  • Motorola Shadow “Could” be Nexus Two

A few weeks back we posted an article about an upcoming handset from Motorola called the Mirage (or Shadow).  At the time, we posited that the phone would likely be called the Mirage.  We’re hearing today that it’s leaning more in the direction of  Shadow and.  Further, it’s being rumored that this will end up as the Nexus Two.  Yep, we’re already talking about that.

Check out a couple of pictures that may or may not be fan renders which look like they could be descendant of the Motorola Droid/Milestone.  Although similar overall, the Shadow does have some subtle differences.  Take a look at the wrist strap and white keyboard and you’ll see (potentially) a nice new look.  Real or not, we’re somewhat intrigued by this handset.

  • AT&T fixes bug that logged users into random Facebook accounts

Okay, so we were under the impression that Facebook login credentials were a locally-managed affair, but it looks like almost anything can break when AT&T’s involved — according to CNET, the carrier just fixed “several problems” that had users logging into the wrong Facebook account from their phones. The issue was apparently related to subscriber identification numbers being mistranslated into bad URL session IDs, and AT&T says it’s taken some security measures to prevent it from happening again, while Facebook’s just shut off the automatic login feature that used the ID number entirely. Excellent work all around. Unfortunately, there’s also a pesky incident in Atlanta where someone was able to login to another Facebook account from an AT&T phone due to a bad cookie, but AT&T says that was an “isolated” case and that it’s “unclear how this cookie was set on the phone.” How very reassuring. Back to Friendster!

  • TokBox Rolls Out Paid Features

TokBox, the web-based video chat application, appears to be testing new paid features on its platform. Although the startup creates a great product that allows for multi-user video chat from the browser, TokBox faced hardships last year and was forced to fire 30% of the company’s total staff and shuffled the executive lineup.

TokBox is obviously looking to create a revenue stream with the paid features, allowing users to pay $9.99 per month to add moderation functionality for chats. So with the paid features, you can choose who can join your call, remove people from your call, silence the audio of participants, control who shares media on the chat, and distribute moderator controls to other members of a chat. It also appears that the startup will charge users if they want to add more than 20 people to an individual chat.

The startup recently added document collaboration powered by EtherPad, which was acquired by Google late last year. It looks like TokBox is formulating a business plan; which should make its investors happy. And this monetization comes at a time when the online video chat application space is heating up, with TinyChat (which is free) and others gaining popularity.

We’ve contacted TokBox for comment and will update with a response.

  • UK ISPs Get Tiny Safe Harbor For Hate Speech… Why Not Full Safe Harbors?

We’ve spent plenty of time discussing the importance of Section 230 in properly applying liability, and avoiding situations where angry individuals or organizations sue a third party service provider because they have deeper pockets and are easier to sue. However, most countries don’t have similar safe harbors (or, if they do, they tend to be much more limited). This is really unfortunate and can lead to significant chilling effects. Over in the UK, it looks like they’ve just updated e-commerce regulations to carve out a safe harbor for ISPs… but only related to hate speech. But it makes me wonder why carve out a special exemption for hate speech, and why not set up full safe harbors that say a service provider should not be blamed for the actions of a user?

  • Jay Leno Gets Serious About NBC Late Night Shakeup

On The Jay Leno Show Monday, the late night veteran turned serious about the Conan vs. Jay chaos shaking up NBC, telling viewers that he’d been doubtful about launching a primetime show but was prevented by NBC from going to another network instead.

Leno said NBC guaranteed him two years on the air, insisting that his show would excel against summer reruns. The program never made it that far. Earlier this month, the network pulled the plug on the poorly-rated Jay Leno Show after just four months on the air. Leno — who referred to Conan O’Brien as a “great guy” — said that he may be headed back to the 11:35 PM timeslot and that the details could be ironed out by Tuesday. NBC reportedly plans to put Leno back on The Tonight Show at 11:35 p.m. if Conan keeps up his refusal to move his show to 12:05 AM.

  • StyleFeeder Acquired by Time Inc.

    StyleFeeder Logo
    Wade Roush wrote:

[Updated, see below] Time Inc., the New York-based magazine publishing giant, has acquired Cambridge, MA-based personalized shopping site StyleFeeder in a deal that closed on Friday. StyleFeeder founder and chief technology officer Phil Jacob, who I reached at his home this evening, confirmed the news, which was first publicly reported just before 8:00 p.m. Monday by the Wall Street Journal.

An unnamed source in the WSJ report pegged the purchase price at an amount “well into eight figures.” Xconomy has not been able to confirm that claim, and Jacob said he was unable to comment on it.

Four-year-old StyleFeeder, which was backed by Lexington, MA-based Highland Capital Partners and Boston-based Schooner Capital, provides personalized shopping recommendations to visitors using a combination of techniques. For users who are logged into the site, and for whom StyleFeeder has some historical data, the company uses machine learning algorithms developed at MIT to recommend products rated highly by other users with similar tastes. For users who aren’t logged in, the company can still make useful recommendations based on users’ locations and records of products that are popular in their areas.

Last March, StyleFeeder branched out, announcing a partnership with Hachette Filipachi Media, the publisher of Elle and a number of other fashion, automotive, health, and hobbyist magazines, under which StyleFeeder agreed to provide personalized product recommendations directly to Elle.com visitors. The affiliate fees that accrue from such purchases are becoming an attractive revenue source for many consumer-oriented publications. Fran Hauser, a digital strategy manager for several Time Inc. magazines such as People and InStyle, told the Wall Street Journal that with the acquisition of StyleFeeder, Time Inc. will be able to “share in [the] value creation” when editors help to generate consumer demand for products.

It’s safe to say, in other words, that online product finders like this one that StyleFeeder created for Elle are likely to turn up on the Websites of many fashion-oriented Time titles, including InStyle. Whether StyleFeeder will be allowed to continue its partnership with Hachette Filipachi and other brands outside the Time Inc. empire remains an open question.

The WSJ report said an official announcement of the acquisition could come Tuesday. [Update, 8:30 a.m., 1/19/10: Time Inc. has just published a press release announcing the news. It indicates that StyleFeeder “will become part of the InStyle family of brands” and that it will power shopping on InStyle.com.]

Thanks to growing affiliate revenues and conservative management, StyleFeeder has been a cash-flow-positive business for some time, and had a strong holiday season. According to a source familiar with the company, the startup did not need to be acquired to stay in business, and was not actively seeking a corporate parent. “Somebody came along,” this source tells Xconomy.

That somebody was clearly Time Inc., the magazine group of media conglomerate Time Warner. In addition to People and InStyle, Time Inc.’s titles include magazines such as Fortune, Sports Illustrated, Health, Real Simple, Money, This Old House, Golf, and of course the flagship Time. The company claims that one out of every seven U.S. Internet users visits a Time Inc. website at least once a month. It has been actively exploring new types of online transactions such as digital magazine sales that could help to offset declining advertising revenues at its big-name magazines.

As a venture-funded startup, of course, StyleFeeder would eventually have needed to achieve some sort of exit. The company has raised $4 million in seed and Series A funding from Highland and Schooner. If the Wall Street Journal’s “eight figures” quote is correct—meaning Time has paid more than $10 million but less than $100 million—the acquisition represents a return of between 2.5x and 25x on the venture funds’ investment.

  • SageTV HD Theater Beta Update

It’s been quiet around the SageTV beta forums for the past month as they appear to be preparing for the next version of SageTV.  But it appears they still have some HD Theater extender/player goodness to throw our way while we wait.

The SageTV team has now released two new beta firmware updates for their popular HD Theater (HD200) Player/Extender.  Nothing Earth-shattering, but a few nice improvements/updates were included.  The most recent version adds support for NFS drives for imports and BD ISO support for the standalone player mode.  The beta firmware from earlier this month added some very cool music visualizations – check them out if you haven’t already:

    Beta Firmware Version "20100118 1"

    Core changes:

    1. Update rendering system (not sure what this means as of yet – but it sure sounds good 😉
    2. Fix playback of time-compressed 720p content
    3. Fix forced sub-picture decoding
    4. Fix invalid AVI parsing (won’t seek)
    5. Various specific file playback fix

    Media Player (Standalone) UI changes:

    1. Added support for 1080p option for YouTube videos.
    2. When modifying existing import paths in the File Browser, add paths before removing any to prevent removal of the mounted import path.
    3. Updated OSD’s handling of duration for BD media and added the "BD Title Select" option in the pop-up options dialog during playback of BD media.

  • With Mobile Giving To Haiti Passing $20 Million, Text Fundraising Comes Of Age

Screen shot 2010-01-14 at 5.41.53 PM

As the tragedy from last week’s earthquake in Haiti continues to unfold, the Red Cross and other relief organizations have now raised more than $20 million via text message donations, which is about 10 percent of the $210 million total raised so far. The text donations have been doubling at a rapid pace, from $5 million last week to $10 million to more than $20 million today. As more and more people pick up their phones and text “HAITI” to the number 90999, not only is a $10 donation to the Red Cross be added to their phone bill, but many of them are also experiencing mobile SMS payments for the first time.

James Eberhard is the CEO of Mobile Accord, the company behind the mGive Foundation which is coordinating the text fundraising efforts for the Red Cross. Mobile Accord has been running cause marketing campaigns for non-profits since the 2008 SuperBowl. He’s never seen mobile giving at this scale. “It is the biggest,” he says “Previously the largest was during American Idol when Alicia keys made a call to action that raised $450,000 through two calls to action over the course of three minutes.”

There are many advantages to mobile giving. It’s probably the fastest way to make a donation. You don’t have to write a check. You don’t even have to turn on your computer. It lowers the barrier to giving and opens the door to w whole new class of donors. When someone decides they want to give, they can do it immediately and get billed later. (The carriers, for their part, are trying to release the money as quickly as possible to the relief organizations). Eberhard notes that there are 270 million cell phones in the U.S., and they all can send text messages. For the non-profits, they end up getting funds faster and can begin to establish a direct relationship with the people who give.

As text donations become more common, they may also pave the way for regular mobile commerce payments. It’s like Paypal: sending money via text message might seem unnatural at first, but once you do it, the next time the option comes up it won’t seem so strange. The people texting money to the Red Cross this week will be more likely to text money to a business down the road. But for now, keep texting “HAITI.”

Here’s a list of different ways to text to help Haiti:

ext HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross
    * Text HAITI to 25383 to donate $5 to International Rescue Committee
    * Text HAITI to 45678 to donate $5 to the Salvation Army in Canada

    * Text CERF to 90999 to donate $5 to The United Nations Foundation
    * Text DISASTER to 90999 to donate $10 to Compassion International
    • Text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross

  • Hearst’s Social Shopping Site Kaboodle Gets A Realtime Makeover

Social shopping site Kaboodle, which was acquired by Hearst Interactive Group in 2007 for $30 million or so, is re-launching its site to upgrade its product-discovery engine that allows online shoppers to discover, search for, browse, and interact with the more than six million products.

Kaboodle is a free social bookmarking service and search product that allows you to discover and share e-commerce content. With the re-launch and re-design of the site, Kaboodle is becoming less content centric and more realtime and product and people centric.

The new version of the product-discovery engine allows online shoppers to search and discover products according to normal search terms, but also according to popularity amongst other shoppers in the Kaboodle community and consumers. The platform has upgraded search to be realtime and lets users see products that are most popular right now based on specific filters, such as items from a specific store, within a specific category, related items, and more. For example, a user can see what are the most popular items being searched on Nordstrom.com.

Kaboodle’s bookmarklet functionality which allows users to add products from anywhere on the Web is staying the same, but the site has made it easier for retailers to incorporate the bookmarklet on their own sites. Manish Chandra, co-founder of Kaboodle, says that the site will continue to make realtime improvements in the coming year, hoping to become the go-to destination for product discovery and sharing. Chandra says the site has over 1 million registered users and is seeing 8 million unique visitors per month, according to comScore. Launched in 2005, Kaboodle faces competition from ThisNext, Like.com and Sugar’s ShopStyle.

  • Shelby unveils 2011 GT350 Mustang at Barrett-Jackson

    2011 Shelby GT350 – Click above for a high-res image gallery

Coinciding with the 45th anniversary of the original 1965 Shelby GT350, Shelby American unveiled an all new GT350 Mustang at the opening night gala of the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, AZ. Presented in concept form, the new GT350 features a supercharged version of the brand new 5.0-liter V8 engine in the 2011 Mustang as well as performance upgrades from Ford Racing, Borla, Cragar, Baer and more.

Unlike the GT500, the GT350 will be a post-title upgrade available from Shelby. Customers can have their 2011 Mustangs shipped directly to Shelby’s Las Vegas facility to be converted or they can deliver the car themselves. Once in the hands of Shelby, each Mustang is fitted with a Ford Racing supercharger good for approximately 500 horsepower, a Ford Racing suspension system, Baer brakes front and rear, Borla exhaust system, Cragar wheels, and more. For the exterior, Shelby fits a new front fascia, front splitter, functional hood scoop tail light trim, rear deck lid filler panel and a rear fascia with center exhaust exit. White with Guardsman Blue racing stripes will be the only available color combination, which isn’t such a bad thing.

Of course, all of that comes at a price. Shelby lists the GT350’s MSRP at $33,995, which doesn’t sound that bad until you realize it doesn’t include the base car. With the 2011 Mustang GT coming in at just over $30,000, the total price of the GT350 will actually exceed that of the GT500. Does something similar to the Shelby GT built the last few years make more sense? Perhaps, but we’re sure Shelby will find quite a few buyers anyway. You can read all of the details in Shelby’s press release after the jump, and check out the new GT350 for yourself in the high-res gallery below.

  • Apple responsible for 99.4% of mobile app sales in 2009

The latest report from market research firm Gartner suggests that mobile apps are big business, and that business should only grow in the next few years. According to Gartner’s numbers, Apple completely owns this market, grabbing almost every one of the 4.2 billion dollars spent on mobile apps in 2009. Based on Gartner’s estimates and our own analysis, Apple could hold on to at least two-thirds of the market if current sales trends hold for 2010.

Apple first opened the App Store in July 2008, along with the launch of the iPhone 3G and the release of iPhone OS 2.0. Sales were brisk, with 300 million apps sold by December. After the holidays, that number had jumped to 500 million. Earlier this month, Apple announced that sales had topped 3 billion; that means iPhone users downloaded 2.5 billion apps in 2009 alone. Gartner’s figures show another 16 million apps that could come from other platform’s recently opened app stores, giving Apple at least 99.4 percent of all mobile apps sold for the year.

MWC is a few weeks away – it starts on February 15 – and we’re expecting to see a new version of Windows Mobile, version 7, to be launched with hardware soon to follow. We’ve heard some rumors about potential improvements over the current 6.x codebase, but a developer has told us that this new version is so distant from the old WinMo that it is almost unrecognizable. The worst part? It is completely non-backwards compatible, meaning all WinMo apps are about go extinct.

  • Using your iPhone in the city? Be careful!

I’ve lived in big cities for almost ten years now, first in Chicago and now in Los Angeles, and I could have told you exactly what this New York Times piece does: that you’ve got to be careful while using your iPhone while walking the city streets. We’ve heard about this before with the iPod, but an iPhone offers up even more distraction while walking around — in between checking email, jumping on Twitter, and/or playing any number of games, it’s practically impossible to spend enough attention on where you’re walking and what you’re doing even on a relatively clear street.

Think it’s a joke? Over 1000 people found themselves in emergency rooms in 2008 because they were distracted while walking, says the article, which is twice the number from 2007 and almost double the number from 2006 (and it’s probably gotten higher last year). That’s not to say that we need actual legislation to deal with this (although legislation has been discussed in New York, and there is already legislation on the books in many places against using your phone while driving), but it’s something to keep in mind: I put my iPhone away whenever I cross a street, and just plain stop whenever I need to do anything more attention-deserving than switch a song or up the volume.

And it only took me one close call with a moving truck to figure that one out. If you’re walking around with your iPhone or iPod in a busy urban environment, be careful out there.
