  • Boeing Strengthens Engineering Function with New Structure, Key Appointments

Boeing [NYSE: BA] has announced that several new senior-level engineering leadership positions have been established to help drive engineering excellence and ensure program success across the company.

“Boeing’s reputation for engineering excellence is built on an array of outstanding products designed and developed under the guidance of strong engineering leaders,” said John Tracy, Boeing chief technology officer and senior vice president of Engineering, Operations & Technology (EO&T).

“Our new senior engineering leaders will help ensure that engineering excellence continues to be driven through all our products and services to satisfy our customers and grow our company.”

Appointed as vice presidents of Engineering, the new engineering leaders are all recognized authorities in technical fields critical to aerospace development (see below).

They will work closely with program managers and chief engineers to help ensure the technical integrity of their products by providing technical guidance in their various areas of expertise.

This guidance will be provided in a number of ways, including direct and active involvement in key system requirements and criteria definition, critical design and production readiness reviews, technical risk assessments and issues resolution, and any other important engineering challenges that may arise.

In addition to reporting to Tracy, the new engineering vice presidents will also report to either the Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president of Engineering or the Boeing Integrated Defense Systems vice president of Engineering and Mission Assurance, who also co-lead the Enterprise Engineering function within EO&T under Tracy.

“By having these vice presidents report to the engineering leaders of the business units and to me, we can assure that they are focused on the most critical engineering issues of the company,” Tracy said.

The newly appointed leaders and their technical areas of responsibility are:

    Boeing Commercial Airplanes

    • Mike Delaney — Airplane Performance & Product Architecture. Delaney was vice president, chief project engineer for the 787 program.
    • Keith Leverkuhn — Propulsion Systems. Leverkuhn was vice present/general manager of Propulsion Systems for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
    • Jim Ogonowski — Airplane Structures. Ogonowski was director, chief structures engineer for the 787 program.
    • Mike Sinnett — Airplane Systems. Sinnett was vice president, systems chief engineer for the 787 program.

As part of their new assignments, Delaney, Ogonowski and Sinnett will continue to focus on the 787 program, which is currently the most important engineering challenge for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

    Integrated Defense Systems

    • Bill Carrier — Structures. Carrier was previously director of mechanical/structural engineering.
    • Laurette Lahey — Flight & Controls. Lahey was previously director of flight engineering.
    • Jack Murphy — System-of-Systems / Systems Engineering. In addition, Murphy will continue to serve as vice president of mission assurance.
    • Darrell Uchima — Mission Systems Payloads & Sensors. Uchima was director of the satellite development center for Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems.
    • James Farricker – Networks & Communications. Farricker is a senior technical fellow and was most recently chief engineer of Boeing’s Enterprise Network Organization in EO&T.

Revitalizing the role of senior engineering leaders represents another in a series of strategic steps Boeing has been taking over the past several years to strengthen its drive for functional and program excellence.

As part of this drive Boeing formed in 2006 an integrated Enterprise Engineering function chartered to identify best processes, systems, tools and training, and deploy them as standards across Boeing.

Led by Tracy in conjunction with the Commercial Airplanes vice president of Engineering and the Integrated Defense Systems vice president of Engineering and Mission Assurance, the Enterprise Engineering function has made significant progress toward improving the efficiency and effectiveness of engineering support across Boeing programs.

By being able to share more processes, systems and data, Boeing engineers in the different business units are now able to work more effectively together on joint programs – such as the P-8A and 767 International Tanker programs – which leverage Boeing’s unique ability to combine its commercial and defense capabilities.

Just as important, Boeing engineers can now cross business unit lines to support any Boeing program.

For example, more than 1,000 Integrated Defense Systems’ engineers have helped support Commercial Airplanes’ 787 and 777 programs over the past two years, while Commercial Airplanes’ engineers have helped Integrated Defense Systems resolve technical and flight test issues on the 767 International Tanker program.

Now, by focusing the technical expertise of proven engineering leaders on the top engineering challenges of the company, Boeing is strengthening its ability to ensure that engineering quality, effectiveness and efficiency are being driven into the design, development and production of all the company’s products and services, Tracy said.

  • Ford V8 boss says no twin-turbo 5.0L for Shelby GT500

2010 Ford Shelby GT500 – Click above for high-res image gallery

In recent months, rumors have been rampant that the next generation of Ford’s Shelby GT500 Mustang would dump the existing 5.4-liter supercharged V8 in favor of a twin-turbo version of the new 5.0-liter Coyote V8 that debuts this spring. Unfortunately, in spite of earlier reports confirming the development, it appears that such an engine will not be installed in the GT500 any time soon. Autoblog had the chance to talk with Mike Harrison, Ford’s chief engineer for the 5.0-liter and 6.2-liter V8 engines this morning, and he made it clear that the mooted engine is not part of the program for the Blue Oval bomber.

Harrison explained that such a configuration would be almost impossible for Ford to engineer because the 5.0-liter already consumes virtually the entire engine compartment. There is evidently no room to mount the turbos on the outside of the block where the exhaust currently resides. One possibility would be to put the turbos in the valley of the block similar to the new 6.7-liter diesel or BMW‘s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, but this creates a bunch of new problems as well. The heat generated by having the turbos up top would probably cause the paint on the hood to bubble and peel unless Ford could add some exotic and undoubtedly expensive heat shielding, which is unlikely to happen.

The other issue is that this configuration would really only work if the intake and exhaust flow were reversed, putting the exhaust in the valley. Without this change, the paths from the exhaust ports to the turbos would be too long, resulting in excess turbo lag and unacceptable performance. However, this would require a level of engineering investment for new heads that Ford is unlikely to make in such a low-volume program. Thus, we’ll have to be satisfied with the aluminum block 5.4 that is arriving later this year.

  • Understanding the Global Warming Delusion by Joseph Bast (PJM Exclusive)

    Article Tags: Joseph Bast

During the past year, the theory of man-made global warming took some serious hits. More than a few people are now saying the whole thing was a lie or an elaborate hoax, and that someday we’ll be laughing at how foolish we were to “fall for it.”

Certainly there is a solid basis for this view. Global temperatures during the past ten years stopped rising and started to fall, something computer models that claim to show a human influence on the climate did not predict.

Despite wall-to-wall promotion of global warming alarmism by the media and businesses seeking to cash in on public concerns, only 36 percent of Americans believe global warming is man-made, according to a Pew Research Center poll released in October. That’s down from 47 percent the year before.

How many of you would like the Washington/Baltimore region to look more like in the future 30 years from now? Would you like it to resemble Silicon Valley or cities like Atlanta, Chicago, or NYC? I created this poll because I believe the region will be the epicenter of two white-collar industries in the future. One being the bio-tech/research/medical industry and defense. Much like Silicon Valley in CA is the epicenter of software, tech gadgets, etc. Though we are stealing some of the software market from them as well. If you have another example of a place in the U.S. or the world you’d like our region to follow after please feel free to share also.

Please give your reasoning or ideas behind your choice.

  • Magicjack, Magicjack Scam And Magicjack Review

YMax Corp., which is based in Florida, said this week at the International Consumers Electronics Show that it plans to start selling the device in about four months for $40. That’s the same price as the original magicJack. Like the original magicJack, it will provide free calls for one year.
Femtocells now offer cell phone service for $1.70 a month with MagicJack! That’s just $19.95 a year. $19.95 a year! MagicJack’s femtocell works with mobile phones “potentially” from any carrier, though only GSM is mentioned. Apparently just coming within eight feet connects your phone to the femtocell, after which you can supposedly travel anywhere you like in the house. Calls through the femtocell won’t use your minutes. Replace your phone company or get a second line, with MagicJack!

  • Rednex Release New Single On Pirate Bay, Explain Why Record Labels Will Die

If you’re a NY Yankees fan, for at least the past decade, you’ve probably become familiar with the song “Cotton Eye Joe” that is played in the middle of the eighth inning of every game. That version of the old southern folks song is done by a Swedish band, Rednex, and the song was quite a hit for the band back in the mid-nineties (hit number 1 on the charts in 15 different countries). Since then, the band has sold millions of albums — but it has decided to go in a somewhat different direction with its latest music: it’s promoting it on The Pirate Bay along with a massive 28 page pamphlet explaining why record labels will die (pdf), but file sharing will thrive — and they want to be in front of that wave.

The explanation shows that the band really does seem to be embracing both aspects of the CwF + RtB mantra. The band says that some of the reason the old record labels don’t like them is that they don’t try to hold themselves out as being better than their fans, but really like to hang out with the fans and party with them. As for the “RtB” part, the band isn’t just giving away its music for free, it’s got a variety of ways for fans to support the band and get value back. The band claims that it has no idea how to make money, but that doesn’t appear to be the case in reality seeing it offers up a whole bunch of ways to support the band:

At our website one can also get a membership. You can be a free member but also a paying member
for anything between 3 to 666 Euro. For this you can get free stuff, such as a cap with a cow that says,
“I want moooore!!!” ( … We didn’t say it was funny, just that you could … ) or free downloads of
music, pics and videos, chat with us, read articles and interviews, win backstage passes or even order
a prank call from us to your boss in the middle of the night! At the website we also have ads where we
get some money if they are clicked on.

But the band also realizes that perhaps its fans might have some good RtB ideas as well:

But also — we want your ideas!! So how the hell can we make a living on our music now?? Tell us.
Help us. Call your local bar and tell them to book us for a show! Call Jack Daniels and ask him to
sponsor us! Call the circus and ask for vacancies! Any support we can get are we happy for…

But in the end the band is sure that file sharing isn’t just the future, but that it benefits everyone. While I don’t fully agree with the band’s claim that record labels will disappear in 12 years (perhaps a more accurate version is that record labels as we know them will disappear in that time), the entire explanation of what’s going on in the music business is well worth reading. The band points out, quite accurately, that file sharing is not going away, and the moral and legal questions people raise are pretty pointless. It points out that the big four major record labels have basically done everything wrong with little effort to really adapt. Then, amusingly, they suggest that any employees at such labels might want to bail out sooner rather than later — to prevent having such a dead end company on the resume for too long. They also suggest that new bands avoid signing with the majors, knowing that from here on out they’ll just be stuck in the rapid decline phase.

And, in the end, the band is thrilled about all that opportunity:

Well, well, sad tunes, huh? Actually, not at all! The fact is that this development is only bad news to a
few individuals. For the rest of us it’s fantastic and hugely beneficial, and not simply in terms getting
free access to music and film, but in relieving all costs, borders and delay to obtain access to ALL
information across the globe. The benefit to mankind is so monumental that it cannot be compared to
anything that we have experienced before.

This movement is part of something much greater and we all need to expand our perspectives to realise
the enormous value and potential that lies within it.

I’m just quoting a few select parts, but an awful lot of the arguments made in the paper sound like what we talk about here. Take, for example, this section on copyright:

This debate needs to be taken to another level. It is no longer relevant or even interesting to discuss
whether someone has the moral right or not to exclusively demand rights to one’s music or ideas. It is
not at all as clear-cut as the music business and various law enforcement institutions claim.

The copyright is definitely not a holy natural right that people acquire at birth. The concept that as
soon as someone has an idea they also have the right to it is absurd. Copyright is something that is
claimed and needs supporters to then assert the claim. There is nothing wrong in trying to capitalise
on one’s ideas but it is important to realise that this is not a given right that everyone automatically
    must agree to and respect.

It’s a good read, and definitely great to see yet another band that seems to have embraced what the technology allows, and are jumping fully into new business model experiments.

  • Transportation Reform a Key Priority in 2010

Photo: Alstom’s New York City subway car. Photo courtesy of Alstom

As advocates for clean energy and good jobs evaluate opportunities to advance our issues in 2010—from a jobs bill that could include energy efficiency measures to a federal clean energy and climate bill—there is another oft-overlooked vehicle that advocates would be wise to consider. This year, Congress will likely pass a national transportation bill – legislation that comes up only about once every six years – through which the nation could reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector and significantly curtail petroleum use, thereby reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil. The transportation bill also could deliver major economic benefits, including millions of new construction, operations and manufacturing jobs – just what the doctor ordered to fix what’s ailing the U.S. economy.

Click here to read a new Apollo Alliance feature story about the upcoming transportation bill debate.

Among the organizations that are planning to engage groups in the upcoming transportation debate is the coalition Transportation for America, which was created in 2008 by Smart Growth America, Reconnecting America, and the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership. T4America, as the coalition is called, now counts some 400 organizations that support its agenda to create “a new national transportation program that will take America into the 21st Century by building a modernized infrastructure and healthy communities where people can live, work and play.”

“It’s astonished and gratified us the range of organizations that have realized a connection to transportation,” said David Goldberg, communications director at T4America. He listed AARP as being a T4America member that is concerned that the U.S. transportation landscape is unfriendly to aging Americans; the American Public Health Association as a member that is troubled by the health impacts of pollution from the transportation sector and the lack of physical activity that has resulted from our transportation infrastructure; and PolicyLink as a member that wants to provide poor communities access to affordable, high-quality transportation options.

Environmental groups like Environmental Defense Fund and Natural Resources Defense Council are also part of the T4America coalition because of their focus on climate change. “If you’re talking about climate change, transportation is about a third of the emissions, and you’re not going to be able to put all new vehicles that run on cleaner fuels out there in time to deal with the problem,” said Goldberg. “Liquid fuel is going to be the fuel source for a lot longer, but part of what we need to do is not drive so much.”

The Apollo Alliance will be actively involved in the transportation debate during 2010, advocating for a cleaner, more sustainable transportation infrastructure and the high-quality jobs that will be generated by its development. Many economists consider the transportation sector to be rife with job creation potential. A recent study by the Economic Policy Institute (Transportation Investments and the Labor Market) found that a $250 billion investment in the U.S. transportation system would create more than 2.8 million direct and indirect jobs, 370,000 of them in manufacturing.

“Most of our manufacturers are buying components and intellectual property from overseas,” said Ed Wytkind, president of the Transportation Trades Department of the AFL-CIO. “This [transportation bill] is a great opportunity to look at the next generation of locomotives and passenger rail cars and buses and make sure they’re not only more energy efficient, but that they also support American jobs.”

Click here to read the new Apollo Alliance feature story about the upcoming transportation debate, and the potential environmental and job benefits of a national transportation bill. And check www.apolloalliance.org on a regular basis for the latest information on Apollo’s role in developing a 21st century transportation policy.

    Speaking of transportation …

A new report released on Tuesday by the Center for Neighborhood Technology, Smart Growth America and U.S. PIRG found that in the ten months following enactment of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, investments in public transportation created twice as many jobs per dollar as investments in highways. According to the report, What we learned from the Stimulus, and how to use what we learned to speed job creation in the 2010 jobs bill, the ARRA data compiled by the states shows that every billion dollars spent on public transportation produced 16,419 job-months, compared to 8,781 job-months for every billion spent on highway infrastructure. The report also examined the perception that public transportation projects are not as “shovel-ready” as highway projects. It found that nationally, ARRA-funded public transportation and highway infrastructure projects are spending money at about the same rate.

The organizations that authored the report hope that these findings convince Senators, who will soon be considering a jobs bill, to approve higher levels of investment in public transportation than were included in the House jobs bill that passed in December.

“This is a no-brainer. The Senate can ensure that more jobs are created across the country building the transportation system we need for the 21st century,” said Geoff Anderson, president of Smart Growth America. “If we are serious about creating jobs and bringing about the economic recovery our nation desperately needs, members of the Senate will insist on investing a greater percentage of the transportation funds in public transportation. Who is against more jobs?”

    Green Jobs Training Grants Announced

On Wednesday, the Department of Labor announced that it would be awarding $100 million in green jobs training grants to 25 projects throughout the country. These Energy Training Partnership grants are part of the $500 million that was set aside in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to prepare workers for careers in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries.

According to Department of Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, who announced the grants in a webcast, the Energy Training Partnership grants are going to partnerships that include labor unions, public or private employers, and workforce organizations. They will support job training and placement for workers in underserved communities, such as veterans, women, youth, African Americans and Latinos, and will also target workers who have been impacted by the restructuring of the auto industry.

In Missouri, a partnership led by the UAW and the Labor Employment and Training Corporation will use the grant funds to retrain dislocated and incumbent auto workers for employment in energy efficiency and clean energy sectors. In Ohio, a partnership led by the Communication Workers of America National Education and Training Trust will develop and deliver a “Green Manufacturing Skill Training Certification” to prepare workers for careers in energy-related, energy storage and clean-manufacturing environments. In Ohio, New York, New Jersey and Utah, a partnership led by the International Transportation Learning Center will prepare workers for careers in public transportation.

The entire list of Energy Training Partnership grantees is available at the Department of Labor website.

Jerome Ringo Transitions from Apollo Alliance President to Stalwart Board Member

This week, Apollo announced that Jerome Ringo, our president since 2005, has accepted the position of senior executive for global strategies with Green Port, a private company that focuses on establishing sustainable “green” ports around the world. Ringo served as president of the Apollo Alliance since 2005 and will continue with us as a member of our board of directors.

“We congratulate Jerome on taking this next step in his distinguished career,” said Phil Angelides, chairman of the Apollo Alliance. “Jerome’s charismatic leadership helped Apollo reach new heights in our efforts to create good, clean energy jobs across the country. We are fortunate that he will continue to lend his voice and direction to Apollo as a member of our board.”

A dedicated champion of environmental justice and vocal clean energy advocate, Jerome began his career working in Louisiana’s petrochemical industry, where for more than a decade he was an active union member and worked with fellow members to secure a safe work environment and quality jobs. As he began to observe the negative impacts of the industry’s pollution on local communities – primarily poor, minority communities – Jerome began organizing community and environmental justice groups. His experience organizing environmental and labor communities and his drive to further diversify the environmental movement helped solidify his lifelong dedication to environmental and social justice.

Good luck, Jerome. We look forward to your leadership on the Apollo Alliance board!

The 2010 Citi BCS National Championship Game will be the finale of the Bowl Championship Series, pitting the top two teams in the BCS standings, and will be hosted by the Tournament of Roses Association at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, January 7, 2010.

This will be the last BCS game to air on terrestrial television for at least four years. ABC will televise this game, as well as the Rose Bowl, while FOX will televise the remainder of the BCS.

The 2010 games mark the final year of the current contracts with FOX and ABC; ESPN will take over the BCS starting in 2011, includingthe Rose Bowl Game and the National Championship.

This will mark the third time that the Tournament of Roses has hosted the BCS National Championship game in Pasadena, and the first under the “plus one national championship game” system. In the 2002 Rose Bowl, Miami (Florida) beat Nebraska 37-14, while in 2006, Texas beat highly favored and defending national champion Southern California, 41-38.Never mind that Boise State belongs to the much-maligned Western Athletic Conference. Don’t two victories against Top 10-caliber teams suggest the Broncos might have a chance against Alabama on a neutral field? To me, they do.

Cincinnati, BCS No. 3, was blown out by Florida, BCS No. 5, in the Sugar Bowl, leaving both teams with one loss. And the Gators already had lost to Alabama in the SEC title game. So that means Boise State is the most deserving team to challenge the Crimson Tide.

If we could play one more college game in 2010 …

    We can dream, can’t we?

Even Texas coach Mack Brown conceded this week that Boise State has a legitimate beef about not getting to play for the national title.

“We finished .0128 out of the (BCS) national championship picture (last year), and we beat a really good Ohio State team (in the Fiesta Bowl) and we said the same thing and nobody cared,” Brown said. “I think it’s about the system. Until our system changes …”

Until the Badly Conceived System changes, there are almost always going to be unanswered questions and controversies at the end of the season.

So, congratulations, Nick Saban, but wipe that smirk off your face. You’re not the only 14-0 team. You’re the only one that was allowed to play for the national title.

Super Radio Set Will Tune In Any Of World’s Programs

JUST about the largest radio receiving set to be made so far is the latest creation of E. H. Scott. Night or day it will tune in any broadcasting station in the entire world

The receiver has forty tubes, and there are five loud speakers in combination to give the best reproduction possible on all tone frequencies. There is a big speaker to catch the bass notes, two ordinary speakers, then two little speakers to reproduce notes in the highest range. One of these is the Tweedy Speaker.

The receiving set pictured was built up from a series of experiments which cost $12,000, but custom built models of this super radio job may be had for $2,500.

My wife and I have just spent our 60th wedding anniversary with our family here in Australia. We have had a wonderful life together. I have also had a very satisfactory professional life. I firmly believe that I owe a debt to society.

The predictable collapse of the Copenhagen discussions and the subsequent ridicule in the Internet make it most unlikely that meaningful international agreements will be achieved in the foreseeable future.

There is a very real possibility of a deterioration in international relations if nothing is done to bridge the ever widening gap between the alarmists and the sceptics that will also provide a face-saving exit for the politicians.

    This is my contribution.

I have also attached the data (HYDROMET) used in my studies in computer readable format. It was provided by the responsible authorities.

    Regards,

    Will.

I’m your best friend – I am your Lucky Strike

I am a better friend than others, for I am made only of mild, fragrant, expensive center leaves. Not a single sharp top leaf nor a single coarse bottom leaf mars my good taste or my uniform mildness. I do not irritate your throat. I am, indeed, a soothing companion, the best of friends.

Blimp Tows Aquaplane to Give Latest Aquatic Thrill
HITCH hiking behind the Goodyear blimp Volunteer is the latest form of water sport for thrill seekers on the California bathing beaches. One of the most ardent devotees of the sport is Elmer Peck, of Long Beach, holder of the world’s record for endurance on an aquaplane. He is shown in the accompanying photo stunting on an aquaplane in tow of the Volunteer which is flying low over the water at a clip of 60 miles per hour. Stunting like this demands the utmost in nerve and skill.
