  • The Health Risks of Naked Body Scanners

    The naked body scanners that government and submissive, fearful travelers are clamoring for in the wake of the Christmas day Northwest Airlines bombing attempt will expose people to harmful radiation creating an as-yet-unrealized health risk.

    And while the machines do a virtual strip search revealing much more than just knives and guns someone might have hidden away, the technology probably wouldn’t have revealed the bomb ingredients carried by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. Even so, The New York Times reports that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has contracted for 900 of the scanners to be deployed in airports across the country.

    The current technology uses one of two methods: the older backscatter X-ray method or the newer millimeter wave method.

    With the backscatter X-ray technology, passengers stand against a large backscatter machine as a pencil-thin X-ray beam rapidly scans them, producing a negative image of the entire body. The X-ray barely penetrates the skin. So while any weapons that are hidden beneath clothing are revealed, weapons or explosives concealed in body cavities or beneath heavy folds of skin are not.

    The Health Freedom Alliance (HFA) says backscatter X-ray machines are setting the stage for a future epidemic of cancer.

    While the manufacturers claim it would take about 150 scans to equal the amount of radiation exposure of one chest X-ray, frequent flyers exposed to the scans, plus extra radiation exposure at high altitudes could be a deadly combination for them. The operators of the machines and those who spend a lot of time around them face the danger from exposure as well.

    “Drawing on sources like The Mayo Clinic and The Radiological Society of North America as well as interviews with prominent radiologists, molecular biologists, and medical doctors, ionizing (penetrating) radiation in any dose, no matter how tiny, causes genetic mutations, which set all living cells exposed on the path to cancer. X-rays are considered ionizing radiation,” according to the HFA.

    Researchers at England’s Oxford University say that X-rays given off by medical equipment are to blame for thousands of cancers every year. So combine the scans you get for medical treatment with those you will receive while traveling and you can see how the danger increases.

    The millimeter wave technology machines may be as bad or worse. Researchers for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Technology Review blog write that the terahertz (THz) waves emitted by the millimeter wave machines interact with DNA in ways that are only now being understood.

    According to the blog:

    But what of the health effects of terahertz waves? At first glance, it’s easy to dismiss any notion that they can be damaging. Terahertz photons are not energetic enough to break chemical bonds or ionise [sic] atoms or molecules, the chief reasons why higher energy photons such as X-rays and (ultraviolet) UV rays are so bad for us. But could there be another mechanism at work?

    The evidence that terahertz radiation damages biological systems is mixed. “Some studies reported significant genetic damage while others, although similar, showed none,” say Boian Alexandrov at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and a few buddies. Now these guys think they know why.

    Alexandrov and co [sic] have created a model to investigate how THz fields interact with double-stranded DNA and what they’ve found is remarkable. They say that although the forces generated are tiny, resonant effects allow THz waves to unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication. That’s a jaw dropping conclusion.

    The blog goes on to say, “Of course, terahertz waves are a natural part of [sic] environment, just like visible and infrared light. But a new generation of cameras are [sic] set to appear that not only record terahertz waves but also bombard us with them. And if our exposure is set to increase, the question that urgently needs answering is what level of terahertz exposure is safe.”

    And if the dangers to our health aren’t enough to give you pause, consider how the images produced could be used. While the TSA and the machines’ promoters are saying the images produced are too vague to be considered indecent, a German security advisor recently explained to the German publication Bild.com just how revealing they can be.

    “Unlike with a complete X-ray examination, the rays do not go deeply under the skin. They see only the things which lie over it, so bladed weapons and firearms as well as ceramics,” Hans-Detlef Dau is quoted as saying.

    “Beyond that, they show intimate piercings, catheters and the form of breasts and penises.

    “But newer devices can automatically distort intimate areas in the picture.”

    And a reporter for The Guardian newspaper in the United Kingdom, viewing a trial of the new scanners that have been placed in the Manchester Airport, wrote, “The full-body scanner on trial at Manchester airport consists of two Tardis-like blue boxes that passengers stand between and produces a ghostly naked image with curves and genitals eerily visible.”

    The scanners produce an image that looks like a negative. And, as demonstrated here (caution: this image may not be suitable for viewing in a work environment or on a monitored computer) by using Photoshop computer software anyone can invert the image to create a photo of a naked body in full color.

    The TSA says the images are not stored and there is no way for them to be transferred or transmitted. But the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) disagrees and claims that the TSA specified in 2008 documents that the machines must have image storage and sending abilities.

    According to an EPIC press release:

    These machines produced detailed, three-dimensional images of individuals’ naked bodies and are being used at airport security checkpoints, court houses, and correctional facilities.

    While TSA originally provided assurances that the technology would not be mandatory for passengers and would include a privacy algorithm that blurred faces, the agency later withdrew these assurances. In April 2009, the agency announced plans to expand the mandatory use of body imaging to all U.S. Airports. This means that Whole Body Imaging devices will replace metal detectors at the primary screening devices in U.S. airports. As a consequence, the TSA could obtain naked pictures of every airline passenger, including children, who travel from a U.S. airport.

    That leaves open the possibility the machines—which can see beneath people’s clothing—can be abused by TSA insiders and hacked by outsiders, EPIC Executive Director Marc Rotenberg told CNN.

    And how believable is it that the TSA is not going to store images? Wouldn’t they want to have a record available if a terrorist did slip through security?

    Without a record of some sort there is no way to understand how the terrorist outwitted the system. And without that knowledge how can those invading our privacy while ostensibly trying to make us more secure ensure that that method—at least—is not used against us again?

    The fact remains that until the government is ready to make us more secure by profiling and targeting those who seek to harm us, these steps are just window dressing. Unfortunately it’s the type of window dressing that is designed to make us more compliant and submissive while empowering government and enriching a few well-connected corporations and lobbyists.

  • Q&A: ‘With More Political Space, Women Can Do More as Peacemakers’

    Ashfaq Yusufzai interviews ZAHIRA KHATTAK, a women’s rights advocate PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Jan 25 (IPS) As a political activist and president of the women’s wing of the Awami National Party (ANP), Zahira Khattak has been working relentlessly for the empowerment of women in the war-torn North West Frontier Province (NWFP) in Pakistan. She believes that by empowering them, they can contribute to the peace efforts in the region.

    "We are holding a peace jirga in the near future in which women from the whole province will be invited to speak on the prevailing situation," Khattak said, referring to the spate of violence in the NWFP, one of Pakistan’s four provinces. Women have also been providing comfort to the bereaved families of the victims of militant attacks in NWFP, she said.

    When a suicide blast killed 34 people in Charsadda district in the NWFP in November 2009, the female members of the ANP, including the parliamentarians, offered prayers for the victims to embolden the people, she said. ANP’s women also visit the sites of bomb blasts and houses of the slain victims to encourage their families.

    "Men dying in these attacks have mothers, wives, daughters and sisters, who are grieving. We go to their houses to give them psychological, mental and emotional support in these trying times," said Khattak, who is also the provincial president of the ANP.

    The ANP is part of a coalition government in the NWFP alongside the Pakistan People’s Party of Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister who was assassinated in December 2007. It was swept to power in the February 2008 elections, ousting an alliance of Islamic parties.

    Following the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, the Taliban government in Afghanistan was toppled towards, forcing the militant fighters along with al-Qaeda extremists to flee to porous Pakistan-Afghanistan border, taking sanctuary in the Federally Administered Tribal Area in Pakistan.

    They later spilled over into the nearby NWFP and started targeting business establishments and security personnel and installations. They also restricted women from venturing out in public without the accompaniment of close family members, and going to schools. In Swat district alone, some 185 girls’ schools have been bombed by the Taliban.

    Noting that the violence inflicted on women must be stopped, the former chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has also been working to expand public discourse to include the plight of the women in the province.

    She sat down with IPS to share her thoughts on what women have to go through in a war-torn society like NWFP.

    Q: The spate of violence in NWFP, including suicide attacks, can easily scare anyone. How are the women coping?

    A: Women have always expressed concern over the situation and struggled to live each day fighting off the dire consequences of such incidents. The women of this region have lost a lot as a result of militancy in the region.

    Q: You said ANP is organising a peace jirga (or council) where women will have a voice. How do you plan to mobilise them in this peace effort using the ANP platform?

    A: The ANP has always played a pivotal role in the efforts to mobilise the women to pursue peace initiatives in the region. An example of this was the peace rally organised by the women’s wing of the ANP in March 2009, which was aimed at promoting peace and harmony in the region while focusing on the role women could play in (achieving this goal).

    Q: After the peace council in March 2009, what’s next?

    A: The ANP women’s wing is planning to organise a peace conference in March this year, which would also include inputs from women who belong to other political parties. Even a sister of Baitullah Mahsud (chief of the outlawed Tehrik Taliban, who was killed in the U.S. drone attack on Aug. 5, 2009) is welcome to join our campaign against terrorism and contribute to our peace efforts.

    Q: How much more can women contribute to the peace efforts in the NWFP?

    A: Women can actually do more in establishing peace and stability in this region if they are given their due place within the socio-political structures of society.

    An example of this is the female governor [Habiba Sarabi] of the province of Bamyan in Afghanistan, who is working towards establishing reasonable conditions for promoting peace and stability in the province.

    Q: That’s interesting, but how come very few women are going into the political arena to vie for electoral seats?

    A: The political atmosphere in this country has never been conducive to women’s participation in electoral contests.

    In 2008, before the elections, a lot of women, such as Bushra Gohar of ANP, wanted to run for elective posts. But because of the situation obtaining then (mainly owing to the attitude of the mullahs or clerics in the NWFP, who frowned on women participating in politics), it was not possible for them to pursue their political aspirations.

    Hopefully, in the coming few years, the situation will change and women will finally be able to join the general elections, thus proving what they are capable of in the political sphere.

    Q: How does the ANP ensure that women are accorded the rights due them, including political ones?

    A: The constitution of the party has always given its women members equal status. We have used this very effectively, and because of the measures that we have taken (to ensure that they enjoy equal status with men), the number of women parliamentarians who represent the party has increased steadily over the last couple of years.

    Q: Are more women awakening to their rights?

    A: Yes, and they have done a lot to ensure that their struggles and efforts toward their political and social emancipation do not go to waste. The coming days will prove that.

  • Robert Pattinson Record Deal

    Has Simon Cowell offered Robert Pattinson a multi-million recording contract?

    Pattinson, who plays vampire Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga films, is a keen musician who plays piano and guitar and even contributed songs to the soundtrack of the franchise’s most recent film, New Moon. Now the Twilight star has been approached by music mogul Simon Cowell to sign a major record deal,

    The young Brit, 23, has even been told he can basically write his own check, according to London’s The Sun, who broke the story on Saturday.

    Other record companies have reportedly gotten wind of the offer, prompting a bidding war. Record execs think Pattz has the stuff to turn his voice into a big moneymaker, and everyone wants him howling on their tracks.

    “Robert is reluctant to be turned into a pop star and takes his music very seriously. He is a bit wary of signing up with Cowell who is, of course, associated with ‘The X Factor’ and pop….”

  • Miley Cyrus, Wannabe Bride

    Miley Cyrus, wannabe bride?

    America’s Most Famous Teen is reportedly ready for a walk down the aisle. Miley Cyrus, 17, recently denied she is engaged to Australian actor Liam Hemsworth after she was pictured wearing a ring on her engagement finger. Nonetheless, the Disney star has been joking to pals about the possibility of changing her name to match the 18-year-old Aussie’s.

    “Miley’s crazy in love with Liam, and keeps joking that Miley Hemsworth sounds so fancy and sophisticated,” a source close to TV’s Hannah Montana reveals in the Feb. 1 issue of Star Magazine. “She says she can’t wait to turn 18 this year so she could do whatever she wants – even marry Liam – and no one can stop her.”

    The “Party in the USA” singer has reportedly told her record company that she now wants to take a career break to spend more time with Liam.

  • YouTube Inks First Live Sports Broadcast Deal

    YouTube has announced an exclusive deal to broadcast live online the entire cricket season of the upstart Indian Premier League this year. “[This is] the largest and most extensive live streaming that we’ve ever done, I think that’s ever been done on the internet before,” Shailesh Rao, Managing Director, Google India said yesterday. The season will be shown everywhere around the world except inside the United States.

    YouTube streaming live sporting events? That could really shake things up. The UK Guardian said today that the deal is “casting into doubt the value of British TV broadcast rights.” Contrast this cricket deal with Major League Baseball’s $110 per year online subscription service.

    Sponsor

    YouTube has only done live streaming for a select few special events in the past, like the US Presidential Inauguration. For how long will the distinction between live and recorded video make sense, though?

    At a time when late night talk show hosts in the US are battling it out for TV time slots, news like this is just one more reason to wonder how long it will be until more big-ticket cultural phenomena move beyond seeing the web as a sideshow for stirring up popular support (”I’m with CoCo” Twitter avatars, etc.). Will there will be a major exodus onto the web as the main stage? TV execs have got to be feeling nervous.

    For the rest of us, for media consumers, a post-scarcity media landscape where competition for viewers isn’t made easy by captive audiences and advertisers could be a very good future. Of course the future is hard to predict, people thought television was going to be a major force for democracy.

    Live sports and other events on the internet could very well prove to be for consumers, as they say in cricket, a batsman’s paradise.

  • FCC ramps up crusade against robocalls

    The crusade against prerecorded telemarketing messages, aka “robocalls,” went into high gear over at the Federal Communications Commission in the past few days. The agency is proposing tougher restrictions on the technology, which allows vendors to generate over a thousand annoying phone messages per minute—a bargain at about two cents per hit. The new rules would require robocallers to get written consent from consumers before making them. And this restriction would include home phone owners who have an “established business relationship” with the company or entity making these auto-calls.

    In addition, the regulations would require telemarketers to include an automated, interactive “opt-out” system by which robocall victims could, then and there, tell the bot to bug off forever. “Those changes will empower consumers to choose the messages they wish to receive and avoid those they do not,” FCC Chair Julius Genachowski declared on Wednesday. All five Commissioners applauded the proposals.

  • Great Wall Cross PC U150 Ion-izes the Eee Keyboard

    Our interest in the ASUS Eee Keyboard has thoroughly waned as the Atom N270-based internals have aged with time, but the new Cross PC U150 from China’s Great Wall puts a little juice back into the remixed C64 form factor with the addition of NVIDIA Ion graphics. Sadly there’s no battery or wireless HD out, and it doesn’t support dual displays — the internal 5-inch touchscreen on the right shuts off when an external monitor is connected — so we’re not sold on this guy as a lap-based HTPC, but we’re willing to check it out. Anyone got 3888 Yuan ($570) and an extra ticket to China?

    Barrett-Jackson Vendor Cars – Click above for high-res image gallery

    There’s more going on at Barrett-Jackson than the auction in the big tent. There are literally dozens of vendors here in Scottsdale, and they’ve brought along everything from automotive artwork to pinball machines. Inevitably, we need a break from watching the auction action and wander outside for a look at what the various companies have brought in tow.

    The myriad vendor booths are home to a diverse array of rides, including local tuning company Fesler-Moss and its lineup of custom Camaros, plus Superformance with its Cobra, GT40 and Daytona Coupe replicas. Bridgestone brought out a genuine Ferrari F1 car, Mothers had a Foose Coupe and Callaway Camaro on display, the Roush booth displayed one of our favorite cars from SEMA, and Rich Evans brought out an old friend. Inside the tent, the duPont Registry amassed an impressive collection of vehicles ranging from a Pratt and Miller Corvette C6RS to an Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series. Wanna see ‘em? Chech out the whole lot in the high-res gallery below.

  • China’s Orwellian Future

    John Chan (陳冠中), an author from Hong Kong who is currently living in Beijing, has written a novel entitled The Fat Years: China, 2013 (盛世 – 中國, 2013). The story happens in 2013, when China enters a new era of material prosperity and everyone is happy, while the western world enters another financial crisis. The novel is compared with George Orwell’s classical political fable, 1984. It is already published in Hong Kong and scheduled for publication in Taiwan, but will not be published in mainland China.

    China in 2013

    How will China look like in 2013? Zhang Tiezhi (张铁志) of Taiwan’s China Times summarizes the social conditions as seen in the novel, which, to certain extents, are what we are witnessing now:

    西方国家在2011年再度爆发经济危机,进入「冰火期」而陷入长期停滞。唯有中国安然无恙,比今日更为富强、更为自信;人民们充满幸福感,甚至很high。中国的盛世来临了。

    Western countries faced another economic crisis in 2011 and entered a prolonged ‘ice and fire’ period of stagnation.  China, unharmed, becomes even stronger and more confident than today. People are happy, or even ‘high’. The Age of China has arrived.

    The main character said: ‘I know China still has a lot of problems. But think about it, the developed capitalist countries, headed by the US, have destroyed themselves. They have only recovered from the 2008 crisis for a few years, and are now in deep troubles again… Only China can spare itself of the crisis… Not only has China rewritten the rules of the global economy, it has also maintained social harmony. You cannot but appreciate this.’

    在书中的2013年中国,北京最重要的学术书店万盛书园倒闭了,自由派重镇刊物「南方周末」停刊,书店中任何关于反右、文革的书都消失了,曾经记载一段社会动乱时期的报纸现在也都消失了。而少数拒绝遗忘历史的人,成为与这个社会格格不入的边缘人,甚至被视为疯子。

    In the year of 2013 described by the book, Beijing’s most important humanities bookshop, Wansheng, has closed down. The important liberal magazine, Southern Weekend, has ceased to exist. You cannot find in any bookstores books about the anti-right campaigns and Cultural Revolution. Newspapers which recorded past periods of social instability are all gone. The few people who insist on having a memory of history are marginalized, or even treated as insane.

    Newspeak

    In 2013, so the book describes, China will also promote a set of national strategies, summarized in 10 points:

    1. 一党领导的民主专政;
    2. 稳定第一的依法治国;
    3. 执政为民的威权政府;
    4. 国家调控的市场经济;
    5. 央企主导的公平竞争;
    6. 中国特色的科学发展;
    7. 以我为主的和谐外交;
    8. 单民族主权的多族群共和;
    9. 后西方后普世的主体思想;
    10. 中华文明举世无双的民族复兴

    1. Democratic dictatorship under one-party rule;
    2. Rule-of-law with stability as top priority;
    3. An authoritarian government which rules for the people;
    4. A state-controlled market economy;
    5. Fair competition dominated by state-owned enterprises;
    6. Scientific development with Chinese characteristics;
    7. A self-centered harmonious foreign diplomacy;
    8. A single-ethnicity sovereignty with multiple ethnicities;
    9. Post-western and post-universal values;
    10. Renaissance of the matchless Chinese culture

    This is reminiscent of ‘Newspeak’, which Liang Wendao (梁文道) commented:

    听起来好像没什么了不起,你仔细看他们好像每一样都是矛盾的。既然是央企主导,他又怎么能是公平公正呢?既然是科学发展,怎么还会有中国特色呢?但是无所谓,那个年代这些矛盾的词都被统一起来了。久而久之,大家就适应了,就没问题了,这是一些新词语嘛,对不对,然后至于我们现在很多人关心的什么人权问题,自由问题,那些东西到了那时候也不重要了。

    Seems there is nothing special about them, but on closer look, each point is contradictory with itself. If it is state-owned enterprises dominated, how can it be fair? If it is scientific, how can it be Chinese? But never mind, in time these contradictory words will all be unified. After a while, people will become more familiar with them, wouldn’t they? By that time, the so-called issues of human rights and freedom will become unimportant.

    Happiness without freedom?

    Will freedom and human rights become irrelevant in China? In a thoughtful twitter broadcast organized by Du Ting (杜婷) this month, the author himself and a Professor from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Zhou Baosong (周保松), touched upon the issues of freedom:

    周保松: 对历史的反思就是深化对问题的理解。盛世到底怎样,这样的盛世是否值得追求?我们需要思考。自由为何对我们重要?自由不是独立在幸福以外,自由就是幸福的一 部分。

    Zhou: Reflections on history is essential to deepening our understanding of problems. Is such kind of ‘fat years’ what we are after? We need to think about that. Why is freedom so important to us? Freedom is not independent of happiness, freedom is part of happiness.

    陈冠中: 幸福和自由不对等,剩下没有自由的幸福,世界是否可以自然持续?在內地可以看到,官话套话越来越厉害。历史上曾经有过,八十年代进行过反思,认为影响了中国的发展。巴金说了,说真话,但是这些年又回来了,没有了说真话的自由。

    Chan: With the inequality between happiness and freedom, resulting in happiness without freedom, could the world sustain itself naturally? In mainland, we can see that official ‘newspeaks’ are becoming more and more common. In the 1980s, the Chinese society went through a period of self-reflections. Ba Jin spoke out, and spoke the truth. But in these years, we have fallen back. We have lost the freedom to speak the truth.

    陈冠中: 为何只要用的词、字语不同,就不高兴。我们知道,如果只有正面的反馈,没有负面的反馈,是非常糟糕的。中国只有一个声音,丧失了纠正错误的能力。所以自由非常重要。

    Chan: Why does [the government] become unhappy once the words used are inappropriate? We know that it would be terrible if there are only positive, but no negative, feedbacks. If China only has one voice, it will lose the ability to self-correct. Therefore, freedom is very important.

    Lord Patten, the last governor of Hong Kong, said China promoted the idea that one could get rich without needing democracy. But he did not think that the Chinese model of ‘authoritarian, illiberal, proto-capitalism’ would win out, because it lacked the ‘safety valves’ provided by democracies during tough times. As Winston Churchill famously said, ‘democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried.’

  • “Jersey Shore” Club Appearance Ends With Near Riot

    See what happens when you invite Snooki and The Gang to your place of buisness? Police in Montclair, New Jersey say fans of MTV’s controversial reality series Jersey Shore nearly caused a riot during a promotional event at a local nightclub on Friday night, forcing the closure of a thoroughfare and leading to the arrests of four people.

    Dick Grabowsky, who owns the 501 Lounge, told The Newark Star-Ledger that things quickly spiraled out of control when almost 2,000 fans showed up for an advertised meet and greet with the cast of the hit reality show. The intimate nightspot has a capacity of just 800.

    Montclair Police Chief David Sabagh says fights broke out among the crowds who gathered.

    “They had crowds much larger than they could control,” Sabagh told The Star-Ledger. “They had 600 upstairs, 200 to 300 downstairs and 400 outside. … There were fights inside and fights outside.”

    Four people were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and drunk driving. The event closed a stretch of the main business strip outside the club for two hours.

    Jersey Shore, which chronicles the escapades of eight 20-somethings sharing a summer house in the resort town of Seaside Heights, wrapped its first season last week as one of MTV’s biggest hits of the new year.

  • Another Warning Sign: China-Based, Singapore-Listed Firms Rapidly Collapsing Amidst Debt And Fraud

    singapore

    Here’s a fascinating, just-out artcile in Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (sub req’d) about the collapse of Singapore-listed, mainland China-based firms that have collapsed amidst an inability to repay debt and fraud.

    Since late 2007, a spate of so-called S-chips – mainland companies listed on the Singapore exchange – have borrowed money then failed to repay the debts, with some becoming mired in fraud scandals.

    Of the 11 S-chips that issued convertible bonds between 2005 and 2008, six have declared themselves unable to repay. Two of those six – steel group Delong Holdings and property developer Sunshine Holdings – have successfully restructured their finances while the rest remain locked in talks with creditors.

    Convertible bonds are debt instruments that investors can convert into shares at a later date.

    Another five S-chips failed to repay bank loans during 2008-9. The effects on their share prices have been, predictably, crushing.

    Not surprisingly, global investment banks have been involved in pushing the S-chips’ debt onto investors

    In June 2008, blue-chip investment bank Morgan Stanley sold US$109 million worth of convertible bonds issued by waste recovery group Sino Environment Technologies, based in Fujian , to a group of lenders including US investment firm Stark Investments.

    Sino-Environment’s share price has since crashed from S$1.30 (HK$7.18) on the day it sold the convertible bonds to S$0.135 when the stock was suspended from trading in September.

    During that period, Sino not only defaulted on its bonds – the Singapore-listed firm is also being investigated by the city state’s Monetary Authority, a person involved in the case confirmed, after its auditors Pricewaterhouse Coopers said they could not verify the whereabouts of US$85 million of Sino-Environment’s cash.

    The most interesting is probably this one, which is involved in an industry where you don’t typically get a lot of publicly-traded action:

    The most recent S-chip bond  default came from China Milk Products Group, based in Heilongjiang, that produces bull semen and cow embryos for cattle breeders,

    The vast majority of the investors who bought US$150 million worth of convertible bonds China Milk sold through Deutsche Bank in December 2006 have exercised an option to get their money back, a person close to the agricultural company confirmed.

    China Milk’s net profit tumbled 73 per cent in the three months to last June compared to a year previously. The business was hit by last year’s tainted milk scandal on the mainland, which cut demand among dairy farmers for new livestock.

    Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned — and then there’s YaVaughnie Wilkins. • Virgin Mary Potato Chip

    A Boston woman claims she’s found a potato chip with what appears to be the image of the Virgin Mary on it.

    Jane Symington says she discovered the edible Virgin Mary lookalike while chomping down a bag of Lay’s potato chips on Friday afternoon. As you may recall, in December, an Arizona woman said she found the image of the mother of Christ in a pancake. Symington plans to put the chip on eBay.

    Heaven help us!

  • Run Windows 3.1 in your browser?

    win31Personal website are usually a train wreck. With the death of Geocities, the internet has become a better place, for sure, but generally speaking personal website are poorly programmed places were people put pictures of their cat and such. This is not one of those sites. Michael Vincent has created a personal site that emulates Windows 3.1 in your browser.

    Yep, you read that right. Win3.1 in a browser. Everything that was there on that desktop, including Minesweeper. Of course, it’s also a whole lot more stable then the original, and some of the icons take you into Michael’s personal website. Thankfully, you can’t run the old version of I.E. on the site, but you can shut down windows.

  • Report: NHRA to host first ever four-lane drag race

    Filed under:

    Your eyes do not deceive you – what you see above is four lanes of funny car action at the zMax Dragway in Charlotte, NC, built specifically for such shenanigans. That was just an exhibition run, but the National Hot Rod Association has announced that this year it will run 4-up racing in anger at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in two months.

    The zMax venue is like two traditional drag racing setups put side-by-side and separated by a retaining wall. The track’s chairman calls it “the Bellagio of drag strips,” All four classes, Top Fuel dragsters, Funny Cars, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle will run in quadruples throughout the three days of competition, from qualifying to finals. The new method will shorten the final elimination round to about 3.5 hours, but should up the excitement scale to make up for it.

    Top Fuel’s 14-time champion John Force called the coming event “our version of March Madness.” At 300 miles per hour. With lots and lots of smoke. Are we ready to think about christening 2010 The Year of Great Racing?
