  • Report: Infiniti considering front-wheel-drive vehicle

    Filed under:

Loyalists will accept a less powerful 2.5-liter G-Series in the model range, but how will they embrace a front-wheel drive model from Nissan’s upscale – and enthusiast targeted – Infiniti brand?

Larry Dominique, Nissan North America Inc.’s vice president for product planning, hinted during a recent interview that Infiniti is considering an entry-level vehicle (or a family of models) based on a front-wheel drive platform. This isn’t unfamiliar territory for the Japanese automaker. Shortly after the brand debuted, the front-wheel drive 1991 G20 (based on the JDM Nissan Primera) arrived on the scene. It was followed several years later by the 1996 I30 (a gussied-up Nissan Maxima). By 2005, in a strategy designed to compete with BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti had reverted back to an all rear-wheel drive lineup led by the 3.5-liter G35, and later with a few all-wheel drive models.

According to Dominique, many buyers do not know, or care, whether their vehicles are FWD or AWD, citing the Acura TSX and TL models as examples. “Those buyers are OK with it… I think we could deliver Infiniti off a different platform and deliver the experience Infiniti customers expect,” he added without going into detail.

  • Report: BBC planning Top Gear video game

    Filed under:

The BBC is planning to turn some of its most popular shows into video games, and along with Doctor Who and a kiddie show called The Night Garden, the Beeb is considering a console version of our favorite motoring show, Top Gear. There’s not a lot (or any) information on how the Top Gear game will work, but we do know that the BBC is most interested in creating the games for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. However, the BBC is also interested in a Facebook game as well as an iPhone version.

Since we don’t know anything, let’s speculate. How would a Top Gear video game work? Naturally, there’d be a driving component where you take various cars around Top Gear’s famed test track. Even better than that, you could take various cars around the track as different Top Gear presenters, including the Stig. Perhaps you could recreate some of the classic battles, like when Jeremy Clarkson and the Audi R8 took on Richard Hammond in the Porsche 911 (available after the jump).

Obviously, we could go on for some time here. So we’ll just say that we hope there’s a Mortal Kombat style level where the boys get to rip each others’ spines out, and leave the rest of the speculating to you, our dear readers.

  • Kirk Bloodsworth

In June of 1993, Kirk Bloodsworth’s case became the first capital conviction in the United States to be overturned as a result of DNA testing. On July 25, 1984, a    nine-year-old girl was found dead in a wooded area. She had been beaten with a rock, sexually assaulted, and strangled. An honorably discharged former Marine and Maryland resident, Bloodsworth was convicted of sexual assault, rape, and first-degree premeditated murder. He was convicted and sentenced to death on March 8, 1985. The ruling was appealed a year later on the grounds that evidence was withheld at trial, and Bloodsworth received a new trial. He was found guilty again and sentenced to two consecutive life terms.

After years of fighting for a DNA test, evidence from the crime scene was sent to a lab for testing. Final reports from state and federal labs concluded that Bloodsworth’s DNA did not match any of the evidence received for testing. On June 28, 1993, a Baltimore County circuit judge ordered Bloodsworth released from prison due to the results of his DNA test, and in December 1993, Maryland’s governor pardoned Bloodsworth.

By the time of his release, Bloodsworth served almost nine years in prison, including two on death row for a crime he did not commit.

On September 5, 2003, almost a decade later, Bloodsworth heard the news he had been waiting to hear for 20 years: the state of Maryland finally charged someone with the rape and murder of young Dawn Hamilton after matching DNA evidence with information from state and federal databases. The evidence matched the DNA of a man named Kimberly Shay Ruffner, who had been arrested on charges of robbery and attempted rape and murder a few weeks after Bloodsworth’s arrest in 1984. He pled guilty on May 20, 2004 to the murder for which Bloodsworth had been wrongfully convicted.

Today, Bloodsworth is involved in efforts for criminal justice reform and is an ardent supporter of the Innocence Protection Act (IPA). The IPA, which was signed into law by President Bush on October 30, 2004 as part of the larger Justice for All Act of 2004, established the “Kirk Bloodsworth Post-Conviction DNA Testing Program,” which will help states defray the costs of post-conviction DNA testing.

Over the years, Bloodsworth has been a national spokesperson educating the public on issues surrounding wrongful convictions and innocence and helping other wrongfully convicted death row exonerees readjust to society.

    Prosecutor’s Evidence at Trial
The prosecution based its case on several points:

    · An anonymous caller tipped police that Bloodsworth had been seen with the girl earlier in the day.

    · A witness identified Bloodsworth from a police sketch compiled by five witnesses.

    · The five witnesses testified that they had seen Bloodsworth with the little girl.

    · Bloodsworth had told acquaintances he had done something “terrible” that day that would affect his marriage.

    · In his first police interrogation, Bloodsworth mentioned a “bloody rock,” even though no weapons were known of at the time.

Testimony was given that a shoe impression found near the victim’s body was made by a shoe that matched Bloodsworth’s size.

    Post-Conviction Challenges
In 1986 Bloodsworth’s attorney filed an appeal contending the following:

    • Bloodsworth mentioned the bloody rock because the police had one on the table next to him while they interrogated him.
    • The “terrible” thing mentioned to acquaintances was that he had failed to buy his wife dinner as he had promised.
    • Police withheld information from defense attorneys relating to the possibility of another suspect.

The Maryland Court of Appeals overturned Bloodsworth’s conviction in July 1986 because of the withheld information. He was retried, and a jury convicted him a second time. This time, Bloodsworth was sentenced to two consecutive life terms.

After an appeal of the second conviction was denied, Bloodsworth’s lawyer moved to have the evidence released for more sophisticated testing than was available at the time of trial. The prosecution agreed. In April 1992, the victim’s panties and shorts, a stick found near the murder scene, reference blood samples from Bloodsworth and the victim, and an autopsy slide were sent to Forensic Science Associates (FSA) for Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing.

    DNA Results
The FSA report, issued on May 17, 1993, stated that semen on the autopsy slide was insufficient for testing. It also stated that a small semen stain had been found on the panties.

The report indicated that the majority of DNA associated with the epithelial fraction had the same genotype as the semen due to the low level of epithelial cells present in the stain. It was an expected result, according to the report. Finally, the report concluded that Bloodsworth’s DNA did not match any of the evidence received for testing. FSA did, however, request a fresh sample of Bloodsworth’s blood for retesting in accord with questions about proper labeling on the original sample.

On June 3, 1993, FSA issued a second report that stated its findings regarding Bloodsworth’s DNA were replicated and that he could not be responsible.

On June 25, 1993, the FBI conducted its own test of the evidence and discovered the same results as FSA. In Maryland, new evidence can be presented no later than one year after the final appeal. Prosecutors joined a petition with Bloodsworth’s attorneys to grant Bloodsworth a pardon. A Baltimore County circuit judge ordered Bloodsworth released from prison on June 28, 1993. Maryland’s governor pardoned Bloodsworth in December 1993. Bloodsworth served almost nine years of the second sentence, including two years on death row.

  • Still Some In The Music Business Who Believe The Impossible: Blur Manager Says ‘Piracy’ Can Be Stopped

I had just been thinking that one of the nicer things about the Midem conference this year was that no one really seemed to still be complaining about “piracy” as a problem, and really seemed focused on more positive opportunities for going forward (more on that later). However, not everyone got the message, apparently. In a discussion on the “manager’s role” in developing an artist in the digital era, Chris Morrison — who manages Blur and the Gorillaz, among others — waited until the end to start trashing “pirates.” What was odd was that earlier in the panel he was talking about how much attention and free publicity the Gorillaz got when their latest single showed up on file sharing sites last week. He even seemed proud of all that free publicity, but then later in the panel, he declared that if he could find out who had put the file up first, he’d bring him into his office and have all of his colleagues “give him a good kicking.” Then he went on the typical anti-unauthorized file sharing rant, saying, “I believe that piracy can be stopped and should be stopped.”

Back on the first day of the event, legendary producer/musician Pharrell Williams had noted that file sharing is “like taste testing,” in explaining that he wasn’t worrying about it, noting that if people liked the “taste” they could then find something worth buying. But Morrison was having none of it: “It’s not a taste. It’s like giving them the whole bloody meal!” That’s an interesting viewpoint for a manager to have, and one that makes me wonder. I can see how a record label — who tends to really only own the recording — could see things that way, but as a manager, he must realize that there’s a lot more to sell out there than just the music itself. So, no, it’s not the whole meal (bloody or not), but a taste of what the band itself has to offer. And many of the things bands have to offer are not easily copied and shared — and any manager who wants to cope with today’s digital market needs to understand that.

  • Want your happiest love ever? Does your paramour have all 5 out of 5 of these essentials for love?

love Whenever I coach people in improving their love life, I always start by asking folks what they are looking for in a longterm partner. Everyone gives me kinda the same list. They want someone:

sexy, smart, funny, charismatic, successful, rich

I say it’s okay to want these things – but there are 5 essentials which must come first — and if your partner doesn’t have these 5 essentials, then it doesn’t matter how sexy, smart, funny, charismatic, successful, rich he/she might be — they will not make a good partner!

The following is a FREE EXCERPT from my OPRAH .com-loved book PRINCE HARMING SYNDROME (which by the way, guys, this empowering love advice also applies to making sure you avoid PRINCESS HARMINGS ). Voila… the FREE EXCERPT :

Prince Charming/Princess Charming Trait #1: Does he/she want to be in a committed relationship? (Basically, does he embrace character values that match with your values for a committed happily ever after future? Are there “value deal breakers” when it comes to marriage, monogamy, kids, religion, etc.)

Prince Charming/Princess Charming Trait #2: Does he/she value growing as a person? (Basically, does he/she embrace character values that show he/she has an open and growing soul—values self-responsibility and seeking insights?)

Prince Charming/Princess Charming Trait #3 : Does he/she understand that a relationship serves 2 functions. It’s not solely a “den of pleasure”—it’s also a soul’s “laboratory for growth.” (Basically, does he embrace character values that show he/she absolutely wants a “relationship of shared virtue”?)

Prince Charming/Princess Charming Trait #4: Does he/she make you feel “safe” in the relationship to be your fullest potential? (Surprise: The top feeling a relationship should inspire is “safety.” Without safety, you will never arrive at feeling love—because you won’t allow yourself to be vulnerable enough for true intimacy. If your man embraces high-integrity character values, then you will trust him enough to reveal your truest self!)

Prince Charming/Princess Charming Trait #5: Is your paramour happy? (Surprise: If you want to live happily ever after, your paramour has to be happy! If he/she’s unhappy all the time, he/she will view you through non-rosy, dark-lensed life glasses! You need to find a man/woman who embraces character values that help him/her be emotionally stable, eventempered, addiction-free and full of high self-esteem.)

  • The Elevator Pitch for Enterprise 2.0

Which floor? We have not been writing too much as of late about Enterprise 2.0. Perhaps that’s in part because it seems like the phrase is getting a bit tired.

Perhaps also it is because it feels like so much of the discussion centers around the technology that Enterprise 2.0 is all about.

In any case, we found this post on Tech IT Easy. It goes through five elevator pitches to make for Enterprise 2.0.

    Sponsor

It’s a telling post. While it seems like Enterprise 2.0 is becoming widely adopted, there is still a struggle for how to explain what it means and how to pitch the concept to executive management, middle managers and the people who may find the technology valuable for their work.

    Let’s start at the top:

    CEO

How Enterprise 2.0 can help: Better productivity and innovation.

Apprehension: Productivity will decrease when employees have access to Enterprise 2.0 tools.

Pitch: “Do you rank amongst the 65% of executives disappointed with the level of innovation in their company?”

Our take: You need a champion in executive management for Enterprise 2.0. Going direct to the CEO may be fruitless – unless of course you are the executive manager making the case.

    Head of HR

How Enterprise 2.0 can help: Fosters a healthier culture across the organization and improves employee morale.

Apprehension: Employees may become less engaged.

Pitch: “Hey, I’ve heard that about 40% of the workforce are either disengaged or disenchanted. What are we doing in our company about that?”

Our take: What are we going to do when all of our employees have smartphones, work at home, and are working with a product team, partners and select customers on a time sensitive project?

    CIO

How Enterprise 2.0 can help: Better knowledge management within the enterprise, which leads to a better ROI on IT systems.

    Apprehension: Security.

Pitch: “Have you heard about this study showing that 46% of the people surveyed find what they’re looking for on the company Intranet? Did you know that twice as often they find what they want on the Internet?”

Our take: Have you heard about the five business groups that are using these SaaS environments? The services are pretty affordable. By the way, have you looked into the ROI on these cloud computing apps?

    Middle Manager

How Enterprise 2.0 can help: Technologies, processes and methods are evolving fast. There has to be a better way to manage the information

    Apprehension: Loss of control.

Pitch: “How do you feel about the figures that managers spend two hours a day looking for data and that most of it is of no value? “

Our take: How’s your email inbox looking?

    Experts

How Enterprise 2.0 can help: You can get your knowledge out to the organization more efficiently.

Apprehension: Top-down directed effort will make it harder to get the work done.

Pitch: “Have you heard that knowledge workers spend 30% of their time looking for expertise such as yours?”

Our take: How do you learn about new issues? Have you ever looked on Twitter to monitor real-time conversations about your particular expertise?

    Elevator Pitches: Do they Work?

Elevator pitches are meant to get the conversation started. Entrepreneurs don’t close deals immediately after a 60-second pitch to a VC. The parallel to Enterprise 2.0 is a bit thin but the process of thinking through the value of Enterprise 2.0 is an exercise that has merit and may make the difference when pitching that cool, new enterprise collaboration service you are so sure would be hit in the organization.

In the last several days, a view emerged that the tightening has un-officially begun.

China is restricting lending, and voters are lashing out at politicians who like to spend.

It’s only a matter of time before Bernanke is compelled to act to prevent inflation.

Indeed, as noted in a recent report from Morgan Stanley, the amount of “excess money supply” relative to GDP growth is “toppish” to use their words. Actually, it looks like worse than toppish. The contraction looks sharp, and equivalent with other peaks.

Jessica Alba is spending the week in Park City, Utah — as she joins much of the rest of Hollywood in celebrating the 2010 Sundance Film Festival — but the screen stunner raised a few eyebrows when she walked out halfway through the world premiere of her grisly and graphic new crime drama The Killer Inside Me.

    She wasn’t the only one.

According to reports, the film’s gory sex scenes and sadistic plotline proved too much for many viewers at the Sunday night screening. There was a massive number of walkouts in the 1,200-seat Eccles Theatre during the film’s first show over the weekend.

Adapted from Jim Thompson’s 1952 novel, Casey Affleck stars as Lou Ford, a small-town Texas deputy, whose cunning smile hides the homicidal sociopath that lies beneath. Jessica stars as a prostitute he becomes entangled with and Kate Hudson is the unsuspecting girlfriend caught somewhere in between.

Neither Affleck or Hudson were present for last night’s screening.
