  • Admiral’s Row

Brooklyn, New York | Incredible Ruins

At the time of the Civil War, the southwestern edge of the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York was the site of Admiral’s Row, a gated community of Second Empire-style mansions occupied by naval personnel. Today, the Row is a series of dilapidated, abandoned structures and the subject of much heated debate between New York City officials and historic preservationists.

Also known as Officer’s Row, the eleven structures were built between 1864 and 1901. Home to high-ranking naval officers and their families, the compound included tennis courts, communal vegetable gardens and a stable that converted into an ice skating rink during winter months.

The base was decommissioned in 1966 but records indicate that naval personnel inhabited the homes through the 1970s. Since then, however, the structures have been abandoned and left in a considerable state of decay. Though Admiral’s Row remained under the jurisdiction of the National Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it has been the site of much vandalism and squatting over the past thirty years.

Locals walking down Flushing Avenue have witnessed the decline of the century-old mansions, now completely overgrown with weeds. Though severe weather conditions and multiple fires have led to the collapse of much of the interiors, a considerable amount of the homes still remain in good condition. Much of the original bathroom tiles, lighting fixtures, and grand staircases still remain intact, providing a small sample of the site’s rich historic significance.

In the past decade, however, the city of New York has acquired much of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and intends on converting it into an industrial park. Operated by the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, there have been plans to demolish all but two of the remaining structures to make way for a commercial complex.

Though the development company insists most of the homes are beyond repair, historic preservationist groups argue that at least half of the buildings are salvageable. Over the past few years, these groups have presented a number of alternative plans to better incorporate the historic structures into the new commercial complex. It remains to be seen if these plans will be adopted.

  • Chinese Cities set to order ban on smoking

    Quote:

To protect people from exposure to secondhand smoke, seven cities in China will take the first steps in creating legislation on stopping smoking at public venues and workplaces.

Under the project, jointly held by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease(UNION), the cities – Tianjin, Chongqing, Shenyang, Harbin, Nanchang, Lanzhou and Shenzhen will implement a smoking ban in public and in workplaces.

Currently, smoking is allowed in certain areas in public places, and experts said the enforcement of smoking bans is poor.

"This project would create strict legislation to guarantee 100-percent smoke-free public venues and workplaces and figure out a feasible and forceful working mechanism to enforce the smoking ban," said Wang Yu, director of China CDC at the project launch Friday.

"Only with the support of the pilot cities’ municipal governments and legislatures can the people there finally enjoy smoke-free environments," he noted.

The largest tobacco consumer worldwide, China has 350 million smokers, official statistics show. Also, 540 million non-smokers are exposed to the hazards of secondhand smoke.

Apart from 1 million smoking-related deaths each year in China, passive smoking causes around 100,000 deaths annually in the country.

"In that regard, the project, if realized, would help save millions of lives through lowering tobacco consumption and reducing secondhand smoking," said Dr Sinead Jones with UNION.

"The project would be scaled up to cover the whole nation in the future to protect more people from smoking," said Wang.

Xie Zhiyong, professor with the China University of Political Science and Law, said by weighing the benefits and risks of tobacco, the country should take bolder steps in smoking and tobacco control.

Official statistics show smoking costs the nation more than 252 billion yuan ($37 billion) each year in medical costs, fire and environmental pollution, far beyond the tax revenue generated from the industry.

"For smoking bans in public places, legislation comes first, with implementation the key link," Xie said.

At present, health administrations are in charge of enforcing smoking bans in public places, which are usually poorly staffed, according to Xie.

Besides, some local governments count heavily on the local tobacco industry as a major source of tax revenue, which as a result makes smoking more difficult to control, he said, adding that tobacco companies are all State owned in China.

Smoking control might be the first step towards tobacco control, which needs support from the decision maker, the legislature and the media, he added.

  • Chinese Now Buying More U.S. Assets Than Americans Buying Chinese

    hummer america arnold schwarzenneger california

Chinese purchases of U.S. businesses jumped 300% in 2009, vaulting past U.S. purchases of Chinese ones for the first time. Lower U.S. stock prices plus a weak dollar probably have a lot to do with this.

It’s interesting because we’re always fed the notion that China needs to buy more American things while the U.S. needs to buy less Chinese goods. Yet in fact the Chinese are buying things — long term assets (like the Hummer brand, shown with Arnie to the right), rather than the short term consumables so many Americans blow their money on.

USA Today: For the first time, Chinese investment in U.S. companies has eclipsed U.S. purchases of Chinese entities, a trend analysts say is fueled partly by depressed American assets.

In 2009, Chinese buyers snapped up $3.9 billion of U.S. assets, nearly four times the level in 2008, says Dealogic, a data-tracking firm. By comparison, U.S. buyers plowed $3 billion into Chinese entities last year, down 80% from 2008.

It’s too early to tell whether this pattern will hold. Chinese buyers represented only 3% of the $118.7 billion in U.S. foreign investment last year. Yet China ranked as the ninth-largest foreign investor in the U.S., and among the minority that increased its stake amid a sputtering global mergers-and-acquisitions market.

  • Internet Explorer Warning Hurts Microsoft in Europe

Just as Microsoft finally settled its browser issues with the European Commission, the software maker is standing by helplessly as European countries warn consumers not to use Internet Explorer because of a critical vulnerability. Microsoft has issued a workaround.

The warning comes after Google traced cyberattacks against U.S. companies to a remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability in IE. Microsoft investigated and determined that IE was one of the vectors used in targeted and sophisticated attacks against Google and possibly other corporate networks.

On Sunday, Microsoft said it is only seeing a “very limited number” of targeted attacks against a small subset of corporations. George Stathakopoulos, general manager of Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing division, explained that the attacks detected to date, including public proof-of-concept exploit code, are only effective against Internet Explorer 6.

“Based on a rigorous analysis of multiple sources, we are not aware of any successful attacks against IE7 and IE8 at this time. This is likely due to improved security protections provided by newer versions of Internet Explorer and Windows,” Stathakopoulos said. “In summary, we are not seeing any widespread attacks by any means, and thus far we are not seeing attacks focused on consumers.”

    A Possibly Escalating Threat

Despite the “very limited number” of targeted attacks, Microsoft pledged to remain vigilant about the evolving threat and urged customers to take appropriate action to protect themselves. Microsoft is recommending that users with IE6 or IE7 upgrade to IE8 as soon as possible to get improved security.

“Customers who are using Windows XP SP2 should be sure to upgrade to both IE8 and enable Data Execution Protection (DEP), or upgrade to Windows XP SP3 which enables DEP by default, as soon as possible,” Stathakopoulos said. “Additionally, customers should consider implementing the workarounds and mitigations provided in the security advisory.”

Stathakopoulos said Microsoft has teams working…

  • That touchable sensation: Apple sends invites for January 27 event

It seems like only hours ago, on the Talkcast, that we were discussing the notable absence of any invitations to Apple’s rumored end-of-January event. Where were they? Was all this hype nothing but a smokescreen? When would the word be given, flights booked, liveblogs scheduled and iPhones charged? What were we waiting for?

This, apparently. Engadget and The Loop are both reporting that they have their emailed invitations in hand for the January 27 introduction of… well, Apple’s “latest creation.” The invite has a spraypainted look, a time of 10 am Pacific and a place of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts — and not much else.

Who’s ready for something insanely great?

  • ICQ Returns: Combines IM With a Haphazard Twitter and Facebook Integration

icq7_logo.pngIn its heyday, ICQ was one of the most popular instant messaging networks. Today, you will probably have a hard time finding your friends on ICQ. Nevertheless, almost 2 year after the release of ICQ 6, ICQ just released a new version of its IM client. ICQ 7 now integrates updates from Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Delicious, Flickr and YouTube. ICQ plans to add support for more social networks in the near future.

    Sponsor

ICQ 7 is only available for Windows. Mac users can rest assured that they are not missing out on much.

Social Networks on ICQ: Haphazard Integration

icq7_facebook.jpgSadly, ICQ doesn’t excel at integrating any of these social networks. Facebook users, for example, can comment on status updates from their friends but there is no button to ‘like’ an item. Interestingly, you can ‘like’ your own updates but not those of your friends.

The Twitter client can display updates from all your friends on the service, but you filter this feed to just see @replies or direct messages, making ICQ 7 mostly useless as a Twitter client.

ICQ’s PR material stresses that “users no longer need to open a browser and log into each and every network they’re members in.” For any meaningful interaction on these social networks, you still need to open up your browser, however.

One of the few positive aspects of ICQ’s social network integration is that it allows you to post an update to all of these networks simultaneously.

One highly annoying aspect if ICQ 7’s installation procedure is that – by default – the application wants to change your default search engine to ICQ Search and install the ICQ toolbar. While ICQ Search is an inoffensive retooling of Google Search, we would prefer the company to be a bit more open about these changes. Currently, they are tugged away in the install dialog where users are likely to just click ‘next’ instead of doing a close reading of the dialog’s text.

Stay Away, Even If You are Feeling Nostalgic

Besides nostalgia, there aren’t a lot of good reasons to install ICQ 7 at this point. The social networking integration is haphazard at best. As an instant messaging network, ICQ has clearly seen better days. In an age where good multi-network IM clients like Digsby, Pidgin, Meebo or Adium can easily connect you to all your friends on every network, there really isn’t a need to install a single-purpose IM client anymore.

  • More Details on AT&T’s “Network Glitch” that Caused Compromised Facebook Security

On Saturday, an exclusive AP report told a story of an AT&T network glitch which allowed some mobile users the ability to login to other people’s Facebook accounts. Although according to the story only a handful of people were affected by this glitch, the security flaw could have “far reaching implications for everyone on the Internet,” wrote the reporter.

After reviewing the details of the incident, the “glitch” appears to be more of an issue with some misconfigured software at AT&T and less of an internet-wide security concern, as previously feared. That being said, the wireless company regarded the incident seriously and has taken measures to prevent similar issues from reoccurring in the future.

    Sponsor

Users Logged into Wrong Facebook Accounts

In the AP story, a mother and her two daughters, all of whom are AT&T subscribers, logged into the social networking site Facebook using their mobile phones and found themselves with full access to strangers’ Facebook accounts. This was apparently caused by a routing error on AT&T’s part notes the article. In this modern-day equivalent of “crossed wires,” it seemed the wireless company had lost track of which users were which and had sent back the incorrect web pages to the users’ phones. It turns out that the women were not alone in experiencing these issues – other AT&T customers were affected as well. However, AT&T won’t say how many, only that the problem occurred in “a limited number of instances.”

Over on the technology news website Slashdot, many speculated about the cause of incident, questioning whether it was a corrupted caching proxy at AT&T or a bug in the HTTP headers set by Facebook that instruct how a response should be cached, among other things. In other words, some weren’t taking it at face value that the problem was entirely AT&T’s fault, despite the fact that an AT&T spokesman claimed that the “network problem behind those episodes” was being fixed.

    Server Software Error to Blame

A recent statement from AT&T now reveals a few more details about the problem and what they’re doing to address it. According to Michael Coe, the same AT&T spokesman cited in the AP article, the issue was caused by a “server software connectivity error” which impacted some wireless customers logging into Facebook using AT&T subscriber information. Facebook users who signed up for the service using their mobile phones are able to login to the site using the phone number and password created during the sign up process, Facebook states in a Q&A on their Help Site.

Although Facebook would not comment on the original story, AT&T reports that they did work with the social network in determining the cause of the problem. As it turns out, those affected were logging into Facebook using their AT&T phone numbers as opposed to a username/password combination. Typically, when a username and password is used, a cookie is stored on the mobile device. This small file retains a user’s login credentials, allowing them to access Facebook without having to re-enter their sign in information. When a cookie is not available, the subscriber information is sent to Facebook.com automatically. This is what had taken place in the reported incidents.

No More Logins Using Your Phone Number, Says AT&T

AT&T reports that they’ve now put additional “security measures” in place to prevent a reoccurrence of this issue but won’t elaborate on what precisely those measures involve. In addition, the wireless company states they are working with Facebook to disable the use of subscriber information as a method for automatic login. That means going forward, AT&T users will no longer be able to use their phone numbers as login credentials to access Facebook from their mobile devices. Only a username and password combination will be allowed.

Coe also notes that a similar incident occurred on a customer’s phone in Atlanta, referring to the incident involving the three women. In that case, a misdirected cookie was set on the phone. This is a slightly different issue from what’s described above as it does indeed hint at a routing problem where users are sent the wrong cookie. Although the problem is now resolved, AT&T has still not been able to determine what caused this particular issue. However, the possible routing issue behind this one incident (AT&T could only isolate the problem to one of the three women’s phones) does not appear to be the cause of the other problems. While still somewhat disturbing, especially since the cause is unknown, this singular occurrence does not merit worrying about any “far-reaching,” internet-wide consequences as implied by the original article.

  • BearExtender n3 grabs WiFi from afar

We’ve seen a few WiFi extenders in our day, but the BearExtender n3 has a few critical advantages over the rest: it’s cheap, effective, and, uh, legal. The $45 external WiFi adapter for Macs was developed by Rolan Saekow, a Berkeley grad who wanted access to the campus “Airbears” network from wherever he was — and it seems to do the trick, as TUAW’s informal testing revealed stronger signals and higher throughput when using the BearExtender over internal WiFI. Sure, it’s a little bulky, but that just makes you look hardcore, right?

Jennifer Lopez has nabbed a guest spot on FOX’s award-winning comedy Glee — and it looks like the 40-year-old singer/actress will be trading in her Louboutins for lunch trays and a hairnet.

Series creator Ryan Murphy is eager to have J. Lo portray a lunch lady when she guest stars on the small screen musical hit later this season.

“We are writing a role for Ms. Jennifer Lopez, who we love,” Murphy gushed to Extra just after Sunday’s Golden Globes. “We want her to be a cafeteria lady.”

The show won Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical) at this weekend’s awards show. Glee will return from hiatus with all new episodes in April.
