  • Preventing Rangeland Erosion: Developing Better Management Practices In Iran

Science Daily: The rangelands of Iran have one of the world’s longest history of agriculture development, with a deep tradition of technological developments and knowledge of the soil that has produced centuries of fertile crops. Currently, however, new pressures to feed an increasing population of humans and livestock in the region has taken its toll on the land, as evidence now suggests that the soil is rapidly degrading.

With the land overly stressed from the amount of livestock it supports, the ranges are subjected to overgrazing, primarily as a result of inadequate knowledge by those individuals responsible. To prevent further degradation of the land, new training programs to help pastoralists properly utilize their rangelands is needed.

A recent study was conducted to determine the most effective method of instructing pastoralists in the Ilam province of Iran, comparing the results of lectures and workshops in their understanding of methods to preserve, renovate and utilize their rangelands. After participating in the learning sessions, the subjects were then given questionnaires in order to collect data related to their overall understanding of the issues after their participation. The study was conducted through the Department of Agricultural Extension and Education in the College of Agriculture at Shiraz University of Iran.

The results have been published as a part of the latest edition of the Journal of Natural Resources & Life Sciences Education.  The authors include Dr. Mansoor Shahvali, Associate Professor of Agricultural Extension and Education in the Agriculture College of Shiraz University; A. Poursaeed, a Ph.D. student of Agricultural Extension and Education and Lecturers of Islamic Azad University, Ilam Branch; and Maryam Sharifzadeh a Ph.D. student of Agricultural Extension and Education and Lecturer of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Centre of Shiraz University.

  • US Blocking Costa Rican Sugar From US Markets Unless It Agrees To Draconian IP Laws Citizens Don’t Want

We were just talking about whether or not countries are really able to push back on the US’s attempts to export draconian anti-competition/anti-innovation copyright and patent policies elsewhere. Michael Geist points us to two cases where US trade representatives are going overboard in trying to get foreign countries to put in place stringent intellectual property rules. The first is in Costa Rica, which is included in the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Yet like with other free trade agreements that the US has agreed to elsewhere, this one includes draconian intellectual property law requirements. I still cannot understand why intellectual monopoly protectionism — the exact opposite of “free trade” — gets included in free trade agreements. At least in Costa Rica, a lot of people started protesting these rules, pointing out that it would be harmful for the economy, for education and for healthcare. So the Costa Rican government has not moved forward with such laws. How has the US responded? It’s blocking access to the US market of Costa Rican sugar until Costa Rica approves new copyright laws. Nice of the US, right? Bankrupting Costa Rican farmers to force Costa Rica to put in place a copyright regime it does not want.

Then there’s the Bahamas, where US trade representatives are demanding new intellectual property laws, claiming that the country is not in agreement with WTO treaties. Apparently, the USTR is particularly upset about the police force in the Bahamas not cracking down on the sale of unauthorized DVDs, CDs and counterfeit clothing. However, as the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce president notes, nearly all of those counterfeit products actually originated in the US — and that the majority of people doing the buying are US tourists. In other words, the issue is really with the US, but it seems to want everyone else to deal with it.

Word on the street is that the 2011 Ford Mustang GT will pace the field for the 2010 Daytona 500 on Feb. 14. The new 412-hp 5.0L V8 Mustang will be specially prepared for Daytona with a Race Red paint scheme and Blue/White Lemans stripes, Ford Racing suspension, strut tower brace, mufflers and a special interior including lighted sill plates.

The model will be an actual production unit with an early VIN and will be offered for auction at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction on Jan 23. The proceeds over the MSRP of the car will go to help cure childhood diabetes through a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

  • Illinois CPA Society Offers Free Tax Preparation for Military Personnel and Their Families

Request help now as tax season gets underway

Under normal circumstances filing a tax return can be time consuming and confusing. But for military personnel and their families tax season only adds to the stress of trying to maintain a sense of normal life.

To help them at least in a small way, the Illinois CPA Society is offering free preparation of personal federal and state income tax returns through its Military Service Tax Preparation Project, offered in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service.

The project matches families with CPA volunteers throughout the state who can guide them through tax benefits, exclusions and extensions that are unique to members of the armed forces.

Who qualifies for free personal income tax return filing assistance?

Illinois residents who are claiming combat pay on their 2009 taxes qualify for assistance, that is residents who are members of the U.S. Armed Forces having served in a combat zone or qualified hazardous duty area within the 2009 tax calendar year, or who are members of the U.S. Armed Forces serving in a contingency operation.

When and where is assistance available?

This is a year round service available throughout the State of Illinois, but it’s best to request a volunteer CPA as early as possible in the tax season. A spouse or family member — son, daughter or parents — can request assistance for military personnel still overseas.

    How does the program work?

Once basic information is provided to the Illinois CPA Society, military personnel and/or family members are matched with a CPA volunteer in their area. Contact information is shared so volunteer CPAs and individuals filing their taxes can make arrangements to work together to complete the tax returns.

Who do I contact for more information or to request assistance?

More information can be found in the Consumer Section of the Illinois CPA Society’s Web site, icpas.org.

To ask questions or request assistance, contact Jill Wiles, Community Service Manager at 312-993-0407, extension 277 or via e-mail at [email protected].

The Military Service Tax Preparation Project is designed to help those who don’t have a relationship with a CPA and who would otherwise have few resources for financial advice and information on IRS guidelines for military personnel.

With the professional expertise of a CPA, the tax filing process can be less overwhelming, and military members and their families can benefit from their knowledge and experience.

    About the Illinois CPA Society

The Illinois CPA Society, founded in 1903, is the fifth largest state CPA society in the nation, with more than 24,000 members. It is the premier professional organization that represents CPAs in Illinois.

During its over 100 years of existence, the Society has advanced the highest ethical and financial standards of the profession, and has been a leader in educating the public on financial issues.

  • Scott Brown Peaked Two Days Too Early

At least that’s Nate Silver’s read on the latest polls out of the Massachusetts Senate race.

Silver has done a series of posts to suggest that maybe things aren’t so bad for Martha Coakley — and he does have a reputation for always finding the silver lining for Democrats in the data — and this is his meta chart of the latest polls.

As you can see from the thick yellow line, there is a bit of an uptrend for Coakley. If you also factor in the possibility of a Hillary Clinton-in-New-Hampshire moment (when female voters swung wildly her way in the primary, delivering her a surprise victory over Barack Obama), there’a a reason to believe it’s not quite over yet.

  • Chicken-wing promotion draws a (cold) crowd

What won’t people do for a few free chicken wings?

Apparently they will wait for more than a day in freezing temperatures, huddling in blankets, shuffling their feet, marking their places with lawn chairs and tents.

Before the sun rose this morning, nearly 200 cold and apparently hungry people were waiting outside a new Buffalo Wild Wings Bar and Grill scheduled to open at 10 a.m. in southwest suburban Willowbrook.

    For what?

For the promise that the first 100 of them would get a booklet of 52 coupons, good for six free wings each week, no purchase necessary.

That works out to 312 free chicken wings.

“I’ve been out here a long time and it’s freezing. It would be very disappointing if I didn’t win, and I love Buffalo wings,” said Janet Folkerts, one of those waiting this morning.

“I’ve been out since Sunday afternoon and it’s been really cold,” added Buffalo-wing lover Alexis Rockman. “But I’ll be waiting until they open. To get free wings is great and they rock.”

John Frederick also waited in line through the night. “I’m standing strong,” he said. “Been here quite a while to get free wings.”

The village of Willowbrook helped publicize the event, posting news about the restaurant’s opening on the village’s Web site. The sports-oriented franchise, one of two dozen in the Chicago area, is at 7111 South Kingery Highway.

Why the second 100 people in line were waiting wasn’t clear.

  • Burns: Warm film welcome for open outcry

The documentary movie Floored made its Chicago premiere this past weekend, and the trading floor won the sentimental vote over the black box from a trader-studded opening-night crowd.

Filmed mostly in Chicago, Floored tracks the experiences of open-outcry traders whose positions in the pits became obsolete when computers arrived.

A floor-friendly audience made its sentiments obvious. Feigned vomiting drew a laugh after a reference in the film to “the life and times of the upstairs trader.”

Chicagoan Kenny Ford similarly inspired hoots and cheers with his onscreen ranting about the computer making it “impossible to trade.”

His signature line: “I hate computers.”

Filmmaker James Allen Smith told the audience that after its run here at the Gene Siskel Film Center downtown, Floored will be shown in a half-dozen episodes this spring on the Internet and mobile TV site Babelgum.com.

From the audience, Ford shot back, “Now what about us who don’t know how to use a computer?” No word yet about the movie’s release on DVD.

  • Report: C-EVO-based Jeep on the way

Three months ago, Chrysler – under the control of Italian automaker Fiat after going through bankruptcy proceedings in the United States – unveiled a sweeping five-year business plan that would either replace or comprehensively rework every single product in the Pentastar’s lineup. Included amongst the casualties will be the Jeep Patriot and Compass twins at the end of 2012.

Industry analysts have widely speculated that America would get a version of the Fiat Panda wearing the famous seven-slot Jeep grille. That vehicle would occupy the small end of the market, meaning that Jeep would need something to fall size-wise between it and the larger Grand Cherokee.

According to Autocar, Jeep will get another new CUV using an as-yet-unknown nameplate (Liberty?) that would be based on the Fiat’s C-EVO platform – which will also be used for a number of Chrysler’s midsize sedans and crossovers. We would imagine that the Jeep version would get suitably capable off-road equipment, but that remains to be seen.

  • Bank of America refusing to give loans for Saabs?

Saab floats along in limbo as General Motors figures out what to do with its Swedish plum, meaning that dealers are stuck with moribund product to try and unload. It’s as nasty as it sounds for the automaker, but for buyers, it means deals on Saabs like never before.

Being a premium segment brand, you’ll get a lot for your money buying a considerably discounted Saab. If you’re like most new car buyers, though, you’ll still have to borrow the money. Good luck with that if your institution is Bank of America and you’re set on a Crazy Eddie priced 9-5. Right there in its eligibility requirements for auto loans, B of A spells out “no Isuzu or Saab vehicles.” Being paired with a dead Japanese brand? Just another indignity for the Trolls in Trollhättan.
