  • GoToMyPC now includes Mac compatibility

After a long beta period, GoToMyPC is now offering a full Mac release version of the popular remote access software. The cheapest option for the software and service, which is called “GoToMyPC for Mac,” allows you to access one other computer (Mac or PC) and costs US$19.95 per month after a 30 day free trial. The Mac version requires Safari 3.0 or newer, or Firefox 2.0 or newer, Mac OS X 10.4 or later, and either a PowerPC G4/G5 or an Intel based Mac.

There are other somewhat similar solutions, including Apple’s Back to My Mac (if you get get it working on your router), and LogMeIn. Back to my Mac only works Mac to Mac, so if there is a PC in the mix you’re out of luck. LogMeIn Pro sells for $69.95 per year for access to 1 PC or Mac, and higher priced versions allow Mac access from an iPhone app.

GoToMyPC generally gets good reviews, and I would like it a lot better if the company would let up on the obnoxious and constant radio promotions for the software. The advertising has probably worked for them, though, because GoToMyPC is a big seller to both corporations and individuals.

GoToMyPC for Mac is available now. Wouldn’t it be nice if they would just call it GoToMyMac?

  • Michael Lohan Kate Major Matching Tattoos

The estranged dad of celebrity trainwreck Lindsay Lohan has allegedly cozied up to ex-bud Jon Gosselin’s sloppy seconds. Christian missionary Michael Lohan — who is accused of beating, biting, and even kicking former girlfriend Erin Muller in the lady parts –has been spotted all over the Big Apple in the company of former Star Magazine reporter Kate Major.

Major bumped pelvis with the then-married Gosselin before being callously kicked to the curb last Spring — but Kate will not let the negative nellies stop her from being great! The D-lister groupie recently latched on to Michael — and even consumated the budding friendship with matching tattoos.

“I got a tattoo for the new year,” Michael told RadarOnline Sunday. “Kate liked it so she got one too. It was not a big deal.”

  • Valve applicator on VELTEKO packaging machines

The valve application device can be used especially in the companies involved in production and packaging
of grained and ground coffee – that is goods releasing gases. The valve eliminates buildup of gas in bags, released by the packaged product, which results in damage of bags and deterioration of the product.

Let us have a look, for instance, at packaging ground coffee into bags. Fitting a valve onto the bag allows for packaging ground coffee immediately after completion of the roasting and grinding processes, without the necessity of “venting” it in an in-process store. Also, the valve considerably helps to keep natural aroma
of the packaged coffee as the coffee is surrounded with protective atmosphere in the bag, which it “produced“ itself. The one-way valve enables escape of the coffee-released gas from the bag, while sealing out the air.
The internal tests and follow-up measurements of residual oxygen conducted by the laboratory of a leading Czech coffee producer showed excellent results. The readings were deep below the internal permitted limit values.
The self-adhesive valves (a valve system by a US company Plitek) are supplied in transparent or metalized form on reels containing 6,000 and more pieces, which enables a longer running time between replacements of rolls.

The valve applicator is used as an accessory to the vertical FFS packaging machine HSV101B FLEXIBLE produced by VELTEKO s.r.o. company.
The applicator is situated on the left-hand side of the packaging machine and the valve is fed to the area located immediately above the transversal welding jaws. Therefore, the valve is applied onto the bag that is being filled at the given moment.
The maximum output of the device is 70 cycles/min.

  • Kistler Extends its Successful Series of Press Force Sensors

The well established Kistler press force sensors are based on the piezoelectric measuring principle. The force acting on the quartz element generates at the output of the sensor a proportional electric charge, which is converted by the series-connected measuring amplifier (such as ICAM Type 5073A…) into a process signal suitable for evaluation (typically 0 …10 V).

The new sensor Type 9383A… extends Kistler’s successful series of piezoelectric press force sensors. The sensor preloaded ready for mounting with the three standardly calibrated measuring ranges of 0 … 3 kN, 0 … 30 kN and 0 … 300 kN is ideal for measuring both dynamic and quasistatic forces. Together with an in-line charge amplifier with range switching, such as the ICAM Type 5073A…, extremely wide force ranges can be represented with one and the same sensor – with consistent accuracy over the entire range. The sensor also offers tried and tested mechanical features with flange connections at both ends for easier interfacing with the machine environment, and centering rings for axial adjustment. The rotationally symmetrical shape makes the press force sensor perfect for use on the end of push rods or press plungers. Press force sensors from Kistler are available in different sizes and measuring ranges.

  • I suck at monitoring-HELP

    Hey guys-

I am recently diagnosed pre-diabetic. Prescribed Met. I was really sick for awhile and suspected my blood sugar was too low.

After scouring these forums and others. Everyone recommends TESTING. Fasting, pre-meal, post meal etc. Everyone says test, test, test.

So, I went to Target and got an Easy Pro (cheapest) took me a while to figure it out and I wasted tons and tons of strips. One try in 8 I would get a reading. I figured it must be the meter.

So, I went and bought an ultra-mini. Same thing. I just can’t get a good drop of blood for the meter to take. Er 5. I bought a the Ultra Mini on Sat and I’ve already wasted about 25 strips! AND my forearms and inner wrists are bruised. I try an average of 6 times before I get a reading. Is this normal?

    How can I improve?

    What’s the DEAL? 🙁

  • Type 2 and not feeling well today

    Hi all

I have been fighting a cold for the past three days also I woke up with my one eye lid very swollen because of this my sugars have been very high around 200. I just checked myself before dinner and the reading was 347 which is the highest it’s ever been. I did eat a bowl of apple jacks and before that two small chocolate covered pretzels but that was earlier in the day. I am not sure what to do about them. I have been trying to move more and didn’t bother to eat dinner. Also my doc just started me on 1000mg metformin with 5mcg of byetta twice a day to possibly lower my fasting morning reading but since
I have been sick it doesn’t seem to be working. Any one have any suggestions

  • Alexa Ray Joel Heading Back To School To Help Young Women Battle “Heartbreak-Related Depression”

Alexa Ray Joel is hangin’ tough in 2010.

The singer-songwriter daughter of musician Billy Joel and model icon Christie Brinkley, 23, was hospitalized in November after reportedly overdosing on homeopathic pills in her Manhattan apartment. In a message on her MySpace blog Saturday, the once suicidal beauty thanked her fans for standing by her and has vowed to help others battling “heartbreak-related depression.”

    Alexa Ray Joel Thanks Fans

“I have many exciting new developments for the New Year. Most importantly, to help young girls with something I feel I know a GREAT deal about: Heartbreak-Related Depression,” Alexa tenderly wrote.

The brunette crooner is even heading back to school after dropping out of New York University as a sophomore more than four years ago.

“Although it does not get much attention in our society, it is a very serious and painful condition that often gets ‘swept under the carpet.’ I hope to bring this topic more to light… I’m even going back to school for Psychology in hopes to learn more about this and many other afflictions that many of us have had to face,” Alexa continued. “I just wanted to thank you all for the incredible outpouring of love and support. It’s certainly been a whirlwind of a month, but reading all of your encouraging posts has never failed to cheer me up!!!”

  • Windows Mobile web use grows 50% in one month, WM 6.5 a quiet success?

    webtrendsdec2009

We have often seen Net Application’s Market Share analysis used to condemn Windows Mobile, but this month at least the company, that generates its numbers from analysing traffic to thousands of websites, has good news for Windows Mobile fans.

Web site use for Windows Mobile has apparently seen a sharp upward spike in December, rising from 0.04 to 0.06% of all web traffic measured, constituting a 50% increase in usage over the festive season.

Of course Net Applications can not explain the increase, but 2 obvious reasons come to mind.  One is that Windows Mobile 6.5 may have had more of an impact than analysts give it credit for, making Windows Mobile-based devices more consumer friendly and inviting to use.

The next would place the full responsibility for the spike on one device only – the HTC HD2, which certainly has a very good web browsing experience due to its capacitive screen and fast Snapdragon processor.

The month on month increase is the second greatest percentage-wise for the mobile OS’s broken out by Net Applications:

    November 2009

    December 2009

    Growth

    iPhone 0.36% 0.44%            22%
    Symbian 0.19% 0.23%            21%
    iPod Touch 0.07% 0.09%            29%
    Windows Mobile 0.04% 0.06%            50%
    Android 0.03% 0.05%            66%
    Blackberry 0.03% 0.03%              0%
    Palm 0.01% 0.01%              0%

Such growth is certainly unusual for a mature product, as can be seen by the percentages of other established devices such as the iPhone, Symbian and RIM, but often does signify either the release of an new version of an OS or hit device, both of which occurred recently for Windows Mobile.

Palm would however be disappointed, with the company not only not showing any month on month growth in the festive season, but no significant growth across the whole year either, starting and ending the year on 0.01% despite the much hyped Pre and Pixi.

  • East Bayfront Great Gulf Homes

    Parkside Condo 36 floors 120m

Described by architect Moshe Dafdie as "Gardens in the Sky".

Waterfront Toronto selects Great Gulf to be first East Bayfront developer

    TORONTO

Waterfront Toronto has selected Toronto real estate developer Great Gulf Group of Companies to lead the first private sector development in the East Bayfront neighbourhood. A date has not been set for groundbreaking.

Designed by Boston-based architect Moshe Safdie, the mixed-use Parkside development will be “a dramatic new addition” to Toronto’s skyline with green, plant-covered roofs and lush, stepped gardens.

In addition to residential units, the development will feature ground floor retail, a daycare centre and potential office and cultural space. Ultimately, the project is expected to deliver a $200 million private sector investment in the community.

“Parkside will be a trailblazer in redeveloping Toronto’s waterfront,” said Mayor David Miller. “This project is a clear indication that imagination and creativity are key to our vision for a green, 21st century urban waterfront.”

The project, which is in the conceptual design stage, is being undertaken by a team that includes Toronto’s Quadrangle Architects Ltd. and Janet Rosenberg + Associates Landscape Architects.

The Parkside site is bounded by Lower Sherbourne Street in the west, Bonnycastle Street in the east, Queens Quay East in the south and Lake Shore Boulevard in the north.

This project represents the latest milestone in Waterfront Toronto’s transformation of the lakefront lands from “a fading reminder” of the city’s industrial past into a series of “beautiful and sustainable” 21st century communities.

Today East Bayfront is a busy work site with Waterfront Toronto completing the basic infrastructure, such as water, hydro, sanitation and gas facilities, to support the major development already in progress.

Construction is well underway on Corus Quay, the future headquarters of Corus Entertainment. George Brown College will soon break ground for its new lakefront campus.

“Great Gulf’s outstanding proposal captures the very spirit of the East Bayfront precinct plan with an overall design concept that supports our vision for fostering a vibrant and diverse community in the area,” said Waterfront Toronto president and CEO John Campbell.

From a sustainability perspective, the proposal demonstrates compliance with Waterfront Toronto’s mandatory green building requirements. LEED Gold certification is being targeted.

Great Gulf will explore a variety of environmentally-progressive design initiatives, including a plant-covered wall in the building’s atrium that will contribute to improved indoor air quality and the use of recycled and locally-sourced building materials.

“The vision for the project is ‘gardens in the sky’,” said Safdie, whose firm has a branch office in Toronto. “Rejuvenation of the waterfront is a noble task for Toronto and I trust that this building will set the standard for an exciting new kind of urban living.”

The building will be a 120-metre-high tower anchored by a 38-metre-high podium. It will extend from Queens Quay in the south to Lake Shore Boulevard in the north.

“We are proud to have been selected as the developer of the Parkside site and look forward to playing an integral role in the renewal of our city’s waterfront,” said David Gerofsky, president and COO of Great Gulf Group.

Great Gulf was selected by Waterfront Toronto following a two-stage bidding process.

Here was another bid for that site.

  • BG levels

    Hello friends

I was reading through this website Healthy Blood Sugar Targets and came across some figures for BG.

It states the optimum BG levels should be:

    Fasting blood sugar under 100 mg/dl (5.5 mmol/L)
    One hour after meals under 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L)
Two hours after meals under 120 mg/dl

    With a maximum of 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L) 2 hours after meals.

Basically states that post-meal blood sugars of 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L) and higher and fasting blood sugars over 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/L) cause permanent organ damage and cause diabetes to progress.

So these are the numbers I am trying for. But I have come to a point that I am confused. The Fasting blood sugar, would this only be in the morning?

Since we are breaking up meals into smaller meals, I eat 6 times per day, so I have breakfest, mid morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack, dinner and before bed I have something as well such as tea and crackers. The question is for example with my numbers for today which are the following, am I achieving the optimum levels? Or are these levels blurred because of the overlaping or closeness to each meal?

ºwoke @ 9:30: 106 ovbiously over 100 so not optimal.
ºLate breakfest, took before reading @ 12:26 with 112 also over 100.
º2 hours after @ 14:22 had 108 so good, its below the 120.
º Before Lunch @ 15:04 with 108 and here is where my confusion is as its above 100. But is this considered fasting?
    ºAfter lunch 2 hours @ 17:04 with 93
ºBefore diner @ 21:40 with 110, so again above 100 but I had some cheese and a toast at 19:00 or so.
º1 hour after dinner @ 126 so below the 140
º2 hours after dinner @ 89 so below the 120

I hope I can get my point across. This was an odd day today as I woke to take my insulin shot yet stayed in bed with my 2 year old daughter and fell asleep so thats why the late breakfeast, but I usually eat between 9:30-10:00, then snack at 12 or so then we usually eat around 14:30 – 15:00, snack around 18:00 and dinner at around 21:30 – 23:00. So the time for the BG to come down might not be optimal for achieving these figures, if the fasting level is supposed to be before every meal.

    Thanks 😉

  • Buying an Eco-friendly House

While browsing through current home listings in my area, I came across one that was advertised as a “GREEN” house. Yes, all caps. The description went on to say that the house had been “GREEN” for eight years. Since there was an open house today I decided to swing by to check it out. (No, that’s not it in the picture!)

    green-home

The very friendly Realtor explained that the house was green because the previous owner hadn’t used harsh chemicals to clean it. She said they also used low-VOC paint and no chemicals on the lawn.

That’s nice, but I don’t think I’d describe the house as green just because of the cleaners, paint and lawn. There are so many other things you need to consider.

    Energy efficiency

    • Proper insulation in attic and walls
    • Upgraded windows to avoid drafts (single-glazed windows should be replaced)
    • Energy Star appliances and light fixtures
    • Natural daylight
    • Tankless water heater
    • Light-colored exterior for reflecting heat
    • Trees for shade (particularly deciduous trees on the west side)
    • Efficient furnace (Furnaces built before 1992 with a standing pilot may waste up to 35% of their fuel.)
    • Radiant floor heat
    • Solar power

    Water friendly

    • Low-flow toilets or a composting toilet
    • Water-saving shower heads
    • Landscaping that can withstand droughts
    • Inspections for leaks

If a Realtor is advertising a house as green, then ask for an energy audit. For help in finding a green home, try EcoBroker. If your dream home isn’t already energy efficient, get estimates before you buy to see how much it will cost to make your home more green.

  • “Avatar” Hits $1 Billion Mark

James Cameron’s Avatar has reached the $1 billion mark at the international box office — making it the Titanic director’s second film to reach the milestone.

The 3D epic — which has earned $352 million in North America — hit the mark after only 17 days in release.

There have only been a handful of films that have ever passed the $1 billion marker — Cameron’s 1997 classic Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and The Dark Knight. While the blue aliens of Avatar would have to double their take to toppled Titanic, if the film tops The Lord of the Rings, it will become the second highest-grossing film of all time, making James Cameron responsible for the two top-grossing movies in history.

    Now that’s an accomplishment…..
