the U.S. and European markets due early 2011
    • 9-1 – a fourth, smaller car line that would require more funding if it gets greenlighted

Spyker is anticipating sales of 100,000 to 125,000 Saabs a year with production continuing in Trollhättan. The 9-4X, however, will be built in Mexico. While the sale should be final in February, Spyker expects to work with GM for a bit longer, gradually reducing their GM dependency as they transition to other suppliers down the road.

Saab and Spyker should both benefit from the deal by sharing engineering know-how, assets and technology. Spyker gets access to a network of 1,100 Saab dealerships around the world, and merchandising, promotion & event sponsorship can be combined. Even parts and components will be engineered to be common in both lines of cars. It strikes us as a pretty ambitious plan, though they seem like they’re off to a good start having already secured the $1 billion they think they need to ensure Saab’s future. You can read even more details in the presser after the jump.

  • Windows Azure Drive: A Sign of Things to Come for Microsoft

Thumbnail image for microsoft_windows_azure-400-400.jpgIn the full spirit of cloud computing, Microsoft is making it a top priority to charge by the minute for applications that are ported to Windows Azure.

This is the case in today’s beta release of Windows Azure Drive, which allows Windows users to run their applications in the cloud using the Windows NTFS APIs.

The service is intended to make it simpler to migrate to the cloud.

    Sponsor

According to the Windows Azure Team blog, Azure stores the data in what Microsoft is calling “page blobs.”

“For the beta release of Windows Azure drive, customers will be billed only for the storage space used by the Page Blob and the read/write transactions to the Page Blob. This will be incorporated into the standard Windows Azure usage rates and there will not be a separate line item on the bill.”

Microsoft officially launched its Azure service on Monday. Beginning immediately, the company is charging for most of the services offered. As is standard with cloud computing, Microsoft is charging on a usage basis.

Does the strategy make sense? We think so. The economy is not getting better any time soon. Resources are constrained for IT shops of any size. The pay-as-you-go model makes it a bit easier to manage infrastructure costs.

According to Information Week, the pricing for Windows Azure Drive is as follows:

“In the standard plan, a virtualized Windows Server ranges from 12 cents to 96 cents per hour, depending on CPU usage. Storage starts at 15 cents per GB per month, plus one cent for every 10,000 transactions. Microsoft’s SQL Server costs $9.99 per month for a 1 GB Web database.”

The push to the cloud will continue unabated for Microsoft. Case in point is the deal with Hewlett-Packard, worth $250 million. The two companies are building a cloud infrastructure that spans hardware and software integration.

Azure is Ray Ozzie’s baby. He believes in it. And it may just be the path that Microsoft needs to be relevant in a world dominated by cloud-based applications.

  • New Toshiba Phone ‘Acts Like a Secretary’ [Cellphones]

Toshiba is working on a new cellphone with tech that allows it to, uh, behave like a secretary. Apparently, that means it tracks you wherever you go and gives you info without your asking. Sounds like a creepy secretary, Toshiba!

Despite the awkward way they’re pitching this, it does sound relatively interesting.

The technology, which could be available for practical use by the end of this year, enables cellphones to “predict” the user’s actions based on behavioral patterns monitored by such programs as the Global Positioning System, Toshiba officials said.

The technology also draws on acceleration sensors that detect the handsets’ movements, such as rocking and shaking.

For example, cellphones with the technology can automatically display train schedules for the nearest station when the user leaves home in the morning.

It can also recommend places to eat when the user leaves the office for lunch.

OK! Of course, this would need to be more useful than annoying for it to really catch on, which I’m skeptical about. When I leave my apartment in the morning, I generally know when my train leaves. I don’t need my phone pinging me with that sort of info. But I guess we’ll wait and see just how smart this, uh, “secretary” actually is. [Asahi via TokyoMango]

  • TWITTER TRENDS: IPCC flooded by criticism, by Quirin Schiermeier, NatureNews.com

    article image

Just over two years after winning the Nobel Peace Prize, the United Nations panel on climate change is undergoing a period of soul-searching.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has always been a target for climate-change sceptics. In recent weeks, however, criticism has mounted and the panel admitted to a glaring error in its last comprehensive report, released in 2007, which says that Himalayan glaciers are likely to melt completely by 2035 (see Nature 463, 276–277; 2010). On top of that, its chairman, Rajendra Pachauri, is under pressure to resign because the institute he directs, the Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi, has ties with companies that could benefit from climate policies.

In response, many climate scientists — including a number already involved in the next IPCC assessment, due in 2014 — have been putting forward ideas about how the panel might reconsider its rules and procedures. The hope is to reduce errors in the final product and create policies on potential conflicts of interest.

  • Man sought who molested 17-year-old boy while posing as a police officer

Cypress authorities are looking for a man who molested a 17-year-old boy while posing as a police officer.

The victim had been traveling south on Valley View Street from Orange at about 12:15 a.m. Monday when he pulled over on a side street to use his cellphone without violating state law, said Cypress Police Department officials.

As he pulled over, he noticed a reddish full-size pickup truck tailing him, officials said. The driver of the truck contacted the victim and said he was an off-duty police officer.

The suspect took the victim’s cellphone and driver’s license and told him to pull over just across the street, into the parking lot of a restaurant in the 9500 block of Valley View Street.

The victim did as he was told, and in the lot the suspect proceeded to conduct a pat-down search, sexually assaulting the victim several times, officials said.

In the course of the sexual assault, said Sgt. Tom Bruce, the victim realized the driver was not an off-duty police officer and became scared.

"He tried to make excuses as to why he had to leave," Bruce said.

The suspect must have sensed the victim’s nervousness, Bruce said. The man returned the victim’s drivers license and cellphone and allowed him to leave 15 to 20 minutes after pulling him over.

The man is described as a clean-shaven, 160-pound, 5-feet-11 white male, about 40 years old, with brown eyes and gray-brown hair. He was wearing a black jacket with front pockets.

If caught, the suspect would face charges of molesting a minor, false impersonation of a police officer, kidnapping and sexual battery.

Anyone with information should contact the Cypress Police Department’s Detective Bureau at (714) 229-6631.
