Instead of seeing the usual advertising, drivers in Moscow were treated recently to two minutes of porn, thanks to the handiwork of a hacker.

The explicit escapades were shown on a 27 foot billboard on one of the Russian capital’s busiest highways. The billboard operator blamed the incident on a hacker who swapped the commercial video clips for the porn.

Several motorists stopped and took photos of the billboard which are now winging their way around the internet.

  • Sony VAIO Z brings Quad SSD drive and dynamic graphics switching to Europe in March

Announced at CES with a “late Spring” availability, we just got word that the Core i7-620M pumpin’ VAIO Z series from Sony will be hitting Europe in late March. The Z’s biggest claim to fame is its ultra-fast Quad SSD, a rather unique Sony innovation that writes data in parallel to four SSDs (up to 256GB total capacity in RAID 0) at speeds up to 6.2x faster than typical 5400 rpm laptop hard disks. Sony also fits the Z with a hybrid graphics solution that combines 1GB of NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with Intel HD graphics allowing you to automatically (or manually) switch between “speed” and “stamina” modes… presumably without requiring a logout if we’re reading “dynamic” correctly. Rounding out the specs are 6GB of DDR3 SDRAM, 802.11n WiFi, integrated optical drive, and optional VAIO Everywair 3G mobile broadband module all stuffed into this 13.1-inch laptop with 1920 x 1080 pixel LED backlit display with 210 x 23.8-32.7 x 314mm and 1.43kg footprint. Power AND portability? Come give us a hug Sony.

  • Johnny Depp “Sexiest Man Alive” Title “A Joke”

Johnny Depp is still raising his eyebrows at earning People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” title – admitting he initially thought the honor was a “joke.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean star, now 46, was christened the world’s most attractive man in the lifestyle mag’s annual poll of entertainment’s most handsome stars. Depp previously scooped the award in 2003, but insists he doesn’t belong on the list, next to other double winners like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Richard Gere.

“That should be someone else, that confuses me beyond recognition. I don’t know how to react,” Depp told The Associated Press Monday. “I really thought it was a joke.”

  • WM7: Analysts jump on board, says Pink phone is coming in 2 months

zune-phone-mockup Feeling a bit left out, Jefferies analyst Katherine Egbert also felt the need to add to the Windows Mobile rumour mill, which has been very hot recently, with their own bold prediction.

Citing “industry checks” (or is that blog posts?)  she claims a Microsoft branded handset, in the same vein as the Google Nexus One, is set to be released by Microsoft in the next 2 months, either at Mobile World Congress in February or CTIA in March.

Apparently the Zune-like phone will run Windows Mobile 7 with an interface similar to to the ZuneHD UI, will be crated in partnership with a few OEM’s and will have at least a 5 megapixel camera and be capable of 720p video.

Egbert ads that the OS will include a Zune video store and music subscription and purchasing services and social networking apps like Xbox Live, Facebook and Twitter.

Interestingly Techcrunch has also spoken about a similar device, which appears to be more dumb phone than smartphone, also set to be announced soon.

A developer has told them Microsoft is developing an OS based on the “ZuneHD kernel” with very strict hardware and software specs, from screen size to RAM size to processor speeds. The OS can not run any Windows Mobile applications, and can only be programmed for in Silverlight and .Net. No background are allowed, and no system resources can be accessed either.  The device will come with a Microsoft software store with an easy approval process.

The device will also come with XBox Live functionality for gaming and messaging, and there is no expectation that this will be a business device.  The UI will be like the ZuneHD, but with phone controls build-in.

Commentary:  To us it sounds like this may be one and the same device, but not Windows Mobile 7 as we expect it, but rather a branch like the ZuneHD is at present.  At the same time it also seems rather like a dead end, and we wish Microsoft would roll everything together in one OS and device, rather than force users to choose if they want an entertainment of business device.

  • Vuzix Wrap Glasses Make Your Reality Even Better

    3AE358C9-23AB-49BE-80AC-EB5ED483DC88.jpg

If the real world is just too dull for you, you need what is known in the business as “augmented reality” glasses. These glasses – usually seen in a military context or on shows like “24″ – allow you to view the real world as well as computer generated imagery at the same time.

Vuzix, which makes high end augmented reality glasses for the defense industry now offers the Wrap 920AR for consumers. The glasses feature a 67-inch display as seen from 10-feet and a stereo camera pair that “looks” into the world, bringing mixed and augmented reality content to life.

With the Wrap 920AR, users can view the real-world environment and computer-generated imagery seamlessly mixed together, allowing video game characters to jump out of the TV and come to life in your living room. Magazines and books could have animated links that bring you back to the web in real time. Pretty cool, huh?

The stereo camera pair, each capturing 752 x 480 images at 60 fps, delivers a single 1504 x 480 side-by-side image that can be viewed in 3D stereoscopic video on the Wrap eyewear displays.

Sure, you’ll look a bit dorky wearing these glasses, but something tells me that hardcore gamers are not going to care.

The Vuzix Wrap 920AR is expected to hit stores in the second quarter of this year and will retail at around $800.

  • An easy and affordable way to enjoy DV camera videos with Popcorn Hour C-200

An easy and affordable way to enjoy DV camera videos with Popcorn Hour C-200

Recently my father met a big trouble. He has a bunch of AVI files off a miniDV cassette. When he played the DV footage with Popcorn Hour C-200, it seemed that Popcorn Hour C-200 can not work the DV format. Since the DV files have special commemorative significance, I decide to help my father solve it. So I tried all the possible ways to hunt an easy-solution to play DV with Popcorn Hour C-200. Hard work pays off. I found a good method to realize it, which is to convert DV files to Popcorn Hour C-200 workable formats through a reliable DV converter.

First, let’s view Popcorn Hour C-200.

Popcorn Hour C-200 is the most powerful and versatile member of the Networked Media Tank family. With Popcorn Hour you can stream or playback digital media content from a variety of sources, such as your PC, network-attached storage, digital camera or USB storage (Flash drive, HDD, DVD drive). Now it expands the ability to add a Blu-ray drive to turn your Popcorn Hour C-200 into a full-featured Blu-ray player. However, Popcorn Hour C-200 has its own limitations. It can directly play finished movies but raw footage like DV format. Therefore, it is necessary to convert DV to other supported format. Here I recommend you converting or encoding your DV files to C-200 at a high bitrate in MPEG-2 or AVC HD/H.264 which will convert your DV with excellent output quality but not lossless.

"Then, I will share with you the steps of converting DV to H.264 video (mp4) or MPEG-2 video (.mpg) via a good video converter or a good Mac video converter."

Preparation: Free download this video converter or Mac video converter here, install and run it.

Step 1: Click the "Add" button to add DV files into this DV converter program

Step 2: Select output format from the drop-down list "Format" as well as set location from the "Output". If not, the output files will be saved in the default path by automatically.

Here I just choose H.264 mp4 for an example.

If you want to combine or join several DV files into a big one, just tick the "Merge into one file" box to achieve it.

    Step 3: Set advanced settings

Click the "Settings" button, a profile window will pop up. From the profile, you can easily and freely adjust audio and video parameters like bit rate, frame rate, codec, size, resolution, etc.

Remember the bigger bit rate, the bigger file size.

    Step 4: Convert

Once all the settings are done, you can click the "Convert" button to start DV conversion. And all the conversion will be done in a little time for this video converter’s multi-encoding technology.

When you get the converted files from the destination folder, you can play then with your Popcorn Hour C-200 with ease. Or you can play your DV on other media players or portable devices by converting DV to those workable formats of your players with this reliable video converter.

  • “Avatar” Porn Parody “This Ain’t Avatar XXX”

One of the the highest-grossing films in motion picture history is about to get the porn treatment. James Cameron’s sci-fi epic, Avatar, will become a “blue movie” for real when the feature made into an X-rated parody by Hustler Studios later this year.

The adult film purveyors are planning a porn parody of box office blockbuster that will debut sometime in the coming months, Hustler said in a statement Monday. The news came a day after Avatar won a gong for Best Motion Picture at the 2010 Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles. This Ain’t Avatar XXX is among the DVD releases planned by the company this year, following the success of porn parodies of classic features like Star Trek, The Jeffersons, Beverly Hills 90210, and Saved By The Bell.

Having topped $1.6 billion in worldwide grosses, Avatar is within hailing distance of Titanic’s record of $1.84 billion, long considered unassailable.

    Bruce V. Bigelow wrote:

It’s that time of year when young analysts turn to thoughts of venture investments won and lost. We’ve got the early returns, and more details will shake out in coming weeks, so get a head start now.

—It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Venture investments in cleantech startups nationwide fell by 38 percent in the fourth quarter that ended Dec. 31, compared to the third quarter of 2009, according to ChubbyBrain, a New York firm that tracks data on high-growth private startups. Yet investments in Internet startups soared during the quarter. The overall amount of fourth-quarter venture capital investments declined to $5.5 billion nationwide, compared with $5.9 billion during the fourth quarter of 2008, but ChubbyBrain counted 687 fourth-quarter deals nationwide, the highest number in five quarters.

—On another front, funds flowing into U.S. venture firms by college endowments, wealthy individuals, and other limited partner investors fell by almost 55 percent in 2009, compared to 2008, according to Dow Jones LP Source. In San Diego, the private equity firm Capital Creek Partners of suburban Rancho Santa Fe raised $50.7 million in the sole funding that showed up last year.

SAIC (NYSE: SAI), the Virginia-based government contractor that was founded in San Diego, agreed to acquire cybersecurity firm CloudShield Technologies of Sunnyvale, CA. Since its founding in 2000, CloudShield reportedly had raised about $75 million from investors that include D.C.-based Paladin Capital Group; Foundation Capital of Menlo Park, CA; Fuse Capital of Palo Alto and Los Angeles; TPG Ventures of Fort Worth, TX, and San Francisco; and Tektronix of Beaverton, OR. The companies did not disclose financial terms of their deal.

—San Diego-based OpenCandy, which was founded by six ex-DivX employees in 2007, is growing fast and might consider raising a secondary round of venture capital later this year, according to CEO Darrius Thompson. OpenCandy, which now has 20 employees and is still hiring, raised $3.5 million in Series A funding in late 2008 from Bessemer Venture Partners, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, and some prominent individual investors. The company’s website helps to connect free software publishers and advertisers.

UCSD’s Rady School of Management has formed a new source of startup capital for San Diego entrepreneurs. The new Rady Venture Fund plans to make investments that range between $75,000 and $100,000 in a program that’s primarily intended to help MBA students at Rady learn the ropes of venture capital.

MeLLmo, the Del Mar, CA-based startup that created a mobile business intelligence application for Apple’s iPhone, said South Africa’s Vodacom has selected its Roambi app to provide real-time, critical business information to its workforce.

Using Life Technologies’ genetic analysis tools, SG Biofuels said it will be able to produce improved cultivars of Jatropha, a bushy crop the company is developing as a potential source of biofuels.
