Honda Motor Co. has taken a look at China’s technology and massive resources and now plans to develop electric car batteries in China, according to Honda CEO Takanobu Ito.
In Southern China, Ito told reporters that a breakthrough is required to be able to carry the zero-emission cars into the mainstream. Ito had been in Southern China to announce a plan to raise Guangqi Honda’s annual production capacity by a third to 480,000 units. Honda is likely to lag behind rivals Nissan Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp., which has partnered with electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc. Ito forecasts that electric cars would be able to go mainstream in 10-20 years. For the next several years, Ito said that Honda will be concentrating on hybrids and other fuel-efficient vehicles. Honda is mulling over plans to bring electric cars in limited numbers to the US, Europe and Japan; however, it has yet to find a strategic partner that would commit to developing batteries for the vehicles. Honda actually already has a joint venture with Japan’s GS Yuasa Corp to work on lithium-ion batteries for hybrid cars. Honda and GS Yuasa have an agreement that if the need arises, they could work on electric car batteries as well. GS Yuasa is in a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors Corp. for the development and production of electric car batteries.

EDITOR WES RAYNAL: This is one of the more underrated sporty utes in my opinion–if you can get your head around the notion of a sporty ute in the first place.
I like the curvy sheetmetal; it looks cool and aggressive. The FX50 is a solid driver, too. The structure is robust, the V8 has great power–this thing is fast!–and sounds like a hot rod. And where the old FX suspension could beat you up, this car feels softer. Not too soft, but softer nonetheless. The sport mode didn’t do much for me; it just seemed to make the ride harder without helping the handling. Just one mode in a properly setup suspension would be better. I could also easily live without the lane-departure warning.
The dash reminds of the Infiniti G series and boy, are there ever a lot of gadgets to play with. The room in the back is decent.
Options: Sport package including continuous damping control with auto and sport modes, rear active steer, sport-style front seats, driver’s seat with power bolster adjustment and thigh support for driver and front passenger, dark-tinted headlights, side air vents, lower side trim, solid magnesium paddle shifters ($3,000); technology Package including lane-departure warning, lane-departure prevention, intelligent cruise control, distance-control assist, intelligent brake assist with forward collision warning, front precrash seat belts, rain-sensing front windshield wipers, adaptive front lighting system, auto-leveling front headlights ($2,900); aluminum roof rails crossbar ($325); vehicle alarm impact sensor ($135)
Kruse Inc., the auction company that sold the famous William Harrah car collection and has been synonymous with auctioning enthusiast automobiles since the 1970s, has lost its licenses in its home state.
The Indiana Auctioneer Commission ruled on Tuesday to revoke both of Kruse Inc.’s licenses, and the company has to wait seven years to apply for new ones, said Kelly Butters, a spokeswoman for the Indiana Attorney General’s Office.
Dean Kruse, the president of the auction house, has had his personal license suspended indefinitely. He can apply for reinstatement in two years. He and his company were fined a total of $70,000.
A message left at Kruse Inc., which is based in Auburn Ind., was not immediately returned Wednesday evening.
Kruse has appeared to have been in trouble since last year, when reports surfaced of consigners (sellers) at auctions not getting paid, and buyers not receiving their cars. He told AutoWeek last summer the financial woes were the result of a down economy and cash-flow problems.
The ruling is a stunning fall for a company that helped grow the popularity of auctions and collecting cars among enthusiasts. In addition to selling the Harrah collection for $41 million spread out over three auctions, Kruse also claims to have sold the first car for $1 million in cash, a 1934 Duesenberg, and Dean Kruse has presided over more than 5,000 auctions, the company Web site said. He also is known for an impressive personal collection, and has been profiled in AutoWeek for his extensive array of cars.
Terms of the ruling are not final, but have been agreed on by Kruse, his company and state officials. A written ruling is expected as soon as this week.
“This agreement is satisfactory and this remedies the situation,” Butters said. “An important aspect of this is getting the consigners repaid.”
It’s unclear what this means for Kruse’s auctions in other states. But the company and Dean Kruse cannot auction cars in Indiana or use those licenses elsewhere. Kruse held auctions in Arizona, Florida and Alabama earlier this year.
Additionally, Dean Kruse must submit quarterly reports certified by a CPA to the auction commission showing payments to consigners. If he applies for reinstatement and gets his license back, he has 18 months to have paid off all claims and civil penalties.
There’s just something about mobile operators that they love to make claims that are just sorta kinda true, while not really being true in spirit. This is the industry, of course, that has perfected “up to” marketing. As in “you should get speeds ‘up to’ xMbps” which, is technically true since any speed below that is covered, even if you’ll never get a speed anywhere near the defined “x.”
The other popular tactic is to lie about what kind of wireless network you’re actually offering. There were the claims that any wireless broadband solution was “WiMAX” back before the WiMAX standard was even set. So you started to get companies calling their solution “WiMAX” and then including all sorts of fine print about how it was “pre-WiMAX” and would certainly be upgraded to WiMAX once WiMAX actually existed.
Similarly, nearly a decade ago, when all the talk was about the upcoming “3G” networks, the mobile carriers all started pushing claims that they were offering “3G” when they absolutely were not. There were some interim “2.5G” steps, and some aggressive marketers just decided to round up. And, it looks like they’re doing that again. T-Mobile is going around claiming its HSPA+ network offers “4G speeds,” which, of course, is not to be confused with actual 4G. And, of course, this is an “up to” situation, where the network could, theoretically, sorta, kinda touch on “4G speeds,” but probably won’t for most people.

Since Volkwagen AG now has a 90% stake in Italdesign Giugiaro S.p.A., its customers might be worried that VW will be able to gain access to their confidential technology.
These customers, which include BMW AG, Proton and Hybrid Kinetic Motors Corp., may decide to go somewhere else but Chairman Giorgetto Giugiaro has given assurances of “100% secrecy.” Giugiaro said that in the future, Italdesign, Italy’s largest automotive design and engineering company, will work only for the VW Group but that it will complete all the ongoing projects for other carmakers. Continued after the jump!
Last Tuesday, a BMW spokesman said that it will continue with its contract with Italdesign, which has worked on the BMW-owned Mini’s Roadster and Coupe models. Enzo Pacella, Italdesign CEO, said that the company will work on the Mini derivatives for one more year.
Last January, Italdesign signed a 375 million euro ($462 million) multi-year deal to provide complete design and engineering for Hybrid Kinetic Motors’ eight new models.
Italdesign also still has a current contract with Proton to design the production version of the Emas minicar concept that was introduced at the Geneva show last March.
China’s Brilliance China Automotive and Chery Automobile are two of Italdesign’s customers that are likely to be affected by the VW deal since both compete against VW’s joint venture partners in China: FAW Group Corp. and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp.
The weakening euro is a boon for PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Volkswagen AG’s joint ventures in China as this lowers the cost of the imported components from Europe, according to analysts from Nomura Holdings Inc. Yankun Hou, one of those analysts, said that the biggest beneficiary to this windfall would be Dongfeng PSA, a partnership between France’s Peugeot and Hubei-based Dongfeng Motor Group Co. A report from Hou and Ming Xu (a fellow analyst) came out earlier this week, indicating that a 15% drop in the euro could raise Dongfeng PSA’s earnings by up to 5% or 250 million yuan ($36.6 million). In a phone interview, Hou (who is based in Hong Kong) said that importing components increases profit. Because of worries that a government debt crisis will spread from Greece, the euro dropped 14% compared to the US dollar this year and hit a four-year low on May 19. The decline of the euro makes European carmakers and auto-parts suppliers more competitive in China where the yuan has been pegged at about 6.83 to the US dollar for nearly two years. The pressure is also rising for China to revalue its currency. Hou explained that European auto joint ventures in China are more reliant on imported car parts than the rest in the industry. Hou added that China has yet to reach the economical scale to make high-tech components.
The curtain is rapidly falling on Hummer, General Motors’ ill-fated rough-and-tough brand of trucks and SUVs.
The final H3 rolled off the assembly line at 9:07 a.m. Central time on Tuesday at the Hummer factory in Shreveport, La., marking the end of production for the brand, a spokesman said.
Hummer is being wound down after a deal with a Chinese company fell apart in February. The dealer network, which would have given the Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. a foothold in the United States, remains the primary asset. There are about seven standalone dealerships, but many more are part of other dealerships with other brands.
It’s “highly unlikely” another deal would be struck, GM spokesman Nick Richards said. Letters were sent to dealers offering details of the wind down in April. The deal with Tengzhong was scuttled after it failed to achieve regulatory approvals in China.
The Louisiana factory will close no later than 2012, GM has said. The site is still building Chevrolet Colorados and GMC Canyons.
The remaining H3s assembled recently are actually under recall for a hood-louver problem that requires replacing the plastic caps that secure the parts.
Hummer staked its identity on all-terrain ability and a blocky design that stood out a bit in the midsize-SUV segment. But as gasoline prices rose several years ago and consumers began shifting to smaller crossovers, the brand was hit particularly hard. It has also suffered from a lack of fresh and diverse products in recent years. GM killed the H1, a military-inspired off-roader that defined the brand, after the 2006 model year. It’s since relied on two products, the H2 and slightly smaller H3, which came in SUV and truck versions. A Baja-styled HX concept was revealed at the 2008 Detroit auto show, but never came close to production.
General Motors
The Hummer H1 was a halo–and lightning rod for the brand before it was discontinued by General Motors.
Hummer has also been a lightning rod for publicity–good and bad. It drew the ire of environmentalists for its gas-hog image yet was frequently a ride of choice for celebrities. Hummers were also lauded as sturdy vehicles that helped in hurricane and natural-disaster relief efforts.
Current owners can still get their vehicles serviced at GM dealers, and the vehicles are still covered under warranty. Hummer has sold 1,336 vehicles this year, down from 2009’s tally of 4,019.
Mercedes-Benz Financial now provides dealers with mobile access to its point-of-sale dealer system — the first automotive finance company to do so. The Apple iPad has been made available to the company’s US dealer network.
This move makes Mercedes-Benz Financial as one of the first companies to use the consumer-oriented iPad as a mobile business tool. Dealership employees are anticipating the benefits of having the iPad as a tool, giving instant access to marketing programs for specific models, quicker turn time on the credit application process, and increased speed and efficiency on the return of lease vehicles. Andreas Hinrichs, Vice President of Marketing for Mercedes-Benz Financial, said that the iPad will raise the competitive edge of its dealers by “increasing their service levels through a more flexible financing process.” He said that the showroom floor will benefit from the iPad’s capabilities of “providing wireless mobility, information and flexibility on the showroom floor.” Mercedes-Benz Financial will first test iPad’s prowess as a business tool. It will soon distribute iPads to 40 chosen dealers around the US and will monitor iPad usage and collect feedback.

Game on Teusday night (USA vs Czech Republic) at Reliant Stadium was started in favor of the USA as they had an early lead by a nice set play by Stuart Holden that Maurice Edu had able to poke into the net.
Coach Bob Bradley elected his key players on this match. These players include Tim Howard, Carlos Bocanegra, Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Jay Demerit, Michael Bradley, Ricardo Clark, Benny Feilhaber, and Jozy Altidore.
But with the experimental lineup taking the game, the game started to pressure the Czech on the start of the game, but not well until the end.
The Czechs scored two goals just before the half.
Later on the game another set play made a point on USA made by Herculez Gomez as the finishing header which brought the game into a tie of 2-2.
However, though the deadlock lasted for quite some time, the USA still fell short of a win against the Czech Republic in the two late goals.
Most of the concerns was that the US was playing with a very inexperienced lineup in the match. And the US was described as to be looking very susceptible to the counter attack after their own pieces.
The Czech Republic took advantage of the poor defending of the USA to grab the winner.
Adidas Match Tracker [adidas.com] succeeds in demonstrating the incredibly rich and detailed dataset that is generated during each single international soccer game. Each meaningful event, such as each pass, each shot, each block or each goal, has been tracked and recorded for the full 90 minutes of a typical match. The Match Tracker thus provides sports statistics enthusiasts and data addicts alike the power to explore and analyze a match from a completely different perspective.
An interactive timeline at the bottom of the screens allows users to select or animate a specific timespan. Filters can be set between “blocked” or “off target” shots, “successful” and “unsuccessful” passes, “successful” and “unsuccessful” tackles, and of course goals. Views can be varied between a dual-tone heatmap and a pass-centric representation, while specific players can be filtered and compared.
The obvious attractiveness for sponsors, together with the future vision of “social visualization” (GoogleTV anyone?) and television spectators interacting with each other (and, why not, data?) during a sports game, will surely push this new area of visualization much further in the foreseeable future.
Another season of the Biggest Loser ended. There were four people left last night- MichaelVentrella, Ashley Johnston, Daris George, and Koli Palu.
Mike, the 526-pound Chicagoan beat out the others (Ashley and Daris) for the title of being “The Biggest Loser” this season at a total of 264 pounds. Awarded was the $250,000 grand prize. Koli on the other hand, still won the at-home $100,000 prize.
Bob Harper, trainer of the said show is giving his comments on the said show. He described it as one of the most emotionally-charged seasons of the reality show because the contestants are the heaviest ever to participate and that fact made its toll on them emotionally.
The emotional toll made its way particularly on Michael, who began on the show over 500 pounds, and after shedding more than 200 pounds, he realized that he was still obese.
The Biggest Loser Finale fans (primarily the BL fans and Bob fans) are all waiting for the upcoming season finale and are planing for a party. The said event would compose of full two hours of before and after pictures of people who have changed their lives.
Some of the earliest fears around ACTA concerned some of the earliest draft suggestions, that would increase the power of border patrol/customs officials to look for infringement at the border, including the possibility of searching your laptop or iPod for infringing content. While those provisions mostly seemed to drop out in the negotiations, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t still efforts to get closer to that sort of system. Mart Kuhn, at Public Knowledge, has an interesting post, looking at a bill in the Senate that would give customs the authority to determine if things crossing the border were “circumvention devices” as prohibited by the DMCA. Of course, as the article notes, determining what is and what is not a circumvention device is not particularly easy — as various lawsuits have demonstrated. So it’s quite questionable as to why anyone thinks border patrol agents should be involved in that process at all.
But a bigger issue is the same one at the heart of the debate over whether or not customs officials should have the right to search your laptop at the border. If the point of border patrol/customs is to prevent bad things from getting into the country, it’s pretty ridiculous to try to prevent software at the border, because that software has already totally crossed over the border via the still mostly borderless internet. So this whole thing seems like a charade to look for more ways to take away basic privacy rights in favor of an entertainment industry that is so afraid someone might infringe that it doesn’t realize trying to stop circumvention at the border won’t do anything other than cause serious hassles for legitimate travelers.
McNeil Consumer Health Care draws steps to remedy serious quality and safety lapses at their manufacturing facilities. They have been under investigation by the Food and Drug Administration due to the recalls they made for their over-the-counter drugs – Tylenol, Motrin and Benadryl. The company said in a statement, “McNeil is taking steps to bring its operation back to a level of quality that Johnson & Johnson demands of its companies, and that the public rightly expects of us, that we expect of ourselves.”
The steps include hiring an independent pharmaceutical consulting firm to identify corrective actions to improve quality and manufacturing systems at its Fort Washington facility. The company stated that they are also improving employee training in every part of the manufacturing and quality operations, and implementing new processes for conducting investigations on quality levels. They also stated that they have made organizational changes, however it was not specified. They also stated that they are working with an independent consultant on specific steps to improve overall quality which was termed as “remediation” period. There will also be a remediation committee responsible for implementing the plan for the plant and monitoring its effectiveness.
The FDA will be updated by the company on the progress of their plan for a month. There would also be an independent firm to help the company in making product decisions for the first months of the operation. McNeil said that they will conduct in-depth quality assessments for each product that the company manufactures to “ensure each product’s ability to meet specifications throughout its shelf life.”
It sounds like the issue of limited liability for BP is moot.
Both Reuters and The Guardian are reporting that according to legal documents and a close reading of the law, BP could be liable for some $4300/barrel that gushes into the water.
In the worst case scenario, says the Guardian, with oil gushing at over 100,000 barrels per day for more than two months, the oil giant could be looking at a $60 billion fine. Reuters arrives at a more conservative estimate of $10 billion.
Meanwhile, BP has already lost about $60 billion in market cap, but our guess is that if the ultimate fine were to be at the high end of the range, the stock would have a lot further to fall.
An excerpt from the Nightline interview of Jesse James came out. This is his first interview since the Academy Award winning actress Sandra Bullock filed for divorce.
James claimed that he never wanted to harm Sandra or his kids. But as like the previous videos of Jesse James, people around the world were not swayed from their “absolute dislike” of him.
At one point of the interview, Vicky Mabrey asks James about his feeling towards the fact that he is one of the most hated men in America. James replied the he thinks he is the most hated man not only in America, but in the world.
A footage from James’ Nightline interview leaks to the internet. The video includes Jesse James claiming that he wanted Bullock to catch him cheating on her. The scandal effectively ended the five-year relationship between the two.
James will also answer questions regarding the “Nazi salute” photo which is quite a topic on the web for days. There were comments regarding racism because of the said photo.
James talks about the pain of losing about Louis, the child that he and Sandra adopted.
The bulls mounted an extremely impressive run in the final minutes of the US trading day, but momentum appears to be stalling out after hours.
After initially surging, the Nikkei has given up the lion’s share of its gains.
S&P futures had been higher, but are now basically flat since the 4:00 PM ET close.
The world’s hottest measure of risk, the Aussie dollar, is also giving up its recent gains.
So what’s going on?
ForexLive points out that Ben Bernanke is speaking in Tokyo and made a comment about now wanting dollar-swap lines to be permanent. But that’s pretty minor, and his speech as a whole, which is about central bank independence, is pretty mild. Read the whole thing here.
If that’s all it takes to spook the market, we’re still on very fragile ground.
Meanwhile, Korea’s KOSPI, which the world is watching due to war tensions, is off just modestly.
For a roundup of what happened during the US trading day, see here.
Vegetarian eating is a healthy alternative but only if you eat in a healthy and balanced way. Yes, there are many health benefits to eating this way. Eating vegetarian makes sense from a good health and nutritional point of view.
Vegetarians eat plant foods like vegetables, fruits, and grain although some do not include onions, garlic and chives. Generally there are three styles of Vegetarianism based on other foods allowed as listed below:
• Vegans are the strictest – they abstain from all animal foods, dairy products and eggs. • Lacto vegetarians consume dairy products. • Ovolacto vegetarians supplements with eggs and dairy products
Prudent vegetarianism is highly beneficial. Studies show that vegetarians live longer, have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and register lower incidents of obesity, heart diseases, certain cancers, stroke and diabetes. These are not surprising as vegetarian diet contain less saturated fat, fewer calories, less sugar and more fibers.
Now before anybody starts it is important to understand how to plan a well balanced vegetarian diet. Pregnant women, teenagers and young children should seek proper nutritional guidance before embarking on it.
The main concern in a vegetarian diet is protein. It is needed to build body tissues and consists of units called amino acids. Compared to animal protein like meat, plant foods generally lack certain amino acids. Hence, vegetarians, especially vegans, must eat a variety of plant proteins to get a complete set of amino acids. Soyabeans, a high quality protein, and its products like tofu and soya milk may feature frequently in vegetarian meals.
Vitamin B12 also needs monitoring for its deficiency causes anemia. As animal foods are the only reliable sources of vitamin B12 substitutes like vitamin B12 enriched breakfast cereals are ideal. Furthermore, these cereals are also fortified with iron absorption; one must ensure an adequate supply of vitamin C in diet. Other good sources of iron are spinach, raisins and pulses. For non-dairy product eaters, calcium intake may be obtained from alternatives like sawi, spinach and kalian. If seafood is omitted, zinc required for the immune system is obtainable from whole grains, nuts and soyabeans.
Sprouts contain reproductive power that is of vital importance to human lives and their health. Germinated seeds enormously increase the nutritional value and digestibility. There is an amazing increase the nutritional value and digestibility. There is an amazing increase in nutrients in sprouted pulses as compared to their dried form. In the process of germination the vitamins, minerals and protein increase substantially with corresponding decrease in carbohydrate content. Cooked sprouts (steamed) are best to digest and avail maximum proteins.
Sprouts help in the growth of muscles and tissue of the body. They increase the resistance to diseases and play an important role in rejuvenation of cells.
Benefits of Vegetarian Eating
• Overweight people who have tried a vegetarian diet have lost weight and kept is off. • Diabetes achieves normal blood sugar levels, reducing insulin requirements. • People with high BP, diminished or eliminated their BP medications because BP was normalized. • People with high cholesterol showed lowered cholesterol levels. • In a majority of people with elevated homocyteine, levels were reduced, which is an improvement without the use of medication. • Overall endurance, strength, stamina, energy and sense of well-being achieved.

Good sports diet for a vegetarian?
Soccer starts in less than two months and I want to feel my best for tryouts. Any ideas of what to eat to get enough vitamins and minerals leading up to soccer? Thanks!
By the way, I still eat eggs and milk however I have very little so I’m closer to a vegan but not quite.
Awesome…another veggie soccer player! Glad to see that. First of all, regarding Dirtyleg’s answer: I don’t think she’s gonna EAT the ball. Sorry, I couldn’t resist that one. Anyway…
FRUIT is the ultimate food for the athlete. For one thing, it is the best source for vitamins(since you asked about that), and nearly good enough on minerals. I would include tender greens such as lettuce and celery for that.
Don’t believe the nonsense about protein. It is pretty much impossible not to have enough protein. To anyone who thinks that people like you and I lack protein, I would love to get on the soccer field with them myself, and have a little fun, if you know what I mean.
Listen, I know an athlete/trainer/doctor/ researcher/author/superb nutritional mind in his 50’s (who has recently written a book you should get) who trained professional athletes(including record-holders) for most of his life, and controlled and monitored their diets as well. I have attended many of his lectures, and even one of his fitness camps. He found overwhelmingly that a low-fat diet of raw fruits and veggies was best for athletes(and anyone else).
The man’s name is Douglas N. Graham, and his new book is The 80/10/10 Diet. You can get it from livingnutrition.com. I have been way into nutrition for a long time, and I think he is definitely the best, with the possible exception of his wife, Roz Gruben-Graham. I have read a lot about nutrition, and I think this book can take the place of all my other books. And I don’t make a claim like that lightly.
Anyway, I am a soccer player myself. It is easily my favorite sport. I am 33 now. I played all thru high school, including competitive, then life got in the way. But last fall I took up coaching my nephew’s U-8 boys team. Well, I like to be an active coach, working on the field with them. And doing this really lit the fire under me again to play. I even found some days to go down to the field and just workout by myself. I loved it!
I have been veggie for 11 years, and doing the fruit thing for about the last 4-5 years. Let me tell you, I am athletically better than ever. I am planning on getting back into college again soon to get a teaching credential, and while there, I now fully plan on trying out for the men’s soccer team!
My strength and stamina are better than ever, and my mind is sharper as well. I also don’t require as much sleep, and don’t get sick. I have to say, I like my chances. This diet has really helped. I make whole meals out of fruit every day, and consume about 2600 cals/day. There is plenty of everything you need(to go into all the specifics of that would require a whole book). And you were smart to ask about vits and mins, instead of going directly to protein and fat, like so many others.
Most Americans have a deficiency of vits, mins, and water, and an excess of protein, and fat. A fresh fruit and veg diet is perfect for that.
Listen, I really think you should get that book. His science is very solid, and he has a very logical, down-to-earth approach. And his emphasis is not just to be vegan, but to be athletic, too. I think it is just what you are looking for. If nothing else, you will get some great nutrition facts.
Or…..if all this sounds like too much, then I would just say INCREASE the PERCENTAGE of fresh fruit in your diet as much as you can stand. That’s all. Don’t be afraid to think of fruit as a main course, or even an entire meal. I know it is counter to American programming to think of it that way. It was a jolt for me, too. But it really works! I now do it all the time. The more you do it, the more it will help you.
Feel free to read some more of my answers on here. This kind of thing has come up a lot with fruit. That’s what most of my answers are about.
Good luck!
