  • FoMoCo’s Chicago plant to add 1,200 jobs to build 2011 Ford Explorer

According to sources familiar with the matter, FoMoCo will add 1,200 jobs to its Chicago plant for the production of the next-generation Ford Explorer. An official announcement is expected early tomorrow morning.

The move will bring Explorer production from Louisville, Ky., to the underutilized Chicago plant. It will bring back a second shift to the plant that currently employs about 1,400 workers.

FoMoCo has been retrofitting the plant for months and is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to kick-off Explorer production.

The 2011 Ford Explorer will be based on the Explorer America Concept (pictured above) and is expected to maintain its sharp-edged shape to keep it uniform with the Flex and Edge crossovers. Expect Ford’s EcoBoost engines to be a part for the lineup.

  • The Healthcare System: An Apple Tablet’s Biggest Opportunity

iTablet.jpgApple’s “iTablet” – whatever it may be – could be destined to transform our care delivery system in a major way. For years, key hardware vendors like Panasonic, Toshiba, HP and Intel have been working hard to embed tablet computers into hospitals.

The promise of improved clinical information systems, based on real-time information updates across patient touchpoints could be a workflow game changer. If the tablet becomes the tool that is carried with a nurse or doctor on their travels from patient to patient, it will save time, money and lives by enabling the first “always updated” system.

    Sponsor

    Unfulfilled Opportunity

Considering the massive expense of implementing an electronic health record (EHR) system – for example the $4 billion spent by Kaiser Permanente – data synchronization is a huge investment for the healthcare system. At the national level, the Office of National Coordinator (ONC) is administering billions of dollars of stimulus dollars to help systems move forward into the electronic realm.

But early today, the ONC’s Charles Friedman told a FDA interoperability meeting that in 2008, a mere 4% of systems in the United States qualify as “fully functional” electronic health record systems. With all the fantastic and innovative work that has gone into creating a healthcare specific devices, such as Panasonic’s series of tablet PCs, it’s not the mainstream yet.

A big part of this reason is usability of the software. Clearly, vendors have been building creative and durable machines. But in a similar way that earlier smartphones now seem clumsy compared to the iPhone, we haven’t yet seen a product that is amazing. Something like what we think the Apple tablet could be would change this landscape overnight and may be priced at a point that’s much less than other medical devices on the market.

    Mobile Health Momentum

The iPhone has already changed the face of healthcare. Apple shared this fact at last year’s iPhone OS 3.0 release and within the keynote at WWDC. The momentum that started with consumer applications has moved to forward-looking doctors and health providers. We know that it is becoming common practice for some doctors and nurses to carry both their company-issued Blackberry and their personally purchased iPhone.

airstripOBJan2010.jpg There are already amazing applications in the market. AirStrip allows doctors to monitor patient vital signs and receive alerts from afar. There are now personal health records that can be carried and updated from anywhere.

Additionally, there are information-rich applications that allow nurses, doctors and patients to look up health information in real time. Last week during the Haiti tragedy, an injured individual was able to use an iPhone to treat himself using an first aid application on the iPhone.

    Clinician Ready

Haiku-3Jan2010Small.jpgApple and EPIC systems have been collaborating to release the first version of MyChartManager on the iPhone. EPIC is a leading provider of EHR in the United States, and powers systems such as Kaiser Permanente and Palo Alto Medical Foundation in the Bay Area, to name a few. The application, named Haiku was released on Jan. 13, 2010, and several health systems are in the process of testing it. It’s a clear contender for the “killer app” in the hospital setting. Looking at the screenshots, it’s clear that more screen real estate would be ideal – which means it may be just the right time for an iTablet-like device to emerge on the market.

    It’s the Apps

It is nearly certain that iPhone OS 4.0 will create a path for existing applications to “upsize” to a tablet device, and this includes size. The medical category today is already the highest-aggregate-priced category on the App Store today, and with the promise of applications inside the clinical walls, the opportunity gets much larger.

The iPhone-to-tablet combination may be the biggest reason that a tablet is successful in the market, since the entire iPhone developer community will be able to deliver on this new platform. With Apple’s success in having an integrated OS that shares core libraries across both the Mac and iPhone, it is likely that a table device will also connect with apps from both the iPhone and the Mac.

    Workflow Wish List

Having had the opportunity to observe clinical workflow and talk with several healthcare providers – including Kaiser Permanente and the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital – we’ve compiled a list of device capabilities that would change healthcare. Our wishlist includes:

    • Real-time observations, including vitals signs: It is amazing that many systems still require doctors or nurses to take down vitals on pencil and paper, even when an EHR is in place.
    • Shift changes: Shift transitions between nurses can be greatly improved by having a device that is mobile and moves freely with each part of the staff, so that the shift exchange is a workflow generated process that isn’t tied to a physical location. Nurses move, the system should too.
    • Rich content delivery: The ability to share with a patient what is going to happen in rich detail, including video, can be a major force in improving readiness of the patient.
    • Video: Bringing remote feeds right into the emergency room, outpatient setting or other environment should be easier than ever before.
    • Family and friends: Offering a feature for family and friends to directly communicate with the patient is a huge opportunity. A tablet may be the perfect device to enable more personal discussion and check-ins with family members in the hospital, near or far.

    Prediction

If Apple does in fact show a tablet device at the Jan. 27 event, hospitals around the country will react with pilot programs, and we will see tablets and Macs join the iPhone in helping deliver healthcare with a new era of style and grace. It is also true that Apple will have an uphill battle getting past corporate IT; getting support in the enterprise as a new class of device is a daunting challenge. But the “iTablet” will give visionary IT leaders more opportunity to change the status quo and look to the future.

We can hear the doctor already: “Take two moments to fire up your iTablet, and teleconference me in the morning.”

What do you think, could a tablet be the product that brings Apple inside the hospital walls and improve the system?

  • Google Reader Can Now Track Changes to Any Website – Even if it Can’t Find a Feed

google_reader_logo_mar09.pngGoogle just announced an interesting update to Google Reader. Google’s online feed reader now allows you to track changes on any page – even those that don’t feature an RSS feed. Google will create its own custom feeds for these sites and update the feed whenever it notices a change. Google Reader will display a short snippet of the page changes in the RSS feed.

    Sponsor

Until today, Google Reader would simply respond with an error message if you tried to subscribe to a site that didn’t offer an RSS feed. Now, Google will simply create a new feed for the site and track updates. It’s not clear how often Google plans to ping these sites, however.

Thanks to this, you can easily track the latest discounts on Macys.com or updates to Zillow.com’s homepage.

    drudge_no_feed_google_reader.jpg

As far as we were able to see, Google Reader creates very clean RSS feeds for these items. While Google doesn’t make it obvious, you can find the newly created feed by clicking “show details” in Google Reader. Thanks to this, you can subscribe to this new feed in any feed reader and not just in Google Reader.

There are, of course, a number of other sites that also allow you to track when something changes on a site. ChangeDetection.com, for example, is a popular online service that will alert you whenever a page changes. Unlike Google Reader’s new feature, ChangeDetection.com also gives you a very detailed overview of of what exactly changed and what the page looked like before. The service also offers an RSS feed of these changes.

  • Analyst Sees iPhone Spreading To AT&T’s Rivals

Fueling speculation that an unlocked iPhone is in the cards, Oppenheimer telecommunications analyst Tim Horan predicted Monday that Apple will not renew its exclusive agreement with AT&T when the wireless carrier’s contract expires in May.

“We believe AT&T’s iPhone exclusivity arrangement with Apple will be expiring by mid-2010,” Horan wrote. “For wireless carriers, customers are demanding the device and they need to remain competitive.”

AT&T has been the exclusive carrier of the iPhone since its debut in 2007.

Horan sees an Apple agreement with T-Mobile as soon as this summer, followed by deals with Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel in the fall and Clearwire in 2011.

    Impact On Bottom Line

But that won’t mean instant profits for those carriers: Subsidizing the iPhone’s cost and market it with their voice and data plans will be costly, while upgrading networks to cope with the increase in data usage may cost the industry $3 billion.

Apple, on the other hand, would see an increase of millions of units sold annually, to $25 million.

Currently, the most widely marketed unlocked phone is Google’s Nexus One, released last month, which sells for $579, or $179 with a two-year T-Mobile plan. The unlocked version is being sold directly through Google.

Ramon Llamas, senior mobile device analyst for IDC Research, said Apple is likely paying close attention to sales of the Nexus One.

“You can be sure Apple is looking closely at how Google is making a run of it, and if they are not looking at it for innovation, you can bet they are looking at distribution,” Llamas said. “Don’t underestimate the number of people who will go into Apple stores or who shop directly from Apple.”

But Llamas isn’t convinced the unlocked iPhone is inevitable. “There are rumors,” he said. “But in our research we haven’t heard anything to suggest that Apple is looking at…

  • Considering parenthood? There’s an app for that

In just a few days, a UK couple will welcome their “iPhone baby.”

After three years of unsuccessful attempts at pregnancy, the couple downloaded an unnamed fertility calculator app. The mother-to-be, who wishes to remain anonymous, entered her temperature and other information daily. The app then did the necessary calculations to determine when she’d be most fertile. Just two months later, the couple had a little one on the way.

Since the Telegraph story doesn’t name the app the couple used, we’ve gathered a few with similar functionality:

    1. Fertility and Pregnancy Calculator [iTunes link] Much like the app in the story, this one will help a woman determine when she’s most fertile. After that, she can use it to track Jr.’s development. Free.
    2. iFertility [iTunes link] iFertility helps women track their Basal Body Temperature and adds an option to share logs with her doctor either via the app or email. $1.99
    3. Fertility Foods [iTunes link] This ebook for the iPhone and iPod touch by Dr. Jeremy Groll presents a diet-based method of increasing ovulation and getting pregnant. Dr. Groll is an OB/GYN specializing in the treatment of infertile couples. This book is an Iceburg Reader book, which are very well done. $15.99

A Barry White album wouldn’t hurt, either.

As a parent of toddlers, I get much use out of Pocket God [iTunes link], which my 6-year-old loves, PicPosterous [iTunes link] for uploading snapshots to a family gallery and Pickin’ Time [iTunes link], which both the 6-year-old and 5-year-old love. We even used Ambiance [iTunes link] for my son when we left his white noise machine at home while on vacation.

Last week an iPhone app helped save a life, and this week it helped create one. The tablet better have some REAL magic up its sleeve in order to top that.

  • F1 Update: Heidfeld signs as Mercedes GP test driver, Alguersuari confirmed at Toro Rosso

The off season in Formula One is nothing if not a big game of musical chairs. Sometimes drivers end up pretty much exactly where they were before the season ended – as were the majority of cases in between 2008 and 2009 – but sometimes everything gets reshuffled. This year things are looking more like the latter as the grid comes closer in to focus until the start of the season.

Following the recent announcement of Spanish veteran Pedro de la Rossa’s move from his longtime role as test driver for McLaren to the race seat at Sauber comes the inverse for Nick Heidfeld. The German driver – who has scored a pole position and marked two fastest laps but has yet to win a single race – has spent the majority of his career with the Sauber team, having debuted with Prost-Peugeot in 2000 and spent a season each with Jordan and Williams. This coming season, however, he’ll be relegated to test-driving and reserve duties with the championship-winning Mercedes GP team. Heidfeld had been considered a top candidate for the race seat with the newly-christened outfit until Michael Schumacher came in, and was linked to a potential move to Renault alongside his former team-mate Robert Kubica. The announcement from Mercedes GP is expected imminently.

Meanwhile Toro Rosso has confirmed, at long last, that Jaime Alguersuari will remain with the team, driving alongside Sebastien Buemi for the upcoming season. The announcements bring in two of the last remaining few parts of the puzzle, leaving only the empty Renault cockpit and the pay-drive seats at USF1 and the remaining one at Campos vacant.

  • Geneva Preview: Autocar samples the new Porsche Cayenne Hybrid

The second-generation Porsche Cayenne is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March along with its cousin, the Volkswagen Touareg. Both SUVs will mark the debut of a new hybrid drive system co-developed by the two brands, and both the revised Cayenne and Touareg will enter production some time this spring.

The SUVs will reportedly be using a version of the supercharged 3.0-liter TFSI V6 found in the Audi S4, with 325 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque. The crew at Autocar had a chance to ride along in a near-production Cayenne S hybrid recently and determined that the new machine could be a serious challenger to the new Mercedes-Benz ML450 hybrid as well as the class-leading Lexus RX450h. According to the Brit pub, the Porsche hybrid felt nearly as quick as the V8-powered Cayenne S, although the vehicle wasn’t instrumented. The Porsche was a later stage prototype than a Touareg Hybrid that VW has been showing for some time and it appears the engineers have refined the engine’s on-off transition, making the hybrid experience almost seamless. Expect all the details in two month’s time.

  • Blockbuster PS3 256-Player In A Server FPS MAG On Sale Tomorrow

MAG is an upcoming MMO shooter for the PlayStation 3 in development by Zipper Interactive. The game is scheduled for release tomorrow in North America on January 26, in Europe on January 27, in the United Kingdom on January 29 and in Australia and New Zealand on February 5 2010.

The game will utilizes advanced server architecture to support online battles with up to 256 players, with users divided into 8-player squads, with 4 squads forming a platoon, and 4 platoons forming a company. Each squad will be led by a player who has advanced through the game’s ranking system, somewhat similar to talent points that you would find in World of Warcraft, except you play that into skills and gun enhancements, or access to entirely new weapons. Character statistics and development will also increase with frequent gameplay through earning experience (XP). The players most advanced in rank will be able to either direct the battle or participate directly in combat.

There are multiple major game modes in MAG, starting with Suppression, which users to practice their PMC skills, gain some experience, and maximize casualties for the opposition in a 32 vs. 32 war.

Acquisition, which is a 128 player complex game mode requires strategy to be victorious. In Acquisition, Platoon and Squad leaders are given added tactical command abilities to call in additional attack or defense support to help reach the objective.

Then there is Domination Mode, where in this 256 player full scale battle, 128 players to a side go head-to-head in all out combat. This game mode is the most complex where each side battles it out to secure three main objectives.

Don’t forget about the Sabotage game mode, split into teams of 32 players each side. The objective is to cripple your enemy by stealing valuable intelligence while your opponents do whatever it takes to protect their intelligence and ultimately keep their enemy from reaching the objective.

Players will be able to customize the face, voice, and armor of their characters, as well as what weapons and kit they carry into battle.

The game begins in 2025. As time passes in our modern world, maintaining a full scale military becomes a burden. In a fully globalized world, the only security threat is from small scale rogue organizations against whom large forces are useless, and the fuel needed to supply increasingly mechanized armies becomes more costly. As a result, most nations armies decrease to the size necessary to defend against a “national emergency”. Furthermore, under the “Millennium Accord”, no nation’s military is permitted to leave its own borders, officially creating world peace.

In their place rise PMCs (Private Military Corporations). They have two advantages: first, they compete, lowering their cost, and second, they are allowed to work for anyone, anywhere. In an unregulated global economy, the companies soon compete by less than honest means. After enough mergers, bargains and buy-outs, however, the remaining PMCs decided to put their weapons to full use. The original attacks followed a simple plan: shoot a competitor’s soldiers, lowering supply to cause them to charge more and, ultimately, go out of business. The shadow war, as it was called, grew in secret until the conflict moved into full swing, with the PMCs securing their own interests and violently fighting for contracts. It is unclear if the story will continue after release or remain static.

The game will contain three different private military company factions:

    • Seryi Volk Executive Response/S.V.E.R. (pronounced “Sever”), a ragtag military force with personnel drawn from war-torn countries in the Middle East and Russia
    • Raven Industries, a faction with high-tech weapons and armor, comprising of West European soldiers.
    • Valor Company, whose soldiers are equipped with more standard-styled gear. They comprise of seasoned veterans from the United States, United Kingdom and Mexico.

    Video by TOTdb911.

I played the last beta a little bit with my usual buddy online and it was powerful. The different factions are well defined and the gameplay is fierce. Matches took no time at all to get together and in my experience (of playing various Battlefield games throughout the years for hundreds of hours, Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty MW2 for many hours) that MAG is a powerful contender to an already vast FPS landscape. This is going to be a surprise hit for Sony a lot sooner than they think. The whole MMO aspect of this is very well done and true war junkies will be absolutely thrilled with 256 players in huge maps. Someone I know pretty well who has a larger gaming background than me with FPS games played a lot of the beta; he seemed really obsessed. Whenever we talk, we’ll talk about how many days are left till its available – and that’s tomorrow of course.

Also, if you played the beta, here is a helpful topic on the Playstation Blog that talks about the differences between the most recent Beta and the Final version. Enhanced patch notes from beta to final can be found here at the MAG Blog.

Here’s a funny video promoting the game courtesy of Sony Playstation USA, which revolves around the slogan “It only does 256 players.”:

  • Google’s Chrome gets extensions on PCs, Mac users should ‘hang tight’

extensionsEven though Google’s web browser Chrome has been available for more than a year, it’s still adding important features that will help it match other browsers like Firefox. Today, Google announced the addition of extensions — programs that users install to bring additional functionality to their browser — for Chrome on Windows PCs

In the video outlining the announcement (embedded below), Google highlights a couple of extensions to illustrate the concept: Shareaholic for sharing webpages, Amazon.com for saving product wishlists, and Cooliris’ 3D wall. (Cooliris is getting plenty of endorsements from Google, lately, since it was also selected to develop the Gallery application for the Nexus One phone that Google built with HTC.) Extensions were previously available in beta testing mode, but now Google has taken the testing off, and there are more than 1,500 extensions available.

Google is also adding boomark synchronizing to Chrome, so that if you use the browser on multiple computers, your bookmarks will be the same across those devices.

All of these changes only apply to Windows users. Google’s blog post urges Mac users to “hang tight” because the company is “working on bringing extensions, bookmark sync and more to the beta soon.” That’s frustrating, but not too surprising since Google didn’t release a version of Chrome for Macs until last month.

  • Kourtney Kardashian Photoshopped OK! Cover Controversy

Most new moms wouldn’t mind being Photoshopped to look like a million bucks a nanosecond after delivering an eight-pound baby. Not Kourtney Kardashian! The oldest of Hollywood’s Kardashian socialites claims OK! Magazine lied about having an “exclusive interview” with her about her “body after baby” in its Feb. 1 issue, on newsstands now.

The reality star, who gave birth to son Mason on December 14, says OK! aibrushed its cover picture to make her look thinner than she actually is — and she isn’t happy about it.

“They doctored and Photoshopped my body to make it look like I have already lost all the weight, which I have not,” the 30-year-old Keeping Up With The Kardashians starlet complained to Women’s Wear Daily on Monday.

Kourt later took to her Twitter page to gripe about the Photoshopped controversy: “One of those weeklies got it wrong again…they didn’t have an exclusive with me. And I gained 40 pounds while pregs, not 26…But thanks!”

    OK! has not commented.

  • Pentax drops its new point-and-shoots

    Optio_H90_3_COUL
So Pentax announced some new cameras today, and while they aren’t going to blow anybody’s mind, I can’t do a disaffected anti-post for every point-and-shoot announcement. And besides, it isn’t Pentax’s fault. Their cool stuff is being saved up for NAB and all that; they can’t release cool lenses and DSLRs every day.

So, without further ado, meet the cameras with “designs so unique that not one can be labeled as ‘just another silver digital camera.’” (PR people, you’ve outdone yourselves)

    16456_Optio I10_PearlWhite_BackView_sm
    16456_Optio I10_PearlWhite_TopView_sm

Up first is the I-10. Its distinguishing figure is its retro-looking body and the inclusion of a gyro-based image stabilizer. They count “raising the ISO to 6400″ as a secondary image stabilization technique, but that’s a bit like including “decapitation” as an alternative to antibiotics. They also note that using this mode reduces effective megapixels to five. So in addition to decapitation it’s head-shrinking. Key specs:

    • 12.1 megapixels
    • 5x optical zoom
    • 2.7″ widescreen SD LCD
    • 1280×720@30 HD video

They boast that it has facial recognition technology that allows for up to 32 faces in the same frame, including dogs and cats. I’ll be giving this absurd and uncalled-for feature a separate post. $300.

Up next, the H-90. A nice-looking camera to be sure, but that’s far from making the camera a hit. The Casio FC-100 is a handsome camera and it has useful and innovative imaging modes. What does the H-90 have to say about that? Well, simultaneous tracking of 32 faces, for one. Just think of how many uses you’ll find for that. There’s a panorama function (up to 3 shots) but I don’t trust it because you can’t check the seams easily and you might end up with a weird-looking jigsaw of a shot. Better to do it with Hugin or something. All these new Pentaxes have “image recovery,” whereby you can recover the shots your girlfriend watched you delete. Okay, that’s pretty cool. Specs:

    • 12.1 megapixels
    • 5x optical zoom
    • 2.7″ SD LCD
    • 1280×720@30 HD video

Look familiar? Yes, it’s the same specs as the I-10 above. It’s not clear whether the LCD is widescreen or not, though. And no shifty-pixel image stabilization. On the other hand, they are careful to mention in the press release that the buttons are “round.” Tell me more! $180.

    E-90

Last, the humble E-90. Why, I wonder, did Pentax think to call attention to the idea of the “just another silver digital camera” idea when they’re clearly releasing one of those (if not three)? Don’t buy budget cameras unless you have to, although for $100 you could probably do a lot worse than a 10.1-megapixel, 3x zoom Pentax.

  • Manage Against Brand Damaging Videos with Yubby Pro

yubby_blogworld_oct09a.jpgWhile social media is often touted as a great lead generator and brand management tool, it can also help bad coverage spread like wildfire. Last year, two disgruntled North Carolina employees made an in-store gross-out video where they tampered with Domino’s Pizza orders. Despite the fact that the employees were fired, Domino’s was still dealt a major blow as the brand was tarnished and all efforts to recover were met with criticism. Video aggregator Yubby is about to launch a solution that helps startups mitigate the risk of brand-damaging videos.

    Sponsor

ReadWriteWeb first covered Yubby in mid-October. Similar to VodPod, the service lets you create video collections from more than 20 different content sites. From here, users merge their favorite videos into one embeddable widget. While the basic product is free, the company is launching premium packages to help companies monitor their brands and related events.

From between $2-$100 dollars per month, startup companies can track videos on a variety of platforms from a central dashboard by specifying keywords like the brand name, slogan or related industry tags. You can also look at traffic stats across multiple sites to see which videos are receiving the most airtime. In the case of Domino’s, the gross-out video scandal could have been avoided had the company used a similar system and reprimanded employees before duplicates emerged. In the case of customer-made videos, startups can take a proactive approach and work to make amends with the consumer before a bad video goes viral.
