  • Indian Authors, Publishers Unhappy with Google Books Plan to Scan

A group of 15 authors and publishers and two organizations in India have filed a formal objection to the Google Books Settlement.

The Indian Reprographic Rights Organisation and the Federation of Indian Publishers and these 15 individuals join a panoply of international entities who have objected to Google’s ambitious and controversial plan to scan as many books as possible throughout the world. Though the search and web app giant’s scheme would create a vast online library, it may also infringe on the rights of content creators and has involved a lengthy international legal battle.

    Sponsor

The coalition of Indian publishing entities claims that Google’s proposed settlement is a violation of copyright laws, both internationally and in India, because it allows for Google’s scanning, redistributing and selling books online. Content creators who don’t want their work online must opt out of the plan themselves; if an author does not explicitly opt out, his or her silence is deemed implicit consent.

In the past, Google’s book-scanning project has come under the scrutiny of the U.S. Department of Justice as well as the governments of Germany and France. Federal judge Danny Chin is currently presiding over the case, which involves a class-action lawsuit and a settlement of more than $100 million for copyright holders whose works had been reproduced without their consent.

The Indian authors and publishers have submitted their objections to the settlement to Chin, who has decided to hold a final hearing on February 18, 2010 to determine whether the Google Books Settlement is fair, adequate and reasonable.

  • ThisNext buys Stylehive to dominate social shopping

Social shopping startup called ThisNext is expanding — it just announced the acquisition of another social shopping site, Stylehive, and has created a new parent company called Curatemedia to manage both sites.

At ThisNext, you can recommend products you like, follow the recommendations of other shoppers, and also “shopcast” your ThisNext recommendations on other sites. Stylehive uses some of the same principles, but unlike the varied, generalist collection of products discussed on ThisNext, it focuses on style and fashion, and also features recommendations from editors and bloggers.

Under the umbrella of Curatemedia, the Santa Monica, Calif. company says it will run ThisNext, Stylehive, and soon other social shopping sites that cater to specific audiences and shopping categories. Curatemedia says Stylehive has 600,000 registered users, while millions of consumers visit ThisNext every month.

The company did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition.

ThisNext also confirmed that it has raised a third round of funding, which was revealed last week in a regulatory filing, and which comes from Clearstone Venture Partners, Anthem Venture Partners and Lightspeed Venture Partners. The company didn’t specify the size of the round, but according to the filing it was $1.2 million. If that’s correct, it has now raised a total of $8.7 million.

  • Grande MK II Initial Ownership Experience

I am glad to tell you guys that I took delivery of my Grande MK II, GX, 8 seater, Platinum Beige on 27th Jan evening from Concorde Motors Chennai.

On road cost was about Rs 8,53,000. The committed delivery date was 25th evening.

I have taken a couple photographs which I will post later..

    I added the following:

3M CR50 sunfilm for the sides & rear and CR 70 for the front. The also got the b and C pillars blackened using 3M black films.
Added the reverse sensors which have the mirror display with the vocal warnings

    Delivery experience:
The sales person was honest and did not give any misleading information
I was not impressed with the accessories team. They have dirtied the interiors when fixing the sunfilms. The roof linings are smeared with dark handprints. There was water below the foot mat.

    Driving Experience:
Took it up to Salem/Yeracaud/Namakkal last Saturday/Sunday. Returned via Perambalur/Kadalur/Pondy

Mileage was about 12.3 in both legs of the journey. I kept around 90-95 Km speed.

Handling: For the speed of 90-95 KMPH I felt it was ok. On narrow winding roads it at these speeds the body roll is pronounced as expected. On the way up and down to Yercaud in the hairpin bends I was comfortable with the car.

Ride:My father and father in law who are in their mid 70s were very comfortable in the middle seat. My 12 year old daughter who was in the third did not complain when I went through some rough roads in between Namakkal and Preambalur. Between Ulundurpet and Kadalur the road was bad but the passengers were happy the way the car handled the potholes:)

Engine: I could manage the climb to Yercaud mostly in 3rd gear and 2nd with a very light foot on the accelerator. The engine was pretty quiet just above 200RPM,but between 1700 and 2000 there is a very disconcerting booming noise.
In town the pick up is good even from lower rpms like 1100 or 1200. I did not have to change the gears often.

Gear shift: At times I find it hard to slot the first gear when starting. The rest of the gear changes are acceptable, not very slick.

Others: The door rattles when going over pot holes :Frustrati
The car is due for the its first service which is between 1000 and 1500.I am planning to leave in for service on Wednesday, and will make another trip to Salem this coming week end to drop my parents back. Will give my feedback once I am back from that trip.

Let me know if you need any specific feed backs.

Overall I am happy with the choice..

  • Global Nitrogen Problem

This month’s scientific American is carrying an article on nitrogen fertilizer.  It describes the well known problems associated with our present methodology.
We sow our soils with soluble salts that provide a sufficiency of the necessary nutrient but also flood the same soil with an unutilized surplus beyond the reach of the crop.  We try to minimize the wastage but the article makes clear just how poorly we are doing.
Once again, I emphasize the oncoming importance of biochar in remediating this whole problem.  The authors make no mention of this, suggesting that as usual it is continuing to be poorly understood.
Recall elemental carbon will grab free ions in the soil and prevent their removal until plants arrive to extract the ions.  This simple trick appears to largely eliminate the excessive use of fertilizer.
Interest in the method has gotten plenty of mention but still is a long way from been main stream.  The present situation is restrained by a lack of methodology for industrial farmers who most need the fix.  I will be addressing that shortly.
Fixing the Global Nitrogen Problem( Preview )
Humanity depends on nitrogen to fertilize croplands, but growing global use is damaging the environment and threatening human health. How can we chart a more sustainable path?
    Key Concepts
Nitrogen pollution from smokestacks, tailpipes and heavily fertilized croplands creates a  host of challenges for the environment and human health.
Such ills are mounting as some countries burn more fossil fuels and pursue fertilizer-intensive endeavors, such as bio fuels production.
Synthetic fertilizer remains indispensable for meeting global food demands, but the world can—and should—do more with less.
Billions of people today owe their lives to a single discovery now a century old. In 1909 German chemist Fritz Haber of the University of Karlsruhe figured out a way to transform nitrogen gas—which is abundant in the atmosphere but nonreactive and thus unavailable to most living organisms—into ammonia, the active ingredient in synthetic fertilizer. The world’s ability to grow food exploded 20 years later, when fellow German scientist Carl Bosch developed a scheme for implementing Haber’s idea on an industrial scale.
Over the ensuing decades new factories transformed ton after ton of industrial ammonia into fertilizer, and today the Haber-Bosch invention commands wide respect as one of the most significant boons to public health in human history. As a pillar of the green revolution, synthetic fertilizer enabled farmers to transform infertile lands into fertile fields and to grow crop after crop in the same soil without waiting for nutrients to regenerate naturally. As a result, global population skyrocketed from 1.6 billion to six billion in the 20th century.
