  • Five Ways Apple’s Tablet May Change the World

Business writers love hyperbole. The ground will swell. The paradigm will shift. But what if occasionally a new tech gadget comes along that really does shake up society? Apple’s planned tablet may just be such a device.

Speculation about Apple’s one-device-to-rule-them-all iPad reached fever pitch this month when Yair Reiner, an analyst at Oppenheimer, dug through Steve Jobs’ production pipeline and found evidence that the tablet was being readied for an April 2010 launch.

The timing makes sense. The iPhone is three years old, the U.S. economy is rebounding, and gadget demand is pent up among Americans who held off on toy upgrades during the recession. By spring we’ll no doubt be past the holiday sales of the black-and-white e-readers that still look vaguely like medical prostate screening devices.

The world is recovering from its Wall Street hangover, and it’s looking for a new tech party invitation. An Apple tablet would be the guest of honor. Laura DiDio, an analyst at Information Technology Intelligence, has predicted the Apple tablet will be “the next big thing,” complete with 10- to 12-inch high-res screen, Web connection, and a video cam. Other manufacturers such as Dell are preparing tablets, too, but Apple is the one to watch — because Apple is best at making radical new hardware formats undeniably cool.

    Print Media Comeback

So yes, the Jesus Tablet will appear. And yes, you’ll buy one with an artificially high price of, say, $800 as penance for being an early adopter. Within two years the price will fall to $199 until everyone including your 6-year-old has a gleaming, do-anything, interactive pane of glass on his or her desk.

As that happens, the iPad will change the world in at least five ways.

    – Magazine and newspaper publishing will bounce back as consumers rediscover paid subscriptions. Sorry, Chris Anderson, but not everything…

  • Top Tech Ideas of the Past Decade

Just when you thought you could enjoy your iPhone 3G, along comes the iPhone 3GS. VCRs are all but gone, replaced by DVRs. DVDs are on their way out, and Blu-ray discs are in.

    Betamax and VHS. Eight-track tapes.

Cassettes and CDs. With technology, nothing lasts forever. As soon as something gets replaced by The Next Big Thing, the next Next Big Thing comes along.

So, before they disappear, here are 10 advances in consumer technology this past decade worth remembering.

    Blue in the Face

Say what you will about Bluetooth: It’s unreliable. It’s too expensive. A Bluetooth ear piece makes you look like a geek. The wireless system that lets devices talk to each other over short distances has changed how we use our phones, computers and MP3 players. Since the technology hit shelves in 2000, at least 2 billion devices have become Bluetooth-enabled, according to the company.

    Sex, Lies and DVRs

The digital video recorder came of age this decade, offering TV watchers the chance to pause programming and resume the show at will, which meant — among other things — the power to skip commercials. Consumers bought them in droves. Today, some 33 million homes have DVRs, according to industry estimates. What’s been happening since is predictable — Americans are watching more television than ever. How much? A recent Nielsen study pegged it at 151 hours a month.

    Men Behaving Gladly

Men who won’t ask for directions collectively breathed a huge sigh of relief in 2000. That’s when the accuracy of Global Positioning System technology was significantly improved for public use. Since then, GPS has become so popular that it’s a standard feature in many new cars.

    We Kike To Watch

The bulky machine that broke your back. The protruding mike. The cassette tape. That was how video cameras used to be. The past decade, however, saw cameras…

  • Castor Oil Packs for Hepatitis C

Castor oil packs have been used for centuries to improve liver function. Discover why many people with Hepatitis C are benefiting from this age-old folk treatment.

    by Nicole Cutler, L.Ac.

Recommended by some holistic healthcare practitioners to enhance circulation, promote healing and improve liver function, castor oil packs have a long history of traditional medical use dating back to ancient Egypt. Making and applying a castor oil pack gives those with Hepatitis C a proactive way to reduce their symptoms and help their body better manage this viral infection of the liver.

    Holistic Approach
A holistic approach to any illness is recognizing the innate, natural healing potential of the body. For someone with Hepatitis C, this belief means that as the entire body becomes healthier, it is better able to combat this virus and contend with its effects.

Since the liver of someone with Hepatitis C is often consumed with trying to fight and eliminate the virus, it has fewer resources to perform its regular functions – like detoxification and elimination. Thus, a holistic strategy for someone with Hepatitis C may be to support and facilitate detoxification and elimination. Accomplishing these goals contributes to the healthfulness of the entire body so that the virus can be more efficiently targeted.

    Circulation Enhancement
Castor oil is derived from the castor bean (Ricinus communis) and was once taken orally as a laxative. However, castor oil is toxic and its modern day use is restricted to topical preparations on unbroken skin. When applied on the skin directly over the liver, warm castor oil packs can be beneficial to those with Hepatitis C because it is a strong circulation stimulant. This is helpful because:

    · Increased circulation will reduce inflammation.

    · Increased circulation will ease pain.

    · Increased circulation will facilitate the detoxification process.

    · Increased circulation will support toxin elimination by improving bile flow.

    · Castor oil’s increase in circulation boosts the production of white blood cells that help fight the Hepatitis C virus.

    · Increased circulation helps with drainage of toxins to the lymph system.

How to Make a Warm Castor Oil Pack
Castor oil packs are made by soaking a piece of flannel or un-dyed wool in castor oil and placing it on the skin. The flannel is covered with a sheet of plastic, and then a hot water bottle or hot pack is placed over the plastic to heat the castor oil-soaked poultice. More specific directions are described below:

    1. Place the flannel or wool in a container and soak it in castor oil so that it is saturated, but not dripping.

    2. Put the saturated cloth over the liver. The liver is located in the upper right portion of the abdomen – partially above the ribs and partially beneath them.

    3. Cover the saturated cloth with plastic wrap. This will reduce some of the messiness and facilitate the oil’s absorption into the skin.

    4. Put a hot water bottle or hot pack over the plastic wrap. Leave it in place for at least 20 minutes (up to an hour) and rest with the castor oil concoction on your abdomen.

    5. Upon removing the pack, cleanse your skin with a dilute solution of water and baking soda.

    6. The pack can be kept in the refrigerator in a covered container and reused many times.

    7. Notorious for being thick, messy and staining, many people use separate, old sheets and clothing when bringing out their castor oil packs.

Castor oil packs can increase the body’s ability to fight infection, relieve hepatic pain and inflammation while aiding in detoxification – at a fraction of the cost of similarly intended holistic health therapies. An effective technique for improving liver function, castor oil packs are a good way for those with Hepatitis C to boost their body’s natural healing potential.

IRMCC COLORS 300x155 Scosche tapStick II Shows off iPod Shuffle 3rd Gens ColorsFor those not familiar with the Scosche tapSTICK, it is a case that transforms your iPod Shuffle 3rd gen into a device that you can control with buttons on a case. The tapStick will now be offered in a clear shatterproof polycarbonate case, allowing Gen 3 iPod shuffle owners to show off the shuffle’s vibrant colors. The tapSTICK returns play/pause, volume and track control to the body of the Gen 3 shuffle basically undoing what makes the device so unique but yet oddly makes it more user friendly now. This will also be debuting at CES 2010, however their is no word on pricing or availability. But I assume it would retail around $29.95, just as the current tapStick retails for now.

  • Rumor Has It: January Event “Confirmed,” More on the Tablet

I’m really sorry. I do realize these tablet rumors are becoming tiresome, but you know, don’t you, that they’re going to get a lot worse in the coming weeks as we approach January 26 and Apple’s not-yet-officially-confirmed-but-unofficially-will-definitely-happen media event?

The latest tidbits come from Fox News’ Clayton Morris and (somewhat unexpectedly given how he should know better) an ex-Apple, ex-Google China senior executive. Let’s get started…

Fox’s Clayton Morris writes that he’s been talking with his very own private mole inside Apple HQ about the as-yet unconfirmed media event (first reported by the Financial Times) and has this to offer us:

While nothing official has been handed down from the notoriously tight-lipped company, my source took the Financial Times report one step further by saying this event will focus on the mobility space, meaning we’ll see something related to the iPhone/Touch product line. Could this be the announcement of the mythical Apple tablet we’ve been hearing so much about?

Well if it isn’t, if El Jobso doesn’t announce a tablet, if, instead, the whole event is nothing more than a high-profile sales pitch for a slightly-higher-capacity iPod shuffle, I’ll be torn between shedding bitter tears, or laughing myself sick. Maybe both.

“Focus on the mobility space,” eh? How charmingly vague. You have to wonder why these “sources” are always so…unhelpful. I mean, a real, genuine, worthwhile secret mole should be leaking specific, valuable information, right? That’s what moles are supposed to do, it’s in the job description. But when it comes to Apple’s moles, this just doesn’t happen, does it? Instead, they offer infuriatingly nebulous non-information that seems, if nothing else, perfectly suited to further fuelling speculation, rather than offering, y’know, facts.

I think of these sources as the tech community’s version of spirit mediums who, after (rolling eyes) ‘miraculously’ connecting with the dearly departed, then bafflingly waste that rare and wonderful chance at communication by playing an odd game of Guess Who? “Focus on the mobility space” might as well be “I see a man with thinning hair whose name begins with something sounding like Ste…”

I have a modest theory; these “sources” are tasked with providing fuzzy details to media hacks. It’s all part of a precise marketing strategy, pioneered by Jobs, designed to get the flames of the rumor mill burning brightly. It probably saves a fortune on actual advertising.

    A Little Less Vague

Also fanning the flames today is a report by Engadget’s Richard Lai who writes that former Google China president Kai-fu Lee has claimed privileged insider-knowledge of the mythical tablet. Lee’s comments appear on Lee’s microblogging site and, translated by GadgetMix, read in part:

The Apple Tablet looks like a bigger iPhone that sports an awesome UI packed in a beautiful 10.1-inch screen. The tablet combines the functions of both netbook and kindle, an ebook reader. It has virtual keyboard for text entry and a webcam for video conferencing

    Lai adds:

We’ve heard a lot of this same noise before: sub-$1000 price, an iPhone-like appearance, 10.1-inch multitouch screen, video conferencing, cellular connectivity, 3D graphics and virtual keyboard. What really got our attention is Lee’s link with Foxconn — the Apple OEM is one of the main contributors to Lee’s post-Google investment venture, Innovation Works, so there’s a good chance that Lee’s spoken to someone overlooking the manufacturing of a certain Apple device.

Kai-fu Lee also adds in his blog that “Steve Jobs will be introducing this product in January,” lending credence to Clayton Morris’ sepulchral source at Cupertino.

Well, that’s it — another day, another round of rumors. Make of them what you will. As far as I can see, we don’t know anything more now than we did when we reached for our hot lava java this morning, but, please, don’t shoot the messenger. At least this specumor (I’m enjoying my portmanteau’s; this one’s a cross between speculation and rumor) is bolstered by what appears to be sort-of-credible evidence.

Honestly, though, January 26 can’t arrive fast enough. I’m thoroughly sick of all this guessjecture.

UPDATE: Looks like my modest theory is correct, if Fake Steve is to be trusted.

The Top Gear Cool Wall ranks cars in four categories, from Seriously Uncool to Sub Zero (which is really, really cool), using a highly unscientific method that no one can get an exact grip on. If you’re hooked on trying to figure out whether a car is beyond uncool, like the Fiat Panda, or Sub Zero, like the Ford GT, then there’s an app for that.

It’s called “Cool Wall,” and you can get it over at Apple’s iTunes store. Looks like TG may have released the app before it was finished cooking, however: it’s $1.99 and so far, the reviews are mixed, with purchasers complaining about things like cropped pictures of cars. The app page claims updates are on the way, but buyer beware in the meantime. Thanks for the tip, Bryan!

  • Is the other Schumacher pondering a F1 comeback too?

Ralf Schumacher entered Formula One six years after his brother Michael, with the same Jordan team that introduced his sibling to the grid. That’s about where the similarities end. After an 11-year career with Williams, Jordan, and Toyota, Ralf retired in 2007 and ended up in the DTM series. He was a good driver and had a decent car early in his Williams tenure, but he simply didn’t have the edge. He ended up with fewer race wins, six, than his brother did World Championships.

Now that Michael has returned to the circus, it looks like Ralf wants his turn under the Big Top again. Ralf said, “I know that my reputation suffered during my time at Toyota but I left that behind me. I know what I can do and I feel ready to do it again.” Having turned down a race seat with one of the new teams, other rumors suggest that he’s talking to Toro Rosso, where he would replace Jaime Alguersuari and partner Sebastien Buemi. Toro Rosso and Renault – and Sauber, depending – are essentially the only teams who have openings and a chance of giving Ralf a car he can do something with.

Does the classic rumble of V-Twin appeal to you, but find full-dresser’s not your style? Buy a Buell. Now. There will be no more, and stocks are dwindling. Despite that, they’re not emptying the tank fast enough for Harley Davidson. With the very last Buell ever produced now taking up residence at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum – an unfortunate fate for something that’s so glorious to actually use – it’s fire-sale time on the 1,300 or so new Buells left. To froth sales, Harley has set up a bike finder to put you on the two-wheeler of your dreams and get your money in its pocket.

Further sweetening the pot are aggressive incentives from H-D to dealers, meaning you’re not likely to get a bad deal. Unless you’re a chump.

    half-life2-geometry-wars-project-natal

A new video emerged this week which supposedly showcases an individual playing Half Life 2 using Project Natal, Microsoft’s upcoming motion control platform for the Xbox 360. The video is blurry and crudely recorded but you can see places where the player is moving objects in the game by gesturing with his hands. This Half Life 2 video is eerily similar to another rumored Project Natal video which surfaced late last week. In this other, earlier video, the same person in what looks to be the same environment is reportedly demoing Geometry Wars. Check out both videos and let us know what you think of these potentially early demos of Project Natal.

X092_2pcsHere we go again with another dual interface flash drive, but this time USB 3.0 is no where to be found. The Team X092 comes sporting both a USB 2.0 and eSATA interface. Of course with the eSATA interface, the drive should be rather quick and it is thanks to four data channels feeding separate flash memory modules.

The eSATA interface can see read speeds of 110MB/s and write speeds of 40MB/s. That’s not nearly as quick as the USB 3.0 flash drive from yesterday, but it’s still faster than standard ol’ USB 2.0. Team says it will only take 42 seconds to move a 4.5GB file. There will be 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB flavors available shortly at yet-to-be-announced prices. [Team via SlashGear]

  • Want to See Google’s New Phone On YouTube? Be Patient, Or Persistent [MediaMemo]

nexus one previewGoogle won’t officially unveil its “Nexus One” smartphone until Tuesday, when it has scheduled an “Android Press Gathering“. There are plenty of descriptions and images of the phone floating around the Web, though — a result of Google’s decision to “dogfood” the device with employees.

And now, some video. Yesterday a 10-minute clip of what appears to be someone taking the phone through its paces popped up on the Web. There’s no sound, and the device appears to be configured for French speakers, so if you’re an American with a short attention span, I’m not sure what the appeal would be. But some of you are going to want to watch it, anyway.

This would normally be the place where I’d embed the relevant YouTube video. But this one video that Google (GOOG) doesn’t want appearing on its video site, and it is pulling the footage down as quickly as it can. (This is where I imagine the Viacom guys chortling and rubbing their hands).

That said, you can find the clip without much effort, particularly if you search other video sites that aren’t owned by Google. Have at it, if that floats your boat.
