  • BREAKING: Next-generation Sebring to be called Chrysler Nassau

    Chrysler Nassau Concept

According to dealers and others familiar with the company’s product plan, Chrysler’s next-generation Sebring mid-size sedan will now be called Nassau.

A Chrysler spokesman declined to comment when asked about the Nassau name, reports Free Press.

The new name is seen as a move by Chrysler to re-establish credibility in the high-volume midsize car segment after the Sebring, which was criticized for its cheap interior and poor quality.

The Nassau name was used on a Chrysler concept car that was shown at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show but the car will not look like that study, said Jim Hall, a consultant whose firm, 2953 Analytics, advises automakers on future vehicles.

“Chrysler bought the Nassau name when they came out with the concept so it makes sense they would use it,” Hall said.

  • Decreasing Levels of Sea Ice Responsible for Unusual Levels of Warming Temperatures in Arctic 2010

    MonthlyMarchiceextent1979to2010_Figure3

2010April28: Decreasing levels of sea ice are responsible for unusual increases in temperatures in the Arctic, according to a research study led by James Screen, a researcher the University of Melbourne, Australia. Arctic temperatures have risen twice as fast as the rest of the world in recent decades. According to Screen, “the emergence of these strong ice-temperature feedbacks can only increase the likelihood of further rapid warming and sea ice loss” (Guardian.co.uk, 2010).

  • Hans Pandeya Demands Apology From Us; Says He’s Now Put Pirate Bay Acquisition On Hold

After publishing our post on Hans Pandeya’s bizarre and ridiculous attempt to buy The Pirate Bay again, after his failed bid last year (while still pretending that bid succeeded), Mr. Pandeya sent us an email demanding that we issue a correction and an apology for our story. Oddly, he failed to point out a single thing we got wrong in the story, so we’re not really sure what to correct and don’t see any reason to issue an apology. He did, however, send us a link to another press release that he, himself, sent out, claiming that his own company has “put the acquisition on hold.” Uh, yeah. Perhaps that’s because there’s no acquisition to be had. It also claims that GGF is “commencing an arbitration proceeding” to gain control over The Pirate Bay’s domain name. That ought to go over well considering GGF never actually paid for The Pirate Bay and that deal collapsed, it’s difficult to see what kind of claim he thinks he has on the domain now. We eagerly await future emails where he explains. Perhaps, next time, he can include more details to back up his claims.

  • Nike NBA Post Season Twitter Playoff Treemap

    nike_twitter_basketball.jpg
The Nike Post Season Twitter Playoff [nikebasketball.com] reveals the relative popularity of NBA teams within the Twitosphere in real-time. The interface is the newest creation of Stamen Design, who have created several other real-time Twitter visualizations for several fancy clients, including MTV (Video Music Awards), the NBC (Winter Olympics) and Twitter themselves.

In the Matchup interface, the rectangles captured in the treemap-like interface represent a different NBA team each, and dynamically scale according to the number of tweets per minute for that particular team. The Bracket interface orders all the teams in a visual ranking that mimics a play-off style competition. The teams with the most tweets can win “matchups” while miving to subsequent rounds.

  • Rally legend Per Eklund to enter Nürburgring 24 in classic Saab 900 Turbo

Hold on to your Dubbelmossas, rally fans. Legendary Swedish rally and rallycross driver Per “Pekka” Eklund is coming back, and he’s coming back hard. How hard? A Saab 900 Turbo 16S built to Group A specs.. Sure, it’s not diamond tough hard – like this – but we’re still impressed. Not only that, but he’ll be campaigning the 26-year old front-driver in the ADAC 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Also of note, it’s been thirty years since Eklund competed in a 24 hour race.

Fear not though, as this particular Saab 900 Turbo sounds totally up to the task as it’s capable of producing 310 hp and a punishing 384 pound-feet of torque steer. Says Eklund, “When I got offer to be able to compete with a classic Saab 900 Turbo on the Nordschleife, I immediately loved the idea.” Who wouldn’t?

Will the 64-year old Eklund be up to the task of racing around one of the world’s most difficult tracks in the middle of the night in car built (probably) the same night Mondale was defeated? We’ll go ahead and guess yes, he’ll be just fine. As for a Saab holding together for 24 grueling hours, hey, anything’s possible. The fun starts on May 13th.

  • Iron Man 2 premiere was star studded and Audi studded

Robert Downey Jr. arrives at Iron Man 2 Premiere in Audi R8 Spyder

The world premiere of Iron Man 2 took place on Monday in Los Angeles and all the actors in the movie showed up in style (some in an Audi A8 and the Audi R8) at the El Capitan Theatre where the Audi R8 Spyder used in the movie awaited their arrival.

“The R8 Spyder is practically custom-made for the superhero, a technological genius who needs to drive the car without his high-tech suit, but doesn’t want to miss out on innovative technology,” Audi said. “Robert Downey Jr. and his R8 Spyder put Audi’s philosophy of Vorsprung durch Technik to good use: Iron Man’s visual capabilities are optimized by the helmet, for example, and the R8’s high efficiency LED headlights likewise provide for good vision.”

“Just like the first movie, Iron Man 2 is the perfect environment for the Audi R8. Like us, the technologically ingenious Super Hero Tony Stark represents Vorsprung durch Technik. And just as the R8 Spyder was developed from the Audi R8, the Super Hero Tony Stark surprises us with new innovations,” said Lothar Korn, Head of Marketing Communications at Audi. Robert Downey Jr., alias Tony Stark, also drove the Audi R8 in the first Iron Man movie, which was released in May 2008.

  • BMW to use carbon fiber across its lineup

BMW announced last week that its Megacity Vehicle will launch in markets in 2013. The Megacity Vehicle will be a zero-emission urban vehicle and will use extensive amounts of carbon fiber to reduce weight. The German automaker also plans to use of carbon fiber across its lineup.

“We will be the first manufacturer to take carbon fiber to effectively high volume,” global sales head Ian Robertson said.

He said that carbon fiber technology shows the promise for use outside the new Megacity and could help generate better economies of scale.

BMW and SGL Group plan on building a $100 million carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Washington state to supply parts for its vehicles. The plant will produce carbon fiber and a plant in Germany will mold it into paneling for the Megacity vehicle.

  • Teaching Money with Children’s Literature

    Introduction:

The resources that are listed below are great examples of materials that can be used in a second grade classroom for a unit on money.  The topics range from counting coin values,  to addition and subtraction of monetary values, and comparing monetary values. Included below are books that can be used in the classroom, places to find printable materials, and other sites where students can practice their money skills.

    Text Annotations:

    1. Let’s Find Out About Money by Kathy Barabas, illustrations by David Swann

    1326211.gif

This book about money and the U.S. Mint captivates children’s curiosity about where money comes from.  It shows the reader the process of making money and the texts and photographers are extremely realistic.

    2. Matthew and the Midnight Money Van by Allen Morgan, illustrations by Michael Martchenko

     20620519.JPG

This story is about a boy named Matthew who is looking for Mother’s Day gift for his mom when one night the Midnight Money Van shows up in a rainstorm of pennies.  The man who drives the van offers to give Matthew some of the money if he helps clean up the mess.  Matthew agrees and he ends up on an adventure looking for gifts to buy for his mom at the Midnight Mall.

    3. If You Made a Million by David Schwartz, illustrated by Steven Kellogg

     books.jpg

This story is a follow up to the book How Much is a Million, and explores the idea of accomplishing odd jobs and tasks in order to earn payment.  The more in depth topics such as spending and saving and the history of money itself are contrasted with the silly illustrations by Kellogg. However, the real question being answered is how much does one million dollars look like and what would it be spent on.

    4. A Chair for my Mother by Vera Williams

     books1.jpg

A young girl explains how in her home is a big glass jar where her mother places all the coins that she receives in tips and her grandmother places all of her savings from a day at the market.  The money in this jar is going to be spent on a beautiful armchair because the rest of their furniture burned up in a fire.  When the jar is full, the family rolls the coins in wrappers and exchanges them for bills before heading out on their shopping trip.

    5. My Rows and Piles of Coins by Tololwa Mollel, illustrated by E.B. Lewis

    039575186101_sx140_sy225_sclzzzzzzz_.jpg

Saruni is a little boy who wants to buy a bicycle to help his mother carry food back and forth from the marketplace.  He works for his mother in the marketplace and saves his money for a long time.  This book touches on the savings of money and goal- setting.  Young children will be able to identify with the main character and his wish to own something of such high value, like a bicycle.

    Web Annotations:

    1. Piggy Bank

    http://www.funbrain.com/cgi-bin/cr.cgi

This game gives the students the sale price and the amount of money paid for the imaginary item.  The students then must fill in how many dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies the person would receive back in change.  At the beginning of the game the student can choose the difficulty level and the country’s currency that they would be using.
    2. Create- A- Coin

    http://www.usmint.gov/kids/games/makingChange/

This game allows students to create their own coin.  He or she can design what letter they want the coin to have on it, what picture is in the middle of the coin, the shape of the coin, and the lettering inside the coin.  The student only has to click and drag the tools for making the coin onto the workspace.
    3. Coin Quiz

    http://www.eduplace.com/kids/mw/practice/quiz.html?qzid=hmm05_ep/gr2/1406&qseq=5,6,4,0,8,9,10,1,11,12&at=0&fb=tr&score=40&curq=4&UNIT=6

This website gives students two different examples of coins and the student has to choose which amount of coins matches the amount given to the student in number form.  The pictures on the site are of real coins and are colored either silver or bronze.  If the student answers the question correctly another question pops up but if they answer wrong they have the opportunity to do the problem again.
    4. Matching Number Value to Word Value

    http://www.quia.com/mc/4918.html

This interactive website displays 16 boxes, half with a written number value such as $.31 and half with the written word value such as thirty- one cents.  The directions ask the student to match the number value with the correct word value.  When the student makes a correct match the two boxes are filled with another color to show that they have already been used.  If the student does not make a correct match nothing happens at all.  There are options on the side of the board that allow the student to change the size of the font in the boxes, to show the answers, and to restart the game.

    5. Falling Money

    http://fen.com/studentactivities/Piggybank/piggybank.html

This is a colorful game that has students click on amounts of money as they fall from the top of the screen.  The student is given a total amount of money and when the money figures fall, the students have to click on the numbers in order to add them up inside the piggy bank.  When the student gathers enough money to match the amount given a new amount appears and the piggy bank on the side has a green line at the bottom indicating that the money is increasing in the bank.
    Additional Resources:

    1. Money Review Power Point

    http://www.allentownsd.org/EETT/secondgrade.htm#Money

This is a downloadable power point that gives teachers a handful of review questions including amounts of money in picture form that the students must choose what number value it is, addition and subtraction of money amounts, and word problems containing amounts of money.

  • Anti-Piracy Group Says: ‘Child Porn Is Great’ Since It Gets Politicians To Block File Sharing Sites

For many years, we’ve seen the entertainment industry make totally bogus and unsubstantiated claims about file sharing sites being hotbeds of child pornography in an effort to get them to regulate or shut down those services. Of course, the actual evidence shows that file sharing porn is no worse than what’s on the wider internet. But that doesn’t stop the entertainment industry from making such bogus claims — and it seems like they’re gleefully admitting it these days. Jamie Love points us to an account of an event in Sweden, entitled “Sweden — A Safe Haven for Pirates?” put on by the US Chamber of Commerce, where someone from the Danish “Anti-Piracy” group spoke out about how great child pornography is, because it makes it easy for them to get politicians to block or shut down file sharing sites.

“Child pornography is great,” the speaker at the podium [Johan Schluter] declared enthusiastically. “It is great because politicians understand child pornography. By playing that card, we can get them to act, and start blocking sites. And once they have done that, we can get them to start blocking file sharing sites”.

Of course, this is no surprise, but having him say so directly is a bit surprising. He goes on to admit that the entertainment industry is planning to use child porn as a wedge to demand “a giant filter” for copyright:

“One day we will have a giant filter that we develop in close cooperation with IFPI and MPA. We continuously monitor the child porn on the net, to show the politicians that filtering works. Child porn is an issue they understand.”

Of course, those filters don’t actually work, and using them to force entire sites to be blocked, despite them having a relatively tiny proportion of such content isn’t just dishonest and underhanded, but dangerous. We’re all in favor of trying to stop child porn, but you do that by focusing on the source, not by putting up filters willy-nilly in a misguided attempt to get politicians to also protect your business model.

Either way, it’s incredibly disgusting to have anyone claim that child porn is “great,” just because it can be improperly exploited for the sake of protecting another industry’s business model. That he’s basically admitting that he doesn’t remotely care about stopping child pornography, but prefers to use it to his advantage is downright sickening.

  • TVR to come back with new Corvette-engined roadster

    TVR Tuscan S

The Russian owner of TVR, Nikolai Smolenski, has revealed plans to revive the brand with a new Corvette-engined model to be manufactured in Germany. The new model is likely to be built by Gullwing, which currently produces the AC MkVI.

Smolenski bought TVR from its long-time owner, the late Peter Wheeler, in 2004 but was unable to keep production going and the company fell-apart in 2006.

Speaking to AutoCar Smolenski said that he is working on a new model that will have a modified version of the traditional steel backbone chassis and independent suspension used on original TVR models.

“We looked at every engine available — including making our own — and decided that the Corvette was the most powerful off-the-shelf design going,” he said. “Fitting it to our chassis allows us to meet all current regulations and is not too big a step.”

Smolenski said that the first new-generation TVR models will be convertibles. TVR also has plans to build a hybrid concept.

  • Survey Says: BMW replaces Toyota as most valuable global automotive brand

According to Millward Brown’s annual BrandZ Top 100 survey, BMW has overtaken Toyota as the world’s most valuable automotive brand. Peter Walshe, Millward Brown global brand director, said he thinks Toyota will bounce back after the automaker’s massive recall campaign kicked off toward the end of 2009.

BMW brand’s brand value declined 9 percent compared with the 2009 ranking to just over $21.8 billion while Toyota’s dropped 27 percent to just under $21.8 billion.

“It is likely that Toyota’s brand has suffered further in recent months, but it is a strong brand and is trying hard to overcome the damage through a major communications campaign,” Walshe said. “All of our evidence shows that strong brands are much more likely to recover from a crisis.”

FoMoCo and Volkswagen AG also improved their brand value.

  • Natural, Man-Made and Imagined Disasters by Nils-Axel Mörner

    Article Tags: Nils-Axel Mörner

An event that gives catastrophic effects on human lives and living conditions is usually termed a disaster. A disaster or catastrophe usually takes us with surprise, by that increasing the negative effects. The boxing-day tsunami is a terrible example of a disaster taking us with total surprise and giving rise to catastrophic effects all around the Indian Ocean. This was a disaster generated by totally natural forces, and we couldn’t have done anything about it as such. What our human societies had missed, however, was the establishment of an
    effective warning system.

We have to learn to live with natural disasters; earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, avalanches, tsunamis, cyclones, floods, draughts, blizzards, wildfires, etc. They are all parts of terrestrial system and we cannot change them, but we can prepare for them in terms of warning systems, evacuation plans, aid organization, etc. We may also avoid habitation at spots that cannot be protected.

This seems less feasible, however, as humans, through history, have shown to chose even the most dangerous places for their living (like slopes of active volcanoes, fault zones, foots and slopes of active slides, tops of active coastal cliff erosion, repeatedly flooded areas, etc.). Sometimes we are able to make precautional work like coastal protection, dikes against flooding, bypasses for possible mudflows and other efforts to try to diminish the effects of a potential catastrophe. We also have to make careful risk assessments. This implies temporal and spatial cover of past events.

  • Microsoft Suggests Android Violates Its Patents… But Gets HTC To Buy A License

Ah, the patent games Microsoft plays. For years, it’s spread FUD, claiming that open source operating systems, such as Linux, violate its patents — though it has never detailed what patents or really sued anyone directly over those patents (though some have argued that it has done so with a couple patents tangentially). Now it appears that Microsoft is also claiming that Google’s Android violates its patents. Of course, it’s not doing so by going after Google. Instead, it’s part of what came out in an announcement concerning Microsoft licensing certain patents to HTC specifically to allow HTC to run Android.

Seems a bit strange, right? Why should Microsoft have any say in whether or not HTC can put Google’s Android operating system on its phones. The whole thing seems even odder when you realize that HTC was, for a long time, one of the major makers of smartphones running Windows Mobile operating system. But, the complicating factor here might be Apple. Apple, of course, famously went on the patent offensive and sued HTC over its Android phones a couple months ago. So now, with Microsoft doing this deal, it seems to very publicly be entering the patent fight between Apple and Google, which for bizarre reasons is playing out with HTC as the pawn getting bounced around between them all.

Of course, Microsoft’s press announcement on this particular deal is hilarious in how disingenuous it is:

The licensing agreement with HTC underscores the important role IP plays in ensuring a healthy and vibrant IT ecosystem.

Uh, no. It underscores the exact opposite. It underscores just how totally screwed up the smartphone market is because of the absolutely ridiculous patent thicket that’s been built up around pretty much everything that goes into a smartphone. This deal doesn’t show “the important role IP plays.” It shows how a big company that has nothing whatsoever to do with a particular fight can suddenly throw its weight around on the topic in an attempt to cause confusion in the marketplace and potentially scare off competitors. It’s the exact opposite of what the patent system is supposed to do.

Crime fighting Good Samaritans can take on all forms, and apparently that includes in the form of a 3,900 pound, rear-drive Cadillac CTS. FailBlog has stumbled upon a what looks to be a Chinese news program running street camera footage of a petty thief stealing the purse of an unsuspecting woman. But instead of running off into the night, the robber is instead intercepted by the Caddy driver in rather spectacular fashion.

It’s almost a good enough display to have us wondering about the authenticity of what’s going on (there are a lot of staged viral videos these days), but assuming it’s the real deal, now might be a good time to change Cadillac’s tagline to “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Bad Guys.”

Miller Dealership Group, Whelen Engineering, BFGoodrich Tires, Ford Racing and the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Series to sponsor the 2010 Hurst Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Pace Car,” said Jim Osborn MD, Chairman of the Austin Hatcher Foundation. “The Foundation’s focus is on empowering families faced with pediatric cancer to thrive, and we hope to bring excitement to these families through Hurst’s history of unique muscle cars.”

Other signature Hurst details include a traditional Hurst black on gold paint scheme, a Hurst leather interior with contrast top-stitching and embroidered logos, Hurst-logoed floor mats and a Hurst AIR-SPEED rear deck spoiler.

We’ve all pulled off stupid stunts that lead to severe punishment from our parents, but we’ve never gone this far. The Dutch Daily News reports that a 20 year-old driver has been caught by police going 100 miles per hour. That’s hardly news, except the lead-footed youth was driving his parent’s Bugatti Veyron at 50 mph over the speed limit and the Dutch police confiscated the vehicle and the driver’s license. There is no word whether the family will ever get the Veyron back.

We’re thinking this young man is likely to receive more than five minutes in time out for his 1.8 million euro “mistake,” but then again, it isn’t every parent that lets their 20 year-old son drive the family Veyron (assuming he had permission in the first place). It’s also important to note that it really doesn’t pay to drive too fast in northern Europe outside of select derestricted portions of the Autobahn. Here in the States, reckless driving can carry the same weight as a drunk driving arrest, but chances are your vehicle won’t be confiscated.
