  • Journalist to give lecture on injustice for literary festival

    Published May 20, 2010
By Loretto J. Hulse, Tri-City Herald staff writer

Learn how a history-making struggle between truth and justice changed the lives of dozens black soldiers at a free lecture tonight in Pasco.

Investigative journalist and author Jack Hamann of Seattle will present “Speaking Truth To Power: Modern Lessons from an Historic Injustice” at 7 p.m. on the HUB main stage at Columbia Basin College. His talk is part of the annual Mid-Columbia Literary Festival series.

Hamann will be talking about 43 soldiers, charged with rioting and the lynching of an Italian prisoner of war at Washington’s Fort Lawton, who endured the largest and longest Army court-martial of World War II.

The case — which received worldwide attention in 1944 — was prosecuted by Leon Jaworski, later to gain fame as the Watergate special prosecutor.

More than six decades later, Hamann and his wife, Leslie, found the previously top secret court-martial documents in the National Archives.

Their research led to a reversal of the convictions and an apology from the U.S. government to the soldiers who still were alive and their relatives.

The story is told in Hamann’s book, On American Soil: How Justice Became a Tragedy of WWII.

“It’s a very intriguing story,” said Maria Allan with CBC. “It was actually his wife who found the report which was key to the book.”

Allan serves on the selection committee for the Inquiring Minds Program of Humanities Washington.

“He spoke to (the committee) for just 20 minutes, and he had me then. I wanted to know more, I had to hear the rest of the story,” she said.

Hamann was chosen to be a speaker for the Inquiring Minds Program but also is coming for LitFest.

“I was still so fired up over hearing Hamann speak they said they just had to have him come,” she said.

On American Soil was Investigative Reporters & Editors’ book of the year in 2005.

The final speakers in the Community Lecture series are Bruce and Susan Mattley, who live near Walla Walla.

“Cowboys and Cowgirls in Story and Song,” sponsored by the Three Rivers Folk Life Society, will be at 7 p.m. June 17 at Mid-Columbia Library, 1620 S. Union St., Kennewick. Admission is free.

  • Tonight’s Litfest event adds historical perspective

    Published May 20, 2010
By the Tri-City Herald editorial staff

“Not only riveting, On American Soil is also essential reading for anyone concerned about the delicate balance between national security and individual rights.”

That’s what James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers, had to say about Seattle journalist Jack Hamann’s account of a little-known chapter in military history.

How we manage that balancing act in post-911 America will define us as a nation. Everyone ought to be concerned.

Hamann talks about his book tonight at Columbia Basin College. The lecture, “Speaking Truth to Power: Modern Lessons from an Historic Injustice,” is at 7 p.m. on the HUB mainstage.

Herald reporter Loretto Hulse’s story inside today’s Mid-Columbia section provides more details about Hamann’s investigation into the court-martial of 43 African American soldiers at Seattle’s Fort Lewis during World War II.

Hamann’s book won critical acclaim. More importantly, it won a belated verdict reversal for a group of Americans charged with rioting and lynching an Italian prisoner of war.

Consider this a nudge toward the Pasco campus for tonight’s talk, part of the Mid-Columbia Literary Festival. Hamann’s impressive historical work offers important lessons for today.

  • If This Is A Meltdown, Where’s Our Lehman?

    Jim Cramer Amanda Drury

The world market panicked today, as everyone scrambled for liquidity. That you know.

The question is: do we see a big disorderly crash from here? Clearly, a lot of folks right now think we do, and some have been saying so loudly.

    The question is: why?

There’s no major discernible reversal in economic sentiment, and there’s no Lehman (yet).

Indeed, as Mike O’Rourke of BTIG notes, in an evening note on “echo bubbles” and “echo panics,” this is definitely not 2008:

The markets never cease to amaze.  A large portion of the 83% rally from March 2009 through April 2010 was referred to as an “Echo Bubble.”  An echo bubble is a smaller bubble that emerges during the bounce after a larger bubble has crashed.  Investors are comfortable participating in such moves because they see familiar signposts within the prices, news and market developments.  We have not been among those who believe the recovery rally was an echo bubble.

Quite the contrary, we believe the U.S. has had many of the same problems post-bust as we had pre-bust.  Early on, the re-pricing merited taking the risk and finally acknowledging the problems placed us on a path to repairing them.  The selling that is occurring in the equity market today is an “Echo Panic.”  Investors see many of the familiar signposts of 2008, such as over-leveraged entities, only today they are governments as opposed to banks.  Other occurrences are risk spreads widening, government bailouts, shorts being banned and anti-market political rhetoric.  Deflation fears are re-emerging as commodities collapse.  There is massive de-risking and a flight to quality.  The list goes on, but despite the similarities, this is not Credit Crunch 2.0.

Well, at least none yet. On Wednesday afternoon, Cramer said we should wait for 48 hours to see if a Lehman occurs. If not, we’re in the clear.

By that measure, we’ve got about 15 hours to go…

Pontiac’s throwback appeal to its workers – Click above to watch videos after the jump

“What Americans want to know is you are doing your job.” That’s what Pontiac had to say to its plant workers with two videos made in the Seventies, when the brand that once built excitement was building up concern over foreign car sales. The message is a simple pep talk at the highest level, but with a riptide of martial tones: if Americans know “you’re fussy about installing wiring,” then they’ll keep buying Pontiacs and we can, essentially, repel the menace.

Obviously, it didn’t work. You can have a look at the failed (and at times, somewhat xenophobic) calls-to-action in the videos after the jump.

Mercedes-Benz Hexawheel concept by Siyamak Rouhi Dehkordi – Click above for high-res image gallery

Looking at luxury sedans like the S-Class and drop-tops like SLK, it’d be all to easy to forget that Mercedes-Benz has a rich background in off-roaders. But the Three-Pointed Star is also the maker of such rockcrawlers as the legendary Geländewagen and the Unimog. And that’s the expertise that Iranian designer Siyamak Rouhi Dehkordi has tapped into with his Hexawheel concept.

Drawing inspiration from the articulated frames of insects, the Hexawheel employs six driven wheels on an articulated chassis with a flexible drivetrain. Measuring nearly 16 feet long with a foot and a half of ground clearance, the go-anywhere Hexawheel is designed to climb over tall vertical surfaces. The Persian mechanical engineer was also responsible for the F1-inspired Ferrari Zobin concept we featured earlier, and you can check out his latest vision in the high-resolution image gallery below.

  • Dennis Blair resigns as director of U.S. National Intelligence

Dennis Blair resigns as director of U.S. National Intelligence

The Director of U.S. National Intelligence, Dennis Blair, announced his resignation at a time when its work has been put into question after the failed attacks of Detroit and New York. President Barack Obama has accepted the resignation of Dennis Blair.

“During his time as DNI, our intelligence community has performed admirably and effectively at a time of great challenges to our security, and I have valued his sense of purpose and patriotism,” Obama said in a statement.

“I have had no greater honor or pleasure than to lead the remarkably talented and patriotic men and women of the Intelligence Community,” Blair said in the statement.

As Director of Intelligence, Blair was responsible for the coordination of 16 government agencies involved in gathering intelligence and fighting terrorism.

His resignation comes after a highly critical Senate report  which says that he attributed largely to failures in the Counterterrorism Center’s Directorate of Intelligence the responsibility to avoid the failed attack on Christmas Day last year against an airplane that covered the route between Amsterdam and Detroit.

Then, the Nigerian student tried to blow Faruk Abdulmutallab explosive hidden in his underwear. Abdulmutallab retained his visa to travel to U.S. even after his father, a prominent banker in Nigeria, had informed U.S. diplomats and agents of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Abuja concerned about the extremist ideas of the young. Abdulmutallab name joined a list of about 560,000 people suspected of terrorist activities, but information on the young did not reach the level to which the U.S. State Department cancel his visa.

Following publication of the report of the Senate, Blair issued a statement acknowledging that “institutional and technological barriers remain that prevent the smooth exchange of information” between the various agencies.

  • Greg LeMond’s Side on Landis vs Armstrong

The three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond had already doubts on the credibility of Lance Armstrong’s seven Tour de France victories even before Floyd Landis revealed any doping accusations. After reading Landis’ doping allegations agains Lance Armstrong and his other fellow riders on the US Postal Service cycling team, LeMond came to Landis’ defense.

LeMond said in a statement he sent to the Daily News, “I believe most of Floyd Landis’ statements regarding the systemic corruption in professional cycling. It is clear to me Floyd has paid a heavy price and I support Floyd in his attempt to free himself from his past. I hope that others – fans, riders and sponsors embrace this as an opportunity to bring about positive change in the sport.” His statement supporting Landis was suprising since LeMond was one of those who testified against Landis in a 2007 arbitration case which caused Landis to overturn a two-year competition ban following abnormal testosterone scores in 2006. LeMond and Armstrong have also had disputes for years, particularly with suspicions for Armstrong to be doping. LeMond also made a breach-of-contract lawsuit against one of Armstrong’s primary sponsors, Trek Bicycling Corporation.

Today, the three Americans who were former winners of Tour de FranceFloyd Landis, Lance Armstrong and Greg LeMond – are connected in a complicated way.

  • IIHS says use of low-speed vehicles, minitrucks is not safe on public roads

    IIHS low-speed vehicles crash test

More and more states are allowing low-speed vehicles (LSVs) or minitrucks on public roads, but crash tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety show that these vehicles mixed with regular traffic can be a very deadly combination.

“By allowing LSVs and minitrucks on more and more kinds of roads, states are carving out exceptions to 40 years of auto safety regulations that save lives,” says David Zuby, the Institute’s chief research officer. “It’s a troubling trend that flies in the face of the work insurers, automakers, and the federal government have done to reduce crash risk. On one hand you have NHTSA saying these vehicles were meant for low-risk, controlled environments or farm use, and on the other hand states are pushing them out onto the highways.”

LSVs are used for tooling around residential neighborhoods, while minitrucks are for hauling cargo off-road. While these small vehicles provide a way to cut fuel use, they don’t meet the basic safety standards that cars and pickups do, the IIHS said. The department said that these vehicles aren’t designed to protect their occupants in crashes.

The Energy Department estimates there are 45,000 LSVs on US roads. New LSVs qualify for up to a $2,500 tax credit under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Many states also offer tax incentives on top of that.

    • Best Practices for Managing Datacenter Costs via Application and Server Consolidation

Server sprawl, software licensing fees, and facilities costs are sending datacenter operational expenses through the roof at a time when every penny is being scrutinized. As a result, low utilization rates and wasted power/cooling resources are no longer acceptable, and smart companies are looking to consolidation and virtualization to trim expenses and increase operating efficiency.

    • Why Solid-State Drives Usage Scenarios Are Expanding for the Datacenter

To accomplish the objectives of making more-efficient use of IT resources, lowering power consumption, and reducing operating expenses, many companies are turning to server consolidation and virtualization efforts—endeavors that increase server CPU utilization and reduce the number of discrete servers in a datacenter.

    • The New Economics of Midsize Enterprise Computing: Oracle’s Sun Systems Based on the Intel® Xeon® Processor 5500 Series

Midsize companies often face the same competitive pressures as large-scale enterprises. However, they may not possess the resources and staff to invest heavily in complex computing systems. Yet it’s critical for IT organizations within these companies to ensure that they have the strongest, most expandable systems in place, so that their companies have the requisite flexibility to adapt quickly to changing market conditions, roll out new products and services in shorter cycles, and become more effective competitors.

    • New Blades and Networking Solutions Ensure Solid Return on Investment

Traditionally, when companies need more computing power to deal with expanding amounts of data, they increase the number of servers, the number of compute cores per server, and the memory capacity of each server. Today’s high-powered blade servers save space and help enable significant gains in computing performance, especially when workloads are consolidated efficiently and datacenter resources are utilized most effectively. To accommodate this increase in capacity, however, the network infrastructure carrying the data must also be upgraded.

    • Reassessing Server Costs for Midsize Companies

Most companies keep their servers for three to five years—a time frame that seems reasonable given current economic conditions. Despite the savings this would seem to imply, however, extending server life in the datacenter in this way may not be the best strategy, even in the toughest economic times.

  • German Court Effectively Opens The Floodgates By Saying Software Patents Are Legal

You may remember that, about six years ago, there was a push in Europe to have the EU Parliament legalize software patents. After a huge uproar among folks who understand just how damaging towards innovation software patents can be, the EU Parliament voted against the idea by a huge margin. Except… software patents are still finding their way into Europe. Last year, we wrote about how the UK was now recognizing software patents by saying that it’s not a pure software patent if it makes a “technical contribution,” whatever that means.

Perhaps even more alarming is the news, found via Glyn Moody that a German court has effectively allowed a wide range of software patents. Previously, you could have very limited software patents only if they involved using “controllable forces of nature” to create a desired effect. Software usually did not qualify:

By contrast, the new ruling of that court on the document generation program now sets the bar extremely low. It now basically says that a computer is a technical device per se and software that “takes into account” the characteristics of that computer is patentable. To give some examples, if you make sure you don’t allocate infinite amounts of memory (since every computer has limits in that respect), that might be enough. Or you ensure that you don’t use too much bandwidth over a network.

So, as we sit and wait in the US for a ruling on Bilski, hoping (but doubting) that it will greatly curtail software patents, Germany is going in the opposite direction.

Google TV, the fusion of Internet and television

The Californian company announced today the launch of its own TV platform designed to revolutionize the way in which users are associated, on the second day of its annual developer meeting the Google I/O conference, where Google also released the latest version of the Android operating system for ’smartphones’, Android 2.2.

Google TV was presented at the conference for developers in San Francisco and promises to “end the option to choose between television and the web.”

Google TV is a new platform that will change the future of television,” said a Google official, Rishi Chandra.

Through this new tool, users can search videos and view online TV channels, while surfing the Web via a keyboard connected to their monitor.

Google TV, based in Android 2.1, will feature a powerful Intel will have WiFi connectivity, connect to your TV via the HDMI interface for high definition and can be controlled remotely with any smartphone with Android.

The American company has enjoyed the cooperation of Sony and Logitech for this release that fuses TV with the new technologies.

This technology would be accessible through internet-connected televisions, either directly or via a decoder.

Google TV will be released in the coming months. In the world there are more than 1,000 million viewers, a good figure for the internet giant.

The second big announcement of the Google I/O 2010 conference has been the release of Android 2.2, the new software revision for smartphones. The company focuses on more than twenty specific applications, including of which is the synchronization with Microsoft Exchange to view emails from Outlook.

  • The Future of Google TV is..

Google TV is going to be very interesting. It is far  from a certainty that it will be more than Apple TV in terms of consumer sales.   From a first glance the Marketplace is the most important and interesting element of the announcement.  As a development platform, Android creates the potential for untold  unique and interesting applications that could capture users imagination.  Early on, I don’t think TV oriented apps will have the most impact. If  I understood the announcement, in the beginning of 2011, there will be an Android Marketplace. The money and the opportunity won’t be in TV apps. It will be in gaming and social apps. The low hanging fruit will be in taking apps that work on facebook and Iphone/Pad and moving them (if they haven’t already) to the Android platform and upsizing them to take advantage of working on a big screen.

The Google TV box could be a very cool and hopefully inexpensive gaming console. That is where the money will be.

    What about TV ?

The success of Google TV will come down to one thing….PageRank.  Can you imagine the white hat and black hat SEO battles that will take place as video content providers try to get to the top of the TV Search Listings on Google TV ?  Like Google said, there are 4 billion TVs and growing and the US TV Ad market is $70 BILLION. There is a lot at stake if Google TV takes off. How Google does its PageRank for this product  will have a bigger impact on the success of the product in the TV market than anything else it does.

If you search for “House” on your Google TV and it returns a Youtube Video of some kid doing a parody of the Fox tv show House, you can bet the shit is going to hit the fan. Not that Fox or any big media company will sue Google. I don’t think they will. What will happen is that they will “turn off” the Google TV Chrome Browser, just as they did to Boxee.  They will fight and possibly sue over what meta data is used to determine search results. It will be a mess.  That would kill the product because if it doesn’t work with the TV shows you want to watch, why buy it ?

On the flipside if the best Google offers users is what they showed in today’s demo,  returning 5 or fewer results from a search with content from the cable/sat provider showing first and possibly consuming all 5 results, every internet content creator is going to scream loud and long at Google for putting them at a disadvantage.  No one is going to be able to find your video if you show traditional TV shows first and  dont show more than 5 results. They aren’t going to be satisfied with referrals or Google Suggestions as their only access to Google TV users. They are going to claim that this is all  just a ruse to get them to advertise and that Google sold out to big media.

Even if Google lets the user decide how to rank results, it creates too much risk for TV content providers and their distributors. More mess.

On the other other side, if traditional TV makes it to the top, Google TV is the best thing to ever happen to Cable , Satellite and Telco TV providers. Why ? Google just solved their biggest problems, their user interface and programming guide. Not only that, if Google TV is what big content providers and distributors consider to be a good partner, they just off loaded much of the future R&D for the set top box to Google and its partners and developers. Should cable and companies adopt Android on their set top boxes ? They will watch and decide. Even better for the TV Providers, maximum utility from the  Google TV comes from having a TV subscription. They may actually gain subscribers as a result of this product. Which is exactly why Charlie Ergen had Dish Network participate. Its win win win for Dish Network

Google TV isn’t the answer. It’s the question.  I’m sure Apple, Microsoft and even Facebook have an opinion on the announcement. Their response will be even more interesting.

The Future of TV is….. TV. But Google sure sped up the timeline today.
