  • American Idol Winner Lee DeWyze and Simon Cowell’s Goodbye

Lee DeWyze is crowned as the Ninth American Idol winner. When he was asked why he thought he would be the next winner, “Because there’s a time and place for everything, and this is my time and my place,” answered the mild-mannered salesman from Mount Prospect, Illinois.  “I’m just happy, man. I’ve never been happier in my life. I appreciate everything everybody has done,” said the 24-year-old American Idol. He beated Crystal Bowersox of Elliston, Ohio. Both contestants auditioned in Chicago. DeWyze sang “Hallelujah”, “The Boxer” and “Beautiful Day” last May 25. He won the majority of the viewer’s votes with less than two percent of the votes separating them.

The finale was like no other as it is also Simon Cowell’s last appearance as a judge on American Idol. Paula Abdul took Cowell’s hand and led him on stage. “I didn’t think I was going to be this emotional,” said Cowell. “I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support, the fun and your sense of humor. The truth is, everyone asks who’s going to replace me as the next judge. The truth is, you guys are the judges of this show, and you’ve done an incredible job over the years.

  • New iPhone app ‘Safe Driver’ ready to inform parents about your driving habits!

iPhone 3GSSoftware company Dangerous Decisions now offers Safe Driver — an iPhone app that enables owners to keep tabs on its employees who drive around in company vehicles.

This program uses the iPhone’s GPS transponder and accelerometer to measure and record vehicle acceleration, braking, cornering, and speed. Parameters can be set up by booting up the software, driving with the iPhone in the car, and saving the results. Parents, managers, and other persons in authority immediately get an e-mail or a text message if the driver exceeds any of the saved parameters. Detailed reports indicating the route driven, top speed, and other violations, will also be sent through email. Dangerous Decisions has designed the program to encourage safe driving. When drivers reach 95% of any preset limit, they are warned by a flashing amber light and an audible tone. As soon as they break the parameter, the application will flash red and will emit a different tone. The basic Safe Driver application can be downloaded for free, but the Pro version, which costs $24.99, enables the administrator to customize parameters for various vehicles. Dangerous Decisions recommends that the iPhone be placed on a cradle or dock to prevent it from falsely recording excessive movement.

  • Students Overwhelmingly Don’t Like Kindle As A Textbook Replacement Option

Amazon pitched its Kindle Dx as a perfect replacement from having to lug around heavy textbooks in college, but it seems that the drawbacks to the technology have students pining for the old textbooks (found via Slashdot). In fact, in a survey after using the Kindle Dx for a while, “80 percent of MBA students who participated in Amazon’s pilot program said they would not recommend the Kindle DX as a classroom study aid…” And it’s not that they don’t like ebooks. The same report notes that “more than 90 percent liked it for pleasure reading.” Apparently not being able to “scribble notes in the margins, easily highlight passages or fully appreciate color charts and graphics” is sort of a pain for educational settings. Who knew?

  • German antitrust regulators have blocked Magna’s takeover of Karmann’s roof division

Karmann Polo Cabrio ConceptTo avoid a scenario where there’s a lack of competition, Magna International Inc.’s planned takeover of bankrupt supplier Wilhelm Karmann GmbH’s roof division was blocked by German antitrust regulators.

Last Wednesday, Andreas Mundt, president of the German Federal Cartel Office (FCO), said that the market in Europe for convertible roof systems is “already highly concentrated.” He thinks that a Magna-Karmann tie-up would mean that there would only be two big providers. They worry that if the acquisition were allowed, the market for convertible roofs would be dominated by Magna/Karmann and Webasto. The Germany-based Webasto had recently acquired the roof unit of German supplier Edscha. Mundt said that it’s probable that the lack of competition would lead to higher prices. In 2009, the value of Europe’s convertible roof business was about 600 million euros (about $733 million). In a March interview with Automotive News Europe, Guenter Apfalter, president of Magna International Austrian unit Magna Steyr, was asked if carmakers were concerned about the potential lack of competition. He said that the OEMs, which make convertible cars, are actually supportive of the deal. He added that the OEMs think that the industry needs a “strong company in the roof business with a strong financing backing.”

  • TGW Launches Completely New AS/RS Crane

    11/19/2009

TGW Mechanics GmbH has nearly 30 years of experience in the construction of stacker cranes for automated storage and retrieval applications which has now been used to develop a completely new version of the Mustang single-mast device. With the Mustang evolution the Austrian market leader for automatic mini-load cranes created a new device that combines well-proven technologies with fundamentally new approaches of handling machine engineering.

Since the early 1980s TGW Mechanics, headquartered in Wels, Austria, has been engineering stacker cranes in lightweight design for automated storage and retrieval applications (AS/RS). The company has implemented more than 3,600 mini-load handling machines since 1996. Producing more than 300 mini-load cranes per year makes TGW a global market leader. “In the last 6 years we clearly noticed a trend towards absolute high performance applications”, says Christoph Wolkerstorfer, Director of Product Development at TGW Mechanics. “In this period of time we implemented more than 1,000 Mustang single-mast cranes which are particularly suitable for high performance applications worldwide.” In order to meet the increased performance requirements, TGW’ cranes had to be adapted to satisfy the highest demands on construction engineering and technical complexity.

Lightweight Design Reduces Weight by 25 %

Now TGW concentrated the long experience in the field of high performance applications on the further development of their stacker crane technology and are about to launch the new Mustang evolution. “The Mustang evolution still uses the same lightweight construction design as the former Mustang version, combined with newer technologies and engineering approaches that are totally new in stacker crane construction,” adds Wolkerstorfer. “This way we created a handling machine that offers considerable advantages, especially with respect to energy efficiency.” The Mustang evolution is a single-mast crane with a maximum payload of 100 kg (220 lbs) and an optimum height of 12 m (39 ft). These height and weight specifications meet the requirements of more than 70 % of all AS/RS solutions.”

The Mustang evolution uses aircraft construction concepts, reducing its overall weight by about 25 %. Much of this comes from the new construction design of the mast, where specially rolled profiles, consistently adapted material thickness and high-strength bolted connections make the new mast three times stiffer yet lighter than with the former Mustang version. The chassis, chassis frame, and lifting unit were reinforced and re-engineered using this weight-optimised design.

Improved Centre of Gravity for Better Distribution of Loads

“Further enhancements in the Mustang evolution come from improvements to the crane’s centre of gravity and better distribution of loads to the running wheels”, adds Christoph Wolkerstorfer. Positioning the drive units at the front end of the chassis and lowering the control cabinet helped to adjust the centre of gravity. The Mustang evolution is now a “front wheel drive and low-slung” crane so to speak.

The combination of the higher stiffness of the mast, the improved centre of gravity, and the friction wheel drive at the bottom rail allows the Mustang evolution to reach maximum speeds of 6 m/s (19.7 ft/s), even with a height of 12 m (39 ft). Combined with a lifting acceleration of 3 m/s2 (9.8 ft/s2) and a maximum lifting speed of 3 m/s (9.8 ft/s), the Mustang evolution is the new standard for high performance in the largest range of automated storage and retrieval applications.

  • New Thinner Spring Applied Brake Series – MCNB

The small spring applied brake series from Ogura (models MCNB 2, 5, and 10) have been redesigned and will now have a thinner profile. The brakes overall reduction in thickness is around 30%. Advances in friction material have allowed the brakes to maintain their same torque rating while eliminating the need for higher force springs and a correspondently higher wattage coil. The new thinner spring applied holding brakes are ideal for the servo motor and robotics industries where size and weight is always a concern. Since less steel is used in the coil shell and less copper in the windings, cost of the brakes are also lower than the current MCNB series. On some of the models, the outside diameter has been slightly reduced but all of the models have the same through whole mounting dimensions as the current MCNB brakes, so brake models will be interchangeable
    .
Ogura has been producing clutches and brakes since 1938. Over that time, we have developed over 5,000 different models of clutches and brakes. Although Ogura primarily produces electromagnetic clutches and brakes, we also produce magnet particle, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and a variety of specialty products. Ogura is the world’s largest manufacturer of electromagnetic clutches and brakes. Current manufacturing capacity is over 30 million units per year. To provide localized support, we have fourteen manufacturing plants spread throughout the world in Asia, The Americas, and Europe. All manufacturing facilities are ISO recognized and conform to the ISO 9001;2008, ISO 140001, and ISO/TS 16949.
