  • Espresso’s Sense UI Captured on Video

While most of us were putting the finishing touches on wrapping gifts, some lucky fella spent his Christmas Eve playing with the new Espresso build of HTC’s Sense UI on his Hero.  And in the spirit of giving, they decided to record the experience.  While the video is somewhat shaky and jumpy, we still get a sense (see what we did there?) for how HTC has evolved their experience.

CES 2010 is merely days away so we’re hoping to see this in an official capacity soon!

Thanks to all who sent this in to us.

  • Peek gets a Facebook app, sort of

Peek devices are usually quite resolute in their single-purpose ways, but it looks like things are starting to change — the company is beta testing Facebook integration called PeekSocial. Once you install the app on your Facebook account, you’ll be able to update your status easily, and you’ll also receive periodic emails that pull content from your newsfeed. Yeah, it’s a little hacky — how about enabling support for a real Facebook app, Peek?

    [Thanks, Devon]

  • Rumor du Jour: G1 to Get Android 2.0 (Or Higher)

T-Mobile G1 owners have been waiting on pins and needles for the day they learn that their beloved sweetheart handset will no longer be supported with software updates.  At first, the rumor was that Donut might not make it.  Now we’re hearing, and even somewhat thinking, that Android 2.0 (Eclair) will not fit or run well on the device.  Along comes a rumor that could put us at ease for just a little bit longer…

AndroidSPIN is reporting that the T-Mobile G1 will be updated to Android 2.0/2.01 in the near future. There’s no mention of how or where the news comes from specifically, but according to them, an OTA update has been prepped to roll out.

The update will be at least Android 2.0 but more likely Android 2.0.1 as both versions have already been prepared as OTA updates.  An anonymous source of ours has confirmed that both the Android 2.0 and the Android 2.0.1 are in the hands of some very fortunate people.  Nothing can be released just yet due to Non Disclosure reasons.

So, G1 owners… how does that news sit with you?!

  • How long would I have?

I don’t know if this question has ever been asked before…so, my apologies if it’s repetitive. I got to thinking about all the adjustment-type of regimens that diabetics are saddled with; the actual need, the life dependence on an item someone produces to keep you alive has humbled me. These past 6 months since I was diagnosed with Type 1 DM, my travels have been about learning. Never, until today, had I pondered the thought of what would happen if my insulin stopped. The supply of it, what if that stopped.

Never thought of that, before. So, here’s a question, if I may? How long would I have? I mean, how long would I have to look for more insulin? I imagine that would need some variables like carbohydrate intake per day, how much insulin I inject a day, something else? 27 units keeps me fine for around 150 carb’s a day. That, I imagine I’d have lower quite quickly. All I’ve ever really "needed" to survive was food. That’s changed.

  • Apple’s MobileMe service conks out for three hours

macdownjpgUpdate: As of 3:00 PM Pacific time on Sunday, MobileMe is back online for me, but Apple’s MobileMe status page still lists several MobileMe services as being down.

Around 1:00 PM Pacific time on Sunday, Apple’s MobileMe suite of cloud applications stopped working for me. MobileMe syncs customers’ iPhones with their personal computers. It also serves Web-based email, calendar, and address book applications that stay in sync with customers’ computers and phones.

threehoursjpgAccording to one Twitter post, it’s been down for some users for three hours now. The volume of Twitter updates in multiple languages in the past hour suggests this isn’t a small outage.

Apple’s PR hotline sent me an auto-response, “Our offices are closed for the holidays.” But if I hear back, I’ll update this post with any info Apple provides.

index-contacts-20091009MobileMe, for which Apple charges $99 per year, grew from the company’s .Mac (pronounced “dot-mac”) services. Usually it works — I use it daily — but MobileMe got off to a bad start last year with frequent outages. So much so that even Apple fan Walt Mossberg declared it “too flawed to be reliable.”

MobileMe beats the ad-supported Google Apps and Microsoft’s free Windows Live in some ways, most notably its browser-based replications of the familiar mail, calendar and contact apps built into Apple computers. But for a hundred bucks a year in 2010, shouldn’t it be bulletproof?

  • Apple iPhone inexplicably unavailable for NYC via online orders

    Picture 2

This one has us scratching our heads. When attempting to order the iPhone for zip codes in Los Angeles, San Francisco and other major cities, everything seems perfectly fine. However, NYC zip codes, more specifically Brooklyn, removes the iPhone as an option for online sales. We called several stores in the NYC area, including one in Brooklyn, and the sales reps said stock was perfectly fine. So we chatted up online sales and they told us it wasn’t available in that area and, as noted by the image below, they couldn’t tell us why:

Consumerist has a slightly different twist in this story — the rep they spoke with said it’s because NYC isn’t ready for the iPhone. That’s fine and most New Yorkers would agree, but that doesn’t explain the sufficient stock available in stores throughout that area. One Consumerist reader wrote a comment saying that “Due to massive fraud in online ordering, iPhones are not available online only.” Now that is definitely interesting, but you can order an iPhone online if you have a non-NYC zip code. We’re digging deep and trying to sort this one out for you guys and we’ll definitely bring the updates as they come.

  • VIDEO: Honda HSV-010 caught testing at Suzuka

Honda HSV-010 – Click above for image gallery

With the exception of a singular shot and a brief press release, Honda is predictably mum on details about its GT500-bound NSX replacement. Thankfully, one fan in Japan was able to snag shots of the HSV-010 undergoing testing at the Suzuka Circuit ahead of its first race in May, and judging by the pics below and videos after the jump, SuperGT fans have plenty to be excited about.

Based on reports from the ground, Honda will campaign four HSV-010s in the 2010 season, each of which was testing at the racetrack late last week (check the differing window banners in the gallery below). The driver line-up hasn’t been officially disclosed yet, but the new coupes will bear the numbers 8, 18, 32 and 100 at their debut May 20-21 at Suzuka.

Powering the HSV-010 (which stands for Honda Sports Velocity) is a 3.4-liter V8 mounted in front and sending power to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox — the same transmission used by Nissan and Toyota on its GT500 contenders. The styling bears some resemblance to prototypes that ran the Nurburgring in recent years, but it’s decidedly curvier, more aerodynamic and — to our eyes — damn sexy, particularly in matte black with the angry LED eyebrows.

As previously reported, Honda has no plans to sell a road-going version of the HSV-010 to consumers. Instead, the Big H has found a loop-hole in the SuperGT regulations that allows the automaker to campaign a car in the series that’s “production feasible” but not in production. So unless Honda reverses course and pulls an LFA, the closest you’ll come to seeing and hearing the all-new NSX is in the videos after the jump.

UPDATED with more videos after the jump and high-res images in the gallery below. Thanks Enzo!

  • Always tired?

Does anybody else find that no matter how much sleep they get they are always exhausted? Could this be diabetes related or something else? I come home at the end of the day totally wiped. I always mean to do stuff, but it never happens because I have absolutely zero energy. I’m sure part of it is my job. My new para mentioned to me the other day she has never been so exhausted after work (she said she even fell asleep during a card game with friends.) I know my students are very demanding, but I’m wondering if there is something more to it. Even on weekends I’m totally zapped. Has anybody else felt like this and found a trick that works?
  • An updated guide to Facebook privacy: December 2009 edition

By now, most Facebook users are aware by some means or another that the company has made changes to its privacy settings. Though these updates have largely been controversial, there are a handful of changes that are actually good and some that are at least neutral. They are also just different enough (but in a subtle way) to make our previous Facebook privacy guide a little outdated, so we thought we would go over some of the settings again to help our readers lock down their profiles as they please.

The good news: you can still divide up your friends into lists—as many or as few lists as you like! As we discussed in our previous privacy guide, the reason you want to do this is so you can divvy up permissions (which we will show you later), and you can do this by going to your Friends > All Friends > Create a new list.

  • Can Jolicloud Win In A Chrome OS Netbook World?

Only the truly adventurous are running Chrome OS on their computers today. But it’s the elephant in the room whenever Jolicloud, an ambitious netbook operating startup, is discussed.

We first covered the startup in late 2008, when netbooks were mostly running Widows XP or Linux. In June, when the first invites to Jolicloud went out, it looked like a winner.

But less than a month later Google announced Chrome OS, their own operating system tailored to netbooks.

Jolicloud soldiered on, raising a high profile $4.2 million venture round and finally, earlier this month, releasing a public beta of the product at Le Web in Paris.

I caught up with CEO Tariq Krim and Director Partnerships Brenda O’Connell backstage at Le Web and asked them how Jolicloud would compete with Chrome OS.

Krim doesn’t have a full answer, but he says that part of the answer is Jolicloud’s focus on partner services like Dropbox. Google will rely mostly or entirely on Google services to run Chrome OS, although you’ll be able to access website services.

Jolicloud netbooks will be able to run local high definition video, which is hard to do over the browser today. And with services like dropbox users can store files locally on their netbooks and sync them to the cloud. Chrome OS users won’t be able to store files locally on their machine, other than via offline browser access.

It’s not clear Krim believes that’s much of an advantage, though. He says in the interview that hardware is becoming unimportant and that people will start to spend that money on cloud services instead.

Jolicloud is negotiating partnerships with hardware manufacturers to ship their OS directly with devices. Eventually consumer decisions will say whether there’s a place for Jolicloud in a suddenly crowded netbook OS market. Krim, who has fought Google successfully before with Netvibes (which competes with iGoogle), seems reasonably optimistic.
