  • Hearst Is Ready to Show Off Its Skiff E-Reader Platform, But It Doesn’t Want to Tell Quite Yet. Is Anyone Ready to Buy? [MediaMemo]

    skiff

Here’s another e-reader clamoring for attention in a Consumer Electronics Show full of e-readers: The Skiff Reader, produced by a company funded by publisher Hearst Corp. and supported by Sprint.

I’d go into detail about the device that Skiff is producing, but the company won’t let me, because it isn’t providing many crucial details.

It won’t tell us when it will go on sale, for instance, or how much it will cost. Or which “major consumer electronics company” is actually manufacturing it. And while Skiff is happy to show off the device to the press, it won’t let any of us photograph it.

So trust me on this when I tell you that the Skiff Reader appears to look and work a lot like Amazon’s (AMZN) Kindle DX. At least from the brief glimpse I got.

But in many ways, the Skiff Reader’s specs are beside the point, because the real point of its parent company isn’t to produce e-reader devices at all.

Skiff will indeed sell a gadget, whose price will likely vary depending on how many publications consumers agree to subscribe to on said gadget. And Sprint  (S) will provide users with a built-in wireless connection to download periodicals.

But the driving idea behind the company is to create a platform for producing, distributing and selling magazines and newspapers, on a variety of devices.

In theory, at least, the publications that Hearst distributes and sells should work on any gadget, whether it’s a smartphone like Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, one of the many tablets coming on the market, or even a rival e-reader like Amazon’s Kindle (AMZN). And Hearst doesn’t want to sell just its magazines and newspapers, but any publisher’s.

Does that sound familiar? It should, because that’s also the supposed goal of the “Hulu for magazines” consortium that Time Warner’s Time Inc (TWX) created last year. And Hearst is a member of that joint venture.

So. Either Hearst’s company is going to compete with the platform the JV is supposed to create, or the company will become part of the JV. Ask the various publishers in the group what they think will become of Skiff, and you’ll get confusing responses, all of which sound like a muttered version of “I don’t know.”

That said, it seems likely that someone–perhaps the consortium, or perhaps a consortium member like News Corp. (NWS), which also owns this Web site–will end up buying at least a piece of Skiff.

At a minimum, Hearst officials are fairly candid about being interested in finding someone else to invest in the company; I’ve been told the publisher has plowed some $35 million into it to date.

I asked Skiff president Gilbert Fuchsberg about that prospect, and he politely demurred, as he did when I asked him about other Skiff specifics. But he was polite and good-natured about it, as you can see in this video:

  • Yahoo’s Bradford and Pitaro Talk About Content Deal With Silverman’s Electus! [BoomTown]

As luck would have it, BoomTown was at a dinner at the Consumer Electronics Show where both Yahoo’s Jimmy Pitaro, who heads its Vertical Audiences Experience, and SVP of North American Revenue Joanne Bradford were also in attendance.

The pair played key roles in a deal Yahoo unveiled last night to partner with former NBC entertainment programming head Ben Silverman, in which his new Electus studio in Hollywood will create content for the Internet portal.

(Ironically, the party in Las Vegas was thrown by former ABC television exec and Yahoo exec Lloyd Braun, who also runs a similar multiplatform production company to Silverman’s.)

Thus, I took the opportunity to talk to both of them about the deal and what is means for Yahoo (YHOO), which is seeking to differentiate itself by stressing its strengths in premium content and advertising.

Yahoo and Electus are holding a press conference about the partnership this morning at CES.

    Here’s the video interview:

I’m not sure exactly what Kim Kardashian does in real life, other than show off her boobs, but she does that one thing quite well. In the latest Carl’s Jr. commercial Kim rolls around in bed displaying her assets while seductively munching on a walnut cranberry salad. Watch this and you’ll get hungry, but it won’t be for the salad.

Given some of the more compact portables we’ve seen, world’s thinnest all-in-one desktop is certainly debatable, but the curves on the Lenovo IdeaCentre A300 do give it an air of grace, as does the swivel. Throw in a clear screen and it’s promising, but countering those kind words? Lots and lots of fingerprint-friendly gloss. We also got some time with the C310, which takes the traditional IdeaCentre all-in-one design and spruces it up a bit with a brown finish — it’s otherwise what you’ve come to expect, for better or for worse. Enough chit-chat, on with the photos!

  • Denon S-5BD combines a receiver with a Blu-ray deck, costs too much

We’re not sure why you’d want to spend $1,799 on a 5.1-channel receiver with an integrated Blu-ray deck when you can mix-and-match plenty of terrific 7.1 receivers and BD players separately for far less, but hey — it’s CES and Denon’s introducing the S-5BD in case you do. Sure, it’ll do BD-Live and do two-source, two-zone audio distribution with 3 HDMI inputs and an optional iPod control dock, but you know you’re doing something wrong when you have to buy a separate amp to use the 7.1-channel analog outputs. Denon, you have made us shake our heads in confusion. Congratulations. In return we offer you this gift of PR after the break.

  • Alcoholism Got David Hasselhoff Fired From “America’s Got Talent”

In news that will surprise absolutely no one: David Hasselhoff was ousted from his post as a judge on the NBC summer talent search America’s Got Talent due to his addiction to alcohol, a new report claims. The actor, best known for his roles on Baywatch and Knight Rider, sat on the panel alongside Sharon Osbourne, and UK television personality Piers Morgan for four years before abruptly announcing his decision to pursue “his own TV show” in a statment issued Wednesday.

Show sources said there has been concern from some advertisers over David’s image, especially given his behavior in recent months. Last Halloween, Hoff was hospitalized after falling ill in his Hollywood was after a wild bender. Just weeks early, he was allegedly taken out of a back entrance at Simon Cowell’s 50th birthday party in London after he got too drunk and started swearing at fellow guests.

Hasselhoff is expected to be replaced by Deal Or No Deal host Howie Mandel.

  • Sibm Bangalore, Sibm Bangalore MBA Registration Information 2010

SIBM-B takes the ‘no-ragging’ rule to newer levels altogether. The number of notices announcing that it is an ‘anti-ragging campus’ and containing phone numbers of the wardens of the girls’ and the boys’ hostel whom one can complain to in case of an incident leave no ambiguity that it is almost a sin to rag in there. There is also a large poster categorizing the ‘actions’ that fall under ragging put up in the girls hostel indicating again the low-levels of tolerance the authorities had towards the act. The floors in the hostel are divided into senior and junior floors and during the first few weeks of the start of the session the seniors are not even allowed to enter the floors meant for the juniors. The girls’ hostel at SIBM-B incidentally, was also the quietest girls’ hostel I had ever been to. I was told by one of the inmates that because the students spent most of their day at the academic block and came back only after midnight (12:30 am is the in-time of the hostels), the hostels were generally not a place of a lot of activity.

As the college is in its early years (the first batch will graduate in 2010), informal clubs and committees are still being added to the institute setup and many new ones are coming up each day. The literary club that has been recently formed aims to spread the habit of reading and writing amongst students. The club’s main aim is to dissect the writing styles of various writers and understand both the superficial and in-depth meaning of their works. It also aims to improve the writing skills of its members and has adopted blogging, the latest and the most popular way of writing today. Each member has been asked to maintain a blog on which they can write anything that catches their fancy. These new bloggers will get help from the existing bloggers for improving their penmanship. The literary club looks quite determined to develop a writer in all MBA students at SIBM-B.

  • Dulha Mil Gaya Review 2010 Information

Dulha Mil Gaya is regressive and stale. The most creative aspect of the film are the characters names- apart from Shimmer, we have a flamboyantly gay cook named Lotus and a butler named Valentine.

The Boston Globe critic Wesley Morris once said that the only highlights in Oliver Stone’s Alexander were in Colin Farell’s hair. Well, the only highlights in this film are in Fardeen Khan’s hair.
The song also has a remix version, which might find place at DJ consoles.

Next in line is the title track Dulha mil gaya sung by Daler Mehndi. It is currently doing the rounds of television channels and is one of the better songs of the album. The Bhangra-based song is catchy and doesn’t lose its tempo.

The remix version adds an edge to the original.

Then there is Aaja aaja mera ranjhna with newcomer Sunanda behind the mike and later joined by Anushka Manchanda. It is very typical and reminds of tracks of the early 90s owing to its orchestration and vocals. In today’s time, it doesn’t appeal at all.

Up next is Magar meri jaan with Anushka. It is a fast-paced, foot-tapping number. However it lacks punch and doesn’t offer anything fresh and out-of-the-box. Strictly an average number.

Then we have Tu jo jaan le, a soft love ballad with touches of rock. It is sung by Sonu Niigaam and picks up tempo after a few minutes into the song. A nice track that will be liked.

Rang diya dil is a Shreya Ghoshal song. It is a slow-paced romantic outing and Ghoshal’s honey-tucked voice makes it pleasing. It is a melodious track and strikes a chord with the listener.

Next is Dilrubaon ke jalwe, an amalgamation of Indian qawaali and western hip hop. It is crooned by Amit Kumar and Monali Thakur and does have the potential to be a hit. The shifts from western to Indian and back to western music is interesting. The song also has a remixed version that adds zing.

Finally we have Shiri farhad in Neeraj Sridhar and Tulsi Kumar’s voice. This one too boasts of psychedelic beats with Hindi and English lyrics. The song is very ordinary and has a heard-before feeling. Same beats and not many alterations in the lyrics makes it a routine affair.

On the whole Lalit Pandit disappoints big time. There is nothing worth noticing in most songs. The tunes and styles are ordinary and lack freshness and punch.

  • PUSARA NEGARA

    National Cemetery In The Making
by Maria J. Dass (the Sun)

PETALING JAYA (Jan 7, 2010): A national cemetery, Pusara Negara, is being created as a final resting place for the country’s national figures and heroes. But the chosen location– near the National Monument – is becoming a matter of debate as it will be carved from one of Kuala Lumpur’s diminishing green lungs.

The 6ha site for the RM18 million project is located just behind the Administrative and Diplomatic Service Association Club and secretariat building along Persiaran Sultan Salahuddin (see map).

The site, which is now secondary jungle, overlooks the city and the new police headquarters. Checks showed there are signs of clearing work, and two old government quarters have been demolished. Green hoardings and no-entry warnings have been erected to prevent illegal dumping at the site.

When asked about the location of the project, a spokesperson for Kuala Lumpur City Hall said the present recreational areas at the National Monument will not be touched. "The Pusara Negara will actually be an extension to the present park surroundings," he said.

The project comes under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Department, and City Hall was assigned to identify a suitable site and to design the landscape.

In a written reply to questions from theSun, senior deputy secretary-general in the PM’s Department Datuk Zainol Othman said the aim of this project is to provide a respectable resting place in honour of the nation’s statesmen and leaders befitting their venerable service to the country.

He clarified that the burial plots are not for sale and that it is up to the government, which will bear the cost of the project, to decide on who are to be laid to rest there.

Zainol gave an assurance that the project will be designed to be in harmony with the environment.

"The green zone around the Tugu Negara will be retained, given that the project is based on the concept of National Mausoleum in the Gardens," he said adding that the burial areas of Muslim and non-Muslims will be segregated by a buffer zone planted with big trees.

Zainol said the whole area will be complemented with various tropical landscaping, complete with suitable water features. "This combination would be presented in fluent harmony, establishing the National Mausoleum as a heritage that will be the pride of all Malaysians," he said.

Asked if the public can voice their views and opinions on the project since it is near a public recreation area, Zainol said: "They can do so through their Members of Parliament.

"Any such views and objections especially, would be brought to Dewan Rakyat or Negara and debated for its appropriate resolution and solution."

In November, Machang Member of Parliament Saifuddin Nasution brought up the issue in the Dewan Rakyat, saying: "There is already a lack of open spaces and green area in Kuala Lumpur and now the public will lose another recreation spot for them and their families."

"We already have a monument to honour our heroes. Is this cemetery necessary?" Saifuddin questioned.

The Federal Territory and Urban Well-Being Ministry in a written reply to Saifuddin’s queries on the matter had said the site will house 250 plots for Muslims and 250 plots for non-Muslims. Saifuddin claimed that based on his own calculations, each of the 500 graves on prime land in the city has a value of between RM35,000 and RM40,000.
