  • YouTube launches opt-in HTML5 video player

YouTube has just launched a new experimental HTML5 video player, which would replace their Flash player for supported videos. Flash has long been seen (with good reason) as a resource hog, so switching to the HTML5 browser should show a dramatic performance increase. One user reported a resource drop of over 50% when using the HTML5 player when compared to the Flash version. You can get in on the action, as long as you are using either Google Chrome or Safari 4.0 or above (although we’ve heard that it also works with recent versions of Firefox.) The only catch here is that videos with ads, annotations, and captions will still play in the older Flash player, and you won’t get fullscreen support. Of course you can try it out, and if you don’t like it, you can just turn it off.

  • The Great Stalacpipe Organ

    Luray, Virginia | Subterranean Sites

Deep in the Luray Caverns of Virginia sits the largest musical instrument in the world. The Great Stalacpipe Organ appears at first to be a normal looking organ, but instead of pipes, the organ is wired to soft rubber mallets poised before stalactites. When the keyboard is played, the entire subterranean landscape becomes the instrument.

In order to achieve a precise musical scale, the chosen stalactites of the organ range over 3.5 acres, but due to the enclosed nature of the space, the full sound can be heard anywhere within the cavern. The organ was invented and built in 1954 by Leland Sprinkle, a mathematician and electronic scientist. It took him over three years to complete it.

rexcondo.JPGFormer Bears quarterback Rex Grossman has taken a major loss on the sale of his 36th-floor condominium unit in Trump International Hotel & Tower, unloading it for $2 million.

Now calling plays for the Houston Texans, Grossman, 29, closed on the sale of the 3,437-square-foot unit Wednesday. The buyer is not yet identified in public records.

Grossman purchased the two-bedroom Trump unit in September 2008 for $2.681 million. Less than a year later, after the Bears informed him that he was not in their plans for 2009, Grossman signed with the Texans and then placed the unit on the market for $2.349 million.

  • Baccalaureate Community Colleges Help Fill Unmet Needs, Community College Times

    By Garry Boulard

Nearly four years after the Washington state legislature passed a law allowing the state’s community college system to offer baccalaureate programs, Bellevue College has more than 60 students enrolled in two separate bachelor’s degree programs and has already seen its first graduating class.

“It has all worked out very well,” said Bellevue President Jean Floten regarding an idea that took root after a board member of the college, who was also a high-tech employer, said there was a growing need in his field for four-year graduates.

“This was the same thing we heard from other employers who were talking about the need for a new kind of degree, where people would come to them job-ready with a four-year background,” Floten said.

In response, the college applied to Washington’s Board for Community and Technical Colleges to be one of the first community colleges in the state to offer a four-year degree.

“When the pilots (demonstration programs) were created, there really was not a lot of controversy,” Floten said. “The branch campuses of the universities were desirous of admitting freshmen, and we were desirous of offering an upper division, so there was kind of a trade that was done in the name of providing greater services to students in the state.”

Today, there are seven community colleges in Washington that offer four-year degrees, while Bellevue has added an interior design program to its initial radiation and imaging sciences baccalaureate program.

    A national trend

Bellevue’s embrace of four-year degrees represents a larger national trend that is seeing community colleges across the country increasingly getting the authority to award bachelor’s degrees, said Beth Hagan, executive director of the Community College Baccalaureate Association (CCBA).

“It’s all about meeting unmet needs,” she said, noting that 17 states—including New York, Texas and Florida—currently allow for community colleges to offer a variety of four-year degrees.

“In every state, universities are first asked if they would like to provide an applied workforce degree, a bachelor’s of arts degree, and most of the time they respond by saying ‘No, that this is not what we do,’” Hagan said. “So this has left it to the community colleges to fill the void.”

There are many initiatives going on right now that are moving several community colleges in the direction of offering four-year degrees, and the process varies from state to state, said Hagan, adding that CCBA also supports improved articulation agreements between two-year and four-year colleges, greater distance learning services and improved access at the community college to a bachelor’s degree via on-campus university centers.

    Partnering with four-year institutions

In Illinois, Harper College in November announced its partnership with Northern Illinois University (NIU) to provide a four-year degree in applied management with an emphasis on public education.

The partnership is an important opportunity for everyone in public safety management—police, public safety and EMS, said Harper President Kenneth Ender.

“Those folks enter into those careers with associate degrees that we provide, but then in order to move into supervisory positions and management and more leadership roles, they really need a four-year management degree,” he said.

The announcement of the Harper-NIU partnership came after the community college considered offering a four-year degree program itself.

“We were willing to do that if we couldn’t find a partner to accommodate the needs of the students, with respect to both the courses and the architecture of the delivery system,” Ender said.

Oakton Community College (OCC) in Illinois has also signed a partnership agreement with NIU, which Tom Hamel, vice president for academic affairs at the college, called “nothing less than groundbreaking.”

“For students, our partnership with NIU is good because while most four-year institutions will accept an associate of arts or associate of science degree as a transfer degree, it has been unpredictable as to whether or not a transfer institution will accept an associate of applied science degree,” Hamel said.

But through the partnership, NIU and OCC are discussing applying the AAS toward a four-year degree, including public safety, Hamel said.

“That’s a very good thing for our students,” he said.

A similar partnership was crafted in 2006 between Maryland’s Harford Community College (HCC) and Towson University to develop a seamless community college-to-university transfer of credits, with an emphasis on math, science and education. But Towson, which has subsequently signed similar transfer agreements with all of Maryland’s community colleges, has also agreed to build a campus on land owned by HCC, adjacent to the two-year college’s Bel Air Campus.

It was during a conversation with Towson President Robert Caret that HCC President James LaCalle suggested that the two institutions further cement their ties by having Towson construct its own building on the community college campus. (HCC has had a regional higher education center since 1995. Currently, six institutions offer bachelor’s and master’s programs, and even a doctorate program, through the center.)

“We ended up talking to people in the community who very much liked the idea and have since signed a memorandum of understanding between our two colleges,” LaCalle said. “We have already selected an architectural firm to design the building and hope to break ground this coming August.”

The operating principle behind the university/community building project is to increase higher education access to residents of northeastern Maryland, LaCalle said.

“We are not going to be offering four-year degrees at our school, and we are not trying to become a four-year college,” LaCalle noted. “Even before Towson announced it was going to construct a building here, I made it very clear that we did not want to become a four-year school. We want to be a really good community college, which is what I think we are.”

    At odds over ‘mission creep’

That emphasis on keeping the missions of the four-year and two-year institutions separate has dominated the debate in Michigan in response to a legislative proposal to allow the state’s 28 community colleges to offer bachelor’s of arts degrees in four applied areas: maritime technology, concrete technology, the culinary arts and nursing.

“There was opposition to the idea initially and there continues to be opposition,” said Michael Hanson, president of the Michigan Community College Association. “The four-year schools are fighting the proposal hard, and I would think that by the time it gets to the House floor, there will be a number of no votes.”

The reason for the opposition, which is spirited in part by the President’s Council of the State Universities of Michigan, is a concern that the state’s community colleges may be slowly inching towards becoming four-year institutions.

“They talk about mission creep,” Hanson said. “But this has nothing to do with that. It is about limited programs in certain parts of the state where access is currently not available for a four-year degree, particularly in the northern part of the state.”

“Besides, the University of Michigan is not going to put together a four-year concrete technology program,” Hanson added. “But it would make sense for Alpena Community College, which already has a world-class concrete technology program, to do so.”

Until the Michigan legislature takes a final vote on the matter, Hanson says two-year colleges supporting the move will continue to educated residents and lawmakers on the purpose of offering four-year degrees in certain areas.

“Once you talk to people who are initially opposed to the idea about what it is you are trying to do, many of them come around,” he said.

That same approach worked in Texas, where three community colleges have now been authorized to offer baccalaureates, said Martha Ellis, a former president of the Texas Association of Community Colleges.

“There was a lot of concern that the community colleges were diluting their mission, and that if they went the baccalaureate route, they would forget their mission altogether and no longer serve the community in the way that was intended,” she said.

But two-year colleges countered that the four-year degrees they wanted to offer were in applied technology programs, and that was very much a part of the community colleges’ mission,” said Ellis, who currently serves as the associate vice chancellor for community college partnerships with the University of Texas System.

“The legislature agreed, and since the four-year programs ended up being fairly limited in scope, most people have been satisfied. I have not heard anything negative,” she said.

Approaching the 2010 Lincoln MKT for the first time is like meeting a blind date. You’ve been told by friends she has a good personality, which immediately has you wondering what she looks like. From a distance you see your fears confirmed: She’s a big girl with a toothy grin and a weird hump. If super models are your thing, you’ll be disappointed by this three-row crossover sitting alone in the corner with a red carnation in her hair. But if you meet her with an open mind, you’ll find that a good personality goes a long way.

It’s our job to go on blind dates with vehicles before you do, and despite the MKT’s controversial design, we’re glad we sat down and got to know her. Now, if you can’t get over seeing a beached whale in your driveway every morning, stop reading; no twin-turbo direct-inject V6 engine, advanced infotainment features or luxurious appointments will change your mind. We’ll agree to disagree and you’ll probably pass judgment on the MKT from afar, not even giving it the courtesy of a test drive before shacking up with that German model. Will you regret not getting to know the MKT like we did? Read on to find out.

  • You Could Not Make It Up: UN Climate Change panel under fire after Himalayan glacier claim by Ben Webster, The Times

Article Tags: Himalayan Glacier Data, You could not make it up

“The IPCC reports underpin every country’s decisions about climate change. If the panel cannot be trusted, it becomes much more difficult to justify the global effort to cut greenhouse gases. That is why it is vital to place the allegations against the IPCC in context. While it is alarming that none of the 2,500 scientists who contributed to its 2007 report spotted the error, this is explained partly by it appearing in a single sentence on page 493.

Climate sceptics around the world have spent two years scrutinising every claim made by the panel. So far they have identified one serious error; it seems unlikely that they will find many more. The IPCC should now re-check all the sources of statements in its report, but this process will not alter its conclusion that man-made emissions are very likely to be the main cause of global warming.”

  • Question of the Day: 2012 Ford Focus or 2011 Chevrolet Cruze?

Two of Detroit’s big three are preparing to heat up the compact segment within a year with two new additions. During the third quarter of 2010, General Motors will bring the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze to the market. The 2011 Cruze will be available in three trim levels including the LS, LT and LTZ. The LS and LT will be powered by a 1.8L 4-cylinder making 136-hp, while the LTZ will be powered by a 1.4L 4-cylinder turbo making 138-hp. The Cruze is estimated to get an EPA rating of 40 mpg on the highway. All Cruze models will come standard with a 6-speed manual with a 6-speed automatic available as an option

A couple months after the Cruze makes its market debut, the 2012 Ford Focus will arrive in early 2011. Trim-level details are being kept under the wraps for now but we do know that the 2012 Focus will carry a 2.0L DI Ti-VCT 4-cylinder making 155-hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. Ford expects fuel-economy gains of more than 10 percent. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual as standard and a 6-speed automatic as an option.

So, with that in mind, and imagining that you’ll be in the market for a compact vehicle when both models hit dealerships, would you go for the 2012 Ford Focus or the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze?

Let us know your answer in the comments section below.

  • Putin Approves Waste Discharges into Lake Baikal

Environmentalists contend that pollution from the paper mill is the biggest threat to the lake’s biodiversity.

    Lake Baikal Siberia Russia

A decree signed last week by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will allow a paper mill on the shore of Lake Baikal to resume dumping sewage and waste water into the lake, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The decree removes waste discharges from the production of pulp and paper from a list of banned activities adopted in 2001.

The Baikalsk Pulp and Paper Mill stopped operations in October 2008 after environmental authorities ordered the mill to install a closed-loop water system, which would have eliminated wastewater discharges. The company decided the regulations made the mill unprofitable and shut it down in February 2009, causing massive unemployment in the mill town of Baikalsk, the WSJ reports.

The mill’s majority owner is Oleg Deripaska, the richest man in Russia until the global financial crisis began two years ago. Critics of the deal argue that Deripaska leveraged his influence with the Russian government to get pulp production removed from the list.

The prime minister’s press secretary denied that Putin was pressured by Deripaska’s interests, according to the WSJ.

“The only interests we can speak about protecting,” he said, “are the interests of the 16,000 people in Baikalsk, whose lives depend almost entirely on that mill.”

Though Lake Baikal, which holds one-fifth of the world’s unfrozen freshwater, is protected by the UNESCO World Heritage, the Worldwide Fund for Wildlife thinks the water body is still in jeopardy.

“Restart of the mill is being regarded as a necessity to preserve the jobs,” said Igor Chestin, WWF Russia Director, in a press release. “However, the resumption of its work will mean that Russia violates its obligations as one of the signatory party of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.”

“The new resolution weakens the protection level of the World Natural Heritage site. It means that when a mission of the World Heritage committee could come to Russia and in the future Lake Baikal would be given a status of a World Heritage site under threat.”

  • Netflix Exec Claims That Delaying Movie Rentals For A Month Benefits Customers

With Netflix caving in to Warner Bros. and agreeing to delay offering DVDs for 28 days after release in order to get movies to stream online, it certainly pissed off a bunch of Netflix subscribers. But, you’ve apparently got it all wrong. A Netflix exec is now trying to explain how the deal is pro-customer because it will keep demand down for the DVDs, meaning that when they finally do come out, you may have a better chance to rent them. Seriously:

The most practical reason is that the savings derived from this deal enable us to be in stock completely on day 29. Remember that we’re a subscription service and the way that you manage the economics of a subscription service is to manage the demand of any disc, depending on the economics of the disc. In the case of the most expensive disc, which in this case is a Warner Bros. disc, purchased through a 3rd party, those discs were out of stock for far longer than 29 days for most Netflix subscribers.

So what were able to is create a deal with them that gave them a little open running room in terms of creating a sell-through window ahead of rental, for us, and hopefully that they’ll find enough value in that it’ll extend to other retailers and other studios will take note and it’ll extend across other studios as well. The net savings derived from technically creating a better customer experience have been redeployed in additional streaming content for all customers.

I’m still trying to parse this, but it really does sound like he’s saying that Netflix couldn’t handle the demand for new releases before, so by getting rid of them entirely, it may be able to handle them on the 29th day, since fewer people will care about renting that movie then. Now, you could claim that’s a better customer experience if you ignore the 28 days in which no one on Netflix can rent the movie (though they can get it elsewhere). But if you realize that you’re now taking away the ability to serve all of your customers for nearly a month at the point when their demand is likely to be the highest… well, that doesn’t seem very customer friendly at all.

  • Sony Ericsson Reveals Vivaz Cell Phone With 720P HD Video Recording

Sony Ericsson has confirmed rumors and detailed the Vivaz, a Symbian (S60, 5th Edition) OS device and one of their first phones with 720P HD video recording capability (with a dedicated video button on the phone). The phone will be available in Q1 2010 and be offered in Moon Silver, Cosmic Black, Galaxy Blue, and Venus Ruby colors. Sony Ericsson has also made sure that you can share your videos on the fly, with the ability to upload your videos to YouTube and photos to Picasa. The Vivaz features a beautiful 16 million color, 3.2 inch screen (16:9, 640×360). The camera included with the device is also pretty feature-rich, with an 8.1 megapixel sensor, 4x digital zoom, auto focus, continuous auto focus for video, and face detection for photos. Geo-tagging, image stabilization, smile detection, touch capture are also included for an optimal experience.

We’re surprised at how quickly this phone was announced, since the XPERIA X10 hasn’t even hit the US market yet and this may throw off potential buyers of that device since this has several features it doesn’t. However, it sure is exciting to see Sony Ericsson really hitting the groove with their hardware strategy by offering devices with such intelligent features.

The processor inside the device is also quite satisfactory at 720MHz. Other notable features include Bluetooth (A2DP for your stereo headphones), Wi-Fi, and a WebKit web browser. We were also pleased to see a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack, TV Out (at VGA resolution, and an included 8GB MicroSD card. The Vivaz also comes included with many applications, such as Facebook, Google Maps, Twitter, YouTube, Rally Master Pro, and SSX Snowboarding (what! I love this game) amongst many others.

We found a hands-on video by Sony Ericsson that shows off the device in a little more detail:

Battery life figures clock in at GSM/GPRS talk time up to 13 hrs, GSM/GPRS standby time up to 430 hrs; UMTS talk time up to 5 hrs 20 min, UMTS standby time up to 440 hrs. Video call time will last up to 2hrs and 30 mins.

  • [23] SOUTH SUDAN: Tension Builds as Peace Agreement Marks Anniversary

Analysis by Moyiga Nduru JUBA, South Sudan, Jan 19 (IPS) Sudan is at a crossroads. Its future looks grim. "Only a miracle can save it from disintegrating. The signs are already on the wall," says Khamis Lako, a petty trader in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

It's a far cry from the euphoria that greeted the 2005 north-south peace deal that ushered in a new era of optimism. The agreement, at least from the point of view of the north, offered the last chance to prevent Africa’s largest country from disintegrating like the former Yugoslav republics.

The Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), brokered by outside powers, ended a 21-year conflict between the Arab Muslim north and the black Christian south. According to human rights groups, more than 2 million people perished during the 1983-2005 war.

The fifth anniversary of the deal, is being commemorated on Jan. 19 in Yambio, the capital of South Sudan’s Western Equatoria state, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.

Even for skeptics like Lako, the deal CPA has produced some concrete results. "The guns have gone silent," he said. "People can now move freely, doing their business without harassment or intimidation."

The south has its own government, flag and a standing army – the former rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA). Virtually all northern troops have been withdrawn from the territory. The semi-autonomous region also maintains a string of liaison offices (embassies in all but name) in most key capitals of the world.

Right now, the north and the south only share nationality and currency – nothing else.

    Challenges ahead

Despite the progress made, Sudan’s challenges remain enormous. The peace partners, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) in the north, have yet to define the north-south border as it stood at independence in 1956.

At stake here is Sudan’s oil which straddles the north-south border, although most of it lies in the south.

Earlier this month NCP’s Ghazi Salaheddin, an advisor to President Omar al-Bashir, warned that the referendum on South Sudan’s independence, which is scheduled for January 2011, would lead to a new war if key issues such as the north-south border, nationality and responsibility for external debts of over $30 billion dollars were not addressed.

The NCP suggested recently that the estimated five million southerners living in the north would automatically lose their citizenship if the south opts for independence in 2011. The same would apply to northerners living in the south.

    Oil

Disagreements also continue over the oil revenue which the south shares equally with the north. The south complains of lack of transparency in the distribution of oil revenue. The north has rejected the allegations.

The north fears that an independent south will deprive it of the badly needed oil revenue. "Secession will leave the north in a difficult situation. Oil accounts for 90 percent of the north’s exports," said John Luk Jok, South Sudan’s minister of energy, at a symposium on 'Southern Sudan: Preparing for 2011 and Beyond’, in Juba on Dec. 5-6.

The north considers oil as a strategic commodity. "The north want their interests protected in a future independent South Sudan, or they’ll sabotage it," Elijah Malok, the head of the Bank of Southern Sudan, told the symposium.

Sudan's foreign friends are encouraging both the SPLM and NCP to start discussing the post-2011 arrangements.

"I believe that we need to come up with a process now so that we can work with the parties and the parties can work between themselves to come up with solutions on citizenship, on the north-south border demarcation, on the sharing of resources – and that includes the oil – grazing rights, the Nile waters," said Scott Gration, special envoy for Sudan, at a news conference in Washington on Jan. 11.

He added, "There’s so many issues that have to be decided that we cannot wait until the referendum is here, until the people have made their will known. It will be too late at that point. These must be done right now, and we’re encouraging the process to start and we are in constant communication with the parties to help them come up with a process and a methodology to get these talks started."

    Violence continues

One contentious issue which may unravel the fragile peace deal is the growing culture of ethnic conflict in the south. Since 2008, at least 2,500 people have been killed and 350,000 displaced from their homes by ethnic conflict and cattle rustling, according to a January 2010 report compiled by aid groups including the British charity Oxfam.

Prior to the outbreak of conflict in 1983, cattle rustlers used archaic weapons such as spears, and bows and arrows. But now they carry automatic assault weapons, particularly AK-47s.

Recent consignments, confiscated by South Sudanese security agents, are of brand new weapons.

The sources of these weapons remain an open secret, although the north has distanced itself from supplying them. SPLM secretary general Pagan Amum believes "the enemies of peace" are supplying the weapons to disrupt the referendum.

"The referendum must be conducted on January 9, 2011 as stipulated in the peace agreement," he told journalists in Juba.
