The forms can vary enormously and have much less limitations than other touch screens; curved surfaces are possible, for example. The capacitive technology also allows to work with various overlays and supports multi-touch detection.

    Safe plant extension in the original plan

    The database-driven software system Engineering Base Instrumentation for process control technology offers a high degree of safety for power plant suppliers and operators. At the Hanover Fair, Aucotec AG now for the first time presents a special variant of its tool. It enables plant manufacturers to safely hand over the original planning data together with the finished plant for later extensions by the operator.

    Thus the Hanover-based company meets the increasing demand of the companies concerned: these want to enable integrating engineering features not only into their own system environments but most of all into those of the end users. The particular openness of the platform Engineering Base (EB) makes this flexible integration into the supply chain possible. The protection of the original data is ensured.

    The new method quasi freezes the data of a completely projected plant at the time of delivery yet enables any kind of supplementation. Operators do no longer have to work with rigid, unintelligent PDF files and can skip time-consuming coordination with the plant construction company or its subcontractors. Instead they dispose of the comfort of a complete E-CAE tool without however endangering the original data. Aucotec has developed this solution together with one of the largest control system suppliers worldwide for power plants.

    BMW Gran Coupé concept reveal – click above to watch the video

    At last week’s Beijing Motor Show, BMW unveiled its new four-door Gran Coupé concept. To be more precise, they revealed the car in the Chinese city, but not at the show itself. At the time, we scoured the BMW stand and the only new vehicle we found there was the 535Li extended-wheelbase, with no sign of the new concept.

    It turns out that BMW held a private reception the night before the media day at the show, and there the concept stayed. In a ‘better late than never’ move, one of the attendees has posted a video of the reveal, and we’re sharing that with you now. Designer Adrian van Hooydonk and Chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer opened the doors on the Gran Coupé in an extended (albeit not particularly awe inspiring) manner, but the concept still looks pretty great regardless, and it also looks very nearly production-ready. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to check out the Gran Coupé live somewhere soon, but in the meantime, check out the video after the jump.

  • Burbank California Getting Two Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses

    Retired comedian and the former King of Late Night TV, Johnny Carson used to make non-stop jokes about the city of Burbank, California. Before Jay Leno took over the Tonight Show, gave it to Conan and took it back, there was Johnny Carson cracking jokes from the studio located in “beautiful downtown Burbank.”

    But, now many years later, Burbank is cleaning up its image by enlisting the help of two hydrogen fuel cell zero emissions transit buses. The buses are made by Proterra and contain both a fuel cell and a bank of lithium titanate batteries, making them hybrid buses.

    Each fuel cell bus has a range of over 250 miles which is double the range of what the other diesel powered buses can achieve. The ultra-quiet buses were designed with light weight materials and paid for using state grants.

    So, beautiful downtown Burbank which was spoken of sarcastically decades ago by the King of Late Night TV is making its move to shed the sarcasm in favor of realism and clean air for all who travel there.

  • GM to invest $890 million in five plants to build cleaner, fuel-efficent engines

    After announcing that it has paid back its U.S. and Canadian Government loans and that it will invest $257 million at its Fairfax Kansas and Detroit Hamtramck assembly plants to build the next-generation Malibu – the General is back with some more good news.

    GM announced today that it will invest $890 million to build cleaner, more fuel-efficient engines across five plants including: Tonawanda, N.Y.; Defiance, Ohio; Bedford, Ind.; Bay City, Mich. and St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

    The investment is expected to create or retain about 1,600 jobs.

    “GM is investing in our plants, restoring and creating jobs and making progress toward our vision of designing, building and selling the world’s best vehicles,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America. “These latest investments show our commitment to improving fuel economy for buyers of every GM car, truck and crossover and giving them the best possible driving and ownership experience.”

    So how much cleaner and fuel-efficient will these new engines be? GM said that specifics about the engine capabilities as well as product applications will be shared at a later date – so we don’t know yet.

    GM To Invest $890 Million To Build Cleaner, More Fuel-Efficient Engines

    – Five plants receive work: Tonawanda, N.Y.; Defiance, Ohio; Bedford, Ind.; Bay City, Mich. and St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada
    – Investment creates or retains about 1,600 jobs
    – New engines to save more fuel through direct injection technology and advanced combustion system design

    DETROIT – General Motors will invest more than $890 million which will create or retain more than 1,600 jobs in five North American plants to produce a new generation of fuel efficient small block truck and car engines. The investment consists of the following:

    – Two plants will support the engine production:
    o Tonawanda, N.Y. – an investment of $400 million resulting in more than 710 jobs
    o St. Catharines, Ontario – an investment of $235 million resulting in approximately 400 jobs (click here for Canada release)

    – Three plants will support engine casting and component production:
    o Defiance, Ohio – an investment of $115 million resulting in up to 189 jobs
    o Bedford, Ind. – an investment of $111 million resulting in about 245 jobs
    o Bay City, Mich. – an investment of $32 million resulting in over 80 jobs

    The investments include facility renovation and installation of new, highly flexible engine machining and assembly equipment and special tooling designed for manufacturing efficiency and engine quality. At the casting facilities, investments include expansion of semi-permanent mold and precision sand casting technologies that result in a high degree of dimensional accuracy and material strength properties needed to support the newer, more efficient engines in GM’s product portfolio.

    The next generation small block engine family will have unprecedented fuel efficiency through direct injection and an all-new advanced combustion system design. The new engine family will rely exclusively on aluminum engine blocks, which are lighter and contribute to the improved fuel efficiency. In addition to being E85 ethanol capable, these engines are being designed with the capability to meet increasingly stringent criteria emissions standards expected throughout this decade.

    Specifics about the engine capabilities as well as product applications will be shared at a later date.

    Since the launch of the new GM last July, the company has announced investments of more than $2.3 billion at 22 facilities in the U.S. and Canada. These investments restored or created more than 9,100 jobs, and they demonstrate a strong commitment to GM’s future and to the United States and Canada.

  • Justice Dept. Boosts Number Of FBI Agents, Attorneys Focusing On Copyright Infringement

    As noted, yesterday was officially “World Intellectual Property Day,” and it looks like the US Justice Department decided to contribute. It announced the appointment of 15 new assistant US attorneys and 20 FBI special agents, who will focus on intellectual property issues. Funny timing on this one. We had just noted that the Justice Department had moved the very real problem of identify fraud off the priority list of things to work on — and, just weeks later, the GAO put out its report noting that the supposed “harm” done by intellectual property infringement appears to be based on nothing. So why is the Justice Department beefing up efforts to fight intellectual property issues? It couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the fact that some of the top folks at the Justice Department previously worked for the RIAA, MPAA, and the BSA — three of the groups who were most responsible for pushing out those bogus claims about the “impact” of piracy. Nah… that couldn’t possibly be related, could it?

    A Ford apresentou para a imprensa o Fiesta S1600, uma versão esportiva e limitada designada para o Reino Unido. O veiculo terá um produção limitada em apenas 650 unidades e virá com motorizações movidas a diesel e a gasolina mais potentes e com mais equipamentos de série.

    O Ford Fiesta S1600 contará com o motor a gasolina Ti-VCT Duratec de 1.6 litros com uma potencia de 120 cavalos, enquanto que a diesel o modelo receberá o motor Duratorq DCTi também de 1.6L e com 95 cavalos de potencia. Contudo, a companhia oferecerá um kit como opcional no qual acrescenta mais 20 cavalos de potencia em seu motor a gasolina, possibilitando ao Ford Fiesta S1600 fazer de 0 a 100 km/h em 7,9 segundos.

    A esportividade do exterior do hatch foi realçado com a introdução de um kit que inclui novos para-choques, saias laterais, spoiler e difusor traseiro, além de um jogo de rodas brancas de 17 polegadas na versão a gasolina e de 16 polegadas na movida a diesel. O modelo terá a disposição as cores Frozen White (branco) ou Performance Blue (azul) personalizadas com duas faixas verticais “cortando” a sua carroceria.

    Além disso seu interior também foi incrementado com revestimento de couro nos bancos, volante e na alavanca do freio de mão, além de airbags laterais e bancos esportivos. Comercializado apenas no Reino Unido, o Ford Fiesta S1600 custará a partir de 16.665 libras, que convertido pra nossa moeda custaria 44.800 reais.

    According to the folks at Inside Line, since Hyundai has already introduced a turbocharged and hybrid version of the 2011 Sonata, a Sonata coupe may be the next logical extension to the lineup.

    Since the rear-wheel-drive Genesis coupe already occupies the sporty end of things for Hyundai, a front-wheel-drive coupe could give the South Korean brand a chance to steal some market share from the Nissan Altima Coupe and the Honda Accord Coupe.

    The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid will go on sale alongside the Sonata 2.0T later this year.

  • Inmetro obriga certificação de catalisadores nos carros


    Uma norma que deveria estar em vigor há muito tempo atrás, finalmente sai do papel e se torna algo obrigatório. Após o dia 3 de abril, todos os tipos de catalisadores de linha leve, onde se incluem os carros movidos a gasolina ou etanol, só poderão ser importados ou fabricados se tiver o selo do Inmetro.

    O meio ambiente agradece essa atitude, uma vez que existem no mercado muitos catalisadores recondicionados, que ao invés de ajudar a evitar a emissão de poluentes, atrapalham ainda mais por não funcionarem direito e os donos dos carros acharem que está tudo bem.

    Agora, com o novo controle de qualidade obrigatório, apenas aparelhos que realmente funcionam serão comercializados (ao menos na teoria). Para dificultar a ilegalidade, o selo de qualidade do Inmetro será colocado na embalagem do catalizador e na própria peça. Os fabricantes e varejistas tem até o dia 3 de abril de 2011 para regularizarem a situação e fornecer produtos de qualidade aos clientes.

    GRAVOGRAPH, the world leader for laser engraving solutions, announces the launch of its new laser solution for marking on metals and plastics: the LS100EX YAG. Made up of a platform that can house an object with a maximum volume of 610 x 305 x 145 mm, coupled with a YAG 12W source, it presents the particular advantage of being able to mark hard or reflecting materials (black or stainless steel, etc.) as well as classic materials. The LS100EX YAG is aimed at applications involving personalization of objects (business gifts, trophies, etc.) and technical marking applications for industrial parts (tools, name plates, instrumentation, metal parts, etc.).

    The laser technology featured in the LS100 EX YAG solution can be used to mark a wide range of materials (ABS, aluminium, black or stainless steel, precious metals, etc.).     The LS100EX YAG solution is controlled using the LaserStyle™ software, an intuitive interface specifically developed by specialists for laser engraving, that features automatic composition possibilities such as integration of lists of names and incrementation of numbers, and this makes it a really productive tool. With its maximum marking speed of 2.5 m/s and its front loading design (Front Loading Concept by Gravograph, the only one of its kind on the market), which cuts operating times between batches of parts, this laser engraving unit provides one of the highest machine use levels currently available.

    There are many accessories available as options with the LS100 EX YAG to provide a solution that is perfectly suited to the application and the user’s working environment. To start with, there are integrated filtering and ventilating systems for smoke and dust that enable compliance with working conditions for the user and the machine; these systems have been tried and tested in many cases of applications involving high emission levels of particles and odours. Then there is the wide range of objective lenses available, plus indexing supports for engraving on cylindrical and conical objects 3 to 130 mm in diameter. Lastly, a suction table can be fitted for marking thin, flexible materials.

  • Pilot-operated saftey valve for gases and liquids

    In August 2010, LESER (www.leser.com) will introduce a new product series: the pilot-operated safety valve. Both pop-action valves (Series 810) and modulate-action valves (Series 820) are available.

    The typical application areas of the pilot-operated safety valve (POSV) are refineries and gas processing plants, compressors in gas pipeline systems and offshore applications. The own-media-controlled POSV offers the advantage that the plant can be run close to the set pressure of the valve. This leads to an increase in the capacity utilization and consequently of the efficiency of the plant. Furthermore, POSVs allow higher external back pressures than spring-loaded valves.

    By means of the harmonized standard DIN EN ISO 4126-4 pilot-operated safety valves are now also approved in Europe. For decades already their technology has been proven in the American market and in the Middle East.

    The LESER POSV will be with a short four-week lead time ex works in Germany. As a special design feature, the tubing between the pilot valve and the main valve is integrated in the main valve cover, reducing the risk of damage or freezing. The backflow preventer is included as standard.

    The POSV will be part of the new LESER product group High Efficiency. This group unites all products which increase the efficiency and the productivity of the plant.

Employing an empirical approach that looks at changes in congressional committee chairmanship over 40-plus years, HBS professors Lauren Cohen, Joshua Coval, and Christopher Malloy transcend standard explanations about interest-rate and tax channels to help economists better interpret the corporate impact of fiscal remedies.

    Circulation of Ideas across Academic Communities: When Locals Re-import Exported Ideas

    Abstract

    The circulation of ideas across academic communities is central to academic pursuits and has attracted much past scholarly attention. As North American-based scholars with European ties, we decided to examine the impact of Organization Studies in North American academia with the objective of understanding what, if anything, makes some Organization Studies’ articles more likely to have impact in North America than others. To set the stage for better understanding the role of Organization Studies in this academic community, we first present the key characteristics of North American academia. Second, relying on archival data spanning the first 29 years of Organization Studies (1980 to 2008, inclusive), we identify an apparent dynamic of select reimportation of exported ideas. Put otherwise, top North American journals tend to reimport ideas authored (and exported) by select North American scholars in Organizations Studies. Third, we discuss the implications of this process on the field of organization studies and on the circulation of ideas across academic communities.

    The Predictive Value of Accruals and Consequences for Market Anomalies

    Abstract

    We revisit the role of the cash and accrual components of accounting earnings in predicting future cash flows using out-of-sample predictions and market value of equity as a proxy for all future cash flows. We find that, on average, accruals improve upon current cash flow from operations in predicting future cash flows. In the cross-section, accruals’ contribution is positively associated with proxies for quality of accruals and governance. Next, we investigate the implications of accruals’ predictive value for accrual-based market anomalies. We find that portfolios formed on stock return predictions using information from current CFO and accruals yield significantly positive returns on average, as opposed to CFO alone. We also find that Sloan’s (1996) accrual anomaly is related to our accrual contribution anomaly. Indeed, when accruals’ contribution to future cash flow prediction is the highest, the accrual anomaly vanishes. Collectively, our results suggest that the predictive value of accruals and market participants’ ability to process it are a significant driver of accrual-based anomalies.

    Do Powerful Politicians Cause Corporate Downsizing?

    Abstract

    This paper employs a new empirical approach for identifying the impact of government spending on the private sector. Our key innovation is to use changes in congressional committee chairmanship as a source of exogenous variation in state-level federal expenditures. In doing so, we show that fiscal spending shocks appear to significantly dampen corporate sector investment and employment activity. These corporate reactions follow both Senate and House committee chair changes, are present among large and small firms and within large and small states, are partially reversed when the congressman resigns, and are most pronounced among geographically concentrated firms. The effects are economically meaningful and the mechanism—entirely distinct from the more traditional interest rate and tax channels—suggests new considerations in assessing the impact of government spending on private sector economic activity.

    Intensities and Risk Aversion in School Choice: A Laboratory Experiment

    Abstract

    We experimentally investigate in the laboratory two prominent mechanisms that are employed in school choice programs to assign students to public schools. We study how individual behavior is influenced by preference intensities and risk aversion. Our main results show that 1) the Gale-Shapley mechanism is more robust to changes in cardinal preferences than the Boston mechanism independently of whether individuals can submit a complete or only a restricted ranking of the schools, and 2) subjects with a higher degree of risk aversion are more likely to play “safer” strategies under the Gale-Shapley but not under the Boston mechanism. Both results have important implications for the efficiency and the stability of the mechanisms.

    Network Effects in Countries’ Adoption of IFRS

    Abstract

    If a country’s accounting standards represent a political-economic equilibrium, why is that equilibrium for some countries shifting over time in favor of IFRS? We develop and test the hypothesis that network effects from the extant worldwide adoption of IFRS explain a country’s shift away from local accounting standards. That is, as more jurisdictions with economic ties to a given country adopt IFRS, perceived benefits from lowering transactions costs to foreign financial-statement users come to outweigh institutional differences (e.g., auditing technology) that make IFRS adoption costly. If true, the implication is that worldwide IFRS adoption is self-perpetuating. We find that perceived network benefits increase the degree of IFRS harmonization, although larger countries and countries less dependent on foreign trade have a differentially lower response to the IFRS network value. Also, benefits expected to accrue due to economic relations with the EU are a significant component of the perceived network value.

    Dedicated to accelerating the development of a safe, effective, accessible, preventive HIV vaccine, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) pioneered ways of addressing the inadequate incentive structures that prevented progress toward vaccines for AIDS and other diseases predominantly affecting poor populations in tropical countries. As an intermediary nonprofit organization, IAVI brought together partners with different perspectives and motivations from nonprofit, industry, government, and scientific research sectors toward developing vaccines. IAVI played several roles: honest broker, integrator, and communicator of knowledge regarding AIDS vaccine research; passionate advocate for AIDS vaccines at national and international levels; and coordinator and manager of research and development initiatives. In 2008, IAVI invested further in its own laboratories and research infrastructure, moving a step upstream in vaccine development partnerships and clinical research. How should IAVI manage tensions between what is necessary to achieve its mission and what is necessary to build new incentive structures that enable key actors to work together effectively?

    Dollarama is the leading operator of dollar stores in Canada. The firm performed extraordinarily well after a leveraged buyout in 2004 and recently executed a highly successful IPO. The company sources its goods primarily from Asia. It has strong brand recognition and competitive advantages in operations, purchasing, and merchandising. In the face of margin pressures, Dollarama recently took the risky decision to move from the single one-dollar price point to multiple price points. The additional price points offer some flexibility, but customers’ appetite for purchasing products priced above one dollar has yet to be fully determined. Dollarama is on a fast growth track but remains chiefly concerned about its vulnerability to supply disruptions and to increases in merchandise costs from higher input prices. The firm appears quite overvalued based on a multiples analysis but considerably undervalued based on a discounted cash flow analysis.
