  • Amy Winehouse Bisexual?

Amy Winehouse is bisexual — at least that’s the word from one of her pals.

The “Back to Black” singer – who recently reconciled with ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil – reportedly told a friend that she has had relationships with women as well as men.

The pal told London’s News of the World that Amy has feelings for other women and even has a crush on Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole.

“There is nothing restrained about Amy’s sexuality. She doesn’t hold back and says what she feels. She often talks about other women. Her favorite is Cheryl, who she really fancies. Most women can appreciate another woman’s beauty but Amy definitely takes that to the next level.”

“So what? I like girls as well. I have had relationships with other women but that doesn’t mean I don’t still love Blake. There is something about being with a woman that is very satisfying. I don’t care what people think about me being bi – I do what feels good,” the 26-year-old songstress revealed to the friend, who asked not to be identified.

  • “The Situation” Cologne

Hey guys, how would you like to smell like a “Situation?” If you’ve ever fantasized about dousing your naughty bits with a scent that smells like a cross between Aqua Velva and old gym socks, this is your lucky day!

Jersey Shore’s well-chiseled ladykiller — Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino — is cooking up a sweet-smiling deal to launch his own fragrance. The personal trainer confirmed the news to NBC newsmagazine Access Hollywood, where he served as a guest correspondent at last night’s 2010 Grammy Awards.

The cologne will likely be called – What else? – “The Situation” and is expected to debut later this year.

“The name is just, it’s pretty cool. Who wouldn’t buy a cologne called Sitch by Situation?” he told Access. “It’s in the beginnings right now, but it should be coming out hopefully in the next couple months.”

The Situation added that he’d be checking out scents in the coming days.

“[I’m] a pretty spontaneous person. I don’t even know, as soon as I find something that I like, I’ll say, ‘That’s it! That is The Situation, and we’ll grab it.’”

  • Stephen Colbert shows off an iPad at the Grammy’s (video)

Apple always gets an leg up on its competitors with the glamour factor of its products. It’s starting already with the iPad.

At the 52nd annual Grammy Awards tonight, Stephen Colbert whipped an iPad out of his coat pocket (must have been a big pocket!) while on stage giving an award for Song of the Year. He said, “Jay-Z, did you not get one of these in your gift bag? Am I cooler than you?”

He asked if it made him look cool. As far as product placement goes, you can’t do much better than this. The question is whether this is one more example of free advertising for Apple, or if it paid to get Colbert to pull the stunt. The logic is always sweet. If you get celebrities to endorse your product, then more people will think it’s cool. And when lots of clone tablets come out, people will ignore them. They’ll only buy what’s cool, even if it’s more expensive than other tablets out there..

  • feature: Video editing in Linux: a look at PiTiVi and Kdenlive

Video editing on Linux has long gotten a bad rap. A few years ago, the only real options for video editing were either deeply limited in features and polish, or incredibly complex to set up and use.

While Linux still lacks a direct competitor to tools like Apple’s iMovie or Final Cut Pro, the current crop of video editing tools are much more capable and easy-to-use. Two tools in particular stand out: PiTiVi and Kdenlive. Both suites are under active development and look promising. In this article, we’ll take a look at what both of these tools can and can’t do.

  • Amazon Gives in to Macmillan and Apple, And E-book Prices Will Go Up [MediaMemo]

    That was fast.

Less than two days after pulling books published by Macmillan in a dispute over e-book pricing, Amazon has conceded.

The world’s dominant e-commerce company says it has agreed to Macmillan’s demands to sell its books at a higher price — and in doing so, has made a tacit admission that e-book prices will be rising across the board.

That’s because most of the industry’s big players have embraced a similar plan, advanced by Apple (AAPL) to support its iPad launch, to sell e-books for $12.99 and $14.99, instead of the $9.99 that Amazon (AMZN) had been pushing.

In an extraordinary statement published on the company’s site, the retailer says that it “will have to capitulate and accept Macmillan’s terms because Macmillan has a monopoly over their own titles, and we will want to offer them to you even at prices we believe are needlessly high for e-books.”

No word yet from the other big publishers who have sided with Apple in the e-book pricing war — Pearson’s Penguin Group, News Corp.’s (NWS) HarperCollins, Hachette Book Group and CBS’s (CBS) Simon & Schuster. But keep in mind Steve Jobs’ all-knowing pronouncement about Amazon and Apple e-books: “The prices will be the same”.

Also bear in mind that publishers will actually make less money with the Apple pricing plan. Under the old plan, they sold books to Amazon for around $15 wholesale, and Amazon took a loss in order to retail them for $9.99. Under the new plan, the publishers will get closer to $10 per book.

But the publishers are so freaked out by the parable of the music labels, which let Apple replace $15 CDs with $1 songs, that they are willing to take the hit in order to maintain some control of their digital pricing.

Odd as that sounds, there’s a logic to it, since e-book sales will be small for some time, and publishers think that this strategy will help keep the prices up when buyers really do embrace digital.

(Aside: The notion that digital pricing should be dirt cheap simply because it doesn’t cost the publishers — or music labels, or Hollywood studios, or whoever –  very much to distribute bits is facile. If you don’t believe me, try ordering a vegetarian entree the next time you go out to dinner, and then tell your waiter you refuse to pay full price because you know that vegetables cost much less than meat. It may be dumb for publishers to try to keep digital prices high, but it’s equally stupid to demand that they lower them on principle.)

It will be interesting to see what Kindle buyers make of the impending price hike, particularly since so many of them are price-conscious consumers who prefer to pay nothing at all for their books.

  • Does Foursquare Have A Douchebag Problem?

With Foursquare seeing fast growth and starting to be embraced by elements of the mainstream (like their new deal with Bravo), it might be decision time.

A popular part of the gaming element of the service is gaining badges, virtual tokens that show you’ve done a certain task on the service. Most of these are clever, like the Photogenic badge when you check-in to three different places with photobooths. But some are a bit more risqué, like the Douchebag badge. As Foursquare keeps growing, will there be pressure to get rid of these?

Increasingly, this issue is being brought up on Foursquare’s Get Satisfaction page. As one user wrote yesterday in the forum:

Has it occurred to the too-cool-for-school hipsters at foursquare that unlocking a “douchebag” badge for your fans because they check in at places like Barneys might:
    1. Be insulting to your users, especially if have chosen to share their badges with friends and
    2. Might also be insulting to your future customers and business partners like Barneys?

Total FAIL, guys. Who are you to judge what your customers like and don’t like?

Another user follows that up with:

I agree, it is also offensive to me and I suspect many others. What’s next, “Asshole” and “Dickhead” badges? At a minimum, users should be allowed to delete/block such an offensive badge in their profile.

A week ago, another thread was started raising the same issue:

I’m surprised to have unlocked the “douchebag” badge by checking in to a trendy hotel and must admit that I find the badge name rather offensive. What’s the point of it and why use such a crude name?

Editorial comment: If you’re trying to build a service that’s going to be appealing to more than just the uber-geeky among us, don’t y’all think that, just maybe, you should screen some of the words involved with the service?

That actually ties in very well with what Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley told Bits today while talking about the Bravo deal:

Bravo’s shows really overlap with our users and a new mainstream audience that we want to reach. I don’t think check-ins are a nerd-only experience. It’s about sharing content and experiences with others.

While the Douchebag badge may have been fine for the “nerd-only” crowd, they’re clearly starting to move beyond that, and some users are getting upset about it.

And while you might not see why this is much of an issue, coincidentally, I ran into this issue last night. I have my Foursquare account set up to auto-tweet out when I unlock new badges. Last night, I happened to be at a bar tagged as a “douchebag” bar, so when I checked-in, I unlocked the badge and it automatically tweeted out to all my followers.

For the record, I think the Douchebag badge is hilarious, and could care less that it tweeted out. But I certainly can see how that could be an issue for some people. To a lesser extent, the same is true with the Crunked badge (4 or more stops in one night, implying you’re drunk — which is probably true) and others.

Also, what happens when a venue doesn’t like that they’ve been tagged as a “douchebag” place?

This brings up an interesting dilemma for Foursquare: do they abandon some of the fun, quirky things that made the service what it is, in an attempt to go mainstream?

    [thanks malachi]

  • Deanmark’s AirMouse looks more like a ragged glove, less like an input peripheral

Controller-type devices baked into wearables have been around since the late 17th century (though we can’t seem to recall one in particular that was made before Nintendo’s Power Glove), but frankly, we haven’t seen a whole lot of innovation in this department over the past few years. Deanmark’s AirMouse is hoping to change all of that, but if we didn’t know any better, we’d say Microsoft kind of called this concept first. Anywho, the strap-on mouse — which doesn’t seem to boast any sort of price or release date — attaches on one’s wrist and fingers in order to place sensors on areas where you’d normally mouse. Naturally, the company claims that this approach helps fend of repetitive stress injuries and also enables a new level of multitasking, but until doctors start gluing these things to our hands at birth, we get the feeling that most folks will simply stick to what they know when it comes to cursor pushing.

  • Billy Idol Replacing Steven Tyler As Lead Singer Of Aerosmith?

While Steven Tyler’s been busy kicking a prescription drug addiction — and serenading shoppers at Home Depot — Billy Idol’s been even busier stealing his job as the lead singer of Aerosmith….

Classic Rock Magazine cites inside source who tattle that Idol could be replacing Tyler as frontman of the band his performed with for more than 30 years.

Sources say Idol was set to meet with Aerosmith’s Joe Perry last week, but fell ill with a cold that postponed discussions.

An informant says: “Joe said he wanted to talk to Billy about joining Aerosmith, because the band were having problems with Steven. As far as I know Idol did not show up due to having a cold.”

Perry recently admitted they have already talked to a number of singers about replacing Tyler — including Lenny Kravitz: “(There’s) a few people we’ve talked to, and we’ll see how it goes… As far as auditions go, we’ll probably just sit around and have a couple of drinks and see if we get along – because we’re already gonna know that they can sing.”

Who want to see Aerosmith without Steven Tyler?

  • Chinese Bank Lending Explodes In January, Hits 20% Of The Government’s Full Year Target In Just One Month

Chinese lending exploded higher in January, making a complete mockery of government attempts to curb rampant loan growth.

Manufacturing output also hit record levels despite tightening efforts, based on purchasing manager data from HSBC and Markit Economics.

Slowing the Chinese economy could prove far harder than regulators expect.

Bloomberg: Banks lent almost 1.6 trillion yuan ($234 billion) last month, the Economic Information Daily reported today on its Web site. That’s more than a fifth of the banking regulator’s target for lending this year.

  • WeeMichelle’s on a diet? – Updated With Blog Founder Comment from Gina

Michelle Obama has always led by example, so why should her campaign on childhood obesity be any different?  The Daily Mail reports that both Sasha and Malia will have an overhaul on their lunch boxes.
The article mentions that the girl’s pediatrician noticed a slight weight gain.

The First Lady said that she had been warned by the family paediatrician that ’something was getting out of balance’ with her two children Malia 11, and Sasha, 8.

The article goes on to highlight what changes will be made to Sasha and Malia’s diet.

The girls then had to adhere to new ground rules – less burgers, low-fat milk, and fruits and water instead of sugary drinks; the change was significant, she said.

As a mother of a “husky” little boy, I try to watch portion sizes, sugar intake and add more fruits and vegetable to Biko’s diet.  I certainly can appreciate the First Lady’s campaign against childhood obesity.  I can’t wait to see what programs she initiates as a result.  My hope is  that our schools will pay close attention, especially the school cafeterias around the country.  Posted by Bridgette of http://trailblazer-firstlady.blogspot.com. ***Blog Founder Comment***

Hey folks, this is Gina. Sorry to interject in Bridgette’s conversation, but as someone who was a morbidly obese child, I CRINGE at any public discussion of a child’s “weight” or “diet” in a public space. I’ve been on a diet since I was 6 year’s old. While I applaud First Lady Obama’s focus on childhood obesity, let’s leave her children out of it at this site.  Once people feel free to comment on a child’s weight/ diet, they don’t stop. All the skinny people commenting, including the First Lady, are well intentioned, but being an overweight child is HELL, let’s not A) indicate that children who clearly are not obese should be  on a diet likewise, treat fat kids with some compassion, they’re already torturing themselves and being tortured at school.  I just had to interject because it’s my worst nightmare that any child would be made to feel self conscious in anyway based on something posted on one of my blogs. I realize skinny people, including Mrs. Obama don’t understand or get this, but let’s leave her children, or anyone else’s children, out of the childhood obesity discussion on this blog.   At the end of the day, Mrs. Obama is another well meaning skinny person who can never understand the life of a fat child. I’m actually dreading this assault on fat kids. I still think she totally rocks, but I stopped taking weight loss advice from skinny people and I’m much happier. If you’re a fat kid, keep your head up. There is so much you can’t control about your life right now. When you get older, that will change, just hold on until then.

BTW Welcome Back Bridgette- We missed you!!!!!

  • Beyonce takes 6 Grammys, makes history

LOS ANGELES — Beyonce made history at the Grammys on Sunday as she collected six trophies, including song of the year for her anthem “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It),” making her the most decorated woman in one night in the 52-year history of the awards show.

The multihyphenate entertainer won her sixth trophy with best female pop vocal for her soaring ballad “Halo.”

Perhaps she was not aware of her record-setting feat; her acceptance speech was decidedly low key.

“Thank you so much. This has been such an amazing night for me and I’d love to thank the Grammys,” Beyonce said in her brief remarks.

“I’d like to thank all of the fans for their support over the years.”

The Kings of Leon, whose “Use Somebody” trumped her “Halo” to win record of the year, were a bit more entertaining when they picked up their trophy, the family quartet’s third of the night.

“I’m not going to lie, we’re all a little drunk. But we’re happy drunks,” said lead singer Caleb Followill.

Beyonce, who in 2004 won five Grammys on the strength of her debut album “Dangerously in Love,” a mark tied by the likes of Alicia Keys, Norah Jones and Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse and Alison Krauss, reached that milestone again Sunday en route to the new record. She is the first to reach that mark twice.

She won the songwriting trophy along with three writers for her omnipresent anthem “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It).” The superstar also won best R&B contemporary album for “I Am … Sasha Fierce” among her other awards, and still had the opportunity to win the evening’s remaining top award — album of the year.

Lady Gaga, who won two Grammys during the pre-telecast ceremony, kicked off the night with a sequined green leotard with massive shoulders as she sang her Grammy-nominated hit “Poker Face” amid an elaborate stage that included dramatic choreography and pyrotechnics.

Moments later, she scaled things down a bit — as much as Lady Gaga can — and brought out Elton John as they melded her song “Speechless” and his classic “Your Song” together in a performance that featured dueling pianos, and glitter-painted faces.

Taylor Swift, who was second to Beyonce in Grammy nominations with eight nods, won three early awards, including best country album. Though the 20-year-old has won just about every award imaginable over the past year for her best-selling CD “Fearless,” she was wide-eyed when she accepted her trophy for country album.

“I just keep thinking back to when you’re in second grade and you sing in the talent show for the first time and people joke around and say, ‘Maybe we’ll see you at the Grammys some day.’ But that just seems like an impossible dream,” she said. “I just feel like I’m standing here accepting an impossible dream.”

Later, she also collaborated with a rock legend: Stevie Nicks joined her on stage as they both sang Nicks’ “Rhiannon” and Swift’s “You Belong With Me.”

The Grammy for best new artist went to the Zac Brown Band, while best rock album went to Green Day for “21st Century Breakdown.”

The Black Eyed Peas also had three trophies, as well as Jay-Z, who won for best rap solo performance and two awards for “Run This Town” with Rihanna and Kanye West.

Rihanna — who was forced to bow out of last year’s awards as a performer after being assualted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown, accepted the trophy along with Jay-Z with Beyonce’s young nephew in tow. West — who has been keeping a relatively low profile since his dustup with Swift a few months back — was a notable no show.

Maxwell, up for six awards, also won his first Grammys — best R&B male vocal for the ballad “Pretty Wings” and best R&B album for “BLACKsummers’ night.” The album marked the R&B crooner’s return after an absence of eight years from the music business.

While Beyonce has won a caseload of Grammys during her career, she hasn’t won album of the year, but that had the potential to change Sunday. The superstar was nominated for album of the year for “I Am … Sasha Fierce,” along Swift’s “Fearless,” the most popular album of any genre last year.

Rounding out the album of the year category were the Black Eyed Peas’ “The E.N.D.,” Lady Gaga’s “The Fame” and the Dave Matthews Band’s “Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King.” The latter album was the band’s first release since the death of founding member and saxophonist LeRoi Moore.

Many participants in the program wore red cross buttons in support of Haiti earthquake relief. Mary J. Blige joined Andrea Bocelli in a rousing rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” which was not only designed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the song’s big Grammy wins, but to raise money for the people in Haiti. The performance, introduced by Haitian native Wyclef Jean, will be available via iTunes.com/target, with the funds going to earthquake relief.

The show also included a special 3-D tribute to Michael Jackson featuring a video clip he made of “Earth Song” as Usher, Carrie Underwood, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson sang along.

Jackson’s young children, Prince and Paris, accepted a lifetime achievement award for their late father.

“Through all his songs his message was simple, love. We will continue to spread his message and help the world,” Prince said.

  • JPMorgan: Fears Of Chinese Tightening And The Greek Default Are Overblown, This Is A Time To Buy

(This guest post originally appeared at the author’s blog)

JP Morgan’s latest strategy piece recognizes that the market is undergoing a normal correction that will ultimately become a good buying opportunity (see our similar outlook here).  They have turned near-term cautious based on the three growing global concerns:

    • Chinese tightening
    • Greek funding problems
    • A US Administration plan to downsize the large banks.

All in all, JP Morgan says these three uncertainties are likely to persist for the next few weeks, but do not alter the macro landscape.  Ultimately, the concerns will pass without damaging their recovery thesis (see JP Morgan’s top 10 trades for 2010 here):

“These three threats are unlikely to fade in coming weeks. Given the large number of investors who entered the year long equities, credit, and EM, one has to accept that the next few weeks will likely see further position squaring and continued weakness in risky markets. Further out, we retain a positive view and strategy on risky markets, as we do not consider the sum total of recent events significant enough to depress global growth. Our economic views are unchanged this week.”

How is JP Morgan responding to the downturn?  They are staying long with a desire to add to positions at lower prices.  They see no need to rush into equities at the current levels however.  They maintain their crude oil short and several FX and commodity hedges:

    • Asset allocation: Near-term correction on rising policy uncertainty. We stay with medium-term positive view. Investors planning to add risk do not have to hurry.
    • Equities: Uncertainty has risen, but not enough to change strategy. Stay long, focusing on EM, cyclicals, and small caps. Within financials, favor credit banks over investment banks.
    • FX: Sell GBP/CHF.
    • Alternatives: Stay short crude oil. Be long cocoa, sugar, and coffee, but short grains.
