Photographing Byrd’s Adventures in Little America
by TED MAGEE
Exciting and comic events of daily life in the frozen, blizzard swept Antarctic were preserved in pictures by two daring photographers. Here is their pictorial story of a South Pole expedition.
FROM Antarctica, the bottom of the world, the Robinson Crusoes of Science have returned with Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd with tons of data on the greatest expanse of unexplored land on this earth.
In the desert of ice, blizzards, and darkness of the South Polar regions the second Byrd expedition gathered more scientific knowledge in eighteen months than all the expeditions to the Ross Sea sector during the last 100 years. The results of the expedition will be preserved in the books and lectures of Admiral Byrd, but even those who can not read can witness the actual adventures, the daily life, and the work of the Admiral and his group of explorers.
This record was brought back for millions to see in 135,000 feet of movie film, exposed by John L. Herrmann, chief cinematographer of the expedition, and his assistant, Carl O. Peterson, radio operator.
To obtain this pictorial account, the two photographers worked under all sorts of discouraging conditions and occasionally under obvious danger. Throughout the months of darkness that engulfed Little America during the South Pole’s long night, the photographers obtained their action pictures by means of flares and banks of photoflood lights and entertained the group of explorers with motion picture shows in the Penguin Theater. The Penguin Theater was established in the mess room. After meals the tables were stacked along the walls, the benches placed in rows and the show started. The expedition carried 97 feature length motion pictures from eight Hollywood studios, in addition to comedies and even a travelogue.
“The pictures lasted pretty nearly through the winter night,”
Chief Photographer Herrmann said. “When we had shown them all, we voted on favorites and showed them over again. You can be sure that the Penguin Theater had the most appreciative audience in the Americas — North, South, and Little.
“When daylight finally arrived, we were anxious to get moving. The first few days of twilight were devoted to digging out from the snow drifts. There was a lot of shoveling to be done and everyone had to pitch in.” After five airplanes were dug out of their igloo ice hangars, the work of aerial exploration began. The expedition brought three of the planes to the Bay of Whales, the other two having been left buried in the ice by the previous Byrd expedition. Before the long night descended on the little colony the hangars were dug into the snow. Rectangular snow blocks were cut and used for constructing the walls high enough to clear the top of the wings. The blocks froze in position. When the planes were towed into place by tractors, the front and rear walls were erected. Bamboo poles were placed over the hangars and covered with tarpaulin to form the roof. Blizzards delayed the work twice, and after the storms the men had to dig the planes out from under the snow. Through the long Polar night, the ships rested snugly under a blanket of snow while the mechanics overhauled the engines in a subterranean shop and installed instruments in the ships. When the sun finally rose again, the planes were dug out. Buried for five years under tons of snow and ice, the Fairchild and Ford ships, abandoned by the previous expedition, were found to be in fairly good condition after excavation.
After the planes were dug out of their hangars, the photographers spent a great deal of their time in the air. The two men made 26 flights for pictures. In fourteen months, under the direction of Admiral Byrd and Chief Pilot Harold June, the planes made 142 flights and flew a total of 12,900 miles, using more than 6,000 gallons of fuel and 500 gallons of oil. The fliers, accompanied by scientific members of the expedition, explored more than 100,000 square miles of territory.
In addition to obtaining a photographic record of the terrain for study and mapping purposes and carrying instruments for scientific data, the planes themselves were used to determine the topography of the barren continent of Antarctica. Contour lines were obtained by bringing the planes down every twenty miles until their skids touched the snow and surface altitude checked by reading the altimeter.
Peterson had his closest escape from death during a trip through Marie Byrd land en ‘ route to the Edsel Ford range by tractor. With three men he had set out to record pictures of the journey. Suddenly, after several days journey, a blizzard sprang up. The wind was suffocating in intensity.
As the blizzard grew worse the men pitched a tent next to the tractor, one of them staying in the cab of the latter. The storm grew worse and lasted for a week. The wind blew so hard that it was impossible to venture outside and the man in the tractor cab had to remain in the cab for a week, while the other three took turns holding up the tent. After it was all over, the difficult task then began of digging out from the snow drifts.
Herrmann had his one dangerous experience when he broke the camp rules and ventured off alone in the spring twilight. The haze obliterates everything and without a horizon it is very easy to become lost. Herrmann went down to view the seals, and thought he was returning in the right direction. He wore a wool shirt and a windproof —a very light but warm bit of clothing which largely replaced furs for warmth. It was 22 below zero. For nine hours he tried to find his way back. Finally he began back tracking and reached camp utterly exhausted with one foot partly frozen.
“Both of us were on the scene when the big Fokker high wing monoplane crashed shortly after taking off,” Herrmann said. “I had to pick up my camera and run for fear of being hit, but the shots we got were both close up and distant. The big ship wobbled as it took off. We had our cameras set to take scenes of general activity. When the Fokker began wobbling, we swung our cameras into position. For a moment it disappeared from sight, then re-appeared very close. We were both grinding away as it crashed.
“Speaking of shots, we brought back one scene that is a knockout. One of the boys was given a whip and a chair and made to enter a snow arena. He was told that he would be facing a wild animal. We started grinding the cameras. He came in warily and waited for the animal to be released at another-entrance. Suddenly a Penguin came wobbling out. The result was a scream. You should have seen our valiant expeditioner battling the ferocious beast.”
The penguins in the Antarctic are of two general types, the adelie or smaller penguins and the emperors. Some emperors grow to the size of eight-year-old children. Penguins weighing as much as 80 pounds were encountered.
Granite-sloped mountains 20,000 feet high separated Little America from the South Pole. On one trip Peterson experienced one of his most thrilling moments when the big Condor’s second motor quit at 16,000 feet while they were heading for the Edsel Ford range. Fortunately, the motor picked up again before a crash occurred.
Found Exposed Coal Deposits One party exploring more distant territory found coal deposits lying exposed on the surface. The expedition returned to the United States with conclusive proof that the Antarctic has extremely heavy coal beds beneath its deep cap of snow. Another group reported discovery of three volcanoes which were blowing smoke and fire out of snow and ice.
The bitter cold, even in the underground buildings in Little America, made handling cameras difficult. Moisture freezing in some of the instruments made it necessary to keep some of them near a heater until ready for use.
One of the curiosities of travel in the Antarctic was the frequent changes of time necessary while traveling east or west from Little America. Every fifteen minutes the men would change their watches by one hour because of the converging latitudes.
Peterson Made 21 Flights The cameras were taken on tractor expeditions to supply bases located miles from Little America for the planes on their exploration flights. These trips through blizzards and over dangerous crevasses provided the men with many thrilling adventures. On one occasion Peterson and a group had to dig a tractor out which became lodged in a 35-foot crevasse. They had to build a snow bridge under it and then dig a ramp in the hard-packed snow. The accident nearly cost the expedition one of the six motion picture cameras.
The cameras were taken along on many trips. Peterson made 21 flights with the camera. Herrmann made five. The longest dog team trip by surface was 1,220 miles. One plane flight was approximately that long.

The 2010 Citi BCS National Championship Game will be the finale of the Bowl Championship Series, pitting the top two teams in the BCS standings, and will be hosted by the Tournament of Roses Association at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, January 7, 2010.
This will be the last BCS game to air on terrestrial television for at least four years. ABC will televise this game, as well as the Rose Bowl, while FOX will televise the remainder of the BCS.
The 2010 games mark the final year of the current contracts with FOX and ABC; ESPN will take over the BCS starting in 2011, includingthe Rose Bowl Game and the National Championship.
This will mark the third time that the Tournament of Roses has hosted the BCS National Championship game in Pasadena, and the first under the “plus one national championship game” system. In the 2002 Rose Bowl, Miami (Florida) beat Nebraska 37-14, while in 2006, Texas beat highly favored and defending national champion Southern California, 41-38.Never mind that Boise State belongs to the much-maligned Western Athletic Conference. Don’t two victories against Top 10-caliber teams suggest the Broncos might have a chance against Alabama on a neutral field? To me, they do.
Cincinnati, BCS No. 3, was blown out by Florida, BCS No. 5, in the Sugar Bowl, leaving both teams with one loss. And the Gators already had lost to Alabama in the SEC title game. So that means Boise State is the most deserving team to challenge the Crimson Tide.
If we could play one more college game in 2010 …
We can dream, can’t we?
Even Texas coach Mack Brown conceded this week that Boise State has a legitimate beef about not getting to play for the national title.
“We finished .0128 out of the (BCS) national championship picture (last year), and we beat a really good Ohio State team (in the Fiesta Bowl) and we said the same thing and nobody cared,” Brown said. “I think it’s about the system. Until our system changes …”
Until the Badly Conceived System changes, there are almost always going to be unanswered questions and controversies at the end of the season.
So, congratulations, Nick Saban, but wipe that smirk off your face. You’re not the only 14-0 team. You’re the only one that was allowed to play for the national title.

Apple Advances in Greenpeace Charts

Once per quarter, international environmental advocacy agency Greenpeace releases its Guide to Greener Electronics, which ranks gadget and computer makers on their efforts to be more ecologically minded. Last time around, Apple had managed only a ninth place finish in October of last year. For this inaugural 2010 survey, it jumps four spots to fifth overall.
Apple’s score didn’t increase that much, going from 4.9 to 5.1, but some of its competitors did very poorly over the period covered by the rankings, according to Greenpeace’s analysis. What Apple did manage to do was to actually act in a way that was much more environmentally friendly than previous attempts, despite actually moving backwards in its attempts to educate the public about its ecological efforts.
According to Greenpeace’s detailed evaluation, the redesign of the environmental information portion of Apple’s website actually provides less information than before, which counts against it according to the rating criteria the organization has established:
Apple loses a point for providing even less information (on its updated web-pages) about its supply chain communications than before. This criterion evaluates disclosure of information flow in the supply chain. Apple also loses a point for minimal information about its future toxic chemical phase-out plans, reducing its communication on this subject on its updated web-pages.
In terms of practical steps taken to lessen the impact of its actual products on the environment, though, Apple did very well:
Apple does best on the toxic chemicals criteria, where it scores most of its points. It scores substantially less on waste and energy. In this evaluation, Apple wins and loses some points on toxic chemicals, but gains on energy. All Apple products are now free of PVC and BFRs, with the exception of PVC-free power cords in countries where their safety certification process is still ongoing.
The four companies ahead of Apple on the ratings scale are Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Philips. That means that Apple is second among computer makers overall. Nintendo, Microsoft and Lenovo occupy the three bottom spots on the chart, with Microsoft slipping this year for a failure to support strong chemicals legislation. Apple is the only company to have earned four stars in Greenpeace’s new supplemental ratings chart regarding the elimination of harmful chemicals.
Every time these rankings are released, people tend to take issue with Greenpeace’s methods and motivations, and generally naysay the value of the guide. It may be true that Greenpeace has a very clear political aim, but I really don’t think provoking some sense of accountability in consumer-facing electronics companies is really a bad thing, even if you disagree with the methodology involved.

My BG Rises While I’m Sleeping
Hello All. This is my first post. DX June 09 with BG level over 300. Taking Metformin 2X/day and, with strict diet control, I’m controlling to 100 to 125.I understand that this disease involves three mechanisms, lack of insulin production by the pancreas, insulance resistance of the muscle cells, and glucose production of the liver. I’m finding that my BG levels RISE overnight, sometimes by 20-25 points. I think it must be because of my liver producing glucose. Are other medications better targeted at the liver component than Metformin? Any other suggestions how to deal with the overnight rise? I only have a small snack or nothing to eat after dinner. The rise occurs even when I engage in heavy exercise at night (competitive table tennis).

TAB Welcomes: Andrew Flocchini
From the frozen tundra of Minnesota I hail, not by choice but by birth. I bring with me a head full of useless knowledge and trivia. I know, “Is this guy some sort of Superhero?” No, just an ordinary man, or am I?I’ve always been a tinkerer and owned many PC’s throughout my life. One day I grew tired of always troubleshooting and wanted to just enjoy the computer. From that point on, I was a Mac user. Using my machines to edit movies and other multimedia content.
I work in Higher Education as an Apple Admin at a college in Minnesota. Since I came onboard, we have been making the switch to becoming a 100 percent Apple campus. Before I was here, there was a big fear of Macs. Now there is a love affair. I created the site ADaMac to journal my troubleshooting experiences and hopefully help other Admins out who had nowhere to turn. A large-scale mixed Apple/Microsoft environment , can be tricky at times. Aside from Apple, I have a wife and two kids that keep me pretty busy. I love music, film & of course video games. I’m also a volunteer Firefighter in my city. My feeling is that I want to have a lot of experiences to look back on.
So how did I become a writer for TheAppleBlog? I guess I sent the right email at the right time because here I am. I’m very excited to have a little part of the site and I will do my best to contribute the best articles I can.

Boeing Laser Demonstrator Program Accepts Oshkosh Military Truck, Enters Fabrication Phase
Boeing [NYSE: BA] announced today that it has accepted the Oshkosh Defense military truck that will carry a Boeing-built laser beam control system for the U.S. Army’s High Energy Laser Technology Demonstrator (HEL TD) program.Boeing received the Oshkosh Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) on Dec. 17 at the Oshkosh facility in Oshkosh, Wis.
“This demonstration program has successfully transitioned from the design phase to the fabrication phase,” said Gary Fitzmire, vice president and program director of Boeing Missile Defense Systems’ Directed Energy Systems unit.
“This transformational, solid-state laser weapon capability will provide speed-of-light, ultra-precision capability that will dramatically improve warfighters’ ability to counter rocket, artillery and mortar projectiles.”
The eight-wheel, 500-horsepower HEMTT A4, a widely used military tactical vehicle, will be shipped to Boeing’s facility in Huntsville this spring for integration with the laser’s rugged beam control system (BCS).
The program has already begun receiving BCS components from suppliers.
“These hardware deliveries show that the program is making great progress and getting closer to demonstrating its revolutionary capability,” said Blaine Beardsley, Boeing HEL TD program manager.
The BCS will acquire, track and select an aimpoint on a target during the same time frame in which the system also will receive the laser beam from the laser device, reshape and align it, and focus it on the target. The system includes mirrors, high-speed processors and high-speed optical sensors.
HEL TD testing against real targets, but using a low-power surrogate for the high-energy laser, is scheduled for fiscal year 2011 at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. HEL TD is a cornerstone of the Army’s high-energy laser program and will support the transition to a full-fledged Army acquisition program.
Boeing is developing laser systems for a variety of U.S. Air Force, Army and Navy warfighter applications. Besides HEL TD, these systems include the Airborne Laser, Free Electron Laser and Tactical Relay Mirror System.
Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation, is an industry-leading global designer and manufacturer of tactical military trucks and armored wheeled vehicles.

Video: Porsche’s ‘Roots in Racing. Not posing.’ spot says it all
Filed under: Motorsports, Classics, Videos, Porsche
Porsche ‘Roots in Racing’ spot – Click above to watch video after the jumpImage marketing is a grand thing, regardless of whether or not it has any grasp on reality.
In this case, Porsche wants the world to know that it has its roots in racing. That’s fine, we enjoy watching the clever production and breathing in the nostalgia – it’s great. We note, however, that there aren’t any shots of the Cayenne sluicing around wet racetracks, hanging an engine-filled arse out to the side. Not that the Cayenne hasn’t seen its fair share of motorsports action, mind. But in this case, at least, it’s all about Porsche’s sports cars. Now, will we get a Panamera motorsports video 30 years down the road? Forgive us for not caring for the moment, we’d rather just watch this video again.

Can Greece Smoke And Drink Out Of Its Debt?
When your country is about to go bankrupt and get kicked out of the EU, what do you do for an instant increase in tax revenue? Simple: you tax booze and cigarettes.
BBC: The Greek government has announced increases in taxes on alcohol and tobacco as it seeks to counter the country’s debt crisis.
For most drinks, tax per litre of alcohol will rise from 11.4 euros (£10.23) to 13.7 euros with immediate effect. Tax on a pack of cigarettes will rise from 57.5% to 70% on 12 January.
The Finance Ministry said the measures would increase revenues. The government has ruled out increasing VAT. Value added tax currently stands at 19%.

Lupini beans
16 g carbs with 16 g fiber !!? Have any of you used them? Yesterday when buying some beans, I came across a type I had not heard of before. Its by Unico (which may be a Canadian company) According to the nutrition label:
1/2 cup = 160 calories
5 g. fat 14g protein 16 g carbs 16 g fiber.
I have emailed the company to check that this is not a mistake. So far no reply. Online I have found bits of interesting info, there seem to be several different varieties. However only vague references to actual nutritional info. I believe the numbers pretty much add up however. (Assuming 1/2 the caloric value for fiber carbs). These may be a real find, I’ll have to do some experimenting. -

Four Alternative Fund Strategies That Made A Killing In 2009
Now that 2009 is in the books, it’s possible to sit back and take stock of that roller-coaster year for investors. After 2008’s disaster, it wasn’t tough for the markets to look better last year, and all the major indexes posted substantial gains. The S&P 500 Index jumped 23.5% for the year, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 18.8%, and the Nasdaq Composite was up 43.9%.
As with all bull markets, certain investments did better than others in 2009. Some of the biggest gains came from risky assets such as emerging markets, gold, and micro-cap stocks. Of the 12 Morningstar stock sectors, the best performers last year were hardware (including such big gainers as Apple (AAPL) and semiconductor stocks), industrial materials (including commodity stocks such as Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX)), and software (including big Indian outsourcers such as Wipro (WIT)). The average stock in each of these sectors gained more than 60% in 2009, with many big names, including all three stocks mentioned above, gaining more than 100%.
But it wasn’t just these hot sectors that posted big gains last year. The rally was actually pretty broad, with even the worst-performing sector, utilities, up nearly 20%. That’s a contrast to the bull market of a decade ago, when anybody who didn’t own technology and telecom stocks got left in the dust. To illustrate that point, we looked at funds in the nine categories of the Morningstar Style Box with at least $100 million in assets, and we ranked them by the percentage of their stock portfolios in the three hottest sectors noted above (hardware, industrial materials, and software).
Of the handful of funds with less than 10% of their stock portfolios in those three sectors combined, several had bottom-quartile returns in 2009, such as Aston/River Road Small Mid-Cap (ARSMX) and Federated Strategic Value (SVAAX). Some, however, still managed to put together top-decile returns despite their lack of exposure to the market’s strongest sectors. The four funds highlighted here have some things in common: They’re concentrated funds with a value bent, and three are run by former Morningstar Managers of the Year. But they took very different paths to the success they achieved in 2009.
FPA Capital (FPPTX)
This fund was managed in 2009 by three-time Morningstar Manager of the Year Bob Rodriguez–who just started a one-year leave of absence–along with Rikard Ekstrand and Dennis Bryan, who now run it on a day-to-day basis. Rodriguez is a notoriously risk-averse manager who typically holds a lot of cash and follows a strict valuation discipline, which is why this fund has avoided technology stocks recently. However, Rodriguez and his comanagers are often willing to be heavily overweight in sectors where they see a lot of value. Energy stocks now make up more than half the portfolio after the managers went on a buying spree in late 2008 and early 2009, convinced that many of these stocks were trading for a fraction of their real value. That bet paid off in 2009, when energy stocks soared and this fund ranked near the top of the mid-cap value category.
Clipper (CFIMX)
This is another fund managed by bargain-hunters who aren’t afraid to let the portfolio get concentrated in a few sectors, namely Chris Davis and Ken Feinberg, who were Domestic-Stock Managers of the Year in 2005. Davis and Feinberg have long been fans of financial stocks in their other funds, including Selected American and Davis New York Venture, and since taking over this fund at the beginning of 2006, they’ve kept its financial stake even higher, at nearly half of assets. Disastrous returns by such big financial holdings as American International Group (AIG) and Merrill Lynch hurt the fund badly in 2007 and 2008, but it came roaring back in 2009 as large-cap financials rebounded strongly from their March lows, with top-five holding American Express (AXP) up 122% for the year.
Longleaf Partners Small-Cap (LLSCX)
Skippers Mason Hawkins and Staley Cates (who succeeded Davis and Feinberg as Domestic-Stock Managers of the Year in 2006) subscribe to a deep-value philosophy, only buying stocks trading at least 40% below their estimated intrinsic value. They don’t have any big sector weightings comparable to FPA Capital’s in energy or Clipper’s in financials, but they do have almost one fourth of this fund in telecom and media stocks, about five times as much as the average mid-cap value fund. Those sectors were beaten up badly in 2008 but bounced back very nicely last year. Such holdings as tw telecom (TWTC) and Discovery Communications (DISCK), both of which doubled in 2009, helped this fund land in the category’s top 7% for the year.
Appleseed (APPLX)
This fund is the newcomer of the bunch. It just launched in December 2006, but it has already put together an impressive record, ranking near the top of the mid-cap value category in both 2008 and 2009. The five-person management team will only buy stocks that pass its social screens, but otherwise the fund’s portfolio is extremely wide-ranging. Mega-caps such as Pfizer (PFE) rub shoulders with micro-caps such as John B. Sanfillipo & Son (JBSS), and about 20% of the portfolio is in cash and 15% is in gold (as of Nov. 30, 2009). The fund’s biggest current sector bets are in health-care and consumer goods, neither of which was a particularly strong category in 2009, but good stock picks and smart timing helped the fund gain 60% for the year. It’s not going to post such gains every year, and given the concentrated nature of the portfolio, it’s virtually certain to stumble at some point in the short term. That’s true of all these funds, but they’ve all excelled in the long term, and their success in 2009 shows how diverse this rally has been so far.

We Didn’t Lose 85,000 Jobs, We Lost 1 Million
As if the headline number weren’t bad enough, David P. Goldman points out that things were much worse:
A far more disturbing number (in Table A-1 of today’s BLS release) shows that “persons not in the labor force” increased by about 840,000 between November and December, from 83,022 to 83,865. That’s seasonally-adjusted; unadjusted, the number is closer to a million. Correspondingly, the total size of the civilian labor force fell from 153,720 to 153,059 between November and December.
What happened to the million Americans who went missing from the BLS definition of the labor force in the single month of December? They are the “long-term discouraged” or whatever, those whose prospects of finding a job are so poor that they have stopped looking.

BREAKING: Saab board reportedly votes to liquidate company, but GM still weighing bids
Filed under: GM, Saab, Earnings/Financials
According to a press release quoted in Dow Jones Newswires, Stefan Lofven, head of Swedish trade union IF Metall, the board of Saab has voted today to liquidate the company. Simultaneously, General Motors has announced that it has hired AlixPartners to supervise the “orderly wind-down” of the marque.
Interestingly, none of this means that Saab is dead, although certainly neither of these things can be seen as reason for optimism. According to its own statement about AlixPartners (available after the jump), GM continues to evaluate bids for Saab, presumably those from Spyker Cars and Genii Capital/Bernie Ecclestone – if not others as well. To this, Lofven is quoted as remarking that “It is irresponsible of GM in this situation to act in two directions, both towards a sale and towards a wind-down.” Irresponsible or no, that appears to be exactly what GM is doing. More as it happens…

Chrysler reveals slew of special edition models for 2010
Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, Chrysler, Design/Style
2010 Chrysler 300 S8 – Click above for high-res image galleryChrysler has carefully picked its words, saying that the 300 S6 and 300 S8 are all-new models that build on the rear-wheel-drive sedan’s roots. Don’t fret, the cosmetic updates are welcome; there’s a new blacked-out grille this year and 20-inch alloys to fill out those classic bold wheelarches. The S6 and S8, while blatantly ripping off Audi nomenclature (do we smell a lawsuit?), denotes whether the car’s packing a six- or eight-cylinder powerplant.
Interiors have been updated as well, and the words that Chrysler chose to describe them make them sound like Xanadu on wheels. In the pictures, however, the changes appear to include more heavily bolstered seats with embroidered logos and leather and cloth surfaces. The dashboard and other surfaces don’t seem to be much different than what we’ve criticized in the past, though it could be the same design (which is fine) just rendered in improved materials.
Other vehicles are also coming in for a refreshing in 2010. The continually dead/not-dead PT Cruiser gets a Couture Edition with a dressed up interior and two-tone paint. The Town & Country Walter P. Chrysler Signature Series also looks to get much-needed interior attention, though we’ll only be convinced of its quality after running our mitts over the nicely-photographed wares.

Volkswagen Amarok puts on official duds for Dakar Rally
Filed under: Motorsports, Truck, Volkswagen, Off-Road
Volkswagen Amarok Dakar Support Vehicle – Click above for high-res image galleryThe 2010 Dakar Rally, which is no longer run in Africa due to terrorism threats, kicked off from its designated starting point in Argentina on January 1st. Eventually, the competitors will end up back in Buenos Aires on January 17th, but not before traversing 5,600 miles of some of the toughest terrain on the planet.
This year, Volkswagen will be having a rather large presence at the Rally with four race-prepped Touareg SUVs taking part in the event along with 35 Amarok pickups that are acting as support vehicles. In the process, we imagine that the drivers will have plenty of opportunity to put the ridiculously named truck’s electronic differential lock, Off-Road ABS, Hill Descent Assist, ESP Plus system and Hill Hold Assist to the test.
Volkswagen would like you to know that the Amarok will be available starting this September in the UK, but has given numerous indications that it won’t be coming Stateside. Anyway, hit the jump for the press release and check out the high-res image gallery below of the truck gettin’ its rally on.

Hydrogen Hi Speed Rail Super Highway H2RSH Begins in West Java
I’ve talked several times in the past about hyrail (or the Hydrogen Hi-Speed Rail Super Highway “H2RSH” as some are now calling it) by Interstate Traveler. In my past conversations with hyrail’s creator Justin Sutton, he indicated that the first hydrogen high-speed rail system may actually begin somewhere in Indonesia, where the need and political acceptance is the most accommodating right now.
And sure, enough, in three days from now, Bandung Institute of Technology transportation experts will start a 3-month feasibility study concerning the Interstate Traveler H2RSH project. If the feasibility study passes both technically and financially, the $3 billion hyrail project will begin building as early as 2012.
The Hydrogen Hi-Speed Rail Super Highway will cover approximately 221 miles from Cirebon, West Java, to Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten. The cutting edge hydrogen transportation project has even made the news inside Indonesia as can be seen on this Youtube video (this isn’t a “clean” video as there is other news on this clip as well).
According to the Jakarta Post, up to 15 firms now may be financially backing this project, “The 15 firms which could become involved include Aon Risk Service Inc, Aqua-PhyD Inc, Aruna Solutions, Asian Energy Limited, Tricap Group, Copernicus International, eCompass Group, Fidelity National Financial, Global Green Management, McGladry & Pullen, Modular Integrated Technologies, Obermeyer Planen+Beraten, Pembinaan Aktif Gemilang, The Interstate Traveller Company, and Tum Geotechnical Research.”
If the feasibility study passes, this will not only encourage the building of hyrail in West Java, but may encourage business and government in Michigan and Florida to do the same, since both of these states have already expressed a keen interest in this project.

Subscription Model Turns Rent the Runway into a Real “Dressflix”
“Netflix for designer dresses” is the elevator pitch that everyone uses to describe Rent the Runway, the New York City startup that launched in November with Series A funding from Boston-based Bain Capital Ventures. The company buys dresses from top fashion designers, then lets customers reserve them online for a four- or eight-day rental period. When the time comes, Rent the Runway ships out the dresses (in two sizes, just in case) along with a handy pre-paid return shipping package. They even handle the dry cleaning.
But the Netflix comparison isn’t quite accurate. Netflix customers don’t have to pay for each individual DVD rental. The beauty of the model is that you just pay your $9 to $24 per month, and then you watch as many DVDs as you want, limited only by the number of discs your plan allows you to rent simultaneously.
But Rent the Runway members have to rent each dress separately. Or they used to, anyway. Starting today, Rent the Runway is offering its own subscription-based pricing option: for $350, members can now rent as many dresses as they can wear in the course of a single month (with a limit of four dresses out at once). For $900, they’ll get unlimited rentals through January, February, and March.
As before, members can still rent individual dresses, at prices ranging from $50 to $200—the more haute the couture, the higher the one-time-rental cost. But Jennifer Fleiss, Rent the Runway’s co-founder and president, says customers were demanding a more economical way to rent lots of dresses in succession. “We’re seeing a lot of our really loyal customers renting a few times in one month, so they’re spending a lot of money,” Fleiss says. “We’re trying to find a way to enable that in a more cost-effective way.”
Put another way, Rent the Runway is trying to make the decision to reserve a dress as hassle-free as possible. Just as Netflix members don’t have to worry about whether to add a new DVD to their queue, subscription members at Rent the Runway can pick out as many dresses as they want without worrying about the incremental cost. They also don’t have to worry about whether the dress they’re reserving is a $75 Diane von Furstenberg or a $200 Herve Leger—they’re all covered under the flat subscription fee.
“This is our first bold step to really try to change user behavior,” says Fleiss. “Our belief is that you should rent anything that’s not a basic. For your basic black dress, you should absolutely buy that. But for anything that’s seasonal or just once or twice, you should rent—the job interview, the date next week, the meet-the-parents dinner, the special night out. There is no occasion too small to have fun and pick out a special dress.”
But there are several other reasons behind the subscription program—reasons that relate as much to logistics and finances as they do to marketing, and that reveal a lot about Rent the Runway’s business model.
First off, there’s the seasonal nature of the fashion business. January, February, and March are traditionally the slowest months of the year for clothing retailers and design studios, so any program that boosts business during those months will help to smooth out Rent the Runway’s revenue stream, Fleiss says. (The startup will probably continue the subscription plan past the end of March, but may tweak the pricing and other details, she says. For example, during the high season—meaning the Halloween-through-New Year’s holiday rush—Rent the Runway might need to charge more for subscriptions to avoid losing money.)
Second, there’s the inventory issue. It’s been two months since the company’s November 9 launch, which has given Fleiss and her co-founder Jennifer Hyman time to learn that the biggest constraint in their business model is the supply of dresses. Rent the Runway has only 1,000 dresses in its warehouse, and 750 of them were out on rental on New Year’s Eve, Fleiss says.
“It was crazy,” she says. “It’s a great problem to have that there is so much demand. But we do have a wait list to join the site, and it’s mostly because of …Next Page »
