  • The Colorful Cats of Andy Warhol

    Warhol1

On yesterday’s post about the 2010 cat calendar from Animals in Color, there were several reader comments comparing Sebastiano’s colorful cats to the work of pop artist Andy Warhol. Well, did you know that Warhol was a huge cat lover? He and his mother, Julia Warhola, both loved cats and had several of their own, all named Sam except for one called Hester.

In the 1950s, before Warhol became famous for his pop art, he worked as an advertising illustrator and graphic artist. During this time he created numerous whimsical drawings of cats. He even created a limited edition artist’s book 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy (that’s not a typo, the d was originally left off “Name” in error, but Warhol liked it and kept the mistake.) Apparently the cats in this book were based on the images of the famous cat photographer Walter Chandoha, not Warhol’s own cats. The original copies of 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy were given by Warhol as gifts to clients and friends (an original sold in May 2006 for $35,000), but it has been republished and used copies can sometimes be found on Amazon.

Reproductions of all the cat images can be found at Allposters.comfor as little as $7.49 US.

Warhol continued to be inspired by cats, creating this cat portraitin the 1970s using his signature Pop Art style.

    Warhol3

Warhol’s cats continue to appear on various merchandise, including this 2010 Mini Wall Calendarfeaturing the drawings in a colorful layout, as well as in the book Cats, Cats, Catspublished in 1994 featuring 19 black and white and 20 color illustrations accompanied by playful quotes from Warhol’s books and diaries.

  • US Olympic Committee Sues Organization Trying To Build Sports Museum

The Olympics are notoriously protective of the Olympic name, even trying to block the trademark application for the Olympian, a newspaper in Olympia, Washington. Paul writes in to let us know that the US Olympic Committee has now decided it’s worth suing what appears to be an almost defunct non-profit organization called The International Institute for Sport and Olympic History. Apparently the organization was set up to try to raise funds for a museum dedicated to sports, but from the article, it sounds like it has failed to get very far, and has been (perhaps) left to die already (at one point, it was reported that the Institute’s bank account contained $52). But never one to let a dead organization die peacefully, the USOC has sued and is seeking “treble damages.” What damages? This is basically a defunct organization that never did anything. The USOC says, at the very least, it deserves three times the profits the organization made off the Olympic name. Well, three times zero is zero… so seems like this one could be settled pretty quickly.

  • Late Night: The New Age of Delusional Self-Importance, or “Fetch the Waaaahmbulance!”

AssholeBadgeOh, this will play well with the unemployed, homeless, and pretty much anyone with even a trace of a moral center:

A group of Wall Street banksters staged a rally the other day . . . and I don’t mean that stocks ended the day on an up note.

Things had gotten entirely too annoying. First it was White House (and populist) complaints about Wall Street recklessness and greed (humongous bonuses). Now it was White House desire to attach new regulations and taxes to banks. Enough!

And so a rally was organized at lunchtime on the 23rd floor of 14 Wall Street, directly across the street from the New York Stock Exchange, in the cushy offices of John Thomas Financial, a three-year-old investment house. It was much more comfortable than, say, the street.

As Thomas Belesis, the 35-year-old chief executive of John Thomas who hatched the idea, put it, “It’s cold out.”

Goodie, a bankster whine and cheese party! Who’s bringing the hankies?

I don’t know what’s funnier – that the company is named “John Thomas“, or that these pampered little parasites with their Prada loafers and spa manicures couldn’t be bothered to don their cashmere coats, silk scarves from Thomas Pink and Italian leather gloves to stand outside in the cold for a whole 30 minutes.

Or maybe it’s something else. Maybe the prospect of a . . . chilly . . . response from the lumpenproletariat audience was just too great a threat to their over-inflated sense of well-being.

Come on, guys, sack up! Where’s the courage of your convictions, if you honestly believe you’re being unfairly victimized and denigrated by the little people? You certainly thought you were Billy Badasses when you were designing ingenious new ways to rip off the rest of the world, all while you pushed the needle in your BMW M5s to 120 on your way out to the Hamptons.

Before the rally began, Mr. Belesis explained that he had begun thinking about forming this group in the last month or so as he heard “the repeating, relentless attacks on Wall Street.”

I wanted the people who work on Wall Street to be heard,” he said.

Yes, I can see how Mr. Belesis, poor beknighted soul, would be outraged by the fact that Wall Street has no megaphone of its own in the public square. Why, if only there were some method of ensuring that Wall Street’s interests had adequate representation in our government discourse!

THESE are the legendary Masters of the Universe? More like Slaves to Their Own Narcissistic PR.

P.S. If you haven’t read any of Matt Taibbi’s or Andrew Ross Sorkin’s work on the Goldman Sachs-otomy of our economy, I highly recommend this diary over at Daily Kos as a refresher, which reprints an AIG insider’s take of what actually happened in that fateful fall of 2008.

  • Adobe speaks up about Flash on the iPad

The iPhone and iPod touch haven’t run Flash natively in the years since their respective debuts, and it’s pretty clear based on Steve Jobs’s presentation yesterday that the iPad won’t run Flash, either. When scrolling through the New York Times’s main page, for example, where Flash ads or video might have been there were instead broken LEGO icons, big as life on the screen at the keynote.

Predictably, Adobe isn’t happy about this, and is accusing Apple of “continuing to impose restrictions on their devices that limit both content publishers and consumers.” They go on to say that without Flash support, “users will not be able to access the full range of web content, including over 70% of games and 75% of video on the web.”

Let’s work backwards from this. First of all, I’d be very interested to see where Adobe got those percentages. Apparently YouTube now accounts for a mere 25% of video on the internet? As for Hulu and a few of the other specific sites mentioned in Adobe’s rant, now that Apple is in the business of selling content, exactly how is it in the company’s best interest to provide access to that same content, through another company’s platform, for free? And as far as games are concerned, once again Apple has this covered, through the App Store. Far from being limited, content publishers and consumers will merely have to adjust to a new method of publishing and consuming content: one that doesn’t involve Adobe in any way.
I know anecdotal data is the worst kind there is, but in nearly a year of using my iPhone to connect to the internet, not only have I not missed Flash, I’ve been glad it isn’t there. Flash’s performance on Mac OS X is so abysmal that when YouTube announced an opt-in HTML5 beta to replace Flash, I bounced up and down in my office chair in glee. I can only imagine the bag of hurt that would be introduced if Apple let Flash run on its mobile devices.

If you want to know why Flash doesn’t run on the iPhone, the iPod touch, or the iPad, why Flash will never run on those devices, and why that’s a really good thing, check out this piece by Daring Fireball’s John Gruber. One of the key points of Gruber’s argument is that Flash is, by far, the biggest source of application crashes in OS X. Flash crashes so often that Apple’s engineers went out of their way to create a new mechanism for running plugins in Snow Leopard; in 10.6, Flash runs as its own process rather than being lumped in with Safari, meaning than when (not if) Flash crashes, it doesn’t bring all of Safari down with it. Considering Flash’s poor stability and fan-blasting, CPU-hogging performance on the Mac, gee, why wouldn’t Apple want it running on their mobile devices?

Want to see something that “imposes restrictions on content publishers and consumers?” Look no farther than Flash itself. According to the company’s own (possibly made-up) numbers, 70% of games and 75% of video on the internet is all shuffled through one company’s proprietary plugin. I don’t know about you, but that sounds awfully restrictive to me. It seems like a really bad idea to let a single company have that much control over the creation and delivery of the internet’s content, don’t you think?.

With the iPhone and iPod touch we already have tens of millions of mobile devices owned by tens of millions of highly satisfied consumers, and not one of those devices runs Flash. With the advent of the iPad, we can expect millions more mobile devices to hit the market, and none of them will run Flash, either. Thanks to YouTube and vimeo, HTML5’s star is on the rise for delivering free video content on the internet, and the App Store has gaming covered. There’s no telling what the internet will look like in ten years, but one thing appears certain: if things continue as they have, Adobe will no longer have the stranglehold over video and gaming content that it enjoys today.

  • College Goal Sunday- financial assistance for college bound students

    PRESS RELEASE
    January 26, 2010                                                 Contact: Dawn Alford, 509-542-5524

Columbia Basin College will host a free event for students and their parents interested in learning about federal financial aid for college and scholarship opportunities for Washington students.

PASCO – Columbia Basin College will host College Goal Sunday Washington January 31, from 2-4 p.m., in the Thornton Science Center.  The event is one of a series happening across the state for students and their families interested in learning about federal financial aid.

College Goal Sunday is a free program that helps students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the form that is required to apply for federal financial assistance for higher education.

As part of each College Goal Sunday Washington event, students who attend and register on theWashBoard.org — a free, scholarship clearinghouse for Washington students — will be eligible to win a college scholarship from the Northwest Education Loan Association (NELA). NELA is contributing $26,000 towards a new College Goal Sunday Washington scholarship program.

“The majority of college students need financial aid to attend college today,” said Karen deVilla, Executive Director of NELA. “The biggest barrier to college is money and knowing where to get the money you need.”

The FAFSA is considered the gateway to accessing financial aid resources, such as school loans and scholarships. Federal student loans offer many benefits not typically found in private loans, including low fixed interest rates, income-based repayment plans, loan forgiveness, and deferment options.

Originally held the Sunday before the Super Bowl, the fourth annual College Goal Sunday Washington series of events will take place throughout January and February at multiple locations across the state. More information can be found at http://www.collegegoalsundaywa.org/event-locations/.

Nationally, events are scheduled in 47 states, plus the District of Columbia. College Goal Sunday is supported by NELA and the Lumina Foundation for Education.

  • Gearbox Raising Borderlands Level Cap with General Knoxx DLC

    Borderlands

Gearbox is raising the level cap for Borderlands with the game’s next set of downloadable content, and we got our first official details on it tonight. Titled “The Secret Armory of General Knoxx,” the next content pack is planned for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The pack promises to be the largest so far, and includes a new environment with new enemies, items, and guns — just in case the gazillion or so guns weren’t enough for you already. It also raises the level cap, so if you’ve already dinged 50, the Armory will provide a chance to upgrade your treasure hunter.

Unfortunately, that’s all we know so far. The announcement didn’t include a price or date for the DLC. And though the press release touts the raised level cap, it didn’t mention what the new cap will be. We also have to wonder if new class abilities will be available, or if the skill points acquired will go towards filling out more of the existing skills. We’ll keep our ear to the ground for more details and keep you posted.

  • Fring for iPhone now lets you call with Skype over 3G

Now that the iPhone SDK seems to allow for 3G VoIP, it looks like the floodgates are beginning to open. Joining the ranks of iCall in this somewhat uncharted territory is Fring. Same deal as the previous one, the ability is already inherent in the current build, and now that the restriction has been lifted, users can simply place calls as they usually do through the service — yes, that includes Skype calls — only now not tethered to the nearest 802.11 cloud. As for the native Skype app, last we checked it was still not working. But it’s only a matter of time.

  • From DC to DC—a journey across continents

All right guys, this ain’t a travelogue of a long journey on a car, but one that involves change of my work place from Durgam Cheruvu, Hyderabad to downtown, Washington D.C. I’ll be posting many pics in bits and pieces, so please bear with me.

Prospects of a foreign trip started in the 1st week of December, 2009, when I was already in the midst of an implementation project. It was that very project that was to go-live just before Xmas, owing to which I had to drop out of the AP2AP trip. So instead of one helluva trip to the Himalayas, there came another to the banks of the Potomac river: I was deputed to a client for 3 months starting Jan 2nd!

Since I’d never been to very cold places (being used to warm places like Hyderabad, Vizag and Cuttack all through my life), I was a wee bit apprehensive. But thanks to team-bhp, I got many inputs on winter wear and footwear.

So the journey began on Jan 2nd in a British Airways flight from Hyd to London, and another from Heathrow to Dulles International Airport after a gap of 5 hours. The flight was very comfortable and the food was very good.

When I got off at Heathrow, I noticed the sea change that had taken place there since I last visited in 2003. The terminals were really spruced up and as good as Shamsabad, if not better and bigger.

Here is what I saw on Terminal 5:
The Audi and Lamborghini held me enthalled for more than an hour—absolute time pass in the airport for that interval.

  • USB Video Adapters

The Imaging Source USB video adapters convert standard video signals (PAL, NTSC, CCIR, EIA) into uncompressed video streams without audio. The video adapters are also available with a FireWire interface and as OEM modules. All The Imaging Source video adapters ship with drivers, capture software and an SDK.
The Imaging Source USB video adapters are used to digitize analog video signals. These adapters are used in machine vision applications and thus the digital video signal remains uncompressed. Additionally, to avoid any unnecessary data traffic, The Imaging Source USB video adapters do not digitize audio signals.
Although digital cameras with FireWire, USB and GigE interfaces dominate new industrial inspection applications, a very large number of legacy applications with analog video streams are still in operation. In addition to industrial applications, these include fingerprint sensors, ultrasonic and X-ray devices, dental equipment, endoscopic equipment and other devices that output analog video signals. Often analog video signals are also preferred for projects, in which long low-priced cables are required. This is typically the case for applications such as sewer inspection, traffic control and security applications.
Usually, these analog video signals need to be processed by a computer. If this computer has to be a laptop, PCI bus frame grabbers can rarely be used for the digitization of the video signals. For this case, The Imaging Source has developed a number of USB video adapters.

Industrial USB video adapters vs. multimedia USB video adapters
Industrial USB video adapters differ in three important points from multimedia USB video adapters:

    1. The Imaging Source USB video adapters are used for industrial purposes and thus they do not compress the digital video stream, nor do they provide audio.
    2. All The Imaging Source USB video adapters come with an SDK, which consists of a .NET component, ActiveX control and C++ class library. With this SDK, it is easy for programmers to integrate the converters into their application. The source code of numerous programming examples helps programmers to get started quickly.
    3. The Imaging Source USB video adapters are also available as OEM products.

  • ECOsine™ Active FN 3420 / FN 3430 ECOsine™ Active Harmonic Filters

ECOsine™ Active is the new generation of active harmonic filters (AHF). It reliably mitigates harmonics and compensates voltage dips as well as reactive power. ECOsine™ Active improves power quality in real time.

ECOsine™ Active’s functionality can be compared to waves in the ocean: If two waves of the same height and intensity meet, they cancel each other out. The same principle can be applied also to power networks. The AHF analyzes network disturbances and provides an opposing compensation current. In doing so, ECOsine™ Active actively adapts to fluctuations and responds in less than half a millisecond. Its compact dimensions, simple installation, and digital intelligence allow for a quick and straight forward integration in the most diverse applications.

Ultra-fast: ECOsine™ Active responds to disturbances in less than 300 micro seconds and eliminates them before they can cause damage.

Super-compact: The smallest 30A filter is handy, small, and easy to install, and also the 300A cabinet unit provides the highest performance in the most compact package.

Optimized for maintenance: Thanks to its design, the central modules in the 200 to 300A industrial models can be removed in less than 15 minutes (MTTR).

Suitable for industrial use: With the IP54 protection class ECOsine™ Active is resistant to dust and other environmental influences.

Numerous options: The ECOsine™ Active range covers specifications from 30 to 300A and 400 to 480V in either 3 or 4-wire technology.

Adaptive: ECOsine™ Active compensates for individual disturbance patterns in a targeted manner and automatically adapts to changing network topologies.

  • McAfee Warns of Cyberattacks on Critical Infrastructure

On Thursday, McAfee shed light on the cost and impact of cyberattacks on critical infrastructures such as electrical grids, oil and gas production, telecommunications and transportation networks. More than half of 600 IT security executives from critical infrastructure enterprises worldwide report large-scale attacks or infiltrations from organized crime, terrorists or nation-states.

The average estimated cost of downtime associated with a major incident was a jaw-dropping $6.3 million per day.

“In today’s economic climate, it is imperative that organizations prepare for the instability that cyberattacks on critical infrastructure can cause,” said Dave DeWalt, president and CEO of McAfee. “From public transportation to energy to telecommunications, these are the systems we depend on every day. An attack on any of these industries could cause widespread economic disruptions, environmental disasters, loss of property, and even loss of life.”

    Cyberattacks on the Rise

The report, titled In the Crossfire: Critical Infrastructure in the Age of Cyberwar, warns of the rising risk of cyberattacks. Thirty-seven percent of IT executives said the vulnerability of their sector has increased over the past 12 months, and two-fifths expect a major security incident in their sector within the next year. Only 20 percent think their sector is safe from serious cyberattack over the next five years.

Many of the world’s critical infrastructures were built for reliability and availability, McAfee noted, not security. Traditionally, these organizations have had little to no cyber protection, and have relied on guards, gates and guns. Today, however, McAfee said computer networks are interconnected with corporate IT networks and other infrastructure networks accessible from anywhere in the world.

“The recently identified Operation Aurora was the largest and most sophisticated cyberattack targeted at specific corporations, but it could have just as easily targeted the world’s critical infrastructure,” DeWalt said. “The attack announced by Google and identified by McAfee was the most sophisticated…

  • Dell Mini 5 Gets Mini Demo from Michael Dell

The following video is less than a minute long, but it’s all we needed.  It only takes 43 seconds for us to consider ourselves officially hooked on the Android-based Dell Mini 5 tablet.  Michael Dell (CEO) was in Switzerland at the World Economic Forum where a member of the CrunchGear team was able to catch up with him, camera in tow.

Dell repeats a couple of times that it will be coming in “in a few months” but plays coy when it comes to price.  CrunchGear speculates that the cost of the Mini 5 could be around $1,098 before any carrier subsidizes it.  Specs include a 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 3G, powered by Android 1.6.  We’re fans of the $30, all-you-can-use data plan available to the iPad, even if it is with AT&T.

  • Thomas-Rasset vows to pay nothing, so third trial inevitable

Mules, long noted for stubbornness, would seem to have nothing on either the music labels or Jammie Thomas-Rasset. Both sides have dug in deep and are prepared, almost unbelievably, to have a third trial on the question of whether Thomas-Rasset was a dirty P2P pirate… and of what she should pay if she was.

Thomas-Rasset was the first US defendant of the RIAA lawsuit campaign to take her case all the way to trial. That first trial in 2007 found her liable for copyright infringement and fined her $222,000. She was then granted a retrial by the judge on the grounds that he had been misled on one particular jury instruction that described simply “making available” a copyrighted file as copyright infringement. Citing Eight Circuit precedent, the judge decided that this wasn’t good enough and that only actual proof of a file transfer could be counted.

  • Bangladesh: A Trial Ends After 34 Years – Closure At Last?

In the wee hours of Thursday morning, Bangladesh authorities executed five ex-army officers for their role in the 1975 assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman – the country's independence leader and its first President. Mujib, or Bongobondhu (friend of Bengalis) as he was popularly known as, was assassinated along with most of his family members, relatives and aides during a coup by young army officers on August 15, 1975. Two of his daughters survived, as they were out of the country at the time. The elder of the two, Sheikh Hasina, is the leader of Awami League and the current Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

For the supporters of Mujib, it had been a long, 34 year wait for justice and closure. Soon after the assassination, the newly installed President, Khondaker Mostaq Ahmed formulated the Indemnity Ordinance which offered legal immunity to those involved in the coup. It would be much later, in 1996, that Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League party would come into power and revoke the ordinance, thereby clearing the path for trial and conviction of those involved in the massacre. In 1998, 15 of the 20 accused were given death sentences by a judge. However, most of them had by then fled the country. Only 4 were in custody and later one more person was jailed after being extradited from the US. Nevertheless, the trial dragged its feet. When Hasina lost the 2001 elections, the next elected government did not show any interest in furthering the case. Furthermore, the usual bureacracy of the judiciary and the politicization of the process resulted in the trial slowing down. On returning to power as Prime Minister with a landslide victory in the 2008 Parliamentary Elections, Hasina promised a speedy conclusion of the trials. Finally the judicial process reached its conclusion earlier this month, with the President also turning down the convicts’ plea for clemency. Five convicts were hanged, with six others still absconding.

As news of the late night execution spread, hordes of Mujib supporters crowded outside the Dhaka Central Jail. Emotions ran high. For many, it was a time for closure. Tiktiki at Unheard Voice wrote:

The execution of the convicted murderers of Bangabandhu has happened. People started gathering around jail gate last night. The sms-es started flying. The journalists started gathering with cameras. There was a sense of inevitability around it. Yet, when it happened, how did the people react? I talked to one of them who until recently believed this will never happen. ‘Nothing to celebrate’, ‘End of a tragic chapter’, he said. But more importantly he said, it gives him a sense of closure.

In the comment section of the same post, Robin wrote the following:

I personally hoped hasina & Rehana and other members would recommend to the Court commutation to life in prison without the possibility of parole. I dont even know if that is possible in Bangladesh. Neverteless this was a long time coming & justice has prevailed however flawed and delayed.

As ambulances left the jail premises with the dead bodies, the crowd apparently became a bit unruly, with some among them hurtling shoes and stones at the passing vehicles, thereby giving vent to pent up emotions. However, surprisingly there were no significant public demonstrations during the rest of the day. Brian Palmer noted in his Letter from Dhaka:

The streets in the Dhanmondi section of Dhaka, where I am now, are traffic-choked and chaotic, but no more so than usual. Bangladeshi journalist colleagues report no major disturbances or celebrations other than last night’s deathwatch. They are slightly perplexed by the lack of public demonstrations and tell me they suspect that the ruling party, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, instructed its people not to make a ruckus. The opposition, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has issued no statements. This was an absolutely momentous event with very little public drama.

However, emotions ran high among netizens who reflected these emotions in their writings online. Shamim Chowdhury, from Maryland, USA wrote in the forum Daily Online Alochona:

…A shameful chapter been closed ushering return of trust on system of justice. Honor has returned home leaving dishonoring history behind. For last thirty-four years we have mourned Bangabandhu's departure with distress and guilty feeling for not been able to bring the killers to justice. Now justice has been served, we will be able to face the memory of our greatest leader, our friend, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

There were plenty of tweets and re-tweets announcing the news of the execution. While some tweets spoke of delayed justice and closure, others wondered if it will impact the nation's current political scenario.

@a_mahapatra Bangladesh executes Mujib's killers. “Justice delayed is justice denied” but at least it isn't an injustice! http://bit.ly/97oRpG
@SumonCNNIBN Great day for Bangladesh. Founding father Mujib's killers finally punished..remdeption for a nation figthing devlis (sic) of radicalism
@pragmatic_d: The divisive politics in Bangladesh won't end with the hanging of killers of Mujib. http://is.gd/7euBr

The issue of the long wait and delayed justice was brought up in many blog posts. For example, Abu Sayyed Ziauddin mentioned in Amarblog [bn]:

    অনেক মানুষ বিশ্বাস হারিয়ে ফেলেছিলো। কেউ কেউ বলতো – এই বিচার হবে না। কেউবা বলতো – সম্ভব না এই বিচার। কি দরকার বিচারের কথা বলে…কিন্তু অনেক মানুষ বিশ্বাস হারায়নি।

Many people had lost faith. Some would say, this trial will never be completed, others would say justice would not be possible so what is the use of talking about it?…But many people believed it would be possible, they held on to their hope.

Firoz announced in a post in Globalization and South Asia :

Justice Delayed, But not Denied: Proved in Bangladesh

To many Bangladeshis, this trial was as much about reaffirming their faith in the judicial system and justice. It was also a time for healing. J at Shadakalo blog commented as follows:

Madam Prime Minister, we know how easy it would have been for the five convicted killers to get caught in a “riot” and be accidentally killed. As cross-fires are happening every day outside the jail, one could have happened inside, too. Thank you for letting the law take its own course…Perhaps the face of your little brother will not haunt your sleep any more. You have aided justice to prevail. Now let the healing begin. Work to make this the shonar bangla your father promised, that the country expected from him. Complete his unfinished work.

Blogger Himu at Sachalayatan used this opportunity to remind the Prime Minister Hasina that there yet remained the task of bringing the war criminals of 1971 to trial. [bn]

I see the entire judicial process active in this trial. I feel hopeful that for every citizen who is killed, the same energy, patience and eagerness for justice will be shown by the judicial machinery. Justice has now been uncorked like the genie from a bottle. Madame Prime Minister, the conviction of the assassins of the Father of the Nation marched ahead with the blessings of the government. Now please show the same diligence in bringing to book those who tried to murder the nation. We want trial and punishment of the war criminals.

Amidst this outpouring of emotions however, there are some voices of dissent too. The assassins have their share of sympathizers too.

At Somewherein for example, in the comment section of a post by Chintito darshonik, blogger Nissongo Pothik wrote the following [bn]:

It is true that the murderers of Bongobondu's family have been hanged but why, under what circumstances they went on such a killing spree, we should also discuss and analyze those reasons.

Another blogger Hitlar09 raises some questions regarding the motivations behind the coup says that it is equally important to find out the real reasons that prompted the young officers to kill their once beloved leader. [bn]

The convicted were all brave freedom fighters. Why did they kill their beloved leader? Whatever it is, they have had to pay for it. Despite being freedom fighters they had to die at the gallows. My question is who had pushed them/ motivated them to take part in the grisly massacre? Who reaped the benefits of that 15th August? Will they not be brought to trial?

Some bloggers also expressed discomfort at the public venting anger at the vehicles carrying the dead bodies of the executed men.

Shopnochari at Amarblog noted that extreme hate often makes the one who hates as inhuman as the one he had hated for inhumanity.

Every crime deserves punishment and it was really essential to punish those who committed such a big crime. However, somewhere I had read that one should not hate another person too much. If hatred crosses a limit, then we become exactly like the one we hated.
