  • Dual-circuit modulating brake valves

The VB020, VB0E0 and VB0F0 supply two operating pressures to the service brakes proportional to the pedal position: the pressure from the valve to the brakes increases, from zero when the pedal is released, to a preset pressure, as the pedal is fully depressed.

Dual-circuit protection: in the event of failure due to contamination or hydraulic hose rupture in either circuit, the VB020, VB0E0, and VB0F0 design enables continued safe operation of the remaining circuit. This insures against total loss of braking power due to failure of a single circuit.

Mechanically operated modulating brake valves for brake actuation
Supplies 2 output pressures (P1 and P2) for independent front and rear brakes.
Available with ratios* between operating pressures for symmetrical
or asymmetrical braking. Used with a dual-circuit accumulator charging valve (VB200 for example).

    VB020: ratio 1 (P2 = P1) , VB0E0: ratio 0.64 (P2 = 0.64 P1) , VB0F0: ratio 0.44 (P2 = 0.44 P1)

2010 RM Arizona Auction Thursday Night – Click above for high-res image gallery

RM continues to play a larger role in the auction weekend here in Arizona, adding an additional day of sales for this year that exclusively features British cars. That meant an evening full of saloons, drophead coupes and plenty of classic roadsters. And it’s spelled litre, not liter.

There were British cars from most of the major marques – AC, MG, Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls-Royce and, of course, Aston Martin. There were literally dozens of classic Aston Martins up for grabs ranging from a 1931 1 1/2-Litre International 2/4-Seater to a 1966 DB6 Vantage.

The most important car of the night, however, was a gorgeous 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT (above), one of just six lightweight models ever built. RM estimated that the car would sell for as much as seven figures, and it did just that with a hammer price (excluding auction fees) of $910,000. You can view our live photos in the high-res gallery below, and be sure to check back here for more coverage of the second night that will include the 1995 Ford GT90 Concept and the 1964 Shelby Cobra 427 Prototype.

  • Sri Lanka must halt pre-election attacks on political activists

Amnesty International has called on Sri Lankan political leaders to investigate attacks on activists during one of the most violent presidential elections in the last 20 years.

The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) said that more than 600 violent incidents had been reported until Thursday, including five murders and five attempted murders of political activists.
Police are investigating grenade attack on the home of Tiran Alles, a prominent opponent of the ruling party who has been receiving death threats for several months.

“These attacks highlight the prevalence of political violence in Sri Lanka even after the military defeat of the Tamil Tigers,” said Madhu Malhotra, Amnesty International’s deputy Asia-Pacific director.

“Attacks by paramilitary groups or thugs attached to politicians jeopardize prospects for a free and fair election.”

A number of NGO workers have spoken to Amnesty International about their fears over violence and intimidation ahead of the 26 January elections. Transfer of weapons from military sources (particularly army deserters) has led to an increase in armed crime including grenade attacks on political opponents.

Attacks have taken place in many parts of the country and supporters of various opposition parties. According to CMEV, supporters of the ruling party, the United People’s Freedom Alliance, have suffered 354 attacks, the largest number of incidents.

In eastern Sri Lanka, an area often receiving less media attention, the TMVP (Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal), has been accused by local activists and observers of ballot rigging, intimidation and violence in Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

The TMVP, a Tamil political party comprised of ex-rebels, is now engaged in electoral politics. The party has split into two factions led by men facing accusations of serious violations of human rights and the laws of war: Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan (alias  Karuna Amman), a member of parliament for the Eastern Province and Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan (alias Pillayan), Chief Minister of the Eastern Province.

”The government overlooked the atrocities alleged against these two men and brought them into the political mainstream, and now it appears unable to hold them to account,” Madhu Malhotra said.

“The unwillingness and inability to investigate and prosecute those responsible for violence gives carte blanche to armed groups or thugs to continue attacks”.

Abuses by paramilitaries are not the only source of violence. The role of armed groups who operate with the complicity of political candidates is a growing concern. For example, Amnesty International received reports that political organizers liked to the UNFP have been responsible for most of the preelection violence in the eastern district of Ampara

  • Chicagoans welcome Haitian adoptees

After an excruciating, nine-day wait, the new Chicago-area parents of five Haitian children raced onto a tarmac in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Thursday night to embrace the adopted additions to their families.

The climatic moment — at the end of a chartered flight that was delayed four hours — came after the parents had spent more than a week searching for a way to evacuate the orphans from Haiti’s chaos.

“It’s amazing, it’s a miracle and I don’t believe in miracles,” said Dr. Elaine Morgan of Skokie, holding 4-year-old Djoude, an HIV-positive girl that she had been trying to adopt for more that two years.

“I am on cloud nine,” Morgan said.

In all, 20 children arrived aboard the 30-passenger, twin-engine plane operated by IBC Airways, which had arranged to use one of its regularly scheduled landings into Port-au-Prince despite the turmoil in Haiti’s capital.

The Chicago group, joined by a number of other adoptive families from around the country, said that they were still a bit stunned that everything had worked out.

“I just can’t believe it,” said Kim Lewen of Willowbrook, thrilled that, after all the traumatic events, one of her two new Haitian-born daughters remembered her face. “(My oldest daughter) knew who I was. She smiled so big.”

In the days after the quake, the Chicago-area families — Lewen, Morgan, a Lincoln Park couple, and a Haitian-American couple — frantically tried to coordinate a rescue after learning that the orphanage housing the children was running out of food, water, and medication.

Their first attempts were thwarted. Some of the children were staying at the orphanage’s hilltop location outside Port-au-Prince. The capital was in shambles. All the necessary paperwork, which had taken months and in some cases years to complete, lay under rubble.

Eventually Chances for Children, an Arizona nonprofit that helps fund the orphanage, chartered the private flight, and got clearance to land, offering to bring in supplies, such as donated blood, water purifiers, food, and baby formula.

Although the State Department has discouraged private planes from flying into Port-au-Prince, the group’s president, Kathi Juntunen, defended the decision as best for the children.

The airline “just happened to know the right people,” Juntunen said.

“These kids are experiencing devastation and tragedy,” she added. “I just cannot imagine grouping them up and sticking them on a cargo plane. It sounds horrible and I don’t think it is right for the parents either.”

At home in the Chicago area, arrangements had been made quickly as the families scrambled to book flights to Florida. Lewen, who originally expected to welcome her two girls this summer, said she had been working nonstop to ready their room, re-arranging furniture and erecting a crib.

Lisa Gregg of Lincoln Park, who with her husband, had just started the adoption process, had been preparing her other children for the arrival of their new brother, Nelson, 3.

“Now life can begin. A real life,” Gregg said Thursday after she and her husband were re-united with Nelson, who they met for the first time last fall.

While relishing the moment, Morgan, a pediatric oncologist at Children’s Memorial Hospital, said that she still recognizes other struggles may lay ahead.

“There has been no time to prepare these children for coming from Haiti to Chicago, which is around 30 degrees right now,” Morgan said. “Ahead of us will be all the challenges of helping them to get over these traumas.”

  • Saudi Arabia must prevent flogging of teenage girl

Amnesty International has urged the Saudi Arabian authorities not to carry out the public flogging of a 13-year-old girl charged with assaulting a teacher at her school.

The teenager will reportedly receive 90 lashes in front of her classmates, as well as a two-month prison sentence, following her conviction at a court in the city of Jubail on Tuesday.

“King ‘Abdullah Bin ‘Abdul ‘Aziz Al-Saud must intervene immediately to ensure that the flogging sentence is immediately rescinded,” said Claudio Cordone, Amnesty International’s interim Secretary General.

“He must also take steps to reform Saudi Arabian law and criminal procedure to ban the use of cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment, in particular floggings of children.”

The full details of the charges against the girl, as well as the nature of the alleged assault, are currently unclear. However, it appears that the alleged assault occurred after the girl was caught in school with a mobile phone equipped with a camera. Such phones had been banned at the school.

The case follows a media report in December that the Minister of Interior had ordered that the flogging sentences imposed on an elderly woman and two men for khilwa in March 2009 should be carried out. Khilwa is the offence of being caught alone in private with a member of the opposite sex who is not an immediate family member.

Khamisa Mohammed Sawadi, a 75-year-old Syrian woman, and one of the men were sentenced to 40 lashes and four months’ imprisonment. The other man was sentenced to 60 lashes and six months’ imprisonment by a court in the town of al-Shamli, north of Riyadh.

“The criminalization of khilwa is a violation of the rights to freedom of expression and to privacy as set out in international human rights standards,” said Claudio Cordone.

“The flogging sentences imposed on Khamisa Mohammed Sawadi and the two men sentenced with her should be rescinded.”

Flogging is mandatory in Saudi Arabia for a number of offences and can also be used at the discretion of judges as an alternative or in addition to other punishments.

Sentences can range from dozens to tens of thousands of lashes, and are usually carried out in instalments, at intervals ranging from two weeks to one month. The highest number of lashes imposed in a single case recorded by Amnesty International was 40,000 lashes. They were imposed in 2009 in a case of a man tried on murder charges.

The use of corporal punishments such as flogging violates the absolute prohibition against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment set out in the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, to which Saudi Arabia is a state party.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture has stated that “corporal punishment is inconsistent with the prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

  • Meet Donald L. Kohn, Your New Federal Reserve Chairman*

    don kohn 1

Meet Dr. Donald L. Kohn. He’s currently Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board.

(*If Bernanke isn’t re-appointed, he takes over. And that’s looking more and more likely.)

Kohn was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. and earned a B.A. in economics and a Ph.D. in economics from Michigan.

His history with the Fed is extensive to say the least. Here’s his work experience, plucked from the Fed’s own website:

“Dr. Kohn is a veteran of the Federal Reserve System. Before becoming a member of the Board, he served on its staff as Adviser to the Board for Monetary Policy (2001-02), Secretary of the Federal Open Market Committee (1987-2002), Director of the Division of Monetary Affairs (1987-2001), and Deputy Staff Director for Monetary and Financial Policy (1983-87). He also held several positions in the Board’s Division of Research and Statistics: Associate Director (1981-83), Chief of Capital Markets (1978-81), and Economist (1975-78). Dr. Kohn began his career as a Financial Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City (1970-75).”

So, will Wall Street love Kohn like it loves Bernanke? Probably. Dr. Kohn has been described by FT as “Kohn the dove.”

Sixth-gen Suzuki Swift spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

Suzuki finally seems headed in the right direction: away from a lineup clogged with SUVs towards one chock full of fun-to-drive cars. The SX4 was a good start and the Kizashi, in our estimation, is a home run. But the brand that’s big everywhere else in the world has one car after which we’ve always lusted, the Swift. You may remember the Swift from back in the day as a rebadged Geo Metro (or vice versa), but that name carried on in other global markets where it was eventually affixed to the fifth generation Swift that debuted in 2004. Think of it as a poor man’s Mini.

While Americans won’t get to sample the fifth-gen Swift, Suzuki has indicated that the sixth-gen model currently under development will be sold in the U.S. And here it is in three-door guise.

It’s hard to believe that just ten years ago the U.S. market for automobiles was awash in trucks and SUVs, and soon we’ll be knee deep in a sea of small cars like the Ford Fiesta, next-gen Chevrolet Aveo and Spark and Honda CR-Z to name a few. You can add the Suzuki Swift to that list now.

  • The Smart Mac: Address Book & Mail

Apple’s original implementation of “smart” file management isn’t just limited to the Finder, and in fact, you’ve probably seen it more often in other applications like Address Book and Mail.

Here are some ideas of how you can harness the power of these two applications using the same idea as Smart Folders.

    Smart Groups

Address Book provides support for smart groups which allow for dynamic content, just like a smart folder. As new content is added that meet your guidelines, the group will automatically update.

Creating a Smart Group is as simple as going to File and selecting “New Smart Group…” or by clicking the plus icon (+) in the lower left corner of the Address Book window. Then give your group a name and set of criteria. As you add your second criterion, you’ll have the choice for your group to consist of any of your rules or all of your rules.

Here’s some ideas for useful smart groups.

    Upcoming Birthdays

Interested in who might have a birthday this month? Set the birthday criterion to include entries that occur within the next month. (This will include all birthdays within a month of the current date or when you click to view the group.)

    Upcoming Birthdays

    Missing Email Addresses

To see a list of people who you do not have an email address for, set the email criterion to include entries that are not set.

    Missing Email Addresses

    My Coworkers

Most companies offer their employees an email address that uses the corporate domain. If you created a smart group for “email” that contains “yourdomain.com” then you will have a group that is always updated with all of your coworkers. An extra bonus, these Smart Groups also show up and autocomplete in Mail.

    My Coworkers

    Or Anything You Want

Since the Address Book allows for a “notes” section on each card, you can use this region to “tag” cards and then use a smart group to show results based on that information. (You could also repurpose one of the other standard fields for this use.) For example, throwing the word “family” into the appropriate contacts’ card would allow for you to create a smart group that just showed your family members.

Currently, Smart Groups cannot be synced to iPods or iPhones. While they also cannot be synced through MobileMe to me.com or Windows computers, they can still sync through MobileMe to other Macs.

    Smart Mailboxes

Mail has its own flavor of smart file management too with the implementation of smart mailboxes. To create one, use the Mailbox menu or the plus (+) icon in the lower left of the message viewer and select “New Smart Mailbox.”

Give your smart mailbox a name and choose the appropriate criteria for your mailbox. With the ability to create criteria based on recipient, subject, mailbox, date, message, attachment and more, you can create some pretty powerful mailboxes to help organize your workflow. Here’s a few suggestions.

    Recently Viewed

Most people process tons of email on a daily basis and frequently people have multiple email addresses for different purposes. With all of these messages, is there an easy way to find that email you were looking at last night?

Sure! Create a new smart mailbox and select “date last viewed” and choose “is in the last” and specify a number of days.

    Recently Viewed

    Recently Sent

If I wanted to quickly find an email that I had sent recently, I could create a Smart Group that showed me messages in the mailbox “Sent” that were “date received” in the past 2 days. Also make sure you tick the “Include messages from Sent” checkbox.

    Recently Sent

    Emails from My Family

Remember the family smart group we made in our Address Book earlier? We can create a smart mailbox to show us all the messages from those family members.

Select “Sender is Member of Group” and then choose the appropriate group from the drop down menu.

Similar to Smart Groups, Smart Mailboxes do not sync to iPods or iPhones nor to me.com or Windows computers through MobileMe. They will only sync via MobileMe to other Macs.

Do you use Smart Groups or Smart Mailboxes? Have any tips you’d like to share? Share them in the comments.

  • Ron Paul on Haiti: Condolences YES, Occupation NO

    Statement of Congressman Ron Paul
    United States House of Representatives
Statement in Opposition to H Res 1021, Condolences to Haiti
    January 21, 2010

I rise in reluctant opposition to this resolution. Certainly I am moved by the horrific destruction in Haiti and would without hesitation express condolences to those who have suffered and continue to suffer. As a medical doctor, I have through my career worked to alleviate the pain and suffering of others.

Unfortunately, however, this resolution does not simply express our condolences, but rather it commits the US government “to begin the reconstruction of Haiti” and affirms that “the recovery and long-term needs of Haiti will require a sustained commitment by the United States….” I do not believe that a resolution expressing our deep regret and sorrow over this tragedy should be used to commit the United States to a “long-term” occupation of Haiti during which time the US government will provide for the reconstruction of that country.

I am concerned over the possibility of an open-ended US military occupation of Haiti and this legislation does nothing to alleviate my concerns. On the contrary, when this resolution refers to the need for a long term US plan for Haiti, I see a return to the failed attempts by the Clinton and Bush Administrations to establish Haiti as an American protectorate. Already we are seeing many argue that this kind of humanitarian mission is a perfect fit for the US military. I do not agree.

Certainly I would support and encourage the efforts of the American people to help the people of Haiti at this tragic time. I believe that the American people are very generous on their own and fear that a US government commitment to reconstruct Haiti may actually discourage private contributions. Mr. Speaker, already we see private US citizens and corporations raising millions of dollars for relief and reconstruction of Haiti. I do not believe the US government should get in the way of these laudable efforts. I do express my condolences but I unfortunately must urge my colleagues to vote against this resolution committing the United States government to rebuild Haiti.
