  • Target to spend $1B renovating stores

NEW YORK (AP) — Target is navigating turbulent economic times by polishing old stores rather than opening new ones and seeking growth in countries outside of the U.S such as Canada and Mexico.

The discount chain said Thursday that it will spend $1 billion renovating 340 stores while opening fewer than 10 new locations.

The renovated stores will offer more groceries as part of a shift in focus that the company announced last year.

It’s also developing smaller stores for urban markets. Target said it plans to test the concept within the next few years.

The chain, based in Minneapolis, has faced tough competition from larger rival Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer. Customers had turned away from Target’s “cheap chic” styles and toward retailers they believed were offering lower prices during the recession.

Quick maneuvers to change that view emerged in the form of better holiday sales as Target trumpeted its lower prices and expanded its selection of groceries, necessities that bring in shoppers more frequently.

Better-than-expected customer traffic boosted December sales by 1.8 percent at stores open at least a year. Analysts were expecting a 0.2 percent decline.

Target Corp. said earlier this month that it expects fourth-quarter earnings to “meet or exceed” analyst expectations of $1.11 per share.

Target’s growth plans are similar to the strategy reiterated by Wal-Mart last October. Wal-Mart told investors that its store expansion pace overseas, particularly in emerging markets like China and Brazil, would exceed domestic growth.

In the U.S., Wal-Mart is focusing on renovating its existing stores and building fewer and smaller but more efficient stores. Wal-Mart aims to use the smaller formats to further penetrate urban markets.

Target’s Chief Financial Officer Doug Scovanner and other executives will speak at an investor meeting Thursday in Philadelphia.

Target’s shares fell 22 cents to $50.50 in midday trading on Thursday, near the high end of its 52-week range of $25 to $51.77.

  • David Beckham Groped — Italian Reporter Grabs Beckham’s Manhood [VIDEO]

Victoria Beckham better watch out – there’s a maneating testicle-tugger stalking her husband. Italian entertainer Elena Di Cioccio has set her sights on David and won’t stop until she gets her hands on his Goldenballs! On Thursday, a video surfaced featuring the 36-year-old Di Cioccio molesting poor Becks in what the British are calling a “testicle sex attack!”

“I want to find out how big his testicles are!” Di Cioccio is quoted as saying.

Beckham, who was speaking to press outside a Milan hotel, looked mortified and was led away by security staff.

Di Cioccio then reportedly ran down the street shouting, “E piccolo, Beckham,” which translates as “Beckham is small.”

  • Rumormill: 2011 BMW M3 coming with Competition Package

BMW M3 GTS – Click above for high-res image gallery

As far as we can tell, there’s little if anything wrong the E92 M3. However, according to a post on Bimmerfile, that small point will not be stopping BMW from offering a Competition Package on 2011 models. What goes into a Competition Pack? We’re not certain, and Bimmerfile can only speculate (bigger wheels, brakes, maybe). Knowing that much, we’ll join ’em. But first, a little history.

Way back in 2005, BMW began a Competition Package for the E46 M3. Included were upgraded wheels, larger brakes, stickier tires,a firmer suspension and a revised Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system identical to the one on the hardcore M3 CSL. In addition, the E46 M3 Comp Pack also came with a quicker steering ratio. Inside, a bit of fussing took place in the form of Alcantara steering wheel and hand brake coverings and the steering wheel saw a few buttons (multi-function controls and cruise) deleted in favor of a DSC M button.

Will the E92 Competition Package feature similar upgrades? Hard to say, but we’ll guess yes. For their part, Bimmerfile is speculating that larger wheels and brakes will be part of the package (at least), along with an upgraded interior. The E46 Comp Pack added about $4,000 to the price of the M3. You can be certain that this number will increase when the new package drops. Is there any chance that the Competition Pack will offer a few of the goodies found on the hardcore M3 GTS (pictured above)? Once again, maybe. Improved wheels, brakes and tires being the safest bet.

One curious note: there’s a 7MA option pack attached to the Competition Package code (ZCP) that might simply mean a manual transmission option, or (according to Bimmerfile) could be an upgraded exhaust system good for a few ponies more. We’ll keep you posted, though we should get some clarification right around Geneva.

  • Twitter apartment mold libel suit dismissed

A judge Wednesday dismissed a libel lawsuit filed last year by a Chicago property firm against a tenant who complained about her “moldy apartment” on Twitter.

“Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it’s okay,” Amanda Bonnen wrote in her Twitter feed May 12 at 9:08 a.m.

Horizon Group Management, which leased the Uptown apartment to Bonnen, wasn’t pleased and filed a libel suit against her saying she “maliciously and wrongfully published the false and defamatory Tweet.”

On Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court Judge Diane J. Larsen ordered the case dismissed with prejudice, meaning that Horizon cannot refile the same case. According to Bonnen’s attorney, the judge felt the tweet was too vague to meet the legal standards of libel.

The offending message apparently rose out of a class-action suit filed in March after a contractor caused a roof leak that affected some units at 4242 N. Sheridan Road, then Bonnen’s home.

When it filed the libel suit in July, Horizon said in a statement that all grievances with tenants in the class action were resolved “amicably,” except Bonnen’s.

While responding to the class action, Horizon’s lawyers found Bonnen’s tweet and “acted to protect our reputation just as we would for any other related comment made in a public forum,” Horizon said at the time of the libel suit.

Bonnen moved out of the apartment at the end of June “of her own volition … at which time there was no mold in her
    apartment,” the statement said.

The last entry in her Twitter account was logged at 10:11 a.m. July 22, a day before Horizon’s filed the libel suit. The account itself is no longer online.

One of Bonnen’s lawyers said this morning the judge dismissed the case on the grounds that the tweet itself was too vague to fit the legal elements required to prove a libel case.

The tweet, said Leslie Ann Reis, “could be innocently construed. It could be construed as her opinion.”

“It mentioned Horizon Realty but it never specified whether it referred to Chicago or Illinois and knowing that Twitter is international, that could pertain to any company that uses the name Horizon,” said Reis, who is director of the Center for Information Technology and Privacy Law at John Marshall Law School.

That, she said, runs afoul of one of the elements required in proving a libel, that the plaintiff show the defendant made a false statement specifically about the plaintiff.

Another requirement is that the statement be published — which it was, via Twitter — but the third element asks the plaintiff to prove actual harm from the statement.

While the publication channel was novel, the legal grounding was not. “This was not a case about Twitter. This was a case about defamation. … The fact of the matter is that you have to meet all those elements” to prove libel, Reis said.

A lawyer for Horizon did not immediately return a call for comment. By law, the plaintiff has 30 days to appeal the judge’s ruling.

Reis said the center took on Bonnen’s case pro bono and was assisted by a group of law students and attorneys Richard Balough and Jeff Sobek.

  • Charges dropped in Craigslist stolen dog case

Charges were dropped today against the St. Charles woman accused of stealing a dog and trying to sell it online

Kane County prosecutors said they lacked the evidence to proceed with theft charges against Jennifer Aviles, 26, who said she believed the dog was a stray when she found it on a St. Charles street last month.

“Whether her statement is true or not – about thinking the dog was a stray – we’ll never know,” Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Sims said.

But since the German Shepherd didn’t have a collar and wasn’t in a yard, it would have been difficult to prove Aviles intended to steal the animal, Sims said.

Aviles declined to comment as she left court.

She was charged Dec. 9 with misdemeanor theft after the dog’s owner was alerted to an ad on Craigslist.com, which sought to sell the dog for $150. St. Charles police tracked the listing to Aviles.

Aviles said last month that she saw the dog as she drove to work Dec. 7 and thought — based on the dog’s thin appearance and lack of a collar — that it was a stray. So she placed the dog in her car and drove off.

A day later, Aviles said she found a home for the dog and said she gave it away for free. After she was contacted by police, Aviles returned the dog to its rightful owner, who decided to press charges.

The $150 asking price online was intended to weed out non-serious offers and deter dog-fight fans and animal researchers, Aviles said. But police said it showed intent of theft.

  • Amazon bringing apps to Kindle with Kindle Development Kit

    Kindle Development Kit

is getting into the apps game, with “active content” coming to the later this year with the announcement of the Kindle Development Kit (KDK.) You’ll be able to download these apps wirelessly using the Kindle Store once they launch, and we already know that there are some devs that are already hard at work on their Kindle active content.

Amazon says it has already released the Kindle Development Kit to a select number of partners, including the video game giant Electronic Arts, and will make it more widely available when a limited beta period starts next month. It anticipates formally adding what it calls “active content” to the Kindle store sometime later this year.

Some are seeing this as a reaction to the many, many new ereaders that we saw debut at , while others think it is a preventative measure to take some steam out of whatever it is that Apple will be announcing next week at the January 27th Apple Event. Regardless of what it is, having more value added to a device is never a bad thing.

  • 2 charged with bribery in shooting of 4-year-old boy

Relatives of a man accused of shooting a 4-year-old boy earlier this month while aiming for his father have been arrested for trying to bribe the father to not cooperate with the police investigation.

Vincente Herrera, 62, of Lincolnwood, and Hector Herrera, 36, of the 4300 block of North Francisco Avenue in Chicago, were each charged with bribery and communication to a witness, both of which are felonies, Chicago police said this morning.

The elder Herrera is the father of 26-year-old Juan Herrera, who is accused of shooting the boy near Belmont and Long avenues on the Northwest Side Jan. 6. Hector Herrera is Juan’s brother.

Juan was charged in the shooting with aggravated battery of a child with a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharged of a firearm from a vehicle and aggravated discharged of a firearm from a vehicle near a school.

Abut 7:20 p.m. Jan. 6, the boy was sitting in a car with his father when a dark-colored vehicle approached, police said.

The boy’s father had an argument with Juan Herrera earlier that day, police said. Police said Herrera got out of his car and displayed a handgun. The boy’s father tried to drive off when he saw Herrera, who then opened fire, police said.

A bullet entered through the vehicle’s rear window and struck the boy in his leg, police said.

Police allege that the suspect’s father and brother tried to bribe the victim’s father, the target of the shooting, not to cooperate so that authorities would be forced to drop the shooting charges.

The victim’s father alerted police, who eventually arrested Vincente and Hector Herrera.

The two are scheduled to appear in bond court later today.

  • Haiti Has Become Ground Zero For Brazil To Flex Its Muscle Against The US

    brazil jet

Brazil military leaders have preemptively refused to relinquish command of the UN mission in Haiti, in face of a planned influx of more than 10,000 U.S. troops.

The country that commands the mission will control a large and ongoing international military effort, according to Al-Jazeera columnist Gabriel Elizondo.

Whether or not America wants or can afford another military commitment, taking command in Haiti signifies continued leadership in the western hemisphere. That claim was central to America’s rise to global hegemon, as expressed in the Monroe Doctrine.

If Brazil maintains command, the rising power can claim military leadership of all Latin America. France, which is also a traditional power in Haiti, has not contested mission command.

Already the turf war has played out in tension over plane landing rights.

    Al-Jazeera:

Three Brazilian planes loaded with supplies were held up and not allowed to land in Haiti by the FAA (America’s agency that handles air traffic, which is now in control of airspace in Haiti). Celso Amorim, Brazil’s foreign minister, apparently was so upset about it that he put in a call to Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, and asked that Brazilian aeroplanes be given priority over chartered flights.

I imagine Brazilian commanders were thinking to themselves: “How dare the US hold up our planes – we run the UN forces in Haiti!”

  • CHART OF THE DAY: It’s Going To Be Brutal Putting The Banking Genie Back In The Bottle

    button more charts
button chart prev button chart next

After the financial crisis, we all felt like we learned our lesson. Sure, banking got way out of control, but now we know better, so we’ll keep it under control going forward.

We’ll turn back the clock on our banking rules and it will be just like the good old days.

But here’s the problem: Once you’ve let the banking genie out of its bottle, what makes you think it’s so easy to put back in?

Take a look at the chart below.

The amount of Global Banking Assets simply exploded higher from 2002 to 2008, far in excess of the world economy’s GDP growth. Yet to try and make all of these ‘excess’ assets, i.e. this liquidity boom, disappear in an orderly fashion would be a project on a level of complexity probably nobody in the entire world can even fathom. Keep in mind someone owns each and every financial asset out there and they won’t simply want give up their assets arbitrarily while their neighbor gets to keep his. Central banks have their tools to reduce liquidity, but these tools work sort of like hand grenades, thus can destroy the economy if used too leisurely.

So good luck trying to put this genie back into its bottle:

9ff GTurbo – Click above for high-res image gallery

There’s a fine line between a sportscar and a supercar. Porsche is one of the few automakers that straddles the line, but an elite cadre of tuners seem to take pleasure in laying down strips of burnt rubber to blur it beyond recognition. Names like Gemballa and Ruf come to mind, but 9ff has emerged as the new power player, in one sense or another. And the German tuning house has just let its latest out into the world.

Called the GTurbo, what we’re looking at essentially is a tuning program for the 911 GT3 and its even more extreme brother, the GT3 RS. Bolting on a pair of turbochargers, 9ff can take a GT3 up to 750, 850 or even 1,000 horsepower. That’s Veyron-league power, only without the all-wheel drive, the ground-grabbing track and the aero designed to go with it. Fortunately, 9ff has part of the answer in the form of a corresponding kit, including new bumpers front and rear, side skirts, and new quarter panels, with extra vents all around to keep the intercooler breathing and the air flowing. In full-fat 1,000hp spec, 9ff says its GTurbo will hit 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in a scant 2.9 seconds and, theoretically at least, hit 392 kilometers per hour (243 miles per hour) flat out – which may seem like a heck of a claim until you realize that one of their own modded 1,000hp 911 Turbo hit just that at the Papenburg test track.

The aero kit sells for 8,900 euros (~$12k), with five-spoke 19-inch rims for 4,980 euros (~$7k) and a specially-designed set of central-locking wheels for 5,950 euros (~$8k), all before taxes and painting. We’re afraid to ask how much the turbos cost, though. Details in the press release after the jump and photos in the gallery below.
