  • Are You Hiring the Right People at the Right Time?

hirshland_face_jan10.jpgThe most important component of a startup is the team. Not only do you need to hire the right people for the job, you also have to hire them at the right time. Polaris Venture Partners’ Mike Hirshland wrote a great post entitled, How to Kill a Startup: Hire Executives instead of Entrepreneurs. After investing in companies like Automattic and Quantcast Hirshland believes that companies go through a distinct life cycle and often the right people for the job change over time.

    Sponsor

clock_post_jan10.jpgSays Hirshland, “One of the hardest things about building a startup organization is that a successful startup is effectively 2 or 3 radically different companies between founding and achieving substantial commercial value.  And the people who will be great at one of those different stages often will be pretty lousy at the other stages.”

Hirshland goes on to talk about VC’s pressuring founders into taking on senior executive at the wrong phase of the business. He believes that early-stage startups must be led by entrepreneurial (and flexible) individuals while later stage companies should be run by executives who understand how to scale and build better infrastructure.

We’ve seen our fair share of founders pushed out of companies to make way for more seasoned executives. While it’s tough for boards to make those decisions, in some cases the transition of leadership is the right thing to do to build a better company. While Hirshland applies his post to senior executive, the same mentality can also be applied to other members of staff. How do you know if you’ve got the right staff for the right time? If you’ve got a marketing director pitching an unfinished site, a Biz Dev guy without a business plan or a new VP of engineering whose 2 employees keep hiding his index cards, then you’ve probably jumped the gun.

  • Hook Em Horns, Hook Em Horns Sign

Over the holiday break, I watched the 2006 Rose Bowl game on DVD. Twice. It was both one of the worst officiated games ever, and one of the sloppiest from our offensive end. Lots of dumb turnovers, lots of really stupid defensive miscues, even a missed extra-point! We scratched out the historic victory in 2006 because of Vince Young…but Colt McCoy doesn’t have to be Vince Young tonight to win. In fact, here’s all I think we have to do to win tonight:
    # We need to play turnover-free ball — or as close to that as possible. Momentum always shifts with turnovers, but even more so in title games. Taking care of the ball is crucial, and I think — given that the Longhorns are much more relaxed and loose than Saban’s team — we will have a chance to do that tonight. But that’s where we get to the old saying about the most important piece of real estate in sports rests between the ears.

    # Defense, defense, defense. Even in one of our worst offensive performances ever — we never should have beat Nebraska — we still won, and it was because of our defense. We were able to overcome turnovers and all the mistakes in the 2006 title game because of our defense. Alabama and Texas have the top two defenses in the country. Our last trip to the Rose Bowl was an offensive shootout. I bet this year, it’s a defensive battle. More boring, yes, but also a game in which we can stay competitive.

  • ShareGrove taps into private conversations with new beta

Picture 47ShareGrove, a San Mateo-startup that aims to deepen online social interaction between close friends, just launched a new beta for private group conversations and sharing on the web.

The company retooled its user interface from the last time we saw it at the DEMO conference last fall. ShareGrove has pared down the look and feel of the site — to me, it resembles a private room in FriendFeed. “We ended up with a simpler experience, while still preserving the core functions of private, rich and real-time online conversation,” said co-founder Kent Libbey.

The premise of ShareGrove is that there should be a private real-time space where a small group of friends or colleagues can interact. It uses Facebook Connect to bring a person’s closest friends into a space that’s a hybrid between e-mail, a Facebook wall and group chat. So if you’re not quite comfortable with Facebook’s new privacy scheme or if you want to have an in-depth conversation with a couple friends, this could be a solution.

ShareGrove immediately updates the page whenever a member of the group posts an item. It has rich embedding options that let you post videos, links, maps and files. It can also automatically find images to attach, so if you type in the name of a book on Amazon, that will appear in a left-hand column as an object that you can drag and drop into the comment.

There are number of startups that already address private conversations and sharing. Although its mainly known as a short-form blogging platform, Tumblr recently launched private, password-protected blogs. With commenting and likes, it could be used in a similar way. Drop.io also offers private file-sharing and collaboration services. Facebook, of course, gives users the opportunity to share items with as few or as many friends as a person wants, but it’s better designed for lightweight interaction.

ShareGrove is seed funded by Elm Street Ventures.

  • Vizio’s New Soundbars Are All About Dolby Digital and Wireless Accessories [Home]

Vizio’s new batch of soundbars come in varying degrees of 2.0, 2.1 and 5.1 arrangements, with all of them supporting Dolby Digital surround sound. Also appealing is the army of wireless headphones, iPod docks and speakers offered up.

The VHT512 is Vizio’s flagship 5.1 soundbar with fully wireless connections, including a 2.4 GHz wireless sub and two rear speakers that plug into the bassmaker. four 3″ mids provide the primary sound for the sound bar, while each rear speaker has a 2″ driver. There’s also a wireless iPod dock that can be placed anywhere within a 60-foot radius of the speaker and still cleanly transmit audio. The VHT512 will be available in May for $400.

The VSB200 and -210ws Soundbars provide 2.0 and 2.1 sound with virtual Dolby surround and in the case of the 210ws, a wireless subwoofer. Like the 512, this bar is also powered by four 3″ mid speakers. Both the VSB200 and VSB210ws will be available in January for $200 and $350, respectively.

Lastly there’s the VHT200 and -212 soundbars, which are similar to the VSB line, except theyre only 32″ wide (as opposed to 40″) to accommodate smaller televisions. But not sacrificing much in the way of specs, these have the same speaker guts as its larger counterpart, and the VHT212 has a slightly smaller, wireless sub. The VHT200 and VHT212 will be available in April for $150 and $250, respectively.

And lastly, there are the wireless headphones, which also come with the wireless iPod dock, allowing you to have sound piped into your ears anywhere in the house, without the hassle of wires. It has a five hour battery and charged via USB. Only problem? They’re $300. [Vizio]

  • Jay Leno Reacts To Cancellation Rumors [VIDEO]

Jay speaks! Leno uses laughter to combat rumors that his poorly-rated primetime soiree will come to an abrupt halt next month. (Love Jay, but would anyone actually be sad to see this thing go?)

“NBC stands for “Never Believe Your Contract!”

“As you may have heard, there’s a rumor floating around that we were cancelled. I heard it coming in this morning on the radio. So far, nobody’s said anything to me,” Jay began.

“If we did get cancelled, it would give us time to maybe do some traveling. In fact, I understand FOX is beautiful this time of year,” he quipped. “I don’t think there is any truth to the rumors. See, it’s always been my experience that NBC only cancels you when you’re in first place, so we’re fine!”

  • SageTV Working on Version 7 Update with New User Interface

    2947630815_21df26318a[1]

Not a big surprise here, but good to know SageTV is working on the most asked for improvement – the User Interface.

Dave Zatz had the opportunity to meet up with the SageTV guys at CES today and learned a little about what they are working on:

I was hopeful of getting a sneak peak at version 7 of SageTV which features an all-new 3D UI. But we’re going to have to wait a bit longer.

So while SageTV did confirm that SageTV 7 is in the works and it includes a new 3D User Interface, there are no screenshots or anything else to see at this point.  It’s definitely good news for SageTV HTPC enthusiasts though as this means SageTV should be nearing a new beta cycle for the next version of SageTV!

Auburn Hills, Mich., Jan 7, 2010 – The Jeep® brand is broadening its vehicle lineup with the introduction of three new rugged, versatile and innovative vehicles that deliver classic Jeep design and capability.

“While clearly appealing to our core customers, these three new Jeep models will attract new customers to the Jeep dealer showroom,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “The new Liberty Renegade delivers renowned Jeep capability and an array of standard features in a stunning new rugged, premium design, while both Wrangler models expand the iconic anchor of the Jeep brand with unique, limited-edition versions that consumers have told us they want.”

The new Jeep Liberty Renegade and Jeep Wrangler Islander edition will be available in Jeep showrooms in the first quarter of 2010. The Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition will follow in the second quarter.

    Jeep Liberty Renegade

The “Renegade” name returns to the Jeep® lineup for 2010. First used in 1964 on the inside door opening of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Renegade has always represented the rebellious heart and soul of the Jeep brand.

Positioned between Liberty’s Sport and Limited models, the new Jeep Liberty Renegade expands the Jeep Liberty lineup, delivering renowned capability – highlighted by Jeep’s Selec-Trac® II full-time, shift-on-the-fly, active four-wheel-drive system – in a unique, premium and rugged new design.

Jeep Liberty Renegade is offered in a new, Renegade-exclusive Salsa Red Pearl Coat exterior, as well as Natural Green Pearl Coat, Deep Water Blue Pearl Coat, Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat and Stone White Clear Coat.

Standard Liberty Renegade exterior features include painted Mineral Gray Keystone 16-inch wheels that wear new, rugged all-terrain P235/70R16 outline white letter (OWL); dark neutral metallic wheel flares, lower side sills, front and rear fascia, body side moldings and rear license plate bar; black headlamp bezel; Argent Silver accent on the lower fascia appliqué and roof rack; Satin Black vinyl hood graphics; deep-tint glass; fog lamps; skid plates and tow hooks.

Inside, standard appointments include new premium cloth seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, instrument panel grab handle and park-brake boot; new driftwood accent bezels; leather-wrapped center console and soft-door armrests; premium Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC); cruise control; security alarm; rear cargo cover and steering-wheel-mounted radio controls.

Jeep Liberty Renegade’s standard Selec-Trac II active four-wheel-drive system offers customers the benefit of a fully electronic two-speed active transfer case and Brake-traction Control System (BTCS). It instantly anticipates wheel slip and redirects torque accordingly, which is ideal for off-roading or when driving in inclement weather.

This premium system offers a “4WD Auto” mode that is ideal for full-time driving. When in 4WD Auto mode, the system uses vehicle sensors to adjust and redirect torque between front and rear axles based on real-time driving conditions, providing the vehicle with responsive tractive performance.

For added capability when traversing steep grades, rough terrain or extremely poor traction surfaces, the transfer case includes a “4WD Low” mode. This second-speed gear multiplies engine torque 2.72 times and locks the clutch pack for maximum traction.

Electric shifting between 2WD, 4WD Auto and 4WD Low is accomplished with a console-mounted switch. A push-pin button is used to shift to Neutral mode.

A 3.7-liter V-6 engine is standard on all Jeep Liberty models, including the new Renegade. The 3.7-liter engine produces 210 horsepower (157 kW) @ 5,200 rpm and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) of torque @ 4,000 rpm.

All Jeep Liberty models offer customers an “only-in-a-Jeep” open-air experience, courtesy of Jeep’s industry-exclusive Sky Slider™ full-length open-canvas roof.

    Jeep Wrangler Islander

After more than 20 years, the unique Islander theme returns to Jeep.

The limited-edition Jeep Wrangler Islander is available on Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited 4×4 models. Based on the Wrangler Sport model, the Islander’s unique beach theme conveys open-air fun at first and every glance.

Jeep Wrangler Islander is featured in unique Surf Blue Pearl Coat, and is also available in Stone White Clear Coat, Bright Sliver Metallic Clear Coat and Brilliant Black Crystal Clear Coat.

Other exterior features include an Islander “Tiki Bob” decal on the hood with latitude and longitude coordinates that represent an actual location relating to the “Islander” theme of the vehicle, blackside steps and popular Moab 17-inch wheels shod with 32-inch tires.

Inside, Islander’s seats are Dark Gray with Surf Blue inserts, blue stitching and an embroidered Islander “Tiki Bob” logo adorning the seat back. Blue stitching also has been added to the leather-wrapped steering wheel, with Mopar® rubber floor mats completing the beach theme.

The Jeep Wrangler Islander option package is available at a U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $1,120.

    Jeep Wrangler Mountain

Further expanding the iconic Wrangler brand’s reach, Jeep delivers another high-impact, limited-edition model with the Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition.

The Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition is based on the Wrangler Sport S package, and is available on Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited 4×4 models.

Exterior features include a unique “Mountain” decal on the hood with latitude and longitude coordinates that represent an actual location relating to the “Mountain” theme of the vehicle; painted high-gloss Mineral Gray 17-inch Moab wheels, grille and bumper appliqués; tubular side steps; 32-inch tires; black tail lamp guards; and a fuel-filler door from Mopar.

Available exterior colors include Rescue Green Metallic Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat and Deep Water Blue Pearl Coat.

Interior features include an embossed seat insert with embroidered “Mountain logo,” and anodized graphite heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) rings.

The Jeep Wrangler Mountain option package will be available at a U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $1,820.

  • Adam Taliaferro, Adam Taliaferro Injury Video

“The hardest part is going out 1-9, but one good thing is there will be eight back on both sides of the ball,” Weiss said. “I was there 22 seasons, and after 34 years [as a coach] it is not the way guys like me want to walk away. It was best to do for the program and myself.”

Typical coach, always thinking of the team, even though he won’t be the one in charge.

Weiss was also a head coach for three seasons each at two North Jersey schools, Voorhees and Phillipsburg Catholic. He was also an assistant for six seasons at two other schools.

Few realize the time that coaching high school football consumes, and the sacrifices both a coach and his family make.

“High school football is 13 months a year and eight days a week,” said Weiss, only slightly overstating the fact. “It’s not easy on a family, and you can’t be at three places at once.”

It meant that sometimes, he had to miss the football games of his sons Joe and Robert, who were standouts at Mainland.

What’s interesting is that in the memorable 1999 season the only Atlantic City loss was a 19-7 regular-season defeat to Mainland, where Joe was a fullback and linebacker and would earn honors as The Inquirer’s South Jersey defensive player of the year.
As a freshman in the fall of 2000, Penn State football player Adam Taliaferro suffered a severe neck injury while making a tackle during a game at Ohio State. Doctors feared he would never walk again.

    He did.

And on Sept. 1, 2001, following a grueling rehabilitation regimen, Taliaferro walked onto the Beaver Stadium field before a game. His recovery proved an inspiration to teammates, fans and friends. In 2005, he graduated from Penn State. And in May 2008, he graduated from law school. Joe Paterno called Taliaferro a hero. “Adam has been an inspiration to everyone at our university and many others. He is courageous, dedicated and an example of being able to overcome extreme adversity.”

  • What Channel Is The Bcs Championship Game On

On the line tonight is the SEC’s 4th straight BCS championship, and 5th out of the last seven. Also, the SEC has never lost a BCS CG, 5-0 including Tennessee over FSU for the 1998 season. Texas is looking for their second BCS crown of the decade, which would tie them with Florida and LSU with two each. USC also won two NCs during the decade, but only one of those was a BCS crown, the other being split, in 2003.

First order of business, tell us who you think will win the game and who you want to win the game. For me, an Auburn fan, although I know that strategically it’s good for the conference with a win by the Tide, tactically, it might be too big an obstacle to overcome. Good thing I don’t live in the state. I think Alabama wins handily, but the score is low, 24-16. As far as who I’ll pull for: Hook Em!
The Texas vs Alabama live stream will be coach by Brown and Saban respectively. Both of them won National title before. It will be defense versus offense. Power against Speed. Which team do you think will win? The BCS Championship live stream is available at Justin TV. Though there are websites out there like MyP2P and US Stream, you can try looking for the stream broadcast.

What about my BCS Championship Prediction? As for me SEC is the best conference so Alabama will win. But this is only a game and Texas can pull an upset!

The BCS National Championship Game is available on Fox Channel. Enjoy the game!

  • Digital albums, vinyl made a comeback in ‘09 while CDs slide

2009 was a decently strong year for music—as long as you look at digital online sales and ignore the sinking ship that represents physical CDs. The US numbers are in from Nielsen SoundScan, and they are mostly a less-extreme version of the 2008 numbers, due in no small part to the struggling US economy. Still, the sales of physical media was way down while online media was way up, though vinyl enthusiasts are still bent on keeping their little niche alive—and are largely succeeding at it.

According to Nielsen’s numbers for 2009, overall music sales were up a very modest 2.1 percent over 2008—this is a far cry from the 10.5 percent growth between 2007 and 2008, but growth nonetheless. When you split the numbers out, though, they are much more telling: music lovers bought nearly 1.16 billion digital tracks in 2009 (up 8.3 percent from 2008), and 76.4 million online digital albums (up 16.1 percent).
