  • Pushing Cyberwar Moral Panic Apparently Quite Profitable For Booz Allen

A few months ago, people began questioning the difference between reality and rhetoric when it came to the “threat” of “cyberwar.” Many of the claims were clearly exaggerated with people purposely confusing script kiddies doing basic vandalism with some sort of organized “war” or threat. One of the folks, who has been given the most attention for playing up this threat, is former director of national intelligence, Michael McConnell, who just happens to have scored a job as a top exec at Booz Allen. So it seems worth noting that Booz Allen has racked up over $400 million in gov’t contracts in just the past few weeks. Of course, most of the press that McConnell has been able to get about this issue plays up his former gov’t role, but plays down the fact that his new job seems to be scaring the gov’t into shoveling truckloads of cash to Booz Allen, no matter how serious the “threat” really is.

  • Pistachios Good For The Heart

Pistachios offer health benefits such as lower levels of triglycerides, and controlled blood sugar. It has both weight management and antioxidant properties. All of these contribute in having a healthy heart. And health conscious people are likely to benefit more from eating nuts than plain sweets.

And new finding adds that nuts reduce bad cholestrol (LDL) and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Joan Sabate of Loma Linda University School of Public Health penned the report which was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

It included a comprehensive study of several researches from seven countries with 600 topics, 25 clinical tests, and 583 men and women participants aged 19 to 86 years old. It was found out that eating 67 grams of nuts a day reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) by 5 to 7 percent and triglycerides by 10.2 percent.

So give your heart a treat and grab a handful of nuts like pistachios – a healthy snack without the guilt.

  • Leading Global Warming Skeptic Lindzen: Time to Abandon the ‘Skeptic’ Label

    Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

If you listened to Barack Obama back during the 2008 presidential campaign, you may recall him explaining that words matter. According to leading climate scientist and M.I.T. professor Richard Lindzen, there is a good bit of wisdom in that, as it pertains to the debate about global warming.

Lindzen, speaking at the Heartland Institute’s International Conference on Climate Change on May 17 in Chicago, explained that by assuming the “skeptic” label, the anti-global warming alarmist movement implies the theory is plausible. And according to the M.I.T. professor, it isn’t.

“One suggestion I’d make is we stop accepting the term ‘skeptic,’” Lindzen said. “As far as I can tell, skepticism involves doubts about a plausible proposition. I think current global warming alarm does not represent a plausible proposition.”

Leading Global Warming Skeptic Lindzen: Time to Abandon the Skeptic Label 260310banner2

Lindzen told the audience the alarmists have simply failed to prove their case.

“For 20 years –more than 20 years unfortunately, 22 by now, since ’88 – of repetition, escalation of claims does not make it more plausible. “Quite the contrary,” he continued. “I would suggest the failure to prove the case of 20 years makes the case even less plausible, as does the evidence of ClimateGate and other instances.”

And Lindzen ruled out the possibility the imminent destruction as a result of any potential climate catastrophe.

“In the meantime, while I avoid making forecasts for tenths of a degree change in global average temperature model, I’m quite willing to state that unprecedented climate catastrophes are not on the horizon, though in several thousand years, we may return to an ice age.”

  • Only morons, cheats and liars still believe in Man-Made Global Warming

    James Delingpole
    London Telegraph
    Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Well of course I would write a headline like that having just spent the last three days in Chicago at the Heartland Institute’s 4th International Conference on Climate Change. This is the event the cackling, cloak-wearing, befanged AGW-denying community attends every year to glorify in their own evil. And naturally, in the wake of Climategate, a mood of uproarious triumphalism has prevailed as distinguished skeptical scientists, economists, and policymakers from around the world – Pat Michaels, Richard Lindzen, Ian Plimer, Bob Carter, Fred Singer.. you name them, they’re here – have gathered to dance on the smouldering ashes of the mythical beast ManBearPig.

Except we shouldn’t use that word “sceptic” any more. Richard Lindzen – Godfather of Climate Realism – told us so in one of the keynote addresses.

“Scepticism implies doubts about a plausible proposition,” he said. “Current global warming alarmism hardly represents a plausible proposition.” Not least, he pointed out, because the various activist scientists, greenies and government institutions pushing AGW theory have failed to “improve their case over 20 years.” So paper thin are the AGW movement’s arguments that pretty much the only defences left to them are desperate techniques like the appeal to authority (“the Royal Society believes in AGW and the Royal Society is, like, really old and distinguished, so AGW must be true”) and cheap slurs.

Consider, as examples of the latter technique, how this conference has been reported in the liberal media. Both the BBC and the Huffington Post have decided to write off the expertise of the dozens of PhDs and professors speaking at this event to concentrate on the issue that really matters: it was funded by Big Oil. (Except it isn’t. Unfortunately Big Oil stopped funding the skeptical side of the argument a long time ago. The Heartland Institute is a conservative leaning think tank funded by a number of business donors, and the main funder of the conference is a local libertarian millionaire who just happens to want a bit of openness and honesty in the debate on AGW. But hey, never let the facts get in the way of a libtard story).

  • Caffeine: A Brain Booster

Several studies indicated caffeine’s potential in “Therapeutic Opportunities for Caffeine in Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Neurodegenerative Diseases.” It is a collection of researches that tackled the benefits of caffeine in multiple perspectives.

Caffeine, in a series of epidemiological studies, is instrumental in preventing motor dysfunction similar to Parkinson’s disease. In addition, moderate consumption of caffeine reverses the effect of cognitive decline because of age and also Alzheimer’s Disease by preventing memory loss and neurodegeneration. It targets a particular adenosine A2A receptor to do this. It normalize brain functioning and reduce amyloid beta production.

The said research collection is a compilation of original researches from international experts and funded by Associação Industrial e Comercial do Café with editors from the University of Lisbon and University of Coimbra, in Portugal. Coffee has been known for its anti-oxidant properties but it is only recently that caffeine is being appreciated for its remarkable effects on the brain.

  • Lady Luck On Wizards For Winning NBA Lottery

Season 2009-2010 has hit Washington Wizards with one blow after another so franchise representative Irene Pollin must have heard angels singing when No. 1 draft choice is drawn out for Wizards.

Losing is not something new for any team but Wizards left last season in 26-56 with some spiky highlights.

Their key player Gilbert Arenas is placed under suspension for breaking NBA’s zero tolerance policy on firearms. That’s for using his locker in the Verizon Center as the safe for his guns.

Abe Pollin, head owner of Wizards who also made the move to drop the controversial name Washington Bullets, passed away in November 2009. It certainly is a tough moment of letting go but it seems not to be the end of the rough season as they needed to also trade Jamison and Butler for trimming down salary expenses.

Pollin family’s legacy with Washington Wizards will be handed over to new owner Ted Leonsis and the deal will probably get the seal by June. With the upper hand in enjoining either John Wall or Evan Turner, lottery may not be the only thing where this team can win. But then luck is not a reliable force that 2011 NBA championship would need.

  • France Rejects Germany’s Naked Short-Selling Ban, Finance Minister Lagarde Slams Unilateral Move

    christine lagarde

The fallout from the German naked short-selling ban is having fascinating ripple effects already, beyond just the market.

According to CNBC, France’s finance minister Christine Lagarde has come out in rejection of the move, saying the country will not consider similar regulations, and that she “regrets” Germany’s unilateral move on this front.

Suddenly you have one of Europe’s two most important players actively denouncing the other one’s dumb behavior.

Right now, all of Europe could probably find a reason to be angry at Germany. It was their intransigence that caused the Greek crisis to go on so long, and it’s Germany that’s making waves at a time when the market could use calm.

More proof that German leaders have taken political incompetence to an art form.

  • The Irony Of The Euro Crisis: This Is What The World Would Be Like Under The Gold Standard

I’ve spent a great deal of time in the last few months describing why the Greek crisis was much larger, more complex and a greater risk than anyone assumed. As stocks continued to chug higher (and I built short positions) an odd occurrence was brewing. Gold prices were rallying in tandem with the dollar. As the market began to crater and eventually crash 1,000 points in one day the gold market actually continued to rally along with the dollar! For anyone familiar with gold and forex markets this was more than odd. But there is a reasonable explanation for the move. And half of that move is entirely unjustified and incorrect in my opinion.

What if I told you that the Euro’s inevitable demise was not a condemnation of fiat money? You’d probably call me crazy. Well, that’s basically what several emailers have done in recent days. I received this friendly note from a reader recently:

“nice work predicting the risk in Greece and the Euro over the last few months, but you’re dead wrong about paper money and the gold standard. The Euro is proving that paper money does not work and gold’s recent price increases prove that the move towards a gold standard is on the horizon”

The irony behind the Euro crisis is that it is not at all a condemnation of fiat money. In fact, it is a condemnation on single currency systems such as the gold standard. I have long argued that the mess the EMU created in 1999 with the inception of the Euro was unlikely to survive a serious global recession. This was due to one primary argument. The gold standard and single currency systems have all ended in demise for similar reasons. This was due to their inherent inflexibility and inherent weaknesses imposed on particular trade partners within the currency system. As I’ve previously noted in “Reflections on gold as an asset class“:

“the gold standard had a tendency to cause severe strains on countries due to trade imbalances and the inability to provide flexibility to countries with trade deficits.”

The move off the gold standard and convertible currency systems has generally been due to the inherent restraints imposed by such systems. For instance, trade deficit nations are at an inherent weakness when attempting to respond to recession because the trade imbalance results in rising unemployment and falling output and prices – an inherently deflationary environment. With your own currency this imbalance would naturally offset over time, but under a single currency system there is no opportunity for the floating exchange system to reach balance. This is just one very simple example of the types of inherent restrictions a single currency system imposes on a nation, but it’s particularly pertinent as we see this exact event unfolding in Greece – where the single currency system is destroying the country and handcuffing the government from properly defending their economy and thus providing for their citizens. Instead, they are risking default (a risk which does not exist within a sovereign issuing floating exchange system) and forcing their citizens into recession all so the surplus nation of Germany can enjoy price stability and continued high exports.

The inefficient market irony within all of this is that the markets are viewing the Euro crisis as a condemnation and failure of fiat money. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. What we are seeing in Europe is in many ways what we would see if the world were living in a gold standard world or a convertible currency world. The same unnecessary restrictions would occur and deficit nations would be at risk of recession which would ultimately result in regional and perhaps global recession. The recent rise in gold prices is not based on the true fundamentals of mined gold, but rather on the hope that the Euro’s failure will increase demand for gold via its potential return as a true currency. As we’ve described above, that is entirely misguided thinking and perhaps the greatest real-time example of the inefficient market I have ever witnessed.

Of course, this doesn’t imply that gold prices are set to collapse. In fact, we are likely to see gold prices continue their record move so long as the weakness in the Euro continues. If the Euro collapses misguided governments will clamor for gold as they incorrectly worry over the stability of their own paper currencies. After all, the ignorance with regards to our monetary system extends up to the very highest levels of government and the total lack of understanding is on display in Europe every day as politicians make mistake after mistake and further destroy their economy. The politicians and central bankers have mishandled this crisis at almost every single step and this lack of understanding with regards to the monetary system is the single largest contributing factor. What does this all prove? The inefficient market is alive and well.

  • Germans Now Want All Of Europe To Adopt Short-Selling Rules — Speculators Respond By Hammering DAX

    german stockbroker

After hastily announcing new regulations to go after short-sellers yesterday, German leaders have quickly realized the folly of country-specific regulations within the EU. Nothing’s to stop traders from going after these various instruments in other countries.

So now they’re on a campaign to get the rest of Europe on board. According to Bloomberg, Deputy Finance Minister Hans Michelbach is pushing the UK to join in, and then, hopefully the rest of the EU. Somehow we’d be surprised if the UK succumbed to this nonsense, given its desire to keep its place as a pre-eminent financial city. But stupider things have been done.

Meanwhile, investors have responded by hammering the German stocks. The DAX is off 2.7%.

  • How to hotwire a car

Here are some delicious steps on how to hotwire a car. Learn this skill and use it to hotwire a car responsibly and legally. Hot-wiring a car is not an easy job and unlike changing a fuel filter in any cars. It is a dangerous task and likely to damage the car if you did not handle the job well. Therefore make sure you read step by step carefully and do not try this to someone else’s car. ONLY do it when necessary or else you may stand a chance to get a new car.

    How to hotwire a car

    how to hotwire a car
Here we shared the most basic way to hotwire a car with simple 5 steps. This method will work on most of the cars. It may not work on cars with high security that hides the required component to hotwire.

Step 1 Prepare what you need to hotwire a car

    You will need to prepare:

The proof of ownership if you are going to hotwire a car in public places like public car park.

Flat-head screwdriver, Slotted screwdriver, and Phillips-head screwdriver.

    Wire cutters and rubber tape.

Insulated gloves to protect yourself and a small-size hammer.

Your car owner’s manual for reference.

Forget about the proof of ownership if you are about to hot-wire your own car in your own garage. You can try pound the slotted screwdriver into your car ignition and turn the engine on like a car. It will work surprisingly for many cars manufactured before late 80’s but this method will spoil the ignition cylinder.

Step 2 Remove the ignition cover

The ignition cover usually has several screws on top and bottom of the steering column. Remove these screws and also remove the plastic cover gentle and soft. If you are a forgetful person, take some pictures or video of how it looks like before you remove any components.

Step 3 Get the right wire to hotwire

Pull out the ignition cylinder slowly and identify the wires. General cars will at least have five wires behind the ignition cylinder. Usually there are 2 red color wires for the car power, another one or two brown color which connect to the starter, and another green color wire to the earth. Now you will need to refer to your car owner’s manual to see which color is exactly for certain function.

Step 4 Connect the power wires

Wear the insulated gloves, cut both power wires (usually in red), stripes the ends and then connect the wires. You can connect it by twisting them together using your finger easily. It is like how to start a car with a key when you turn on the ignition before start the engine, it will provide power to everything in the car.

    Step 5 Start the car

Now is the last step on how to hotwire a car. It is the step where usually you will turn your key in the ignition to start the engine. Cut the starter wires, stripe the ends and touch both of these wires together. Pull them apart and use rubber tape to tape both ends as soon as the car is started. You will only need few second to start the car.

    Tips on hotwire a car

Here are some delicious tips for some special cars that may require a little bit more effort to start it properly.

Some cars have only one start wire. In this case, cut the wire and stripe the end and touch it to the exposed part of the connected power wires. This will help to start the car.

Some cars have some switches which will disconnect the battery. The car engine won’t start no matter how hard you try to hotwire it. Look for these switches and turn it on.

Hybrid cars and electric cars may come with different components; you may have to refer to owner’s manual to do a better job.

If you notice there is a flashing light around the ignition, it may be the immobilizer. You will have to disable it or else the car won’t start. That’s all for how to hotwire a car.

  • Overuse of Antibiotics Causes Resistance and More Problems

Antibiotic resistance poses danger to humans against some bacterial infections. Strains of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics can be caused by improper use of antibiotics. Dr Donald Poretz, an infectious disease specialist, said “You end up with very resistant bacteria in the urinary tract. That’s only one example. Skin infections, lung infections, different bacteria causing these types of infections as they become more and more resistant, and then you get to more severe problem like tuberculosis in many parts of the world. People are given little of this and little of that to treat tuberculosis and tuberculosis germs develop resistance.” Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus also known as MRSA is one of the most lethal infections born out of bacterial resistance which kills 19,000 people in the United States every year.

Dr Thomas Frieden, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said “We speak of the pre-antibiotic and antibiotic eras, but if we don’t improve our response to the public health problem of antibiotic resistance, we may enter a post- antibiotic world in which we will have few or no clinical interventions for some infections.” Specialists are concerned that the more times the antibiotics are used, the less effective they become. The resistance of bacteria to antibiotics due to its mutation is a natural process. Experts say that the best solution is to educate patients and doctors to stop using antibiotics when they are not necessary.
