  • Pitch a perfect game in MLB 2K10, get a million bucks

Kids! Who needs school? Why sit in class learning about nothing important when you could be at home trying to pitch a perfect game in MLB 2K10? If your parents get all bent out of shape about you dropping out of school to play video games, kindly refer them to this post and direct their attention to the following statement: The first person to pitch a perfect game in MLB 2K10 gets a million dollars.

That oughta be enough money to buy your parents house and then kick them out. Yeah! Ice cream for breakfast! Air conditioner on full blast with all the windows open! No more taking the garbage out! Man this place is turning into a hot, smelly, sticky dump.

The rules are that the perfect game must be pitched on the Xbox 360 or PS3 and the entire game has to be recorded. Twin Galaxies, “official scorekeeper for the world of video game and pinball playing since the early 1980s,” will handle the judging. More details are available at 2KSports.com/perfectgame.

The game comes out March 2nd, 2010, so get those thumbs loosened up. And don’t really drop out of school. That’d be “whack” or whatever you kids use to mean something crazy.

  • UFC signs online pay-per-view deal in China. Say goodbye to your streams?

One of the arguments “in favor” of illegal UFC streaming just became a little bit harder to defend. The company signed a deal with China’s sohu.com to broadcast events online there. The first event to be streamed will be UFC 109: Relentless, headlined by Randy Couture v. Mark Coleman. No prices were announced.

The deal makes UFC available online in China legally for the first time. It’s interesting to note that many illegal peer-to-peer streams originate from China. How this will affect your next Sopcast session remains to be seen.

UFC President Dana White, who recently said that the company would spend any amount of money to combat illegal streams, said the deal would bring the company closer to its goal of becoming the most popular sport in the world. (Note: Good luck trying to overtake soccer.) He also put over China, calling it the birthplace of many of the martial arts used in the UFC.

Online piracy of sporting events, including UFC, is sorta tricky. In some cases, the sport simply isn’t available in the local market, so if you want to watch, you have to view a stream. There’s no moral eqivocation here: you want to watch the event, but you couldn’t pay for it even if you wanted to. So, stream that bad boy. This isn’t the case here in the U.S., of course, because not only can you watch UFC on regular pay-per-view, you can, in fact, watch legal streams.

If you want to argue that UFC pay-per-views cost too much money, be my guest, but you should know that UFC live events are expensive to attend, too. Nose-bleed seats for the upcoming UFC 111 event in New Jersey cost $53.

  • VoIP Over 3G Comes to the iPhone – And Maybe Even the iPad

iphone_logo_aug08.jpgYesterday’s iPad launch continues to dominate the tech news today. Besides announcing the iPad, however, Apple also quietly announced a major change to its iPhone policies yesterday: Apple now allows developers to use a 3G connection to make VoIP calls. The first application to make use of this feature is iCall (iTunes link), but chances are that Skype, Truphone and other VoIP providers are already working on updated applications as well.

    Sponsor

Until now, Apple’s iPhone SDK prohibited developers from developing VoIP-enabled apps that used the carrier’s 3G network. Developers who wanted to use VoIP in their apps had to restrict themselves to using this feature over WiFi connections.

skype_over_3g_fail.jpgThis restriction was purely Apple’s decision. AT&T had lifted its own ban on VoIP apps over 3G last October. Back then, Skype’s CEO Josh Silverman praised AT&T for this move and called it “the right step for AT&T, Apple, millions of mobile Skype users and the Internet itself.”

In our own tests, the iCall application worked just like advertised, though we did experience some lag and the application wasn’t 100% stable.

    What About the iPad?

While the iPad won’t have any built-in telephony apps, some versions of the device will come with optional 3G connectivity. Thanks to today’s change in Apple’s iPhone SDK policies, the iPad – which features a built-in microphone – now has the potential to work as a VoIP phone as well. We still have to wait and see if Apple will allow this, however.

  • Facebook Status Messages are the New Chain Emails

“This status is being tracked. The owners of Facebook have confirmed they will send $1 to the rescue fund for Haiti every time this is cut and paste as a status.” Sound familiar? This recent status message hoax has been making its way around the popular social network, duping members into posting the status as their own in the hopes that, by doing so, they’ve somehow contributed to the Haitian earthquake disaster relief fund without having to actually open their own pocketbook to do so. While that would be nice if it was true, this hoax is just one of many found on Facebook today.

    Sponsor

The hoodwinks, urban legends, fairy tales, humorous tall tales, and out-and-out scams that once arrived via our email inboxes have been slowly making their way to the world’s largest social network. And as before, people are being fooled into reposting because the message always comes from a trusted friend.

Just like the emails that once promised free money from Bill Gates for participation in a Microsoft email beta test, reposting a Facebook status isn’t going to produce money from thin air anymore than forwading a chain email message would have done in years past. And yet, the same people who are now savvy enough to junk the email forwards and scams into their Deleted Items folder in their inbox are blindly reposting status messages such as these as if they’re the gospel truth.

Folks, urban legends have evolved. Status messages are the new chain email.

Urban legends have filled our inboxes for years on end. Before the days of technology, these same stories were idly passed around via chats at the water cooler and over-the-fencepost gossip sessions with fellow neighbors. It’s said that the tales tap into a society’s dark underbelly by posing as cautionary tales about the dangerous world we live in (AIDS from a gas pump! A hook-handed murderer!), or they simply tap into our deepest hopes and dreams. (You can get rich quick! You just have to forward an email!). Legends like these may change over the years, but they will always be around in some form or another and they won’t be disappearing any time soon.

Watch Out, You’re Being Spied On!

Another recent message making the rounds warns of something called “Unnamed app,” a vicious little bot that’s supposedly slowly down Facebook while also spying on your activities. While there is some truth to the fact that Facebook applications have an unworldly amount of access to your personal data, this particular app is not a rogue spybot secretly tracking your moves, it’s just your everyday, run-of-the-mill software bug. And Facebook fixed it. But that probably won’t stop thousands from “helpfully” passing this message onto their Facebook friends for days (if not weeks and months) to come.

Your Account Will be Deleted Unless…

These viral status messages, brand-new creations about internet dangers and free money, aren’t the only hoaxes to find their way to the social space. Older urban legends have also been re-crafted to now fit the Facebook era. Take, for example, the warning passed around in the early 2000’s regarding the “overload” of people signing up for Hotmail accounts. According to this missive, Hotmail was over capacity and Microsoft needed to dump some people from the system. In order to prove you were still an active user, you were asked to forward the email to every Hotmail contact you had so that your account would not be deleted. Essentially a harmless prank, this warning transformed itself over the years, reappearing in various forms that threatened the accounts of Yahoo, then AOL, Friendster, Orkut, Bebo, and MySpace users alike. Today, that message is again being circulated as a Facebook status update. The new lingo? It’s not “please forward” anymore – it’s “Copy+Paste.” Because if you don’t, you know, your Facebook account will be deleted. Yikes!

In this case, the fear of losing Facebook access has led many users to repost the warning on their own walls, where it’s seen by friends who pick it up and pass it around too. But again, there’s no truth to this message either.

An Urban Legend or a Deeper Truth?

While the above hoax speaks greatly to our society’s increased reliance on technology, how strong those ties are and how fearful we are of being without them, others play on even deeper emotions. The Facebook story about their $1-at-a-time donations might not be true (side note: the company has set up a Disaster Relief page for those interested in legitimate ways to help), there’s a photo of a Haitian cross whose existence is harder to prove or disprove. Circulating via Facebook right now is this photo of a stone crucifix still left standing in the wake of the utter destruction that was the Haitian earthquake. That one’s real, right? Well, maybe so, maybe not. Ever since the creation of Photoshop, answering questions like these have gotten much harder to do. What matters though, is not the photo’s veracity (or lack thereof), but the fact that, to some, it seems to hold a deeper meaning about the nature of God – how he’s still there even in times like these. For Christians, it’s an image of hope in a world of suffering. And by reposting it time and again via Facebook, it’s spreading virally around the globe.

It’s precisely these emotions – our fears, our hopes, our desires – that urban legends tap into. And while some are more harmless than others, it can be difficult to know the difference between the truth and a false claim, as this above example clearly shows.

    Think Before You Post

So what can you do? Athough we’re no longer deluged by the well-meaning warnings and fables that arrived via our email inboxes, we’re still being subjected to their far-out claims. It’s just that the medium is different. Once again, it’s time to be vigilant. Just because you saw it on Facebook, that doesn’t make it true. Just because the message comes via a trusted friend or family member, that doesn’t make it worthy of reposting. Take a minute to think about it, use common sense, run a quick Google search if unsure, and then decide if that story is one to pass on.

  • John McCain to President Obama: Get Off My Damn Lawn

The Maverick was in a particularly bi-partisany mood last night.

[President Obama] first addressed right-wing criticisms that he is overseeing out-of-control spending by noting the situation he faced when he took office…The camera then cut to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who leaned over to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and appeared to whisper, “Blame it on Bush.” The two men then laughed.

Well, everyone agrees we need jobs — right?

Sen. John McCain said he wouldn’t support President Barack Obama’s push for a new jobs bill, saying it would just be a repeat of failed policy.

    “It’s a stimulus bill again. It’s failed.”

OK, then. What about bringing the US military into the 21st century?

“In his State of the Union address, President Obama asked Congress to repeal the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy. […] At a time when our Armed Forces are fighting and sacrificing on the battlefield, now is not the time to abandon the policy.”

    Extra Mavericky!

What about the whole speech, Mav?

I think that the American people don’t really enjoy these pauses of seeing members of Congress jump up and down like juveniles,” he said. “It’s just — these are very difficult times. Seems to me we ought to maybe restrain ourselves.”

I think McSame needs to mix in a few extra naps. He sounds very grouchy these days.

  • Rosenberg: Even With The Government Throwing Money At The Problem, Home Sales Collapse

    rosenberg

Analyst David Rosenberg notes that despite all the economic stimulus in the United States, people still aren’t buying homes.

So you can imagine what will happen when that stimulus is removed.

Breakfast With Dave: We could really care less if it was a frostier than normal December; it’s not as if it snowed in July (especially in the south where sales dropped more than 7%). We have the most stimulative fiscal and monetary polices ever concocted to support a recovery in the U.S. housing market, in addition to record affordability levels and the long reach of the FHA near 0% financing, and yet new home sales collapsed 7.6% MoM to a mere 342,000 units at an annual rate. This was the fifth weakest month in the past 45 years — sales of completed homes, in fact, were at their lowest levels ever and down 38% from the already-depressed levels of a year ago.

The inventory backlog, as was the case in the resale data, jumped to 8.1 months’ supply from 7.6 months in November, to stand at its highest level in six months. This is sure to exert downward pressure on housing values. In addition, as a sign of how tough it is to lure buyers to the showrooms, it took builders a median of 13.9 months — by far a record and 50% longer than a year ago — to sell a completed unit. During the boom times, it took a mere four months to make a sale upon completion.

  • Jay Leno says he hasn’t spoken to Conan O’Brien

Jay Leno tells Oprah Winfrey that he hasn’t spoken to Conan O’Brien throughout the recent contentious negotiations over “The Tonight Show.”

In quotes provided Wednesday by Harpo Productions, Leno tells Winfrey that “it didn’t seem appropriate” to speak to O’Brien.

But Leno says the two comedians might talk when “things cool down.”

NBC unseated O’Brien and moved Leno back to the program he had hosted for 17 years. Leno is scheduled to return to “Tonight” on March 1.

In a video previewing “The Oprah Winfrey Show” interview, Leno says: “This whole thing was a huge mess.”

Leno said NBC executives asked him to leave “The Tonight Show” in 2004 because they wanted to give the program to Conan O’Brien.

Leno told Oprah Winfrey he was “devastated.” He says the experience “was pretty shocking.”

Leno also says he told “a white lie on the air” when he said he was going to retire because he assumed he would find another job in show business.

Harpo Productions made an offer for O’Brien to appear on her show, but it hasn’t been confirmed.

  • An Inkling of Things to Come for the iPad

The cat is only just out of the bag, and still there are iPad-related websites, accessories, and apps being promoted across the web. Some were clearly just waiting to create something for whatever Apple released, and some appear to have been potentially been in on the secret for quite a while, unless they just have a very fast, talented graphics department.

Inkling is one of those that had a very slick website apparently waiting to go, since its updated site design went live shortly following the announcement, complete with mock-ups of the new iPad running its yet-to-be-released software. And Inkling covers a blind spot in Jobs’ iPad announcement, one which may have been created by a McGraw-Hill faux pas: education.

Billing itself as “the world’s first end-to-end platform for mobile learning content,” Inkling aims to go beyond the traditional textbook before traditional textbook availability has even really been discussed as an iPad advantage. As of yet, details about what that means for an actual distribution product aren’t that clear, though there are some promising suggestions about what it could mean.

First of all, there’s interactivity. It may seem like an obvious detail, but truly interactive independent learning education material is actually quite hard to come by. I can count on zero fingers how many times I cracked the seal on the CD cases that came bundled with my university textbooks which promised interactivity through software applications.

I think the iPad has a better chance at accomplishing true interactivity for a number of reasons. Not the least of which is the potential for sharing learning experiences between iPad devices. As Inkling’s site points out, learners and educators will be able to network using the devices and share what they’re working on. Research and comparing notes could actually take place with an ongoing element of synthesis, instead of via periodic check-ins, which could change the way we learn in a fundamental sense.

Right now, Inkling is mostly vague promises about a fairly Utopian view of a futuristic educational environment in which every student and every educator has an iPad, all of which can be connected. The scenario effectively eliminates the need for paper textbooks, and promotes collaborative work and healthy competition between students. I’m not naive enough to imagine that this is how things will look in June, or even in a few years following the iPad’s release, but I am glad to see people thinking this way.

If I’d had an iPad when I was a student, I probably would’ve paid a lot more attention to my studies. I definitely would’ve been more organized, since I wouldn’t have been using a single padfolio to organize all of my course notes. And I might’ve become a better group learner and worker, which would definitely be beneficial in the long run. I may not be sure about how useful the iPad is for everyday use, but it definitely has a future in education, so long as Apple makes a concerted effort to cultivate that future.
