  • Home after hospital stay, warning LONG post

For several days I had trouble taking deep breaths – hurt too much in my right lung area. Friday I stopped at a walk in clinic to get it checked out. I suspected pleurisy. Dr checked me out, did x-ray and said had to rule out blood clot with CT scan, so left clinic, drove to lab, got stuck in 5 pm traffic and pain kept getting worse. Had CT scan and while waiting to see if blood clot, kept having more severe pain only able to take shallow breaths. Didn’t have blood clot so started drive back. Pain MUCH worse, only very shallow breathing so called my daughter to meet me and headed back to clinic. Saw doctor again, who decided that as diabetic, pain could be caused by heart problems and said with diabetics, heart pain could show up even on right side. Dr ran ekg (which was normal). Dr asked if I had family nearby and I told him daughter was on the way. He wanted her phone #, called and told her if she wasn’t nearby, he was putting me in ambulance. Fortunately she got there in time to drive me to ER. All she had to say was diabetic and chest pain and everybody got busy. Another x-ray, EKG, and blood draws, etc. I kept telling them all I thought it was pleurisy, but they didn’t listen. Got hooked up to oxygen, IV, etc and FINALLY got pain med so I could breathe. Kept me overnight for observation and with blood taking, etc. Saturday am – had stress test. Me still saying I think it’s pleurisy. Spent all day Saturday being monitored. FINALLY at 3 pm, dr comes in and says "I suspect you have pleurisy. I’m giving you steroids and pain meds and you can go home.

So, bottom line – they should have listened to me in the 1st place. Good news is my heart is perfectly fine. Bad news is pleurisy hurts like h3ll but am feeling better and loving the pain meds.

This is the longest post I have ever made and if you made it this far – thanks for letting me vent.

  • Cyclone Power External Combustion Engine Demo [VIDEO]

Cyclone Power, the American manufacturer of the Cyclone engine, has released a few videos demonstrating to operating principles and advantages of the units they are developing. Their main focus in the videos was to showcase the hows and whys behind the Waste Heat Engine (WHE), a unit designed to power a grid-tied or stand-alone waste energy recovery system.

WHE generates between 1kW and 1MW of electricity by capturing 600F to 2000Fof excess wasted heat from sources such as engine … (read more)

  • Disney’s KeyChest is not DRM

    Disney KeyChest

There’s a lot going on at CES, and one of those things was a presentation by Disney explaining its KeyChest concept. We attended and was surprised to learn that KeyChest has almost nothing to do with DRM. We were rolling our eyes when we heard Disney proclaim that KeyChest was complementary to DECE, but now that we understand what KeyChest is, we agree. The easiest way to explain it is with an example and the most obvious to us is iTunes and Comcast. Both companies offer video on demand and use their own DRM to prevent copying. If both participated in KeyChest — this isn’t studio based — and we bought a movie on iTunes, the next time we hit up Comcast VOD we’d be able to watch the same movie without paying again. The genius of the idea is how simple it is, basically the participantes report your purchases to the KeyChest and query it to see what else you bought. It is a simple transaction, but Disney didn’t tell us what strings were attached to join up, but did say that the the product wasn’t meant to be profitable, but of course would not operate at a loss either. The other obvious thing mentioned was that Disney realizes that the entire system is useless if it doesn’t reach critical mass.

  • Will Windows Mobile 7 have Natural User Interface elements?

1800pocketpc.com has noticed this video interview of  Principle Researcher at Microsoft Research (MSR) Bill Buxton, talking about Microsoft’s Natural User Interface research work making its way into actual products.

The 38 minute video is interesting enough, but for Windows Mobile watchers there are a few suggestions that some of the great features suggested may come to the latest version of the OS.

Around 20:30 he talks about seamlessly connecting to the screens around you and then being able to use your phone as a controller for the screen. Around 34:40 he talks about bringing Microsoft Surface features to smartphones.

While he emphasized he was not making product announcements, expectations have been raised that Windows Mobile 7 will contain more than evolutionary features, and Natural User Interface features such as this would certainly bring the Wow factor.

See the video after the break.

  • Tesla taps Panasonic to create next-generation EV battery packs

As Tesla continues on its commendable journey to surpass Ford, GM, Toyota and everyone else in total sales, it’s evidently hoping a tie-up with Panasonic will help it accomplish said goal. The two outfits have just agreed to work together in order to develop next-generation battery packs to be used within electric vehicles, which are based around “Nickel-based Lithium ion chemistry.” It sounds as if the two are hoping the collaborative effort will actually be mutually beneficial, though both have been coy about when or where this research will lead to implementable results. Hopefully we’ll end up with a Model S that can roll 724 miles on a single charge, but it’s not like we’d complain (much) if we only got 722.

  • Stuart Hughes goes low-end with $160k Nokia Supreme

Stuart Hughes aficionados take note. The luxury bedazzler is now back with an entry-level alternative to its $3.2 million iPhone 3GS Supreme. Of course, the new Nokia Supreme will still set you back a suitably ridiculous £99,995 (or $160k), which will get you a Nokia 8800 encrusted with 12.5 cts of pink diamonds, some handmade veneers made from 83 grams of platinum, a navigation button topped off with a single 3 ct diamond, and the usual granite box to store it in. Only three have been made, but it looks like today’s your lucky day — it’s still in stock.

  • US Dollar Collapse: Willem Buiter warns of massive dollar collapse TNR.v, CZX.v, BVG.v, GRC.to, ASM.v, EPZ.v, SGC.v, NGQ.to, AMM.to, BTT.v, RVM.v, GDX

For US Dollar to sustain any meaningful rally now means a strict monetary policy and rising rates to curb coming inflation. With elections in 2010, Job picture and real state of economy – it is not possible….Here we should talk about one Macro Event, which will be crucial for all our Micro Caps, we are writing here about: Burst of the Treasury Bubble. Governments, Institutions and people are holding them now exactly for the wrong reason: To Be Safe. It was important last year, when everybody moved into Treasuries for safety to eliminate Agency problem with collapsing banks, now when all governments back stop banking system Elvis moment for Treasuries is gone.

With Gold signalling a Short term Buy now, US Dollar Christmas party could be over and Job report has brought Hangover. Winter blues will take the green fellow over. There is only one medication left from economic malaise: print new money, buy its own debt and let’s pray that some of it will go for the right cause and not only to Wall Street bonus payments.

    Telegraph.co.uk:
Americans must prepare themselves for a massive collapse in the dollar as investors around the world dump their US assets, a former Bank of England policymaker has warned.

    By Edmund Conway, Economics Editor

    Published: 5:34PM GMT 05 Jan 2009

The long-held assumption that US assets – particularly government bonds – are a safe haven will soon be overturned as investors lose their patience with the world’s biggest economy, according to Willem Buiter.
Professor Buiter, a former Monetary Policy Committee member who is now at the London School of Economics, said this increasing disenchantment would result in an exodus of foreign cash from the US.

The warning comes despite the dollar having strengthened significantly against other major currencies, including sterling and the euro, after hitting historic lows last year. It will reignite fears about the currency’s prospects, as well as sparking fears about the sustainability of President-Elect Barack Obama’s mooted plans for a Keynesian-style increase in public spending to pull the US out of recession.
Writing on his blog , Prof Buiter said: “There will, before long (my best guess is between two and five years from now) be a global dumping of US dollar assets, including US government assets. Old habits die hard. The US dollar and US Treasury bills and bonds are still viewed as a safe haven by many. But learning takes place.”
He said that the dollar had been kept elevated in recent years by what some called “dark matter” or “American alpha” – an assumption that the US could earn more on its overseas investments than foreign investors could make on their American assets. However, this notion had been gradually dismantled in recent years, before being dealt a fatal blow by the current financial crisis, he said.
“The past eight years of imperial overstretch, hubris and domestic and international abuse of power on the part of the Bush administration has left the US materially weakened financially, economically, politically and morally,” he said. “Even the most hard-nosed, Guantanamo Bay-indifferent potential foreign investor in the US must recognise that its financial system has collapsed.”
He said investors would, rightly, suspect that the US would have to generate major inflation to whittle away its debt and this dollar collapse means that the US has less leeway for major spending plans than politicians realise.”

  • Sudan seeks to buy natural gas from Egypt

Sudan seeks to buy natural gas from Egypt
    Sunday 10 January 2010 06:30.
    Printer-Friendly version Comments…

January 9, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – Egypt has received a formal request from Sudan to ink a gas supply deal, according to a newspaper report.

The Egyptian petroleum minister Sameh Fahmy told the Al-Youm Al-Sabe’ online news portal that his government is considering supplying its southern neighbor with natural gas to meet its growing energy demand.

Fahmy suggested that Sudan’s interest came after the Egyptian natural gas pipeline extended to reach Aswan city close to the Southern borders.

However, Cairo is still considering whether or not to heed to the request in light of a decision it took last year not to sign any new gas export contracts until 2010 in order to meet rising local demand.

The country’s proven natural gas reserves rose to around 77.2 trillion cubic feet in the 2008/09 fiscal year.

Egypt is a significant natural gas exporter and currently exports 200-250 million cfd of natural gas to Jordan, its main export market, according to Egypt’s state-owned Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS).

Oil producing Sudan’s rising energy demand has pushed it to consider importing electricity from neighboring countries including Ethiopia as well as creating wind energy farms.

  • Twirling battery concept promises a quick power fix

We’ve seen plenty spinning, twirling, and wind-up gadgets from Sony and others, but nothing quite like this battery concept designed by Song Teaho and Hyejin Lee. While there’s still a bit of work to be done with the actual “working” part, the concept is to simply let you twirl your cellphone battery around your finger a few times for a quick bit of juice to send a text or make a call — the designers estimate 130 twirls will give you two minutes of talking time. Of course, the same idea could also be applied to batteries for other devices, although you’d probably have your work cut out for you trying to charge your laptop battery.

    [Thanks, deej]
