  • There’s No Cure For Cancer, But We Are Hard At Work Shaving Fly Genitalia With Lasers [Science]

Today we salute you…biologists that gave a fly a full Brazilian with a laser so that you can study mating habits.

You see the male fly has these spines on its junk and we just don’t know what the hell they are used for. My guess is that they have something to do with maintaining a velcro-like grip on the female during the sexual act, but hey…I’m no expert. You need trained professionals on a mystery of this magnitude. Professionals with a special (and probably very expensive) laser that is so precise, it is capable of cutting off a third of each millimeter-long spine. You can’t just go off making wild assumptions about something this important.

The result? They have something to do with maintaining a velcro-like grip on the female during the sexual act. Going full Brazilian reduced the chances of mating down to 20%. Okay, I know what you are thinking. Thank God we fund this kind of research. [Scienceblogs via Treehugger via Neatorama]

  • Asus gets stylish with its new hard drives, bags

    IMG_0217
Who knew Asus made bags? And tasteful ones, at that? Not me. So I took some pictures. They also had a shining pink hard drive with that fashionable design we saw on the new Eee PCs. The hard drive itself is unremarkable, but some people really need these things to match, so the design was necessary to implement on accessories as well as the computers themselves. They come in chocolate and strawberry.

And of course the Eee Keyboard was there, so I took its picture too. Looks pretty much like we left it last. No purchase information on this stuff yet, but we’re going to drop by the booth live tomorrow and I’ll get it updated. Gallery follows.

  • So What Should Motorola Do Now?

Earlier this week, when Google announced its Nexus One phone, it appeared that the new Android-driven connected device ecosystem is going to be a three-headed monster: Qualcomm as provider of the chips, Google as maker of the operating system and HTC as the preferred device manufacturer. (In the PC-centric WinTel world, the infamous troika consisted of Microsoft, Intel and Dell.) The Nexus One release essentially left Motorola and the guy who bet the company on Android, CEO Sanjay Jha, out in the cold.

At the device unveiling held at Googleplex, the search giant made a big effort to dispel the notion that it’s not doing an end run around its partners. Google even got Jha to show up, get on stage and mutter some polite nothings. It didn’t go unnoticed that he was late getting there — he cited traffic — and left as soon as it was over.

Well, paint me cynical, but guys who have corporate Gulfstreams at their disposal don’t get delayed in traffic unless they want to. More importantly, his onstage body language made clear that Motorola wasn’t too thrilled about the Nexus One, especially after publicly betting the farm on Android.

Indeed, I’ve since had two very senior sources in the mobile industry confirm as much.

If I was Jha, I’d sure feel snookered. And soon, the Verizon version of the Nexus One will be available, sales of which will undoubtedly come at the expense of the Droid, which is made by Motorola. The winner will once again will be HTC, the Taiwanese smartphone maker in which Qualcomm holds a minority interest.

“We had an investment in HTC very early on. And I knew Peter Chao (HTC’s chief executive),” Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs told Cnet’s Brooke Crothers some two years ago. When talking about Android, Qualcomm and HTC, Jacobs said, “It was kind of like a bunch of people who had known each other for a long time in the wireless industries coming together.” I wonder if HTC will build a Qualcomm-powered Chrome based device –- smartbook or tablet -– next. (That special Qualcomm-HTC relationship is perhaps the reason why HTC is porting its Sense technology to the increasingly irrelevant BREW platform.)

In a note to clients issued yesterday, RBC Capital Markets’ analyst Mark Sue estimated that Motorola sold 12.5 million mobile devices in the fourth quarter of 2009, down from his previous estimate of 13 million devices. He blamed slower-than-expected sales of the CLIQ, which are being handled by T-Mobile USA. At the same time, Motorola is banking on the U.S. and China for the near term before eventually going after the European market. While the Droid is said to have topped the million-device mark, the company is still skating on thin ice and any disruption — such as the Nexus One — could essentially send Motorola into bone-freezing waters. The Verizon edition of the Nexus One, for example, is going to cause problems for a new device Motorola wants to sell to Verizon. It is codenamed Calgary and has MotoBlur, according to Sue.

That is why the Nexus One feels like a knife in the back. So what should Motorola’s Jha do? Call Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO? Nah, that’s a terrible idea. Microsoft isn’t capable of stopping the Android train and even then Motorola is going to be betting on someone else’s OS. Maybe use LiMo or Symbian? Again, not so smart. What Motorola needs to do is take a page from the Apple/RIM playbook and get vertically integrated.

And in order to do that, the company should buy Palm. As I argued yesterday, Palm has a great OS. It actually has a couple of other things going for it as well, including Jon Rubenstein and the team he’s assembled, many of whom are former Apple folks. The Palm team should do the software and Motorola’s engineers, the hardware. And when it comes to the hardware, again, it should be adopting Apple’s design and development principles, which Rubenstein must know pretty well.

I argued back in March of 2007 that that Motorola should buy Palm. The tactical reasons I outlined then have since changed, but what hasn’t is the strategic imperative of the two companies teaming up. Palm needs scale, while Motorola needs software. It’s the only way the handset maker will be able to take full control of its own destiny, to not be beholden to Android or any other OS. In the past three years, both companies have become pale shadows of their former selves. They don’t have a minute to waste.

Maybe it’s time for Rubenstein and Jha to have that phone call!

  • iPhone devsugar: Simple table badges

TUAW’s devsugar series helps introduce developers to tools and tricks that they might not yet be familiar with. Today’s tip centers on table-level badging and how to simply and easily add badged cells to your iPhone Xcode projects.

Badges are a natural partner for table view cells. When working with one-to-many data like mailboxes with letters, or RSS feeds with articles, they indicate how many items (or new items) branch off of each available choice. The standard Apple SDK does not offer badge functionality.

iPhone Developer Tim Grant Davies to the rescue. He has built an open source github repository for his TDBadgedCell project. Distributed under the Creative Commons Public License, this class allows you to add numbers to the right of each table view cell, and choosing a background color for each number.

Each badge is drawn in a custom view using CoreGraphics. This means the class does not rely on extra images stored in memory, and the badges are drawn quickly on demand. You can set color properties for each badge, indicating hues for both the normal and highlighted states.

When working with cells without accessories — accessories are a table cell property defined in the official SDK — the badge is placed into the accessory view. When accessories have been defined, the badge is instead placed conditionally, to the left of of any shown accessory. The screen shot here demonstrates the use of the TDBadgedCell class using a table with disclosure chevron accessories.

The class inherits directly from UITableViewCell, and can be used in its place when providing cells for a table’s data source. Simply add the class to your Xcode project and return badged cells instead of standard table view cells. Use setBadgeNumber: to set the badge to an integer value.

Davies developed this class for use in his personal projects but when he found a high demand for these features from many other developers, he decided to re-write the badge cell from scratch. He has provided it as an open source class for all iPhone developers to take advantage of. So if your application could use a some badges for notification, head on over and try it out!

  • The Fashion of 3D Glasses, Always Out of Style [3D]

I just tried 3D HD and really enjoyed it. I don’t even mind how goofy the glasses make me look, but that’s mostly because I wouldn’t be looking at myself. Really, I’d look sillier than I can imagine. See?

And what do you do when you have friends over to watch a game or movie? Spend hundreds of dollars in spares, or have the friends you like least stare at the doubled up images, crosseyed, for hours? It’s little things like this that sap my enthusiasm for 3D but I’m into it. There’s no stopping the future.

  • Boxee Beta goes public — now for a look inside the box

Boxee BetaMedia center software maker Boxee announced the public launch of its Boxee Beta software, today, after only a month in private beta.

The downloadable software allows users to connect their computers to any TV and instantly stream different types of media, including TV shows, music and movies. The software also uploads any media content present on a computer’s hard drive so that it can be accessed and viewed on the TV. This includes personal pictures or home movies, which now can be viewed and shared with friends or family right in your living room. The beta version is currently available for Mac, Windows and Ubuntu.

The company also launched a DVR-type feature called bookmarklet, which allows the user to save a video for later viewing. According to CNet, this is currently limited to a handful of sites, including Vimeo, Blip.tv, YouTube, Break, Metacafe, Viddler, The Onion, CollegeHumor, DailyMotion, HowCast, MTV, FunnyorDie, and Gametrailers. That covers most of the big ones, at least.

Today’s launch is just one of many recent Boxee announcements, including its partnership with D-Link to produce its Boxee Box. The device would eliminate the need to connect a computer to a TV to consume streaming media. Rather, users would have a designated set-top box that they could search to consume the same media found via the software.

According to the companies blog post earlier today, they are making a joint announcement with NVIDIA and D-Link revealing that the Boxee Box is powered by the Tegra 2 (T20) platform. The platform will make for a seamless user interface, and play 1080p video as well as Adobe Flash 10.1.

  • Dynamic duo: Tesla and Panasonic team to build a better car battery

Screen shot 2010-01-07 at 4.42.20 PMNot only is it official that Tesla Motors has chosen Panasonic to supply battery packs for its electric vehicles, the two companies will also be working together to build more affordable and efficient lithium nickel batteries for green cars present and future, they announced today.

Before now, Tesla had been buying batteries from a variety of sources. But Panasonic, which recently swallowed leading lithium-ion battery seller Sanyo, has the manufacturing capability to drive down costs for the green car maker. That way, Tesla can focus on testing various batteries with its products, both its Roadster and the Model S. If their combined efforts do produce a cheaper, longer-lasting model, it could help EVs overcome one of the biggest hurdles standing in the way of wide adoption: the exorbitant cost of their battery packs.

Daimler, a third-party here, also stands to benefit from the deal. When it first acquired its 10 percent stake in Tesla last May, it also gained access to the company’s unique power train technology. With Panasonic supplying batteries to meet Tesla’s specifications, Tesla might be setting itself up to bring in more revenue supplying EV components than actually manufacturing cars itself.

But the connection between Daimler and Tesla gets complicated. Daimler also owns a 49.9 percent stake in Li Tec, a German lithium-ion battery manufacturer, and plans to use the company’s cells in its forthcoming Smart Car. This could block Daimler from reaping the fruit of the Panasonic-Tesla collaboration. Then again, Tesla’s deal with Panasonic isn’t exclusive, and there’s a chance it could simply help it design the appropriate battery packs and chargers and turn them over to Li Tec to manufacture. It will be interesting to see how Daimler navigates its various relationships.

And what will Panasonic get in return for its expertise? The partnership with Tesla has significantly raised the visibility of its battery programs, even when it was just speculation. Tesla is by far the most recognizable brand dedicated to electric vehicle production, and it’s cultivated a pretty glamorous and prestigious image. It’s a pretty good star for Panasonic to hitch its wagon to in this area, making it clear that the electronics company is ready to take on energy storage, first at the automotive level, and eventually even at home and grid scale.

The choice of using lithium nickel batteries in Tesla’s cars is an interesting one. Right now, Tesla uses lithium cobalt batteries in its cars. Remember those laptops that burst into flame? They used lithium cobalt too. With Panasonic refining its less combustible lithium nickel technology, it looks like the deal may also provide a safer choice, as well as a cheaper one for the green automaker.

  • Take that, Amazon Kindle! Plastic Logic’s boss on the Que eBook reader (video)

plastic logicPlastic Logic finally launched its Que eBook reader for business people today at the Consumer Electronics Show, after a ten year development cycle. The company took a long time because it had to do pioneering work in the creation of plastic transistors, or electronics which use plastic instead of silicon chips as their base substrate.

The company launched its business at DEMO in the fall of 2008, but it ran into some delays. Still, now the company has a polished plan. It has powerful allies in AT&T, which provides wireless networking for book downloads, and Barnes & Noble, which has more than a million ebooks available for download from its store. We caught up with Richard Archuleta today at the company’s booth at the Consumer Electronics Show. The device will ship in April with two different versions. A $649 Que will include 4 gigabytes of memory but won’t have 3G wireless. A $799 version will have eight gigabytes of memory and will have 3G wireless. Here’s our video.

  • Graphic.ly to launch a slick reader for digital comics

Graphic.ly Desktop ReaderLike many of you reading this post, more and more of my media consumption is moving online, where I get most of my news, movies, music, television, and even some of my books. One of the last areas where I’m holding onto the physical object is comic books — but a startup called Graphic.ly may change that.

I’ve tried reading comic books as images files, as PDF documents, and as iPhone apps, but none of them combined good image quality with a smooth reading experience. (The less said about the ungodly hybrid known as “motion comics,” the better.)

But Boulder, Colo.-based Graphic.ly says it has created a slick comics app, as a native application for Windows 7, as a cross-computer app using Adobe AIR, and as an iPhone app. In addition to comics reading, Graphic.ly offers social features and a digital comics store, and it plans to include DVD-style extras too — like the ability to see individual art layers (the pencil drawings without ink or color, for example) or comments from creators.

Now, I haven’t had a chance to try the app out myself, but I’m hopeful after my conversations with co-founders Micah Baldwin and Kevin Mann. They’re knowledgeable comics fans and have clearly spent a lot of time thinking about the reading experience. Microsoft must have been impressed too, because Graphic.ly was demonstrated on-stage (very) briefly during Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer’s keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Showing off Windows 7’s touchscreen capabilities, the demonstrator smoothly swiped between different comics pages.

Graphic.ly is rolling out a very early Windows 7 version of its app, first to members of comic site iFanboy in a couple days, then to the general public two weeks later. Baldwin says he’ll be incorporating a lot of fan feedback. In fact, if Graphic.ly decides to incorporate your suggestion, the company will invite you to sit in on the relevant engineering meetings.

Graphic.ly was incubated by TechStars, and just raised $1.2 million led by DFJ Mercury, with participation from Starz Media and individual investors David Cohen, Chris Sacca, Jack Nickell, Paige Craig, and Dave McClure. It’s also part of Microsoft’s BizSpark One program, which provides startups with free software and other resources — including on-stage demos at CES, if you’re really lucky.

  • NBC Considering Booting Conan & Sending Leno Back To “The Tonight Show”

NBC executives met with Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien Thursday to talk about the future of the network’s late-night lineup, The New York Times is reporting

Although NBC denied a report that it is scrapping The Jay Leno Show, The Peacock is reportedly considering several moves to address the poorly rated 10 PM program, including cancelling the show, moving it to a different timeslot, and revamping its entire late-night lineup:

NBC executives held discussions with both Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien Thursday about the future of the network’s late-night lineup. And while executives said that no final decision has been made, they did not deny that the network is considering moves that could include returning Mr. Leno to his old job as host of The Tonight Show.

A spy told The Times no official decision would be announced Thursday.

Network suits, on the other hand, say they are committed to keeping both Conan and Jay on board at NBC, saying: “We have the best comedy team in the business. We remain committed to keeping Conan O’Brien on NBC. He is a valued part of our late-night line-up, as he has been for more than 16 years and is one of the most respected entertainers on television.”

What do you think NBC should do, folks? Is it time to pull the plug on The Jay Leno Show?
